About us

Bread Alone is a family-owned, values-driven bakery. We have been baking organic breads following traditional methods since our first loaf in 1983, and we continue to do so today. We strive to create simple, honest breads and foods that we believe speak to the best in us. You can find our organic breads at grocery stores in the tri-state area, at farmers' markets in and around NYC, and at our 3 Hudson Valley cafes in Boiceville, Rhinebeck, and Woodstock.

  • Behind every product we make is a team that takes food safety seriously, and last month, that showed. Our production team successfully passed our 2026 Safe Quality Food audit with flying colors, and we couldn’t be prouder of the people who made it happen. In our line of work, food safety is the foundation everything else is built on. SQF certification matters because it confirms what we practice every day: that the people we feed can trust what we make. But no certification happens on its own. It’s earned by a culture where every team member, on every shift, understands that their role matters and acts on it. That culture was on full display. From the production floor to sanitation, maintenance, distribution, and our FSQ team, people stepped up and showed what it looks like when food safety is a core shared responsibility. An audit is a snapshot, but culture is what we practice when no one is watching. Thank you to every team member who makes that standard real, day in and day out!

  • Now in its third year, our partnership with Community Food Works is one of the ways we try to give back to the community that's supported us for over 40 years. As a Hudson Valley business, contributing to the health of our neighbors matters to us — and one of the most direct ways we can do that is by helping put fresh, nutritious bread on the lunch trays of local students. Working alongside Community Food Works, we bake whole grain loaves that start as wheat grown on local farms. Our bakery team turns that wheat into hundreds of loaves that make their way into school cafeterias across Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Albany, and Columbia counties. We believe kids should know where their food comes from. It builds an appreciation for local food systems and nutrition that lasts well beyond the lunch line. We're proud to be part of nourishing the next generation, one loaf at a time.

  • "Sourdough For All!" isn't just a tagline — it's been one of Bread Alone's guiding purposes for over 40 years, and it captures the heart of what we do: make whole, nutritious, honestly-made bread accessible to everyone. In that spirit, we're proud to announce a $10,000 donation to Whole Foods Market Foundation, supporting their work to advance food security, improve nutrition, and strengthen resilient food systems. You can be part of it too: from September 2–22, every Bread Alone purchase at Whole Foods Market helps contribute to the cause. Thank you for putting your dollars behind bread that gives back!

  • Progress on our Lake Katrine bakery expansion is moving right along – the extension’s steel is up, giving real shape to what has, until now, mostly existed on paper. Since breaking ground on our 15,000-square-foot expansion, we've completed most of the site work, foundations are in, and the building's frame is now up. Next, our construction team will tackle walls and roof through the end of summer. By fall, we’ll move to the interior spaces where we will cool, slice, and ship our sourdough breads for decades to come. We remain on schedule to complete construction by December 2026, with plans to put the new space to work early in the new year. This expansion will grow our long fermentation sourdough production by 50%, giving us the space to keep baking real sourdough, no shortcuts, for decades to come. More updates to come as the building continues to come together!

  • WE'RE HEADED TO Specialty Food Association FANCY FOOD SHOW NEXT WEEK! 🥳 If you are, too, we hope you'll check out the 'Taste Of New York' Giveaway we're participating in with Partners Coffee and four other New York-based CPG brands. See you soon at the Javits Center!

Headed to Specialty Food Association's Fancy Food Show? We've got a $600 giveaway lined up in collaboration with some of NYC's best CPG brands. 👏 The rules are simple: visit all six participating vendors and grab the name of someone at each booth (pro tip: snag a business card to make it easier to remember). Once you've got all six, scan the QR code at any of the partnered booths and submit the form with your answers. One lucky winner takes home $600 in gift cards; $100 to each of the six brands. Here are the six brands: Bread Alone Bakery: Since 1983, our breads have been made with water, salt, and organic wheat, transformed through the unhurried magic of fermentation. In a world that moves fast, we proudly go slow. It’s one of the reasons people say they feel better when they eat our bread. 🍞 Cheeky Cocktails: Cheeky is a line of non-alcoholic, premium syrups and juices for the home and bar. Our products are shelf-stable for up to two years. We never add artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. 🍸 DONA: Founded in 2014, Dona is a female-founded, independently-owned tea company based in Brooklyn, NY. We equitably source all of our teas, herbs & spices. Our products are balanced, complex, naturally sweet — never compromised by filler ingredients. 🍵 Seed + Mill: Seed + Mill was started by three friends in New York's bustling Chelsea Market, selling premium tahini, tahini soft-serve, halva, and other vegan sweets all made from sesame seeds.🍦 FINE & RAW: Fine & Raw is a Brooklyn chocolate company that makes chocolate the way it probably should've been made all along: small batches, absurdly few ingredients, a factory on Scott Ave that smells like a good decision. 🍫 Partners Coffee: Partners Coffee, founded in 2012, is an independently owned, small-batch coffee roaster headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. As roasters and baristas, we believe that each coffee can tell a story, and we strive to share that in every cup. ☕ --- Thanks to Raina Roberts for riffing on this idea with me one random Friday in May, and to Miranda Plourde for organizing the partnership + Claire Frost & Andrew B. for visuals. 💙 And I'm extraordinarily grateful to every participant bringing this inaugural "Taste of New York Giveaway" to life at #SFF2026. See you in a few days! #SummerFancyFoodShow #SpecialtyFoodAssociation

  • Investing in Our Food Safety Culture! At Bread Alone, our commitment to food safety is not just a policy—it’s a core pillar of our identity. As a certified SQF (Safe Quality Food) bakery, we are dedicated to upholding the highest standards, and this commitment is baked into the very fabric of our food safety culture. This culture is reflected in every loaf we bake at our Lake Katrine facility. This past week, we hosted our annual Food Safety Training in our Lake Katrine Facility. From interactive demos to hearing directly from our own employees, it truly was a week of interactive learning and team building. The training was designed to empower every single employee to be an active part of our culture of excellence. By learning together and growing together, we are ensuring that our dedication to high-quality, safe food is part of our daily work. We believe that baking real, honest food requires a true commitment to our community. This renewed investment in our people is a testament to that promise, ensuring that every product you enjoy is made with the highest level of care and integrity.
