I've worked with hundreds of
#freelance writers on thousands of stories for the past 8+ years at Business Insider. 📫
Although we love hearing from new voices, we also have lots of writers we work with over and over. These are the kinds of writers who make my eyes light up when I see their name in my inbox. Sometimes, I'll reach out to them with story ideas or encourage them to send me pitches because I miss working with them!
Over time, I've noticed there are a few things that many of my go-to freelancers have in common...
⭐ A lot of their pitches feel easy to say yes to
- Their proposed headlines feel close to something we'd publish
- Takeaways and key points feel clear
- They include the essential details in the pitch, so I rarely need to ask for more info before assigning
⭐ Their follow-up emails feel strategic
- When they follow up, they sometimes offer alternate headlines or angles
- They wait about a week to follow up unless something is timely
- If they don't hear back after one or two follow-ups, they pitch something else
⭐ Their submissions feel ready to go
- Their submissions include all of the necessary documentation, transcripts, sourcing, and photos
- Required forms and contracts are signed before their draft lands in my inbox
⭐ They communicate clearly
- If there are delays, concerns, or possible problems, I trust them to reach out and be transparent
I hope this
