Poor and traumatic experience throughout

Our experience with Dollar Rent A Car at Los Angeles International Airport in September 2026 has been nothing short of appalling. We arrived at LAX on 5 September following a ten-hour flight from the UK, having prepaid for our rental vehicle through StressFreeCarRental. Despite being told that a vehicle would be available within approximately an hour, we were left waiting for almost FIVE HOURS overnight. Staff eventually told us there were no vehicles available, and we were given no reliable indication of when we would receive one. We lost a substantial part of our first night’s hotel accommodation. During collection, we were encouraged to purchase an expensive toll package. After speaking with a Hertz representative, we discovered that the toll roads could be avoided on our planned route. We asked Dollar to remove the package and were assured this would be done. We were then told to take any vehicle with keys in it and speak to the car-park exit attendant. Apart from a small transfer/exchange receipt, we were never provided with proper rental documentation. Our problems continued. On 30 September, while returning the vehicle to LAX, a tyre suddenly failed without any collision or impact with road debris. The vehicle had no spare tyre. What followed was an exhausting experience with Dollar Roadside Assistance. We spent hours making telephone calls, repeatedly explaining our situation and location. We were initially told transport would be arranged to take us to the airport, only to be told later that we would have to arrange our own. We were forced to pay £89.19 for an Uber to LAX. We had also attempted to report some very minor scratches discovered during the rental, but experienced further problems with Dollar’s reporting system. Then, on 3 October, Dollar took a further $570.49 (£433.08) from our credit card. No invoice. No explanation. No breakdown. No notification whatsoever. We still do not know what this charge relates to. Despite complaints being raised and StressFreeCarRental confirming that it has escalated matters to Dollar, we have received NOT ONE DIRECT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OR RESPONSE FROM DOLLAR. The whole experience has been characterised by poor communication, inadequate customer service and an extraordinary lack of accountability. We have retained photographs, receipts, correspondence and evidence of the charges. We are still awaiting an explanation, reimbursement of our additional expenses and a satisfactory resolution. Based on our experience, we would not recommend Dollar Rent A Car.

Possible price gouging.

I booked the vehicle through Priceline. I was quoted a price when I reserved it. When I arrived to pick up the car, there were not enough counter people to handle the customers. Then they informed me I had to pay for liability insurance. Then I had to decide on a toll package. The fees added up and should have been disclosed when I made the reservation. In today's day and age, when the vehicle is returned, it should be easy to run the tag through a computer system to see what exact tools were incurred during the rental. The driver could pay that amount upon return. This is an unfair business practice and should be investigated as price gouging, in my opinion.

I would give zero stars if I could

I would give zero stars if I could. I waited in line for over an hour. People at the counter were barely working. Use sixt, hertz, budget, Alamo or National. They didn’t have any lines. Dollar and thrifty are terrible. They sent me a text saying skip the line and pick your car but would only let me upgrade. Never again will I use dollar or thrifty at slc.

Dollar Car Rental Orlando Airport – check your contract VERY carefully

I would like to warn other travelers about my recent experience with Dollar Car Rental at Orlando International Airport (MCO).

When picking up the car, the agent offered me the toll package for $14.99 per day. She told me that without it I could face fines, so based on that information I agreed to the toll option.

However, I never requested or agreed to Premium Road Service.

Afterwards I discovered that Premium Road Service had nevertheless been marked as “ACCEPTED” on my rental agreement and I was charged $9.99 per day – $79.92 in total, plus the associated taxes and fees.

I am absolutely certain that I did not agree to this service.

What concerns me even more is that, after searching online, I found reports from other Dollar customers describing very similar experiences with optional services, including Premium Road Service.

I obviously cannot prove whether the service was left selected deliberately in my particular case. But I find it extremely difficult to understand how a paid optional service that I never requested or accepted can simply appear as “ACCEPTED” on my contract.

International tourists are particularly vulnerable to this kind of situation. We pick up a car after a long flight, trust the employee to enter what was actually agreed, and often only discover additional charges later. By then, we may already have returned the car or even left the United States.

I have contacted Dollar and requested a full refund of the Premium Road Service charge and the related taxes and fees.

My advice to anyone renting from Dollar at MCO:

Check every single line on the screen and rental agreement before signing. Do not assume that only the extras you verbally agreed to have been selected. Take a photo or screenshot of the agreement if possible and check the final receipt again when returning the vehicle.

A rental company should earn money from services its customers knowingly purchase – not from optional products customers discover on their bill afterwards.

I would also be interested to hear whether anyone else has recently experienced the same thing with Dollar at Orlando Airport, particularly with Premium Road Service.

As bad as it gets

First let me begin and say my rental was made by AAA with Dollar Rental. I had made it clear to both that I wished to pay for this service in full using my credit card. My contract was for a little over $800, picking up the car in Salt Lake City Ut. on 09/22/26 and returning it to Tucson Az. 0n 10/3/26. this was done in February of 2026 and my credit card was charged the full amount. On 09/22/26, I arrived to pick up the car and was advised that I had to pay a $560 return fee because I was returning it to a different location as well as $137 fee for local taxes. Shocked because this made my rental over $1500. I was stuck because they already had $800 and i could not get another rental. So my credit card was used again. The car ended up being a Jeep Cherokee instead of the Nissan Rouge I had signed for. It was not clean and has less than a full tank of gas that is required upon return. And, get this, it had Maryland plates on it, so some poor bastard had already paid another return fee before me! No one was at their service desk to help me locate the vehicle or show me anything about the equipment in the vehicle. I returned the vehicle to Tucson Az. per agreement on 10/3/26 and will never use this rental company again. I have used other car rentals before and this is by far the worse service I have ever had and as far as the return fee is concerned, I knew there would be a difference, but it should have been laid out in the first payment, not at pick up. 0 stars is not available so 1. Poor customer service and Poor representation.

I wish I could rate them lower. Never rent from them. Walk instead.

I wish I could rate them lower. They are liars. Our car was gross, dented, scratched up, burn mark in the car stuff smeared in the inside that we didn't notice until we were on our way to our destination. Then they tried to hit us with a 250.00 fee for smoking in the car. My wife and I don't smoke. Called immediately, sent pictures and I was told that a manager wasn't there and they would call me the next day, they didn't, I had to call them, then the manager wouldn't even talk to me and said through an associate that they had to talk to the owner and look at the cameras. No resolution yet.

AVOID Dollar Rental!!

AVOID Dollar Rental!!! This company is the W.O.A.T (worst of all time, owned by equally ridiculous Hertz). Tried to charge us $450 to extend our rental by 6 hours (the actual rental was $41/day). We also waited an hour in a long line for service and watched 2 out of 3 staff take a break with 30 people waiting. Don’t be fooled by the initial low quote- you will pay in the end in hidden fees and frustration.

With storms hitting Dallas

With storms hitting Dallas, my flight was grounded for 3 hours. I opted to get a car to rent in Lubbock, where we landed and drive to my destination, Tyler TX. With that said, Dollar rental refused to refund the full cost of the car. I understand that this is their policy, but circumstances were out of my control. I'm sure they made a nice profit that day by scamming people that were grounded. 1500 flights were not able to fly for hours. They made made pay for 3 days out of 5 of my reserved rental. I would have changed my reservation to a different dollar location, but there was not one in the area. Thanks for giving people a break instead of profiting off an unavoidable situation.

Unbelievable Bait and Switch

Unbelievable. I was told my vehicle choice was not available and would i accept a different vehicle. At no time was I informed that due to their inability to provide my car choice that I would have to pay an up-charge. I recommend not using Dollar unless you want to get stuck trying to rectify what they did through their AI web site options.

Poor Customer service by automation and phone support

I desired an extension of my car rental. Dollar sent me a text to make me think I could extend my car rental. It failed to work to obtain an extension with no explanation. Phone support was worthless, no reason provided. I was forced to return the car to the airport and rent with another company. DO NOT USE DOLLAR. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.

Avoid Dollar/Hertz car hire

This has all makings of a scam. They found ‘new’ damage by feeling under the car, not possible to see unless lying down in car park. No evidence that this was not there before, with much earlier pictures. Geneva Airport Hertz area, Swiss side

Worst experience ever

Worst experience ever, paid for the rental in advance on Priceline. Get to the airport the line was extremely long, and the workers were moving like turtles, holding conversations etc., I verified that my payment method was accepted as well as the amount of the deposit. Well I get there and I am told they dont take my form of payment, keep in mind I paid for the car with the exact card. I then transferred the money to another card, well it was not a credit card, a credit check was performed and I was told I needed a credit card. I have still not gotten my money back, 308.00 I felt scammed and they are horrible.

Rent with caution

Customer service agent Ken was rude, disrespectful and mocked me on the phone. All I wanted to do was change my drop off location from one airport to another and on the dollar website it said it would be a $12.99 fee. Well Ken said they were going to charge me $349. I said absolutely not and stated to him what the website said and his reply was..."do you want me to change it or not?". I have never been treated so badly and I would give 0 stars if I could. I will never use this rental company again! Rent with caution.

I booked through expedia

I booked through expedia. The staff at the counter refused to honor the service stating I booked at an international rate and should either pay them $170 or book again at a domestic rate which I refused and asked for refund. I was promised refund but to my utter surprise they charged me without providing the service. Expedia also refused to refune statimg Dollar was not returning the charges. They are a complete fraud.

I tried to just be done with Dollar…

I tried to just be done with Dollar Rent a Car, but emails never stop even after unsubscribing to emails. The rental car company is so bad that it's not worth the savings. Customer service when seeking help is appalling. They keep trying to charge you more even though you've used a third party company for reservations. I will not use this rental agency, again.

If i can give them negative stars I…

If i can give them negative stars I would. My experience picking up the car was great, super fast and efficient. Returning the car was a different story. I dropped the car off at the exact time and day it was due, there is zero guidance on how or where to put keys where to go who to talk to ect. I parked the car in the stall I picked it up from and asked the front desk lady what to do for returns and she told us to leave the car there and leave the keys in the car which we did. The next few days I started to receive texts saying my car was never returned followed by multiple charges to my card. I get being super busy at this location and not having enough hands but at least be diligent, how can you not see the car is parked right in the stall.
