Journalism for a world in crisis
With subscribers in 188 countries, the Planet: Critical podcast and newsletter investigate how our energy, economic and political crises are colliding, to reveal what’s really going on—and what needs to be done.
“Planet: Critical has a laser-like focus on whether human civilisation has a sustainable future.”
- Steve Keen, Economist and Creator of Building a New Economics
What you’ll get if you subscribe on Substack
After signing up as a paid subscriber, you’ll have access to the Planet: Critical newsletter on Substack online and on the app, and commenting features. Past editions cover imagination, fascism, BRICS, violence, energy crises, greenwashing and witch hunts. Occasionally, you’ll also receive world exclusive pieces of investigative journalism, such as my report on the $500 billion of fossil fuels off of Gaza’s coast driving the genocide, Russia and the US’ involvement in the climate wars fuelling the genocide in Sudan, or my exposé on how the fashion industry drafted “sustainability legislation” which was harmful to both people and planet.
For the full Planet: Critical experience, please subscribe at PlanetCritical.com where you will get the newsletter delivered to your inbox every week, alongside the weekly podcast for a world in crisis. Each episode is a long-form interview, and former guests range from scientists, politicians and academics to journalists, artists and freedom fighters.
Why have two websites?
I switched Planet: Critical to Ghost after being a Substack bestseller because I much prefer the idea of my work supporting a non-profit than a corporation backed by venture capital. However, inbox fatigue is a real problem, and for many the Substack app is a brilliant way to collate all their favourite media. So I’m putting the newsletter up behind a paywall for those who prefer to read my work in the app.
I thought Planet: Critical was free for everyone?
It is—over on PlanetCritical.com. Planet: Critical is 100% community-powered by a small band of members who ensure my works stays open-access for everyone. Their generosity means that my commitment to this work is full-time and that their fellow subscribers—no matter where they come from or how much money they have to spare—have equal access to the information published here. That, to me, is commons journalism.
About Rachel
“Rachel has an unrivalled capacity for delivering facts and connecting the dots whilst being eloquent, engaging, compassionate, and witty.” - Professor Henrik Nordborg, OST
I investigate why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it.
I have taught at universities, produced guerrilla radio programs, and written world exclusives for major papers. I now publish everything independently on Planet: Critical and its sister project, Planet: Coordinate, a documentary series investigating what to do for a world in crisis right on the frontlines with communities who are feeling it first. I consider my job to connect the dots of the big picture, and am regularly invited to speak at conferences and lecture at universities.
I am currently writing my first book HER BODY, OUR CHOICE which will be published by Virago in early 2027.
Work with me
