About the Classics Tutor
Welcome to Classics Tutor. My name is Donald Donato, and I am a writer, researcher, and tutor specializing in the history of ideas and the enduring legacy of the classical world.
My journey with the classics began in 1989 at Marlboro College, Vermont, where I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Mark Pobjoy—who later served as a Senior Tutor in Classics at Magdalen College, Oxford. Since then, my academic path has taken me through the University of Granada in Spain, St Raphael the Archangel Theological Seminary, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, eventually leading to a body of published work across the fields of history, social science, and international development.
From Ancient Roots to Living Systems
While this journal remains a space for exploring Greek and Roman literature, mythology, and religion, my current research focuses on the Polycentric Community. I am particularly interested in the transition from rigid administrative logic to a more ecological and integral development—a framework that bridges the metaphysical dignity of the person (the Monad) with the structural resilience of the city (the Polis).
At Classics Tutor, we do not view the ancient world as a museum of dead ideas, but as a vibrant laboratory for solving modern challenges. Whether we are discussing the morphology of Mediterranean agrotowns or the Aristotelian foundations of decentralized governance, the goal is to uncover the “Master Narratives” that can help us build more dignified and sustainable social structures today.
Engaging with the Classics
This journal serves as a digital extension of the Oxford-style tutorial. My mission is to provide an accessible yet rigorous introduction to the classical world for everyone. Every article is designed to be a starting point, featuring:
Primary Source Analysis: Direct engagement with the texts of the ancient world.
Integrated Research: Insights that link classical history to modern socio-economics and human ecology.
Further Reading: Curated recommendations for those who wish to delve deeper into the scholarship.
