Build Success that Feels as Good as it Looks
We’ve been taught that success comes from working as hard as you can, and then adding meditation, cold plunges, or time boxing so you can do more 🙄
But improvement is only possible when there’s available capacity.
We cannot keep piling on to-do’s, habits, commitments, and expect ourselves to make it work.
To improve — in performance, impact, or wellbeing — we must learn the power of subtraction. Removing what no longer works to avoid the trap of diminishing returns.
If the idea of loosening your grip enough to let go of a committee meeting, board title, or a prized identity feels dangerous, you’re not alone.
I felt that way. And then, in my distracted state of overwhelm, I drifted out of my lane, head on into a 20-ton landscaping truck. Thankfully, I — and the people in the other car — were unharmed.
But the gravity of the impact revealed the true danger: doing too much.
I recognized that how I drove was how I showed up for clients, friends, and myself. So I looked to systems thinking for insight about how to avoid crashing again, lest I be less lucky the next time.
Because in interdependent systems, force can’t fix structural flaws.
Subtract to Succeed is where we answer that persistent question: “Is this really all there is?” We apply Systematic Subtraction: using systems thinking to design a life that leads to sustainable and satisfying success.
Why This Matters Now
Big-hearted, ambitious leaders (often women) are overworked, overwhelmed, and under-supported. They are succeeding in public, but eroding in private. They’re admired for their capacity, but at unseen costs.
These women, who influence capital and culture, are not OK.
But we need them. We need you. Now more than ever.
That is why I am a Subtraction Activist.
My mission is to help the helpers get back to aliveness — by releasing what drains their energy so they can prioritize what actually matters. Not the things we think we should do to be nice. To get ahead. To set a good example. To earn our rest.

Subtraction is how we protect what actually compounds: energy, integrity, impact. And systems thinking is the tool to swap exhaustion for win-win-wins.
We subtract to succeed, so we can do more good, without doing more.

Subtract to Succeed is my laboratory for Systematic Subtraction. This approach isn’t prescriptive. Or lofty, leaving you with motivational quotes or elaborate routines that feel a million miles away from your life.
It’s a rigorously human approach to reducing the noise so you can have the impact you care about having, without sacrificing your wellbeing, performance, or fulfillment.
Systematic Subtraction is based on my own life experience, working in all three sectors on four continents; studies of psychology, leadership, and ethics; and the natural wisdom of horses. As well as real time insights from other 3D leaders and Subtract to Succeed readers like you.
We’ll explore:

Who I Am
I’m Nell Derick Debevoise Dewey, Subtraction Activist. I help women who influence capital and culture to build success that feels as good as it looks.
I’ve gone from Harvard to horse arenas, collecting degrees from Cambridge, Columbia, and London Business School, and learning the hard way that checking every box doesn’t guarantee you’ll like the prize.
After missing my father’s funeral and choosing my impact career over my first marriage, I realized the problem wasn’t purpose or ambition — it was misalignment.
That experience informed my Lead in 3D™ framework, which recognizes that by simultaneously pursuing goals for Me, We, and World, we can achieve more good — without doing more.
Then, deeply aligned and inspired, I learned another major lesson from a literal collision. And that led me to appreciate the importance of building the muscle of subtraction.
Some of my best teachers have four legs and have evolved to thrive throughout all kinds of challenge. Their lessons in presence, energy conservation, and congruence are foundations of Systematic Subtraction.
