Welcome to The Last Layer by Colin King
Hi, I’m Colin King. I just moved a bowl an inch to the left and felt something unlock in my soul. If you’re here, it probably means you clicked “about,” which means you’re curious. I love that.
I’m a stylist, designer, and the author of Arranging Things. I’ve styled shoots for Architectural Digest, T Magazine, Zara Home, and a handful of other places that trust me to rearrange their objects until everything feels like a sigh of relief. I’ve also designed products, consulted for brands, and stared at a lot of shelves until something quietly clicked.
But The Last Layer is where I get to share the things I don’t post on Instagram. The process. The doubt. The thoughts I usually keep to myself until a friend asks what I really think about millwork or lamp cords or the color greige. It’s where I talk about styling as a practice—not just of placement, but of presence.
This Substack is named after the part of design I care about most: the final 10 percent. The instinct. The pause. The slightly off-center object that changes the mood of the room. And maybe your day.
What paid subscribers get:
Full access to my essays and Friday dispatches (objects I love, tools I use, and things I can’t stop thinking about)
A peek behind the curtain of how I style, place, edit, and un-edit (aka the part where I move something four times before realizing it was fine the first way)
AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads a few times a year (let’s spiral about shelves together)
What free subscribers get:
Tuesday essays on styling, mood, and the feelings behind the placement
A shared space to be quietly obsessed with things that barely matter but somehow really do
Here’s the longer version of me:
I studied dance before I studied design. Which maybe explains why I think of styling like choreography—stillness, rhythm, weight, breath. I founded Colin King Studio as a space to keep exploring those things, and now I work across interiors, creative direction, and product design. I’m a contributing stylist to AD, T Magazine, ELLE DECOR, and Ark Journal. I collaborate with Beni Rugs, where I’m Artistic Director-at-Large, and Audo Copenhagen, Cultiver, with more to come.
I wrote Arranging Things as a love letter to everything I couldn’t quite explain about styling. The Last Layer is the next chapter. It’s slower. Softer. Less polished. More personal. It’s for aesthetes, perfectionists in recovery, shelf whisperers, and anyone who knows that the light at 4 p.m. can sometimes say more than a hundred design decisions.
If that sounds like you—welcome. Let’s zhuzh. Let’s pause. Let’s let one bowl do way too much emotional heavy lifting together.
🥀
