What is Singing Christ’s Hope Into Chronic Illness and Pain?
Sister in Christ, if you suffer from chronic illness and pain, you know how difficult it can be to read God’s Word. You know our continual losses and challenges go far beyond the physical. We need Scriptural truth to sink deep when our bodies, minds, and emotions uniquely scream in the chronic. I’ve been through it all, for over 30-plus years.
By God’s healing mercy with two brain surgeries as treatments for my incurable illnesses, I’ve had the joy of being able to work as a music educator, church music director, music therapist, music researcher, and author. I must share it all with you.
Singing Scriptural songs reminds me of our hope in Christ, God’s gracious, powerful, and practically helpful gift, as I suffer horrific pain in the valley. Jesus has come so near to me in singing Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. I’m praying this offering will help to ease your pain as well.
When I’m in the darkness of suffering, gospel-centered and Christ-exalting songs help me do this:
“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8 ESV).
