#ParksWeLove: Croton Point Park CROTON-ON-HUDSON, Westchester County – Near the river's edge, oyster shells blanket the ground, with the oldest layers dating back 7,000 years or more. Known as a shell midden, the mound on this peninsula, built from the remains of countless meals, is considered by archaeologists to be the largest on the North Atlantic coast. It points to a long presence of Indigenous peoples, like the Kitchawank, members of the Wappinger Confederacy. Walk the shoreline, soak in the views of Haverstraw Bay, and discover more about this point's story: https://lnkd.in/e7EDcVic Images: Jeff Mertz . Happy birthday to Eleanor Roosevelt, born on this day in 1884! Renowned for her work in human rights, she was equally passionate about the environment. Much of that connection to the land took root here in the Hudson Valley, at Val-Kill, her home in Hyde Park. We’re proud to celebrate three members of the Scenic Hudson land conservation team who presented at the Land Trust Alliance's national Rally in Denver this past September! The national conference brings together land trust staff, board members, and conservation partners to share ideas and learn from one another. Mike, Annie, and Emily brought lessons from the Hudson Valley to colleagues from across the country! . Michael Knutson, Assistant Director of Land Conservation, presented with Sarah Turner of Natural Lands and attorney Phil Oswald of Rupp Pfalzgraf on a six-year effort to resolve a major easement violation, including the restoration work that lies ahead. . Annie Christian, Senior Project Manager and Agricultural Specialist, teamed up with Dirt Capital Partners to explore how private capital can help protect working farmland, drawing on two joint projects in Fishkill and New Lebanon. . Emily Hague, Director of Land Conservation and Easement Stewardship, joined colleagues from the Open Space Institute and Natural Lands to walk through when and how to amend an easement, with case studies on corrections and resolving violations. . Kudos to all the presenters who contributed to these critical conversations! https://lnkd.in/gyJ4cyp7

THANK YOU to 100+ volunteers who attended AquaBlitz events in Kingston and Poughkeepsie this past September! Participants waded into waterways to help identify, net, and sort the creatures living there. The collected data will help gauge the health of local ecosystems. . AquaBlitz is an extension of Scenic Hudson’s Defining Urban Biodiversity project. A partnership with the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. https://thehv.life/3ZY18d8 . Images: Tyler Blodgett

#ParksWeLove: RiverWalk Park at Tarrytown TARRYTOWN, Westchester County — Fifteen years ago today, this stretch of waterfront opened to the public! Where an 80-year-old asphalt plant once stood, a riverside walkway and an "eco-corridor" filled with native plants now invite you to soak in sweeping views of the river, bridge, and Manhattan skyline. https://thehv.life/4hHg3zD . Scenic Hudson partnered with the village, county, and developer Natural RE/sources to create this park. It is now managed by the Village of Tarrytown. . Image: Jeff Mertz

One message resonates across political and generational divides: protecting what we love. Scenic Hudson's latest #HVViewfinder article brings together two environmental luminaries — Maya Lilly, senior producer of The YEARS Project, and Melissa Everett, executive director of Sustainable Hudson Valley — to talk about the role of storytelling in climate action. As Maya Lilly puts it, "the climate movement has nonstop conflict and really good villains, which is also helpful for a good story." Read on for a fresh perspective on #ClimateChange, what the fossil fuel industry got right (gasp!), and why J.R.R. Tolkien comes up in a conversation about climate: https://thehv.life/4hai7Bb

The recent statewide ban on large data centers sets the tone for New York’s priorities and supports Scenic Hudson’s work to continue protecting agricultural land, drinking water, and open spaces. Ned Sullivan, President of Scenic Hudson, recently sat down with NY1’s Cheryl Wills to discuss the executive order's influence — and how the moratorium affects Hudson Valley farmers and residents. In 1969, more than 40% of U.S. children walked or biked to school — a stark contrast to today’s 11%. The drop is tied to how our communities and streets have been designed around the car. This #WorldCarFreeDay, we're highlights the trains, buses, ferries, and shuttles already helping Hudson Valley residents drive less, along with the local groups working for more options. Plug-in solar is a climate solution that makes clean energy easier to install at home, and New York could soon legalize it. #ClimateWeek Often called "balcony solar," these small, portable panels plug into a standard outlet and generate enough power to help run household appliances and devices. Germany already has more than 1 million in use, and New Jersey just signed a law legalizing them. New York's SUNNY Act passed the state legislature in May and now awaits the governor's signature.
