Who am I?

I am a white midwestern girl in my 30’s who overthinks stories. So now I’m doing it in public. I like horses and fantasy and gin cocktails and far too much coffee. Follow along if you want granular deep dives into both popular and obscure stories, from a Christian perspective but with a fair dose of snark.

What’s in a Name?

“What Else Can I do,” the title of my Substack, is taken directly from the title of the song Isabel sings in Disney’s Encanto. An essay about Encanto was the first thing I published here. I also circled back for another look at Isabel specifically, and what her story tells us about art and creation.

But the name has more layers and meanings that just that one: as a mom in her 30’s who is trying to find herself again as a writer, I chose that title for my page as a reminder to keep branching out and pushing myself and discovering what I am capable of.

And finally and most importantly, it is a reference to Peter’s words in John 6 when Jesus asks the twelve disciples, “Do you also want to go away?” and Peter replies, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)
I have my questions and hang ups about my faith but I’m still here for similar reasons to Peter. What else can I do?

Come with Me on this Mission… Quest… Thing

Michael Card wrote that there is a “Joy in the Journey.”

Taylor Swift says “the winding road leads to the chateau.”

J.R.R. Tolkien told us (via Bilbo’s poetry) that “Not all those who wander are lost.”

But, fair warning, I might actually be lost. Still, I’m a fun walking companion. Except I whine a lot and I have the attention span of a squirrel. But come along anyway. Let’s find out where we’re going.
