Filter by attribute filter stopped working

    Hi there,

    My client’s “Filter by Attribute” filter in the shop sidebar has suddenly stopped working.

    I’ve already been in contact with the theme developer, who investigated the issue and attempted several fixes. After reviewing everything, they have advised that the problem does not appear to be theme-related and recommended that I contact WooCommerce support for further assistance.

    When a user selects an option within the filter, the page simply reloads and continues to display all products, rather than filtering the results based on the selected attribute. No filtering appears to be taking place.

    Could you please help investigate the cause of this issue and advise on how it can be resolved?

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the report. Since a filter that suddenly stopped working can have a few different causes, the fastest way to narrow it down is to confirm a couple of things first:

    1. Which filter are you using? The core “Filter Products by Attribute” widget/block, or the “Product Filter – Attributes” block from the WooCommerce Product Search extension? They’re separate features with different fixes.
    2. What changed around the time it broke? A WooCommerce update, theme change, or new/updated plugin is the most common trigger.

    A couple of quick checks that resolve this in many cases:

    Confirm you’re filtering a global attribute. The built-in filter only works with global attributes created under Products > Attributes, not custom attributes added on an individual product’s edit screen. See https://woocommerce.com/document/managing-product-taxonomies/ for the difference.

    Make sure the filter sits alongside a products block on the same page. The filter only narrows an accompanying product grid. If a recent update moved your shop to the newer Product Collection block, the legacy standalone filter may no longer be wired to anything. WooCommerce’s current approach is the unified Product Filters block, which is designed to work with Product Collection: https://woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-store-editing/customizing-shop-page-catalog/filter-products/

    If both of those look correct, the next step is a standard conflict test: switch to a default theme and deactivate non-WooCommerce plugins, then re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit. Caching and JS-optimization plugins are frequent offenders here.

    If you can share your WooCommerce version and whether you’re on the classic widget or a block, I can point you to the exact fix.

    Hi Zach,

    Thanks so much for your reply. I am using the “Filter Products by Attribute” widget. I can’t confirm what caused the issue as I update both the Theme and WooCommerce at the same time.

    I can confirm that all my products have a global product filter and individual attribute filter attached to them. I have over 2000 products so I only tested removing the individual filter off 3 products and the Shop filter still didn’t work. Do I need to remove all individual filters on all products?

    I am using the XStore (my theme) Product Archives widget to showcase all my products. This is what I was using from the begininning and the filters were working, so I’m not sure if it’s that.

    I have yet to try your 3rd recommendation around changing to a default theme – I will try this soon. In terms of the caching, I have WPRocket which I have deactivated to see if it was causing the issue and it didn’t seem to help.

    You can stop removing the attributes from products, that’s not where this is.

    I visited your shop as a visitor. Every shop page shows the same 10 products, whether I open page 2, a category, or a product search. Each page also ends in a WordPress critical error right after the product grid, so the sidebar and footer never load. The error sits at the load more part of the Archive Products widget.

    The product grid is ignoring every URL parameter, the filter included, and the crash is what removes the filter widget from the page. On a default theme with WooCommerce 11.1, the same filter works, so the archive page is where this needs fixing.

    Can you please check three things:

    1. Open your shop in a private window and scroll to the bottom. You should see the critical error message there.
    2. Go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs, open the newest fatal-errors log, and paste the latest entry here. That line names the file the error comes from.
    3. In your Elementor product archive template, switch the Archive Products widget navigation from Load More or Infinite Scroll to Pagination, save, and try the filter again.

    The log line settles whether this is the archive template or a plugin, and it’s what to hand to 8theme if it points there.

    Thanks for the screenshot!

    Please don’t change any more product data for this one. As Shameem mentioned, the attributes aren’t where the problem is. The Brands you deleted under Products > Brands are also a separate feature from your Brand attribute, and the “Filter Products by Attribute” widget only looks at the attribute, so removing them couldn’t have affected the filter. If you were using brand pages, brand logos or brand links anywhere on the site, those will be gone now, so it’s worth restoring them from your JetBackup backup if you still need them.

    The cause is the one Shameem found. That filter works by adding your chosen option to the page’s web address, and WooCommerce then applies it to the shop’s main product listing. Your shop shows products through the XStore Product Archives widget, which runs its own product search and ignores that part of the address. So the page reloads with every product still showing. It’s also why the same filter works fine on a default theme.

    That means the fix has to happen in the product grid itself. Two things to try:

    1. In your Elementor shop template, check whether the Product Archives widget has an option to use the current query or the default shop query, and turn it on if it does.
    2. If there’s no such option, take it back to 8theme with these specifics: the filter works on a default theme with WooCommerce 11.1, and their Product Archives widget doesn’t apply the filter’s URL parameters.

    That gives them something concrete to fix 🙂
