I recently completed a move from Canada to Portugal contracting with a company in Canada, Bekins Worldwide out of Vancouver, BC. The movers were excellent, timely and picked up my things (5 out of 5 service)- a small shipment by sea to Portugal. I paid the costs and flew to Portugal. Three months in I get notice from the company they partnered with, Anglo Pacific in the UK, that my goods would come off the ship in the UK not Portugal, so there would be additional costs for Customs as my shipment wasn't clearing in Portugal- as per contract. The costs would have been waived in Portugal, as I was relocating and had obtained all the necessary documents from the Portuguese consulate in Canada. I enquired why I would have to pay Customs (900 sterling- extra!), when that was not the final destination for my goods. I also ask for them, if they were clearing customs in UK, could they then complete the required forms so my goods would be waived the Customs fees as would occur when goods enter at a port other than the final destination. Neither company replied to my enquires. I got 'radio silence' from the person I contracted with at Bekins-Michael Knight, and the Anglo Pacific Reps who contacted me. They held my goods hostage. I finally asked them how I was to proceed with paying them the costs, as I expected they would start charging me storage fees, and I managed to reduce the additional to 500 sterling (based on some costing process). Then they started replying again and were friendly. Bekins NEVER responded to me. It took another month to get my things and during that whole time, I was stressed as to what next they would introduce to costs. You are really at their mercy in these situations. I questioned my choice to have taken my things with me due to the stress I was experiencing. However, the movers in Portugal, delivered my things at the time they said they would. As it was with the movers from the Canadian side, they were kind, professional and took very good care-from: packing to delivery. They made me feel grateful for having brought my things. The administration from both companies were horrific and would have resulted in a negative scoring, had it not been for the movers, shippers and packers. The real stars who I would have given 5 out of 5.
