Welcome.

I’m Steve Sack, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, here to share some of my favorite Classic Sacktoons, along with the quirky art projects I’ve cranked out over the years.

On The Art of Sack, each of my twice-weekly posts will feature two things:

  1. A blast-from-the-past political cartoon from my five-decade career as a newspaper editorial cartoonist.

  2. A sampling of the many wacky art projects I dabbled in along the way.

I poured everything into my editorial work. But after spending my days immersed in wars and politics, I needed a break — so the stuff I made just for fun tended to be non-political and light-hearted. I loved experimenting with every medium I could get my hands on, from oil painting and comic strips to seed art, paper-mâché, whirligigs, 3D modeling, and abstracts — all the way to tiny characters carved on toothpicks with an X-Acto.

Here you’ll get a sense of my process, and I’ll share anecdotes from my artistic journey… the wins, the flops, and (if you’re nice) some NSFW naughtiness.

You’re not crazy to feel that the world’s gone mad these days — but I’ve found that when the headlines start feeling like an assault, taking a break for some silliness can make all the difference.

I’m not big on paywalls. I’d like as much of this material as possible to be for everyone. For paid subscribers, I have some special goodies in mind — but for the most part, this party is open.

Subscribe now and let’s check out some seriously unserious art.
