First time using Montway
I had never shipped a car before, and after reading some of the reviews for Montway, I was pretty nervous. One thing I think people should understand upfront is that Montway is essentially a broker. They act as the middleman between you and the actual carrier transporting your vehicle. If something goes wrong with the carrier, Montway’s ability to help appears to be somewhat limited, although they do offer an insurance package that they say provides additional assistance with the claims process.
That being said, my overall experience ended up being pretty good, although it definitely wasn’t perfect.
We scheduled September 14th as the first available pickup date, so you can imagine my surprise when, on September 9th, I received a credit card alert showing that I had been charged approximately $1,600. About an hour later, a transport company called to tell me they were outside my house to pick up the car.
I had to call Montway to find out what was going on because my paperwork very clearly stated that September 14th was the first day the vehicle would be available. That was an unwelcome surprise and pretty frustrating to deal with. To Montway’s credit, they reversed the charge and told me they had corrected the issue.
The actual carrier who ultimately transported my car was very nice and communicated well. Unfortunately, his truck broke down in South Carolina, which caused about a two-day delay in delivery. Things happen, though, and I appreciated that he kept us informed about what was going on rather than leaving us wondering.
Overall, I had a good experience and my car arrived safely. I would use the service again, but based on both my experience and the reviews I read beforehand, it does seem like the experience can be somewhat hit-or-miss depending on the carrier you ultimately get. My biggest advice is to understand that Montway is a broker rather than the company actually transporting your vehicle, and set your expectations accordingly.
