I’m so glad you’re here! Despite the name, this newsletter does not index rocks or moss. Instead, you’ll find plenty of helpful advice and thoughtful essays about recreating outdoors.
Who am I?
My name is Alice and I live in the Upper Midwest where much of my leisure time is spent hiking, backpacking, and doing volunteer trailwork. When I lived in Chicago, I often heard complaints that Chicago isn’t a city for outdoorsy people because there is no “good” nature nearby. I disagreed so strongly that I created a 130+ page database of trails and then eventually started this newsletter to write more generally about my outdoor adventures in the region.
What is this newsletter?
I write about my hiking (mis)adventures, the trails and parks I explore, and anything else tangentially related to the outdoors! I have a particular fondness for mossy rocks, tamarack bogs, and campsites next to glassy lakes.
Expect a new essay every Sunday and an advice column every other Wednesday. Though the advice column is emailed out to all subscribers, it goes behind the paywall after one week. That means if there’s an advice column that you may want to refer back to in the future, don’t delete the email after reading!
If you like what I write, I hope you’ll stick around and maybe even share a post with a friend!

Why subscribe?
When you subscribe, each new post gets sent directly to your email so you don’t have to remember to check Substack! (If you’re trying to keep a minimalist inbox, you can download the Substack app and change your settings so that new posts are sent there instead of to your email.) Your subscription also tells me that people care about my writing, which then motivates me to keep working on this project!
