I used NZ US Tax Specialists in 2017 and 2018. It was very expensive, but at least the first year it was efficient. The second year was very, very frustrating. Lack of communication, slow work, unanswered emails and phone calls. In the end I had to pay a late fee for taxes owed -- even though I had had everything ready by February; it was NZ US Tax Specialists who were late. I got no refund. Though I have to assume the return was done well, the whole experience was time-wasting and frustrating.
The last 2 years I have used CPAs for Expats. What a difference! Fast. Efficient. All emails answered in less than 24 hours. All done in less than 2 weeks. And far, far cheaper (as in 1/3 the price)!

My 2017 US Taxes were prepared by NZ-US Tax Specialists and the amount owed was twice what I expected. As the amount was over $30,000 USD, I paid Taxes for Expats to review the return. I was informed the return was not prepared correctly. I had Taxes for Expats redo my 2017 tax filing and this showed me owing $15,000 USD. This was what I had expected, but as the difference was $15,000, I had a 3rd US tax specialist review both returns and was informed that the return from NZ-US Tax Specialists was incorrect and the that the filing done by Taxes for Expats was done properly. At this point I had Taxes for Expats file return and paid them $884 NZD. I sent an e-mail to NZ-US Tax Specialists explaining this and requesting that the fees I had pay them be refunded to me. That e-mail was sent 31 October, 2018 and I have not received any response from NZ-US Tax Specialists and certainly have not received any refund. Had I filed the return they prepared I would have overpaid my tax by $15,000 (that's about $23,000 NZD). This is a huge mistake with a significant financial impact. I am very disappointed that NZ-US Tax Specialists has failed to respond and to return the money I paid them. I have e-mailed them again and will see if they reply.
