I’ve spent much of my life fighting to tell stories that matter—first as an activist, then as a journalist, podcast host and documentarian.
I was taught the power of words. I saw how narratives could shape lives, build communities, and break barriers. But I also saw how mainstream media often distorts the truth, feeding us fear and anxiety instead of giving us the tools to act.
Over the years I became frustrated with how the media, both traditional and digital, often focuses on problems without offering real solutions.
That’s how In Depth With Deon was born.
This newsletter and podcast are here to do more than report the news. They’re here to connect dots, share context, and provide the tools we need to move from awareness to action. The journey toward solutions begins with understanding the shared pain of others—and that starts with listening.
Listening to the stories of those who are too often overlooked, those who are fighting battles we don’t always see, and those who are making real change from the ground up.
I believe we can create a new kind of media—one that puts solutions over sensationalism and empowers us to not just consume news, but to become active participants in shaping the future.

The Early Years: Rooted in Activism
From a young age, I felt a deep sense of fairness and the need to make the world better for those who were pushed to the margins. Raised ignorant of the stories of my ancestors’ struggles and resilience, I didn’t understood the importance of standing up for what’s right until learning about the power of journalism as a student at the University of Oklahoma.
This led me to activism—specifically in areas that directly affected Black and Indigenous communities, marginalized groups, and anyone fighting against systemic oppression.
Journalism: Finding My Voice and Platform
My path to journalism was fueled by a desire to amplify the stories that are often ignored, overlooked, or misrepresented in mainstream media. Over time, I realized that journalism was the perfect tool to not only inform but to empower people.
I honed my journalistic skills as senior reporter and managing editor with The Black Wall Street Times, where I’ve spent years telling stories that mattered, interviewing everyone from White House politicians to prisoners in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
My experience has helped me understand the power of storytelling to bring attention to the injustices people face, but also to show the strength of communities working together for change.
The Creative Journey: Merging Storytelling and Impact
Creativity has always been a driving force in my work. Whether it was my freelance documentaries, my podcast, or my articles, I’ve always believed that great storytelling can inspire action. Over the years, I combined my journalistic skills with my love for creative expression—using film, photography, and digital media to create compelling content that pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo.
I also found that art has a special power to heal. Whether it’s through a podcast episode, a visual piece, or a social media post, the ability to reach someone on a deeper emotional level is an essential tool in creating change. My creative journey allows me to connect with people in new ways, fostering understanding and compassion while also creating space for difficult conversations.
In Depth With Deon: Where Activism, Journalism, and Creativity Collide
All of these elements—activism, journalism, and creativity—came together to shape the vision behind In Depth With Deon. This newsletter, podcast, and content platform is the culmination of my life’s work. Through it, I aim to shine a light on both the struggles and the victories of marginalized communities, pushing for a future of liberation and justice.
In Depth With Deon is about solutions. It’s about focusing on what works, not just what’s wrong. And it’s about amplifying the voices of people who’ve been silenced for too long. This space is for anyone who’s tired of the fear-based news cycle and wants to make a real difference.
