Overall good experience

Overall, my experience has been good with Upwork. It provides good tools to the freelancer. The only reason I gave it four stars vs. five is the percentage of revenue charged. The change to the variable rate based upon demand drove my cost to 15% on many contracts. That is excessive in my opinion.

Overall fees and money collecting

The service tax, the conversion and connects. Lot of people posting fake job and waste your money and connects hoping it will hire you but no.

On my end, it serves it purpose but I won't recommend staying with upwork

Great company. They are up front about things and real people. No sugarcoating but also great attitudes and communication. I appreciate them greatly!!!

You have to buy $20 worth of connects…

You have to buy $20 worth of connects to (briefly be at the top) and 9 out of 10 proposals are not viewed. Competing with countries with a lower standard of living is a race to the bottom. This often amounts to working for minimum wage on a 3D medical animation device or pharma drug, its a pathetic joke.

Great platform for freelancers

Upwork has been a great platform for my freelancing journey. The interface is intuitive, and it provides smooth client communication and reliable payment tracking. Highly recommended for skilled professionals.

Everything is good in Upwork, but these…

Everything is good in Upwork, but these days Upwork focus more on collecting more taxes from both parties... And that's the one thing which I hate most.
Rest projects tracking system is doing great as usuall. One more thing these days I don't find much jobs in Upwork I hope this is a temporary thing.

A decline that is needed.

Very poor platform these days. Reddit community full of freelancers agree as do clients who have left due to Upwork's 10% increase for clients. I opened my own business and since have taken clients from Upwork and will continue to do so. They use bots to review proposals before clients even see them and that causes most qualified freelancers to be overlooked. Don't get me started on their "Customer Support". At best its a place holder. Other similar platforms have seen an increase as due to conversion over to their respective marketplaces. Like JetBrains and Freelancer.com. Not to mention they are being suspected of creating a fictitious market place of jobs just to hopefully lure freelancers in to spend connects thinking they have a chance. Most positive reviews are upwork bots and employees. Their fiscal quarter numbers the last 4 or 5 reinforce their failed attempts to screw over clients and freelancers.

Be careful

I just want to warn clients to be careful. I had a really bad experience with a freelancer on upwork recently. Freelancer tried to get me to end contract and hire her under someone else's account, with claims that Upwork was getting ready to close her account because of two complaints but yet she still has her account. She also keeps communicating with me outside of the platform including asking me to pay her outside of Upwork although the contract has ended and I just want people to be wary of who they hire because I would have never hired her knowing what I know now.

Poor Support, and a Frustrating Experience

There is very little to like about Upwork. The only reason I used the platform was because my client insisted on it; otherwise, I would never have chosen Upwork.

The market is extremely saturated, with 40–50 proposals competing for a single job. On top of that, freelancers are expected to spend additional Connects to boost their proposals, making the entire process feel like a money-making scheme rather than a fair opportunity to find work. You end up spending money just to compete for jobs, with no guarantee of getting hired.

Another major drawback is Upwork’s poor currency conversion rate when withdrawing earnings to a bank account. Freelancers work hard to earn their money, only to lose more of it due to unfavourable exchange rates and withdrawal fees. Considering the platform fees freelancers already pay, this feels unreasonable.

What makes the experience even worse is the lack of support for freelancers. If a client scams you or leaves an unfair review, Upwork does not seem willing to properly investigate or provide meaningful assistance. Even when a review is unjustified, getting it removed seems almost impossible. Meanwhile, the negative review and low star rating can damage your profile, lower your overall rating, and affect your chances of securing future work.

Overall, Upwork feels like a platform that prioritises making money from freelancers over providing them with a fair, transparent, and supportive working environment. Between the oversaturated job market, the cost of competing for projects, poor currency conversion rates, and inadequate freelancer support, the experience is extremely frustrating.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend Upwork to freelancers looking for a fair and reliable platform to grow their business.
