Weaving a tapestry of life’s little moments…

I’m a kiwi and I love my home - I love all the little moments that make life here all it is. And I like to call life’s little moments small glories. You know what I mean; the first daffodil in spring, wild hair on a stormy walk at the beach, a hug in the airport, a cat asleep in the sun, tears listening to a song, tea, birthday cake, a group of old ladies on a sunrise sea swim, a shoulder to sleep on, a funny overheard conversation, a postcard, a 90-year-old with AirPods, a story from Grandad, and an ocean dip on the winter solstice.

I attempt to capture these moments in words and images. To me they are threads in the tapestry of life. Various emotions, various colours, all weave together to form a vivid picture of what it means to live.

Why join me?

I write an essay each week (ish) on something about New Zealand life. I invite you too to share your small, glorious moments from the week with this community.

Scattered in amongst that, will appear other little thoughts and small glories - because really, these moments can’t keep themself to a schedule, that’s the beauty of life.

Who am I?

My name is Kate Atkinson, I’m a kiwi girl from the bottom of the world, born and raised in coastal Aotearoa New Zealand.

I have grown up surrounded by stunning natural scenery that is hard to pass by without stopping in your tracks in awe. This is where my words first began to flow. Ever since I was little I have written, but not until my early teens did I really appreciate the freedom it gave me. All the triumphs and tribulations life brought flowed out of my pen. I would take my notebook to the beach, to the bush, up mountains, and by rivers. And like constantly moving Mother Nature, my pen followed. The passing of a friend, the overcoming of a big injury, the ecstasy of summiting actual mountains, and the bliss of the ocean (among multitudes of other things) have all come to shape my perspective on life.

I play hockey and the cornet, I am a certified scuba diver and an avid ocean dipper, and I love time with my friends and family doing nearly anything. Books line my bedroom and my camera and notebook are constant companions.

Kia ora, welcome. So glad you are here!
