But decades ago, it was an unheard-of idea \u2014 until the Hudson Valley pioneered the concept. Some of the early land-conservation work that made it possible for visitors today to explore some of the region\u2019s most fascinating scenic and ecological assets.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scenichudson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/700690463_276150711_319634063395305_6135691734556783047_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34752\" width=\"840\" height=\"840\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Photo: @sneaker_mutt)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief among these efforts, perhaps, was FDR&#8217;s work to conserve trees. The late president cultivated a passion for forestry so deep that he often noted his profession as \u201ctree farmer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roosevelt planted more than 500,000 trees as part of his experiments in scientific forestry management. \u201cFDR thought of the land as a resource, something to be used and managed in a responsible manner,\u201d explains an informative National Park Service&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/elro\/blogs\/franklin-d-roosevelt-tree-farmer.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">account<\/a>.&nbsp;\u201cHe treated the trees on his wood lots as a crop, not as a landscape.&nbsp;He was concerned about the productivity of the land and how to keep it that way, to make it sustainable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scenichudson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/62-53.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34757\" width=\"841\" height=\"1053\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt on the south lawn at Hyde Park, 1933. (Photo: Public Domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FDR\u2019s tree plantation provided lumber for railroad ties and light poles. During World War II, it furnished timber to build Navy patrol boats and Christmas trees sent to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Receiving news about the forest\u2019s bounty provided a tonic for the president as he guided the nation through the Great Depression and war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And whenever FDR returned to Hyde Park, he spent hours driving through his forest on roads branching off from today\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scenichudson.org\/explore-the-valley\/scenic-hudson-parks\/roosevelt-farm-lane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roosevelt Farm Lane Trail<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FDR&#8217;s neighbor Archibald Rogers, a railroad magnate, helped stoke the younger man&#8217;s interest in forestry. Rogers devoted much of his life to developing a tree plantation on his Hyde Park estate. By the 1890s, he \u201cnot only harvested trees for timber, but built sustainable woods roads, planted young trees, and selectively thinned them as they grew,\u201d according to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/m.asp?m=210666\">account<\/a>&nbsp;by the Winnakee Land Trust. The group has protected a portion of the plantation and created&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winnakee.org\/visit-our-parks-preserves\/winnakee-nature-preserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Winnakee Nature Preserve<\/a>&nbsp;to make it publicly accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scenichudson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/09-2597M.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34755\" width=\"841\" height=\"581\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">FDR with friend Livingston Davis (left) surveys tree damage in March 1913, after the &#8220;big wind that blew down one half of the trees on the avenue&#8221; in Hyde Park. (Photo: Public Domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FDR couldn\u2019t have found a better place to learn the ropes, and Rogers was a willing mentor. The two&nbsp;spent considerable time together in Rogers\u2019 woodlands. Inside Hyde Park\u2019s post office, a 1941 mural illustrating the town\u2019s history depicts the two side by side, chopping dead trees in preparation for planting new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ongoing effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Great Depression, FDR established a &#8220;tree army&#8221; inspired by his forestry work. Through it, Civilian Conservation Corps workers planted a \u201cGreat Wall of Trees\u201d stretching across the Great Plains from Texas to North Dakota. This shelterbelt proved critical for confronting conditions that had turned the region\u2019s depleted agricultural soils into the Dust Bowl.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, researchers are considering reviving the shelterbelt, much of which has disappeared, as a way of helping farms adapt to increasingly harmful climate impacts, while sustaining or even growing productivity. The trees would lower temperatures, protect crops from wind and rainstorms, and capture run-off that otherwise could flood fields. In addition, they would sequester carbon, providing a natural climate solution, and furnish habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scenichudson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/scenichudson_20507761_Full.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34753\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Photo: Lauren Beale)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An idea that could help save the planet took root in the woods of Hyde Park. Scenic Hudson protected 335 acres across Route 9 from the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in 2004. Some of the trees planted by friends Archibald Rogers and Franklin Roosevelt still shade the land today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reed Sparling is a staff writer and historian at Scenic Hudson.
