À fuir - avoid the company

Avoid this company. Let me tell you what happened.

We arrived on the island with my boyfriend, picked up the car, and drove to our Airbnb in Funchal, just a few kilometres away. While my boyfriend was manoeuvring to park, we noticed a slight smell of burning rubber. Our host, who had been waiting for us, told us that the tyres looked brand new. Without thinking too much about it, we let it go, because why would someone give us a defective car?

The next day, we didn’t use the car because we explored Funchal on foot. Over the following two days, we drove a maximum of 150 km.

On the morning of the third day, while driving on the expressway, my boyfriend suddenly couldn’t change gears anymore. Nothing was responding. We had to pull over onto the side of the road. We were towed away, and the agency provided us with a replacement vehicle.

Two days later, we were absolutely shocked to find out that we were expected to pay €1,100 for a completely burnt-out clutch, supposedly because it was our fault.

All we received was an invoice and a photo of the supposedly burnt clutch. Let me remind you: we had barely driven 150 km with this car.

I have been with my boyfriend for years, and his driving is impeccable. He is an experienced and careful driver.

We tried to defend ourselves. We asked for written evidence from the mechanic confirming that we had actually caused the clutch to burn out, but nothing was provided. Apparently, obtaining such documentation would have cost us extra.

One of the agency employees even told us that she had once seen a customer burn out a clutch after driving just 1 km. WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!

Everyone is friendly when there are no problems. It’s when something goes wrong that you see the true side of certain companies.

I cancelled my reservation and was…

I cancelled my reservation and was promised a refund within 7 business days. It has now been 35 days and I have still not received my money back. Every time I contact them, I get the same response — that the refund is "on its way" and depends on the bank. This is unacceptable. I will be escalating this to my bank and consumer protection authorities.

Violates the law

This company is doing act against the law.
Even though the other party made the damage on the car. Everything is filled in and the proper procedures are followed. They are still we should pay as consumers because we are somehow responsible. It smells like they want to double charge us and the insurance company of the other party. They are operating illegal, violating civil code 1044 under Portuguese law. This company has ruined me and my fiance engagement (we got engaged right before this all happend). This bring a lot of stress.

Wordt company I ever dealt with. Just a bunch of crooks.
