What is Splinister?

Welcome to the substack newsletter for me - Maura McHugh - a writer living in Galway, Ireland. Hello! I write science fiction, horror and fantasy fiction in many media, as well as non-fiction and cultural commentary.

What to expect?

I write weekly on topics of interest to me: cinema, mythology, art, technology, literature, astronomy, history and philosophy, along with updates on my own projects, so on occasion you’ll hear the banging and swearing behind the gauzy curtain of creativity.

I’m currently writing a fiction series called Moon Hook, which is delivered every Thursday. If you like a weird story set on an mysterious island off the coast of Ireland, then this might be your cupán tae.

Recent posts that have been popular:

  • Libraries - my love of libraries

  • Let Go - discussing the stories we tell ourselves.

  • The Cult of Attention - where I ponder my fascination with cults and how social media is training us.

  • Solstice Review - what I learned in my first five months on Substack and how it helped my writing.

  • Are you Reality Deficient? - perhaps the next question doctors will ask of people who are online, all the time.

How much?

Everything is free at the moment, but you are welcome to upgrade to a monthly or yearly subscription if you want to support my work, as some already do. I plan to introduce fiction, as well as more audio and video as the newsletter evolves.

Subscribers will be able to comment on the pieces, and I have open threads on the Substack chat.
