The sale is used as a bait-and-switch

The sale is used as a bait-and-switch tactic; after booking, the car is suddenly no longer available, and you are forced to switch to a more expensive or inferior vehicle. Stay away!

Inflexible

We wanted to hire a car for about 5 weeks. Clyde only rents cars for 3+ months, but for 1 or 2 months, they have a partnership with Europcar. When we picked up the car, we asked if we could extend the rental for a few days or weeks, and Europcar said yes - so we did just that when our first month was coming to a close.
Then we got an email from Clyde saying they were charging us for the full month.... Hey Clyde, if you delegate everything to Europcar for that rental, then either make sure they know that they can only extend by full months, or accept what they offer to the customer!

Expensive, unresponsive, and a nasty surprise at the end

Our three-month experience with Clyde was disappointing. Delivery and collection fees are high, and getting hold of customer service is extremely difficult — calls go unanswered and emails can take a long time to receive a response, usually citing “high volume”.

The worst came after returning the car. Despite having comprehensive insurance with a CHF 1,500 excess and having reported an accident in advance (a scratch on the door that happened in a parking), we have now been invoiced almost CHF 7,000 for damage and other charges.

We are disputing the invoice, so I will update this review once Clyde responds. But based on our experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering Clyde to read the return conditions very carefully and document the condition of the car in detail. However, based on the other reviews, it seems like that would be rather futile too. As this is their business model.

Clyde was very appealing at the first…

Clyde was very appealing at the first step to contract the rental. It is a total different story when you return the car, they charge very unfair and not justified repairs costs despite no evidence on pictures taken. I do not recommend , in the end with all extra costs they charge it is very very expensive.

Clyde's business model

I don't want to waste any more of my time on Clyde. So here's a quick warning to everyone: As has already been noted in other reviews, Clyde's business model is based on ripping people off when they return their vehicles. Even for vehicles with more than 60,000 km on the odometer and that are 4 years old, they expect a brand-new car when it's returned.

Good car, but expensive, inflexible and difficult to plan around

Overall, I would rate my experience with Clyde 2 out of 5 stars.

There are some positive points. The booking process makes it clear exactly which car you will receive, rather than only promising a vehicle category. The car itself was also in good condition and I had no complaints about its quality.

However, the subscription feels far too expensive and inflexible overall.

The mandatory delivery fee of CHF 290 is hard to justify, especially because there was no option to collect the car myself and avoid the fee. For a shorter subscription, this one-off charge can easily add around CHF 100 per month to the real cost of the car.

Returning the car creates another significant charge or inconvenience: either pay CHF 150 for collection, or bring the car back yourself. I can do this in my case, but for many customers the return location may be far away and cost considerable time. It is difficult to understand why both the delivery and return process come with such high additional costs.

The return process is also unnecessarily restrictive. You cannot simply return the car during normal opening hours; you need to arrange a specific appointment. This adds another layer of planning and makes the service less convenient than a car subscription should be.

The delivery timeline was my biggest issue. At the time of booking, there was no reliable delivery date. You only receive an update once the car is ready, which can mean waiting several weeks without knowing whether it will be three, four or five weeks. I booked the car specifically for an upcoming trip, but it was delivered only after those plans. I therefore had to arrange another car, which defeated the purpose of the subscription.

I was also surprised by how extensively every small mark or imperfection was photographed during handover. Documenting a vehicle is reasonable, but the process felt very strict. I have seen other reviews mentioning high charges for minor damage, so I will be paying close attention to the return process.

Because I booked under a promotional offer, extending the subscription would increase my monthly price by almost 50%. Even at the discounted rate, the overall value does not feel convincing. In my view, the price would need to be at least another 30% lower to reflect the limited flexibility, uncertain delivery timeline and high one-off fees.

What Clyde could improve:

* Provide a clear and realistic delivery or collection date before customers complete a booking.
* Reconsider the CHF 290 delivery fee and CHF 150 collection fee, particularly for shorter subscriptions.
* Allow customers to return vehicles during normal opening hours instead of requiring a fixed appointment in every case.
* Offer more collection and return locations. Having only one location in Lupfig can be impractical for customers who live far away.
* Make the overall process more flexible and predictable, which is one of the main reasons people choose a car subscription.

The car itself was good, but I would not recommend Clyde based on the overall value, high mandatory fees and lack of flexibility.

Lots of hidden costs.

Lots of hidden costs.
With Clyde, get ready to pay more.
As not stated when you book you have to pay for a high delivery fee of 290.-CHF and a return fee in of 150 .- CHF.
Together with high charges for any single mark even if the car is already quite old. I had a parking bump from a door opening of another car and they said they would have to repaint the whole door and took the full insurance deductible.
A pitty as their business model would be conveniant if positively managed.

Unfortunately very bad service

Unfortunately, our experience with Clyde so far has been very disappointing.

When we signed the contract, we were told the delivery time would be around two weeks. In reality, however, it took around two and a half months for the vehicle to be delivered. When we raised the issue, there was no real willingness to accommodate us. The response essentially amounted to: “You’re free to cancel.”

Even when the car was handed over, it was not in perfect working order. The fault was reported immediately, but nothing happened at first. It was only after we had asked three times that we were finally given an appointment to have it repaired.

The very poor communication and the repeated failure to meet deadlines are particularly disappointing. Overall, this leaves an impression of a company that is not very customer-focused.

Based on these experiences, we cannot currently recommend Clyde and advise you to research alternative providers thoroughly before signing a contract.

It had been a good experience until…

It had been a good experience until their last invoice came... and - just to know. They send a request to review the experience BEFORE that last invoice so I thought there wouldn't be one. We had the car for four years and they want us to pay two VERY little scratches and put real high pressure with a one day invoice and don't react to a prompt email. If it is not possible for someone to talk on the phone, you are not able to solve the issues by yourself on time. The returning procedure is what matters most. And here, Clyde is totally disappointing.

Not excited! Expensive.

Well, very mixed bag of experience.

+ online procedures of hiring etc. is pretty straigth forward and highly digitized.

- Once the car is returned. Please be ready to pay exorbitantly high costs for "defect" fixing, e.g., a piece of plastic accounts for CHF 500.--. A touch to the wheel rim will cost you 300.-- (!). Add this sort of calculation in, before ordering with Clyde.

- They offer "free charging" of electric cars with the options to get money back if the car is chared in non-public spaces, e.g. at home. Well, think twice if you really want to have this: They embed the public charging of (let's say) 90 cents/kW in the overall price and give back 30 cents/kW for home charging. Hence, you just overpaid 60 cents/kW. Furthermore, they grant "vouchers" for the reclaim BUT they never do not automatically deduct and do not even mention that a voucher can be seen in the account for manual (!) redemption. And to make things worse, if your in the last month of your rental, you're cannot redeem vouchers because "you'll have to do it with the next rental". Therefore, do NOT opt for the "free charging" - you'll be better off without it.

While Clyde looked well at the beginning. This was not a pleasant experience.
