ABOUT

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes.” Lao Tzu

You’ll find out about the many changes throughout my long life, through memoir, essays, snippets, humor, photos, poems, travel tales and award-winning travel podcasts, and thoughts I just can’t keep to myself.

If you like essays about people, you’ve found the right place. Much of my writing on this site is about those famous and infamous, lucky and down on luck, and of course, my idiosyncratic family — all of them interesting parts of my life, worth writing and reading about.

A bit of background: I’ve been a travel writer for much of my life, as managing editor of a travel publication, contributor to dozens of guidebooks, columnist, and writer of thousands of articles. But I also taught writing at universities, and headed a company that taught writing to corporations and government. I freelanced for everything from newspaper columns, encyclopedias (under letters ‘O’ and P’ in the Oxford Encyclopedia for Children!) to features in The New York Times.

Of my eight books, the latest is the award-winning Places I Remember: Tales, Truths, Delights from 100 Countries. And forbes.com is my current travel-blogging home. If you go to my website, you’ll find links to just about everything Lea!

My first-person writings here on Substack cover mid-twentieth century to right now, and the inevitable changes that come with living large, long and all over the place.

I like to change things up all the time. I can be funny, sometimes moving — but always real.

I hope you’ll enjoy finding out more about the past eighty years or so, and just maybe, through my memories and insights here on Lane Changes, even more about yourself.

And … A BIT MORE ABOUT ME

A mom, wife and grandma, I’m also an award-winning writer, author and podcaster (Places I Remember with Lea Lane). I’ve been around the block and the world (over 100 countries), and write about the fascinating people, places, and things I’ve discovered.

I married young, divorced late; married later, was widowed early. Soloed for a long while, and then, surprise — third time’s been a charm. I’ve been strapped, well-off and “I’m not sure.” I survived scary illnesses, founded a business, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy! I’m a grandma and a badass, too.

I’ve won lots of writing awards, and there’s lots to share of life, love, hope, and change. I hope you’ll join us.
