This is a newsletter that documents, defends, and lionizes the natural world. Welcome!
My name is Janisse Ray. I’m a nature writer.
I’m here because I believe that stories matter, that they change lives.
My own life has been changed, over and over again, because of a story I read or heard or saw. I’ve seen other people’s lives changed. I mean changed permanently. The story ends and boom, you’re a different person. You think differently. You act differently.
Stories are transformative. That makes them very powerful.
I also think stories are medicine. They’re secret passages to the heart. They’re mycelia. Maps. Leaves that build the soil of our culture, as Wendell Berry said.
That’s why I write.
To connect with you. To encourage you. To inspire you.
To make a difference in how we humans live on the Earth.
To guide a deeper connection to this place that is our home, because when we destroy it, we destroy ourselves. We need the Earth, the Earth needs us.
To save wild things.
To make the world a more habitable place for all of us, in ways large and small. To create better quality of life.
We’re all needed—right now—to love and care for the Earth. And for each other.
