Neneh Cherry performing on Top of the Pops nine months pregnant was my template for motherhood…and I know off by heart all the interlude skits on ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ by De La Soul. Speaking of keeping your head above water - I remain a cult author/ single Mum and rely on paid subscriptions to stay afloat right now. Some numbers for you: I have published seven books (maybe eight? I genuinely lose track?) if you’re here on purpose your favourite might by Your Voice In My Head, Royals, Busy Being Free or Namedropper (which was my debut, at 21). Now I am forty seven or forty eight, I have to call my sister to help me remember how old I am each time (I was born early, not in the year I was meant to be). I have a lot to say about my transition from mentally unstable Enfant terrible to the power, calm and confidence I’ve unlocked in middle age. For my 40th birthday I directed my first movie, and it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (it’s called Untogether and you can rent it on amazon or iTunes). I wish I could show you my grateful looking face when someone hits paid subscription…you can imagine it.
