About the Author Behind Indie Author Insights

Welcome! I’m Kathy Gerstorff — Writer, Coach, and Founder of the Indie Authors Association. My mission is simple: to empower writers to not only create meaningful work, but to build sustainable, fulfilling author careers.

Through Indie Author Insights, a monthly publication of the Indie Authors Association, I share resources, strategies, and encouragement to help indie authors navigate the business side of creativity — from editing and publishing to promotion and community building.

As a Certified Guerrilla Marketing Coach since 2008, I guide authors and creatives in low-cost, high-impact strategies that get results without burnout.

My journey has been anything but ordinary: writer, blogger, podcaster, editor, publisher, band manager, nonprofit marketing director, bookstore owner, serial entrepreneur, and more. The common thread has always been creativity, lifelong learning, and helping others share their stories.

I write poetry, short stories, and nonfiction on topics ranging from nature, health, and healing to marketing and mindset. Anthologies that support good causes have a special place in my heart. My work has appeared in numerous anthologies and poetry collections, including Naturally Yours, Nature Matters, SCARS: Poems & Short Stories About Mental Health and Healing, and the Break the Cycle series.

At the core, I believe:

  • Every writer deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.

  • Vulnerability in writing — especially about healing and mental health — is powerful.

  • Growth and openness to change are essential to the creative spirit.

Beyond writing, I’m a book lover, nature enthusiast, music fan, and plant-based nutrition advocate. One of my dreams is to open a community-centered indie author bookstore where bookworms and creatives connect.

I’ve walked many paths on the writer’s journey since first falling in love with words in the 70’s. I know the highs and lows — the creative joy, the business challenges, and the self-doubt. My passion is helping writers bridge the gap between potential and fulfillment so they can thrive without sacrificing their soul or life savings!

I’d love to hear your story. You can connect with me here on Substack, at WriterKat.com, or by email at Kathy@indieauthorsassociation.com.
