Tournament Process
We will be playing the standard Hong Kong variation, 3-Fan minimum. Qualified players will be randomly seated into tournament tables. Players must spend no longer than 10 seconds to make a move. Each game will count toward the tournament standings. Standings will be updated live throughout the tournament and will be viewable online at https://www.mosaicmahjong.com.
The host will record results after each game, whether it is a win or a draw. Players MUST flag down the host after each game by raising the table tag, during which if recording a win, the name of the winner is given, the name of the discarder is given if applicable, and the Fan value of the hand is recorded. Players are responsible for counting their own Fan, then verified by the table.
Players will play at a table for an entire round, meaning every player will have a chance at dealer. Dealer may only compound twice, meaning they are allowed to win twice in a row, after which the dealer will rotate. If the game ends in a draw, dealer rotates.
Round winds are in effect and will start with East, followed by South, West, and North on each player rotation. For this tournament, we will aim to do all four rounds.
Each round has a 1-hour limit. If the round is still in progress at the 1-hour mark, the round completes after the current game completes. After all players finish their rounds, everyone will be randomly assigned to their next table. Players may not choose who they play against.
FINALS: Main play will end after 4 rounds. At this time, the bottom four players will play together at the Table of Redemption, and the top four players will play together at the Table of Champions. The top four players will be seated 4 -> 3 -> 2 -> 1 and are guaranteed the top four places at the end of the tournament (performance during this round will not affect their overall placement), but the winner of the Table of Champions will win the entire tournament. The winner of the Table of Redemption will receive special recognition. Everyone else may continue to participate in open play during this time.
Points
Tournament points are for ranking only. They are not gambling, betting, or cash-game stakes. Top placed contestants will be recognized with an invite to the after party at 7:30 PM at my place.
Fan value will be converted to points according to the following scale:
3 Fan -> 8 points
4 Fan -> 16 points
5 Fan -> 24 points
6 Fan -> 32 points
7 Fan -> 48 points
8 Fan -> 64 points
9 Fan -> 96 points
10+ Fan -> 128 points
Games are zero-sum, meaning the winner gains points, the losers lose points, and the overall sum of points is zero. When winning by self-draw, all players pay the winner 1X the number of points based on the number of Fan in your hand. When winning by discard, only the discarding player pays, but they pay 2X the points.
Penalties
If you call a false win, i.e. your hand is not a winning hand, or it does not meet the 3-Fan minimum, the game ends, and you pay 6 Fan -> 32 points to all players. The host must be notified when this happens.
You may not call "Chow / Seung", "Pong", or "Mahjong" late, meaning if the next player has looked at the next tile, it is too late. You won't be penalized, but you can no longer claim the tile. I won't (cannot) personally enforce it, but I allow the table to enforce this however the players please.
You will not be penalized if you draw the wrong tile or accidentally knock over other tiles in the wall, but you may be strongly chided by the players at your table.
Etiquette
After rolling the dice, you must collect the dice and put it to your right.
When building the walls, you are to arrange the walls in a pinwheel.
When dealing the tiles, you must make sure the walls are accessible to players, i.e. move them closer to players as necessary.
During the round, you must make sure your wall remains accessible to players, i.e. move them closer to players as necessary.
If you are dealer, you must announce flowers as soon as possible, draw for your flowers, and invite the next player to draw for their flowers.
You must spend no longer than 10 seconds to make a move.
Players are responsible for counting their own Fan, after which the table verifies.
Conduct
Players are expected to know the rules, play at a reasonable pace, respect host rulings, and treat the table well. The host may remove a player from tournament play for slow play, repeated rule confusion, poor conduct, or anything that disrupts the event.
