welcome to the etymology nerd newsletter!

Hi! I’m Adam Aleksic. I’m a linguist and influencer publishing videos as the Etymology Nerd to an audience of over three million. I have a degree in government and linguistics from Harvard University, where I served as President of the Harvard Undergraduate Linguistics Society, and I’ve been communicating about linguistics for almost a decade.

Most of my work explores the intersections between culture and technology. I am the author of the NYT bestselling book Algospeak, and I have written for the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Financial Times. I’ve lectured on language and social media at dozens of top universities, am a TED speaker, and frequently appear on NPR and NBC.

“"A masterclass in linguistic evolution... Algospeak is a must read for anyone seeking to understand how we communicate today." - Taylor Lorenz, author of Extremely Online

about this substack

In addition to my short-form video content, I’m aiming to publish long-form thoughts here about once a week. I typically focus on the intersections between language and social media, and all my writing is available for free.

Paid subscribers will have access to my subscriber chat, and support my mission of reaching as many people as possible.

Either way, you can subscribe to get my newsletter in your inbox and access to the publication archives.
