Welcome to Thrutopia

- a future we would be proud to bequeath to the coming generations.

We are a group of writers who are engaged with Thrutopian narratives.

The term Thrutopia was initially coined in a blog by Rupert Read in 2017 in The Huffington Post:

‘What are desperately needed, but as yet barely exist, are what I term thrutopias. Thrutopias would be about how to get from here to there, where 'there' is far, far away in time. How to live and love and vision and carve out a future, through pressed times that will endure ... We need ways of seeing, understanding, inhabiting, creating what will be needed for the very long haul. Visioning the politics and ecology of getting through.’

Most of us have, in one way or another, been involved with the classes and workshops led by author Manda Scott on the subject: The Thrutopia Masterclass.

We believe wholeheartedly that telling stories can make a difference and that telling different stories can transform both the writer and the reader.

We are in troubling times, not least in facing the climate crises, and we want our words to form a path towards a world where humans live more in harmony with each other and with the earth.

This is not utopia, as we will tackle head-on the very real challenges we all face. This is Thrutopia, as we intend to find a way through.

As co-founder of Bioneers, Nina Simons said in January 2024 on the Accidental Gods podcast:

“This is no time for small talk. This is a time for myth-making. This is a time for epic poetry. This is a time to tell the tales that will become our compass for the days ahead.”
