About the Journal:

This journal was born out of a deep need: to create something honest, grounded, and enduring in a noisy world. I wanted to share the kind of writing I’d want to read—pieces that stir the soul, connect us to the land, and speak to the part of us that still believes in the magic of the natural world.

Welcome to The Wilderness Journal.

Why subscribe?

Because the world moves fast—but the woods don’t. The human disconnection from nature is creating a crisis that demands attention. This newsletter brings you stories, reflections, and outdoor wisdom that offer solutions to the problem, to help the world slow down, reconnect, and remember what really matters.

This is a semi-weekly letter to the reader. Soulful writing from the backwoods—essays, ponderings, and reflections on solitude, the natural world and what we can learn about life from the great outdoors. Posts that not only speak about the confluence of environmentalism & spirituality, but supply you with ideas on how to find solace in your own backyard.

Most of what I write is free and for everyone because this is urgent and the solutions need sharing. But there is also a paid subsection. If you choose to become a paid subscriber, you’re not only helping me carve out more time to write deeply and consistently—you’re also supporting the larger work I am doing to build community, help others regain the connection to the land, and protect the wild places that inspire us.

And if you do subscribe, you’ll receive something a little different. Something rooted, intentional, and worth your time.

PAID subscribers: ($5 monthly or $50 yearly) Get full access to all posts, occasional Q & A sessions where I want to hear from you and learn what you’d like to see. Plus a handwritten letter mailed directly to you.

Free subscribers have access to all notes and occasional posts.

About Me

Hey there—I’m Anthony. I’m a writer, outdoorsman, and former Fish and Wildlife Biologist. Someone who finds peace where the road ends and the trees begin. I started The (Wild)erness Journal as a place to gather the stories, reflections, and hard-won lessons that come from time spent in the wild.

For me, the woods & waters have always been more than a place—they’ve been a teacher, a sanctuary, and a reminder to slow down and listen. I am a newspaper journalist with a monthly column on all things nature and outdoors. And somehow I found the time to write and publish a middle-grade novel called, “The Spirit of the North Wind,” a book that weaves the wisdom of nature into a story about ancient Ojibwe folklore.

We are at a crossroads in time and I write because the land can’t speak to those who don’t enter it. I aim to be a voice of the land, for the land. To help readers regain a lost connection to the outdoors.
