I'm updating my previous review because Indie Campers publicly replied to all bad reviews with apologies and claimed they would contact me to address my concerns. That response gave the impression that they genuinely cared and wanted to resolve the situation.
Another month passed and I am still waiting for any update or response.
No solution. No accountability. No meaningful communication.
At this point, it feels like the company's public responses are simply damage control designed to make future customers think they care. In my experience, their actions have not matched their words.
Don't be fooled by the polished online replies. Judge a company by what they do, not what they say. Based on my experience, I would not rent from Indie Campers again and would advise others to consider alternative rental companies.
Extremely Disappointing Experience – Disputed Damage Charges, Poor Communication and Vehicle Maintenance
Our experience with this campervan rental company in Venice was extremely disappointing and unfortunately overshadowed what should have been an enjoyable holiday.
One of our biggest concerns was the way damage charges were handled. During the vehicle check-out process, damages were pointed out to us and recorded on the damage assessment documentation. However, after all the documentation had been finalised, signed and closed, the company subsequently added an additional damage claim without informing us or communicating with us beforehand. We only became aware of this additional damage after the paperwork had already been completed. We find this completely unacceptable, as customers should be informed of any further damage claims and given the opportunity to review and challenge them before additional charges are applied.
We were also charged for damage that occurred while driving through a storm. During the storm, a cable tie on the roof window blew off, and as it snapped away, the window seal also came off. We believe this happened as a result of the severe weather conditions rather than anything we did negligently. We left the water that had entered the van as evidence, along with the broken piece of plastic left in place, to demonstrate what had happened.
Despite providing dated and timed screenshots, photographs and supporting documentation to substantiate our account of events, the company continues to dispute our explanation and maintain that the damage was our fault. It is incredibly frustrating to provide clear, time-stamped evidence and supporting documentation, only to feel that it is being disregarded. We have made efforts to demonstrate the circumstances surrounding the damage, yet the matter remains unresolved. This raises serious concerns about the fairness and transparency of the company’s damage assessment process.
In addition to the damage disputes, the condition of the campervan itself was disappointing. There was an absolutely awful smell coming from the wastewater system and drains. We were told these had been cleaned and cleared before collection, but the persistent smell strongly suggested otherwise. It lasted for more than eight days, despite us attempting to resolve the issue by putting bleach down the drains. Having to endure such an unpleasant smell throughout a significant part of our holiday was unacceptable and detracted considerably from our experience.
Between the persistent drainage smell, the repeated disputed damage charges, the additional damage being added after the paperwork had been signed and closed, and the lack of communication surrounding this, the entire experience became unnecessarily stressful.
As paying customers, we expected a clean, properly maintained campervan, a fair and transparent damage assessment process, and professional communication. Instead, we have been left disputing charges for damage we do not believe we caused, despite supplying dated and timed evidence to support our position.
Unfortunately, this experience has seriously undermined our confidence in the company. The way the damage claims were handled, particularly the addition of a new claim after the documentation had been signed and closed, the continued dispute despite supporting evidence, and the refusal to accept our explanation of the storm damage, has been extremely disappointing. Combined with the poor condition of the wastewater system, this is not a company I would feel comfortable recommending based on our experience.
The trip was great, the people at the pick up site were great, but the customer service from the actual company is garbage. They refer back to “terms and conditions” to get as much as they can from you and make your life so much harder than it has to be.
I booked this trip months before and accidentally made the rerun time 2 hours later than we needed to be at the airport or we would miss our fight. Talked to the chat line and “due to terms and conditions we’re sorry you’re going to miss your fight but too bad you can’t bring it back early”. Stressed all day the last day of the trip for nothing. Brought it back 2 hours early and no problem at all with the actual people working.
Bought additions including gas, bed set, and cleaning set without the package, when I got to the pick up site they corrected it, gave me the package which would have given me a refund of 131 euro, but when I get home even though I got an email that I was to get the money back the refund was not processed. I contact the company via email and “due to terms and conditions after you have paid any amount back to you will not be refunded”.
I understand Indie Campers is buying out all local companies and therefore are able to get away with this easier but the service when you need to contact them is awful. If you need anything, too bad. Expected to get money back? Don’t even bother.
They are lucky they have decent people working at the pick up/drop off sites to make up for what the company is lacking.

Reply from Indie Campers
I rented a campervan from Indie Campers in Edinburgh from 23 July to 4 August 2026. The experience was extremely disappointing: around two hours waiting for the vehicle, inadequate cleaning, damaged pots and pans, an unusable leaking sink, and a camping table that I had paid for but was never provided.
The 6 kg LPG bottle, which I was assured was full, ran out after just three days despite normal, limited use for preparing meals. I had to purchase a replacement bottle at my own expense, and Indie Campers refused to reimburse me.
As if that were not enough, I was subsequently charged £74.47 for allegedly damaging the water tank cap. However, the staff member who handed over the campervan told me that the cap was already missing and suggested that I take a photograph. I provided my photograph, yet the company continues to rely on its own image, which has no verifiable date or time.
The most unacceptable part has been the way Customer Service has handled my complaints. Rather than properly addressing the evidence and the issues raised, the company has simply rejected my claims.
Frankly, the way this has been handled gives me the serious impression that the company is trying to make customers pay charges they do not owe. From my perspective, this feels like a potential scam. I have referred the matter to the European Consumer Centre and will pursue all legitimate channels available to protect my rights.
I will never use Indie Campers again. I strongly advise other travellers to consider alternatives, especially if they want to avoid not only problems during their trip but also this kind of treatment when seeking a fair resolution.
Rented a motorhome that was completely unusable for its main purpose. The fresh water system failed from pick-up: no water from taps or shower, toilet could not be flushed. Reported during the trip (support until ~3 a.m.) and confirmed at drop-off by their own mechanic and branch manager. No technician was sent and no replacement vehicle was offered.
Despite paying for Premium protection, there was no effective on-trip assistance. I was forced to return early and incurred extra costs. The vehicle was presented as low-mileage but showed clear signs of wear and poor maintenance.
Compensation offered was €77 on a €623 booking. Case closed by support.
A completely disastrous first experience for me, my wife, and our two young daughters. Traumatic, in fact.
AVOID Indie Campers.
Terrible customer service, we rented a van and the locking mech didn't work. Spent hours on the phone to them trying to fix it. I also ordered an automatic, not a manual which is what I was given. Only offered a 20 euro refund - appalling.
Probably the worst experience we ever had. Vacation ruined.
Booked a 14 days rental of a jeep wrangler with pop-up tent in Denver for over 3300 dollars.
At pickup, we had to wait 2 hours. Nobody was present at the location, and when they showed up, the car was not ready. We carefully inspected the car, even though it was already late. This saved our trip (if you can say so). Bed sheets were missing. We were given new ones, but they were dirty. Fridge did not work, and water pump either. Ladder to tent was not long enough. Everything was substituted... with other non working components. Had to fix fridge along the way myself, and water pump has been unusable for all the trip. Manager on location was extremely rude.
after driving 10 minutes, the car started to 'death wobble', even while driving at 40mph. We had to drive 2000 miles at this speed. Other than annoying, it was really dangerous. Tent was in terrible conditions, and it was raining inside. Solar shower was also missing, and cleaning kit too.
On the way, we met another couple with the same vehicle. They did not check thoroughly as we did at pick up. You can just imagine in what condition their vehicle was.
got around 100 bucks refund. probably spent over 800 just for extra nights in hotel, food etc because nothing worked.
I'd really recommend to avoid.
DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY. We booked a van specifically so we could easily drive and camp at smaller campsites on the NC500. A week before our booking they “upgraded” us to a huge RV. We told them we wanted our original booking and they said no. We ended up having to cancel and they’ve refused a refund.
We’ve since looked into reviews further and turns out we were one of the lucky ones given we cancelled and booked something else before our entire trip was ruined. Seems like indie campers are professional scammers and flood Google and Trustpilot with fake reviews.
We give 4* because we loved our trip, the vanlife experience & none of the problems was a major issue forbidding to travel.
We rented a 6-metre Fiat Weinsberg campervan from Indie Campers in A Coruña from 17 to 30 September, 2026. We thoroughly enjoyed the van and our trip, but several aspects of the rental fell below reasonable expectations.
INSURANCE: Despite paying €550 for the full insurance package, we discovered at pickup that the upper and lower parts of the van—among the most vulnerable areas—were excluded. After checking, we found this information was buried in the general conditions and not clearly highlighted during booking. Cancelling at that stage would have meant losing our entire rental fee.
PICKUP & EQUIPMENT: The staff were friendly, but the van was poorly cleaned, with sticky marks and dust throughout. We ended up cleaning it ourselves. The frying pan was unusable, and the replacement offered was no better. We bought a pan, glasses (missing from the kitchen pack), a knife, lighter duvets (the supplied one was too heavy and had a damaged cover), and floor mats at IKEA next door.
The gas bottle, for which we had paid roughly three times the local price, was empty and had to be replaced. Our two rented bicycles were also unavailable, requiring two additional visits the following day.
VEHICULE & ROAD SAFETY: The van had relatively low mileage and was a pleasure to drive. However, halfway through the trip, a mechanic warned us that the front tyres were close to the legal wear limit and dangerous in wet conditions. We contacted Indie Campers via WhatsApp, initially handled by AI, providing photographs and the garage's details. Approval to replace the tyres took 24 hours. Initially, they expected us to find and organise a garage ourselves, in a foreign language. Only after we insisted this was their responsibility did they arrange it. We nevertheless had advance €454 for the tires. Despite promises of reimbursement within days, it took eight days and several reminders. We also discovered that the windscreen washer reservoir was empty. Clearly, essential safety checks had been inadequate.
Also, we were surprised to find most vehicles had German license plates & a few Italian, while we were in Spain.
RETURN & SECURITY DEPOSIT: At drop-off, photographs are sent to another department for comparison with those taken at pickup. We were told deposit release could take between 6 to 30 workings days depending on the banks . Take your own detailed photographs before departure to avoid conflicts. However, photographing the roof is practically impossible, leaving customers unable to defend themselves against potential damage claims involving an area excluded from insurance. After one week, upon our request, we were informed our deposit had been released fully.
COMPULSORY FEEDBACK: More concerning, customers must submit feedback on their rental experience before the closure process can be finalised, meaning they must evaluate the company before knowing whether their deposit will be returned in full. We believe feedback should be independent of financial settlement.
OVERALL ASSESSMENT: We genuinely enjoyed the campervan and the trip. However, poor preparation, inadequate tire safety checks, unclear insurance exclusions, delayed reimbursement and a questionable deposit procedure were disappointing. Collecting the bicycles and arranging the tire replacement also cost us approximately over a half a day of our holiday.
A rental company should provide a clean, properly equipped and roadworthy vehicle, transparent insurance conditions and a straightforward return process. Unfortunately, Indie Campers fell short on several of these basic expectations.
The Worst RV Rental Experience in 20 Years – Stay Away from Indie Campers!
This was by far the worst rental experience I have had in 20 years of traveling!
I seriously question the authenticity of many of the positive reviews, especially considering that nearly everyone we met during our 20-day trip complained about the poor condition of their RVs.
However, the most unacceptable part is not even the terrible condition of the vehicles, but the way Indie Campers completely disappears when it comes time to issue refunds.
We had to pay out of pocket for repairs and replacement items, including a tire, which Indie Campers was supposed to reimburse. On top of that, they delivered the wrong RV and agreed to refund us $90 per day for the inconvenience.
Weeks have passed, and despite countless promises, we have received absolutely nothing!
There is no direct phone number to contact anyone responsible for handling these disputes, emails go unanswered, and customer service seems to disappear as soon as they owe you money.
It is absolutely outrageous that a company can collect customers' money so efficiently but become completely unreachable when it is time to honor its commitments.
In my experience, this feels like a complete scam.
After 20 years of traveling and renting vehicles, I have never encountered such unprofessional behavior, poor customer service, and total disregard for customers.
My strongest recommendation: DO NOT RENT FROM INDIE CAMPERS! Save yourself the frustration, unexpected expenses, and endless struggle to recover money that is rightfully yours.
A terrible and dangerous experience. I rented a vehicle from Indie Campers and encountered severe issues from the start. The seats were heavily stained and dirty, showing a complete lack of hygiene and pre-rental inspections.
Worse still was the safety hazard: during the trip, the dashboard warning light turned on due to a mechanical failure in the braking system. My life and my passengers' lives were put at risk, and I had to waste valuable holiday time taking the vehicle to a mechanic at my own expense for urgent repairs.
Their customer support was disgraceful. For 3 days spent driving a dangerous vehicle with faulty brakes, their "automated system" calculated a ridiculous compensation of just €11.92 in total (around €3.97 per day!). To make matters worse, support representatives promised me in writing that a manager would manually review the case for further compensation once the mechanic's invoice was processed. Instead, they broke their promise, refused any senior review, and closed the case. Do not rent from them if you care about your safety and your money.

Reply from Indie Campers
An absolute rip-off.
After our experience, my advice is simple: if you are planning to rent a campervan, go somewhere else.
What should have been a family holiday turned into a series of problems, unexpected expenses and complaints. And the worst part was not that things went wrong, but how Indie Campers handled them.
1. You pay for things that are not what you expect.
You rent a campervan, but gas is an extra charge.
We paid for a bedding pack for four people and received enough for only two.
We paid for a pet-friendly cleaning pack, yet were still expected to return the vehicle as clean as we had received it.
Picking up and returning the campervan involved waiting times of over two hours.
We were asked to sign the vehicle condition acceptance form before the van had even been prepared, instead of being allowed to inspect it first.
2. They left us without a campervan for an entire day.
Our pick-up was confirmed for 20 August. Two days beforehand, Indie Campers informed us that, due to internal logistical problems, we would not be able to collect the vehicle until 21 August.
We lost an entire day of our holiday because of a problem that was entirely their responsibility. We even had screenshots showing other campervans available at nearby locations, yet they offered no alternative to prevent us from losing that day.
We had to find accommodation and transport ourselves, reorganise our plans and pay additional expenses out of our own pocket.
3. Their proposed solution was unacceptable.
We claimed €249.20 in expenses resulting from the delay:
Accommodation: €129.60.
Uber: €42.70.
Food: €76.90.
Indie Campers' response was to make us choose between having our accommodation and transport costs covered or receiving a refund for the rental day we had lost.
Seriously? Why should a customer have to choose between recovering expenses caused by the company's failure and getting their money back for a service they never received?
And this does not even address the loss of an entire day of our holiday, for which they offered no additional compensation.
I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST RENTING FROM INDIE CAMPERS.
This is not about expecting a company to be perfect. It is about delivering what was booked, being transparent about costs and taking responsibility when things go wrong.
Our experience was the complete opposite: problems from the handover onwards, wasted time, additional expenses and a constant struggle to obtain a reasonable resolution.
If you are planning a holiday and value your money, your time and your peace of mind, look elsewhere.
Indie Campers: an experience I would never repeat and a company I cannot recommend.
Word “Unlimited”does not mean unlimited - they are misusing the word unlimited. It is actually limited to 420 km a day..
Be careful before booking, I got charged $600 on the top of all premium selections and bookings and unlimited promises.
Impossible to argue with them or prove them wrong at this because they are saying that it said somewhere within the booking process on the third screen as you already checking out conditions for Word “Unlimited”
Good luck!

ur experience with Indie was extremely disappointing and put a serious damper on our holiday.
When we returned the campervan, the employee told us that everything was fine. To our surprise, approximately two hours later, we received an invoice for €250, which was then deducted from our bank account without our authorisation.
If there had been any issues with the campervan at the time of return, they should have informed us immediately. We still had almost an hour before the official return deadline, so we would have had time to resolve any issues ourselves. Instead, we were presented with a charge afterwards, without being given any opportunity to inspect or rectify the alleged problem. We strongly dispute this charge and the way it was handled.
On top of this, Indie allowed us to drive for four days with a campervan that had a broken window. No replacement vehicle was offered. This put us in an unsafe situation and significantly reduced our enjoyment of the holiday. With a damaged window, you can no longer park wherever you want without worrying about the security of your belongings.
We had specifically chosen the most comprehensive insurance package and the cleaning package, expecting a worry-free holiday and proper service. Even the additional bedding package we paid for did not fit the beds in the campervan.
Despite everything, we tried to be reasonable and offered to settle the matter amicably, with neither party making any further payments. Unfortunately, this did not lead to the fair resolution we had hoped for.
Our conclusion: Indie has seriously damaged our trust through its poor communication, its handling of the damaged vehicle and the unexpected €250 deduction. We find it unacceptable that an employee confirms everything is fine when the vehicle is returned, only for a substantial charge to appear two hours later.
Based on this experience, we would not rent from Indie again. We strongly recommend that anyone considering renting from them documents the condition of the vehicle thoroughly and obtains written confirmation of everything when collecting and returning it.

Basit was great solving the problem i had with my trip dates. Thank you so much!
BEWARE: GREAT IF NOTHING GOES WRONG. A NIGHTMARE IF SOMETHING DOES.
Before renting from Indie Campers, understand one thing: If you have trouble on the road, you’re essentially on your own.
We paid nearly $800 extra for their upgraded Standard protection, only to discover that meaningful roadside assistance was practically nonexistent.
Customer service is an infuriating maze of AI responses. If you finally reach a supposed human being, expect a reply a day later, usually beginning with “We are so sorry for the delay.” By then, you’ve already lost a day of your vacation—and your problem is nowhere near being resolved.
We suffered repeated water pump failures, drove hundreds of miles seeking repairs, and spent two weeks without running water. Indie Campers never provided roadside assistance (and kept the money).
If your camper works perfectly, you may love the experience. But if anything goes wrong, your dream vacation can quickly turn into hell.
Research other companies. Consider yourself warned.
Very Disappointing Experience with Indie Campers – Solis Camper Van
The Solis camper van we rented was dirty, poorly maintained, and had multiple issues that significantly affected our trip.
From the beginning, the van was not properly cleaned. The refrigerator, in particular, was dirty, which was especially concerning since we were using it to store food.
We also experienced a dead battery causing the refrigerator to stop working and resulting in us losing the contents of the refrigerator twice.
The van displayed an error message indicating a problem with the propane system, leaving us without propane, heat, or hot water. This was especially unacceptable given that we were traveling in cold weather and relying on these basic functions.
There was also a leak above and below the sink, which resulted in our supplies getting wet and ruined. There was mold under the sink.
Perhaps most concerning from a safety standpoint, a screw was missing from the panel cover between the seats. This caused the panel to be loose and resulted in one of us twisting an ankle. This should have been caught during a proper inspection and maintenance check before the van was rented.
Other items were also missing, including the fresh-water adapter and the shade for the sliding door, which meant we had no privacy when using the van.
What made the experience even more frustrating was Indie Campers’ lack of customer service. We sent two emails requesting compensation for the numerous maintenance, cleanliness, and safety issues we experienced and received no response.
We understand that problems can occasionally happen with rental vehicles. What is unacceptable is renting out a vehicle with this many issues, some of which were safety-related, and then failing to respond when customers bring those problems to your attention.
Based on our experience, we would not recommend renting from Indie Campers until they demonstrate that their vehicles are being properly cleaned, inspected, and maintained—and that they are willing to stand behind their customers when things go wrong.

Worst rental experience so far! We paid 2500£ for a Van with loads of damages, dirty, holes in the roof tent... no replacement because there wasn't any other. So we were forced to take it or cancel our whole holidays with no refund.
Next step: first couple of nights the alarm went off every time we moved inside the van or went for a walk. Customer service: Somebody with a script, then referring us to a WhatsApp channel referring us around in circles. Best advice we could get was "try to close all doors" - well thanks mate.
We talked to campsite owners and according to them indie's vehicles and customer service are the worst of all. They advised renting at smaller businesses as they actually care and help when something goes wrong.
Booking: 04607K. We booked a Jeep-class vehicle with Indie Campers for a road trip in the USA for our Honeymoon.
On the morning of collection, Indie Campers contacted us to advise that the booked vehicle was unavailable. We were offered a large campervan instead, which was unsuitable for the itinerary for which the Jeep had been specifically booked.
Throughout the day, multiple customer service representatives promised updates and call-backs. None of these promised call-backs were received.
As we were receiving no concrete information, we travelled to the Las Vegas depot at our own expense. Upon arrival, the depot manager confirmed that the booked Jeep could not be supplied because it had been grounded due to an overheating engine.
The depot manager then proposed an alternative solution. We would take a temporary vehicle from Las Vegas and exchange it for a Jeep at the Los Angeles depot the following morning, where suitable vehicles were reportedly available. We agreed to this proposal.
However, despite waiting at the depot for approximately two hours, Indie Campers' internal teams were unable to obtain the authorisation required to implement the arrangement. No replacement vehicle was ultimately supplied and no rental could proceed.
The key facts of this case are not in dispute:
• The vehicle we booked was unavailable.
• The alternative arrangement proposed by the depot manager was never implemented.
• I never signed a rental agreement.
• I never accepted vehicle keys.
• I never took possession of any vehicle.
• No vehicle handover ever took place.
• No pick-up was completed.
• We left the depot without a vehicle after waiting for a resolution that never materialised.
The following day, after further unsuccessful discussions with customer services prompted by us, we discovered that the vehicle category displayed in the customer portal had been changed to a large campervan despite us never agreeing to such a change and receiving no notification that it had occurred.
With no vehicle provided, no confirmed replacement, and no written confirmation of the proposed depot-to-depot swap, we had no option but to make alternative travel arrangements for our trip.
The situation became even more concerning when the reservation was subsequently marked as "Cancelled" and an automated cancellation email was issued, despite the fact that Indie Campers had been unable to supply the booked vehicle and had never handed over any vehicle at all.
I have retained contemporaneous call logs, emails, screenshots of the booking portal, evidence showing no collection was completed, and the cancellation correspondence.
At the time of writing, Indie Campers is still reviewing the matter. However, the outcome should be straightforward. Indie Campers did not provide the vehicle that was booked, did not provide the agreed alternative solution, and did not provide any vehicle whatsoever. I therefore expect a full refund of all monies paid, together with reimbursement of the reasonable expenses incurred travelling to and from the depot while attempting to collect a vehicle that was never made available.
Until this matter is resolved appropriately, I cannot recommend Indie Campers based on my experience.
We recently hired a campervan from Indie Campers (Milan) for a 13-day trip around Italy at a cost of approximately £1,578.
Unfortunately, we experienced issues with both the leisure battery and the water pump. These are not minor features of a campervan; they are essential systems that affect access to electricity, running water, the sink and shower facilities.
As a result of these faults, we were unable to travel and stay as independently as planned and had to alter our itinerary. We were forced to stay at campsites with electric hook-ups, incurring additional costs , simply to keep the vehicle functioning.
The most disappointing aspect was the handling of the complaint. Although Indie Campers acknowledged the faults and offered compensation of €139.48, they refused to reimburse the campsite costs that were incurred as a direct result of the vehicle defects. Despite requesting a breakdown of how the compensation was calculated, no meaningful explanation was provided beyond reference to an internal compensation framework.
For a rental costing £1,578, compensation of €139.48 for issues that affected essential campervan facilities throughout the trip feels wholly inadequate.
The condition of the vehicle and the subsequent customer service fell well below expectations. Based on this experience, I would be reluctant to book with Indie Campers again.
*** So just an update in case anyone is thinking of submitting a complaint, despite the above review and providing Indie campers with pages of evidence to support the issues we had this is the response we had following our Trust Pilot Review, they are obviously not concerned with the consistently low Trust Pilot scores ....
