About Matt Pearce

I’m a writer and public policy advocate in Los Angeles who writes about power, media and democracy.

I was a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, where I covered national news, politics and culture. I contributed to the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. I helped unionize the newsroom and co-founded and led Media Guild of the West, a NewsGuild-CWA local that represents local journalists across the Southwest U.S. As a labor leader I thought Big Tech needed as much if not even more scrutiny than media companies for what was happening to local news.

In my day job, I help work on public subsidies that support local journalists.

This free newsletter is a record of what I am reading and thinking about, and reflects my views and mine alone. You can subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and publication archives.
