Before I get to the fun stuff, there’s a bit of housekeeping I need to share.

I’m moving to a new newsletter provider. Again.

This provider has had some deliverability issues, it doesn’t sync with my website at all, and the unsubscribe process isn’t as straightforward as I’d like it to be.

Making a move like this is hugely complicated, and there are a couple of issues that may affect you.

• A small segment of you might get extra emails for the next 1-2 weeks as the transition happens.

• A larger segment of you might get no emails at all from the new provider until you tell your spam filters that you’re ok with the new sender. It all depends on your individual spam filter settings.

So if you get an extra email or two - no worries. It’s temporary and will only happen for a couple of weeks.

If you suddenly stop getting emails, please check your spam folder or (if you use Gmail) your promotions tab. If you find a message in spam, marking it “not spam” should unblock future sends. And if you find it in your promotions tab, just drag it to your main inbox and that’s where future sends should go.

Hopefully the transition will be smooth sailing. I just wanted to give you a heads-up about potential hiccups.

Now onto the fun stuff!

Ever since Tanita Davis recommended the Paladin books by T. Kingfisher (in a comment on this post about books that defy categorization) I’ve been just a tiny bit obsessed. I’ve been dipping into Kingfisher’s backlist (which is as hard to categorize as any of her individual books) and enjoying all of them. Then I found out she’d be at Rose City Comic Con here in Portland, so I walked down to Powells and bought everything they had on hand, with plans to read them all before the con. Well, life got in the way, but I’ve been making up for it in the weeks since the convention.

Here are some of my favorites. 🥰

1. Paladin’s Grace - This is my favorite book so far in the Saints of Steel series about Paladins - and it’s also the first. Don’t get me wrong - I love them all! But I especially loved all the perfume lore in this one, and the very fun mix of romance, fantasy and mystery. There are a LOT of severed heads, but also lots of kissing, knitting, and dry humor. 2. A House with Good Bones - This is one of her set-in-a-totally-normal-place-but-there-is-something-very-creepy-going-on books, much like The Twisted Ones which I wrote about here. A House with Good Bones (LOVE a good real estate pun) has a house painted in shades of ecru (creeeeepy!), possibly-evil roses, guardian vultures, and a jar full of teeth buried in the garden. 3. What Moves the Dead - This one is a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher - with horrifying fungus and weird reanimated rabbits. And there’s a sequel! (Bookshop link, Amazon link)

4. Clockwork Boys - Set in the same world as Paladin’s Grace, but with Suicide Squad vibes. Also - carnivorous tattoos. 😳 (Bookshop link, Amazon link)

5. A Sorceress Comes to Call - My new favorite! This one is billed as a retelling of The Goose Girl, but it’s nothing like The Goose Girl at all. Yes, there are geese, but only at the end. And there is a horse called Falada, but I should put air quotes around “horse” because he’s not really, and we don’t get his talking head calling out the villain, but we do get his reanimated corpse (everything but the head) terrorizing all the characters. And did I mention that it’s got Regency romance settings and vibes? Hoo boy! Her books really are impossible to categorize. (Bookshop link, Amazon link)

She writes fantasy that’s not a cliché, horror that’s not gross, humor that’s not silly. I’ve enjoyed every single one of her books so far! Time for your suggestions. If you’re a Kingfisher fan, which one of her books do I need to move to the top of my pile? And any other genre-defying author or book suggestions?

I’ve got bad news and good news.

The bad news is that my sewing machine seized up and I will be without it for FOUR WEEKS!

😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭

The good news is that there’s a new pattern today - and I’m in the middle of updating several more embroidery patterns, and those don’t need a machine. Perfect timing!

Here’s the new applique pattern.

It’s actually two half-block patterns!

I ADORE half-block patterns because I really love the look you get when you break up a standard grid.

Here’s an example I mocked up showing the corn and carrots (and also a bunch of animal sounds made with the free ABC applique pattern) added to the critters in the Farm Bundle.

Back when I had a garden, I grew corn one year. EVERY time I had an ear that looked just about ready to pick, the local raccoons would come in and grab it before I did. Little bandits. 🦝

I love the shine of plastic craft eyes - I think it gives stuffed animals a very life-like glint. But craft eyes aren’t baby safe, even though they’re called safety eyes. If you’re crocheting a stuffed animal for a baby, this post will tell you how to crochet the eyes and attach them.

I turned those cardinals (and a bunch of other beloved birds) into a set of easy cut & sew Christmas ornaments.

I added an alternate grid with half-blocks to my collection of layout guides. In a nutshell – I did all the math for you! Get fabric requirements, cutting guides, and layout templates for six different sizes, from Itty Bitty Baby to King size. You can use this layout with any of my quilt patterns.

I released a new rhinoceros applique pattern last week. The old rhino had no smile, no eyelashes and (the biggest problem of all) just one horn.

I volunteer at the Oregon Zoo and the rhinos are part of my territory, so I’ve learned a LOT more about them since I designed that early pattern several years ago. 🥰

Here are some of my favorite rhino facts.

1. There are five species of rhinos still living in the world. Both African species (white and black rhinos) have two horns, so including a one-horned rhino in a quilt of African animals was a big oops. 😬 The other three species live in Asia. Indian and Javan rhinos have just one horn. Sumatran rhinos have two, just like their African cousins.

2. We call African rhinos white rhinos and black rhinos, but the names have nothing to do with their color. White rhinos have a wide, flat upper lip. We call them “white” because the Dutch word for wide (referring to their lips) sounds like white. 🙄 Black rhinos have kind of a pointy upper lip that they can actually use to grab things - like a tiny little trunk. We call them black because. . . ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Really we should call them wide and pointy rhinos. This site has really excellent photos of their upper lips, if you want to see what I’m talking about.

3. Rhino horns are made of keratin - the same stuff that makes up our hair and nails. Pieces will occasionally chip off (just like us breaking a nail) but it doesn’t bother them and it will grow back.

4. There used to be a very hairy rhino species called a wooly rhino (if you’ve read Clan of the Cave Bear you’re familiar with this guy) but today most rhinos only have a tiny bit of hair on the tips of their ears and the tip of their tail. The exception is the Sumatran rhino, which still has a full coat of hair. It’s not as dense and shaggy as the wooly rhino (see some paintings here) but it’s definitely hairier than the others.

5. Rhinos are FAST. Most of the time they’re just standing around eating (they’re herbivores, so they spend most of their day grazing) but when they move, they MOVE. I’ve seen the baby rhino at the zoo doing zoomies around his habitat with his mom, and they are fast and much more nimble than you’d expect from such a solid-looking critter. It’s fun to see them really move!

Back in April I announced that my daughter is my new partner here at Shiny Happy World.

So far she’s been doing a ton of behind the scenes work formatting covers and helping me update things, but she’s also very interested in updating our embroidery patterns - and adding new ones!

Today one of the first updates is ready.

What does “improved” mean?

Well, in this case it means instead of 12 flowers, there are 42!

I also cleaned up and smoothed out the drawings, created a new color guide, added three suggested color palettes, and linked to a LOT more embroidery tutorials.

Tomatoes are one of my favorite things, and I eat them all year long. But in the summer I go a little crazy and eat tomatoes nonstop. Of course I add them to sandwiches and salads and eat them plain. But I also have a bunch of favorite dishes where the tomatoes are the absolute highlight.

Here are five of my favorite tomato recipes. . .

1. Tomato Chutney from Alyssa Rivers - Sweet and spicy and savory and absolutely delicious on sandwiches or with cheese and crackers. Also just eaten with a spoon. 🥰

2. Tomato Cobbler - I have no idea where I got this recipe, but I’ve been making it for years and it’s delicious. The recipe says grape tomatoes, but I actually use a mix of whatever tomatoes look good in the moment. I don’t bother peeling or seeding them - I just chop them up and dump them in the pan. The recipe also says the gruyere is optional, but I never skip it. Sometimes I even work some grated gruyere into the biscuit dough. Yum!

3. Roasted Tomatoes with White Beans from Smitten Kitchen - The title almost says it all. It doesn’t mention the good quality olive oil, some garlic, and pretty slivers of basil, but with them you have a perfect summer dish. I like to spoon it over toast, and I love buttered corn on the cob with it.

4. Summer Quinoa Salad Jars with Lemon Dill Dressing from Pinch of Yum - Tomatoes aren’t technically the star of this recipe, but I’m including it here because they’re so important. I don’t layer all the ingredients equally - I put the tomatoes and dressing at the bottom of the jar because I LOVE how well they marry together as it sits in the fridge. Cucumbers go on top of that, then the quinoa and finally some feta cheese. Delicious!

5. Burst Tomato Galette with Corn and Zucchini - another from Smitten Kitchen. I use my favorite pie crust method (minus the sugar) instead of the one included in the recipe.

I’ve got a brand new pattern for you today.

Meet Rowan Rhino!

The black rhinos are in my “territory” at the zoo, and they’re one of my favorite animals! (Maybe I’ll do fun rhino facts in a Five Happy Things email one Wednesday this month.)

I included a rhino in my old Safari pattern, but I was never entirely happy with his design. For starters - I only gave him one horn, but all African rhinos actually have two horns! That’s exactly the kind of detail kids notice, so I absolutely had to fix it with the new pattern.

But doing just two horns wasn’t right either. I didn’t want to leave out Indian and Javan rhinos! So I designed the new pattern in a way that allows you to make it with one or two horns - whichever you like best. Here’s a sample with just one horn.

You can add this guy to the Safari Bundle #1. And - yes - there will be a Safari Bundle #2 that includes this pattern, but I have a few more blocks I need to do before that bundle is ready. I’m hoping to get it done by the end of the year, but the end of the year is approaching at an alarming rate!

Look at the gorgeous embroidery Lisa added to a denim jacket!

First of all, let me say that my very favorite thing to embroider is denim. I just love the texture of denim fabric as a base for hand embroidery!

Second, she used one of my very favorite embroidery patterns. Continuous Stitching is a seamlessly repeating field of flowers, so you can use it to fill an area of any size and shape. (I used it here, and here, and here. And I used the circle grid that comes with the pattern to make this sun mandala.) All that colorful, dense stitching makes me so happy!

The archives are almost all free - but sometimes I released a new pattern in the shop during that week in history. Those patterns are all on sale this week!

Shiny Happy World has been around for a LOT of years now. That’s a lot of photos - possibly too many for your email provider to handle. If they chop off the end of the post, look for a link at the bottom where it will say something like “View Entire Message.” Depending on your email provider, it might just be a cryptic set of three dots. Halloween is right around the corner! In this post I list a bunch of my favorite commercial patterns (with their pattern umbers) for making costumes.

2012

If you’re making scarves or blankets, you usually only crochet into the top of your foundation chain. But if you turn it over and stitch into the bottom as well, you can make ovals, leaves, snowflakes, and lots of other interesting shapes!

2013

You get the pattern for the big, huggable elephant and the tiny, pocket-sized mouse.

2014

A free pattern for a pirate wanted poster! It includes an alphabet so you can customize the pirate’s name - and it also includes an image of a girl pirate! I named mine Hurricane Hattie. 🥰

2015

One of my very favorite quilt patterns! It includes the basic doll body, plus lots of different hairstyles and outfits for you to mix and match. This is a great one for using scraps of your favorite fabrics and fussy cutting your favorite bits! Have a used the word “favorite” enough times? 😂

Another year, another mix & match pattern! This time it’s houses, and they’re so much fun to make! I’ve made brightly-colored fantasy houses, realistic-looking houses, gingerbread houses, haunted houses - what will you make?

The original cuddle fleece I like to use for quilt backs and stuffed animals was discontinued, but I found an excellent substitute. I think it’s made by the same manufacturer.

I just adore this version of the Mix & Match Monsters quilt that Camilla made. That bold stripe with Liam’s name is just ***chef’s kiss***.

A sweet raccoon face! This is a collection of printables that you can use for so many things!

2023

Another set of printables - but this one is a little different. You get the main image in multiple sizes, a black and white line drawing, an embroidery pattern with color guide, and the cat, mouse and flower all as individual clip art images with no backgrounds so you can play with them individually.

I just love the exceedingly pleased expression on this cat’s face. 🥰
