Nicholas from the Unusual Whales team, here! Today, we’re going to cover the Unusual Whales ETF Overview, and why the information found there can be quite useful in your trading and investment research.

The Unusual Whales ETF Overview is a hub of information available for all exchange-traded funds. There are numerous data points and charts on this overview, so we’ll go over each one in turn.

The first chart displays the viewed ETF’s price chart, and you can choose between numerous time frames: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, Year to Date (YTD), 1 year, 5 year, and MAX (which dates back to 2015). Another feature of this chart is the ability to view the implied move for several of these time frames.

Remember, the implied move of a stock represents how much the price is expected to move over a period of time. Unless otherwise specified the time period is generally until the end of the current week.

To the right of the price and implied move chart is the heat map of the viewed ETF, also with various time frames from Current Day (Today), Yesterday, 1 week, month, YTD, and 1 year.

The heatmap is divided into sectors, with each stock is nestled within the box of its respective sector. Like all heatmaps on the Unusual Whales platform, this chart is interactive. If you want a better view of, for example, Consumer Cyclical; all you have to do is click on that category box like this:

Below that are three different breakdowns: The ETF financials overview, the top 10 holdings by weight that outlines what percentages of the ETF are allocated to each stock, and the sectors weight chart, which does the same for each sector.

Like all ticker displays on the platform, you can also navigate to individual stock pages within the Top Holdings by Weight chart by clicking on the ticker.

At the very bottom of the ETF Overview Page is a chart that displays in and outflows for the ETF. Each candle displays the buying versus selling for the ETF, and you can hover your mouse over each bar for information from a given day. The chart can be adjusted to view current year, as well as past years, and you can also switch the view to see cumulative in and outflows rather than the daily flows.

That about sums up the ETF Overview, but here at the end, I just wanted to include a general text-only guide to core features on Unusual Whales.   Explore real-time shared flow from the Discord server and discover user-submitted filters for our flow feeds. Connect with other subscribers through our members-only chatroom.

3. How can I keep track of the options (or stocks) that I’m tracking?

• Contract Look-up
  Click on the ⊕ icon on any contract in the flow feed to view it in Contract Look-up. Search for any options contract and access detailed historical data and analysis.

• Options Watchlist
  View and organize the contracts you’ve searched. Our watchlist tracks the gain or loss of your contracts.

• Custom Alerts
  Set up alerts based on a range of conditions—including options activity, insider trades, and congressional trades—so you never miss a move.

4. I want to trade based on gamma exposure and greeks

• Periscope
  The Periscope SPX Market Maker Exposure page offers a clear, strike-by-strike view of net gamma exposure, revealing how Market Makers are positioned—and, by extension, how customers are leaning in SPX.

• Gamma Exposure for Stocks
  View gamma exposure for tickers—both raw and directionalized—to help you understand market makers’ positioning and potential price movements.

5. I want to research & copy the trades of prominent investors, institutions & politicians

• Institutions
  Get detailed insights into the holdings & performance of hedge funds and various types of institutional investors

• Politics
  See a feed of all trades by US House and Senate members, as well as our annual Congressional Trading Reports

• Portfolios
  View the current holdings and trade history of specific investors, including members of congress

6. Where can I research into particular stocks?

Hey everyone, in today’s article, we’re going to revisit and walk through how to set up and use the Unusual Whales Super Flow Dashboard; something I personally can’t trade without.

Some of you may remember the article about my Scalper’s dashboard using Super Flow, which I use to scalp futures and $SPY. You can read about that setup in this article, but for today, we’re going to keep it pretty basic.

Market Tide Super Flow

Super Flow lets you create up to nine separate saved dashboards. For this walkthrough, we’ll build out a market tide dashboard first, then set up a second dashboard for flow feed filters and alerts.

To start, click “Add New Window” at the top of the dashboard. From there, you’ll choose which type of window you want to add. Super Flow is pretty flexible. You can add stock charts, options flow feeds, dark flow, hot chains, market tide, net flow, and more.

Since I like to watch both the full options premium tide and the out-of-the-money-only tide, I’m keeping both versions visible on the same window tab. The full market tide includes all strikes, including at the money, in the money, and out of the money. The out-of-the-money-only version narrows that down to just OTM contracts. I’ve also added the SPY stock chart for a more granular view at price action than the Market Tide view can provide.

Next, I’m throwing in a 0DTE ETF-only Tide view, that specifically tracks ETF zero day and weekly day expiration net premiums. I’ve also selected “All moneyness” to include all ITM, OTM, and ATM transactions.

That gives us a simple first dashboard built around market tide and SPY activity. You’ll notice the organization of each window is different between images; we’ll get to that in the next section.

Flow Feed Super Flow

Adding flow feeds and flow alerts takes one extra step because Super Flow needs the URL of the filter you want to bring in. Start by adding a flow table window. When it asks for a URL, go to the actual Flow Feed page and open the saved filter you want to use. Then copy the URL from that filtered page and paste it into the Super Flow window.

For the first flow feed window, we’ll use a written puts filter. This tab is named “10K Plus Put Writes” because it pulls in a filter for larger written put orders. Once that URL is added, the filtered flow feed appears directly inside the Super Flow dashboard.

I’m a big fan of using Interval Flow as well, which applies filters to a specific time frame. In this example, we’ll use my Opening ASK side Interval Flow filter that captures flow with >70% of transactions occurring at or near the ask price. Same process: copy the URL from that filtered Interval Flow page, paste it into the new Super Flow window, and name the tab “Opening ASK Interval.”

You can also add flow alerts the same way. Add a flow alerts table, go to the Flow Alerts page, open the alert filter you want to track, copy that URL, and paste it into Super Flow. Once added, the alerts window appears alongside the flow feed filters.

At this point, we have two useful dashboards: one for market tide and SPY activity, and another for specific flow filters and alerts.

Once you have a few windows on the dashboard, you can rearrange them however you want. If the layout starts getting messy, click “Auto Arrange” and Super Flow will clean it up for you. You can also click and drag each window manually if you want more control over the layout.

That’s the basic setup. Super Flow gives you a way to keep market tide, flow feed filters, flow alerts, ETF activity, and charts all in one place without constantly bouncing between pages.

Once your dashboards are set up, you can tab between them whenever you need to monitor your flow, market tides, saved filters, and alerts all from one place!

Today, we’re looking at something a little different, but no less unusual. As many of you may know, Unusual Whales began with a mission to track unusual stock and options trades made by politicians, especially those with access to information not available to the public. Indeed, in the numerous Unusual Whales Congressional Trading reports, we’ve found that many politicians from both parties not only trade stocks, but they trade stocks underneath their direct purview by way of committees and conflicts of interest.

New financial disclosures released on May 14 show that Donald Trump made more than 3,500 stock transactions tied to U.S. corporate securities during the first quarter, with some individual purchases disclosed in buckets as large as $5 million. Alone, reported transactions by a politician (yes, even the late ones) aren’t necessarily unusual per se, but the timing and context in this instance surely stand out, as does the sheer number of transactions made: as many as 3,642 trades is well above average for a US politician.

A lot of that buying came during the market-wide pullback in March, when the Iran war and broader Middle East tensions were hammering market sentiment, lifting oil, and dragging equities lower in what became the worst month, and the S&P 500’s worst quarter, since 2022.

Trump made millions of dollars in equity purchases while policy direction was still known only to himself (and a very small group of people). Some of the winners from these purchases are just plain insane, too. $INTC was one of the biggest standouts: Trump’s average buy price per the disclosure was $46.23, and the current price sits around $115.23, good for a gain of +149.24%.

$PENG sits high on that list as well, rising from an average buy of $19.20 to $47.21 for a gain of +145.89%. $SNDK went from $599.41 to $1,408.55, up +134.99%, and $MRVL took a nice ski lift ride up and to the right from $79.92 to $183.10, a gain of +129.10%.

And then there was Dell. On May 8, at a White House event as a “Day in Celebration of Victory Day for World War II”, he told people to “go out and buy a Dell.” While the recommendation came as a sort of response to Michael and Susan Dells’ $6.25 billion pledge to fund “Trump accounts”, this stock trading disclosure revealed that the President already held a sizable stake in $DELL shares at the time of his comment.

Trump disclosed multiple $DELL purchases beginning on February 10, with the disclosed dollar value eventually reaching into the millions. After his $DELL comments on May 8th, the stock soared over 12% intraday, hitting an all-time-high of $263.99 per share.

Funny enough, if you look back to the Notable Gainers graphic above, $DELL is also the biggest winner in terms of monetary profit, with an average buy price of $147.88 versus a current price of $247.73. That comes out to a gain of +67.52%, and roughly $3.45 million in profit using the maximum disclosed capital invested from the reported range of $1,000,000 to $5,000,000.

The timing of these transactions, and the power and knowledge he had while making them, definitely brings back memories of the Unusual Whales political trading reports as a whole.

Regardless of party affiliation, numerous Representatives and Senators invest and trade quite a bit.

Today, I’m going to go over the Unusual Whales 0DTE feature. We’ll break down each aspect, as well as definitions, to help you get an idea of how to navigate and utilize 0DTE positioning in the markets.

0DTE Feature Explained

The Unusual Whales 0DTE feature offers a collection of 0 days til expiration (expiring “today”) for all Equities, ETFs, Indices, and all of them combined. These are all separated into their own individual, respective charts. Each chart visualizes the Net Premium and Net Volume for all 0 DTE (zero days to expiration) and weekly options, displayed alongside the SPY price for easy comparison.

You can filter the data by moneyness (In the Money, At the Money, Out of the Money), option type (Equities, Index, ETF), and expiration type (Weekly or 0 DTE).

When a single combination of moneyness and security type is selected, the chart displays both net call premium and net put premium as separate lines. If multiple combinations are selected, these values are merged into a single net premium line.

Changes in net premium or net volume can help interpret market sentiment, and you can get a full breakdown of net premium in this article:

• Rising values in net call premium, or falling values in net put premium, may reflect bullish behavior.

• Falling values in net call premium, or rising values in net put premium, may signal bearish sentiment.

• It is important to note that these assumptions are NOT clear indications of bearish or bullish movement, however. See this video here for a breakdown of some important nuances to net premiums

Equity Chart

The Equity chart tracks exactly that; all optionable equities (such as Amazon $AMZN, Apple $AAPL, and Google $GOOGL). One thing to note about equities is the lack of daily expirations. Unlike SPY, QQQ, and indices like SPX, equities only have weekly expirations; meaning contract expiration dates fall only on the last trading day of each week. For these, you will see only the “Weekly” expiration volume and values. In some cases (such as the MAG 7 like $AAPL, $NVDA, etc.), equities have expirations on Monday, Wednesday, as well as the Friday weekly; those will display as available.

Here, we see the Equity chart set to ALL moneyness, as well as OTM/ATM toggled on to compare, and the Weekly expiration. Across the board, in this example, options positioning is more bullish than bearish; in line with the $SPY underlying price for the day.

ETF Chart

The ETF chart does the same for all optionable ETFs (such as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust $SPY or the Invesco QQQ Trust $QQQ). The ETFs $SPY, $IWM, and $QQQ do indeed have “same day expirations” numerous days per week, and by default will display 0DTE and weekly expiration data, which you can toggle to your liking with the Expirations dropdown.

Other ETFs such as the Vanguard 500 Index Fund $VOO or sector ETFs such as CONSUMER DISCRETIONARY SELECT SECTOR SPDR FUND $XLY do not have daily expirations in the same manner as SPY and QQQ, so keep that in mind when toggling your settings!

Here, we have the ETF-only chart set to 0DTE only, and both Out of the money only contracts AND “All moneyness” to compare OTM-only to ALL. Across the board in this example, for 0dte contracts, options premiums are firmly bullish, in-line with the underlying $SPY uptrend on the day.

Index Chart

The Indices chart tracks each individual optionable index, such as the S&P 500 index, $SPX S&P Mini, $XSP, and the Nasdaq 100 Index $NDX. These, like the QQQ and SPY ETFs, also have daily expirations, ($SPXW for $SPX, and $NDXP for $NDX) and you can toggle between daily and weekly using the Expirations drop-down box. Other indices, such as the $VIX, $MNX or $SPX and $NDX tickers themselves may only have weekly or monthly expirations.

Here, we see the Index-only chart, set to out of the money only, and the 0 day expiry. Note the positive net call premium and volume, and negative net put premium; 0DTE Index Options Traders in this example are sitting in more bullish than bearish positions.

The Insider Trades feature on Unusual Whales tracks when company insiders buy and sell shares of the company at which they are employed, as soon as trades are reported. Getting there is simple to do. From the main page, first click on “Flow Data”, then select “Insider Trades” under the Stock Data category in the dropdown.

This transports you directly to the Insider Trades page with blank filters. In its raw form, Insider Trades will display all insider transitions of all types, regardless of the insider’s status with a given company. In line with that, the feed will also display all tickers/companies. We’ll start with the OVERVIEW page for Insider Trades.

Insiders Overview

Here we see every ticker on the market. The Insider Trades Overview defaults to order the MAG7 first, and displays the ticker, last trading price, the buy amount and sell amount, as well as the sector and market cap of each ticker. You can narrow down by cap size, time frame (1 month to 12 months), sectors, and even the price and buy/sell percentages.

To see a live feed of individual trades and breakdowns of those trades, we’ll click the TRADES button at the top of the filter settings.

Insider Trades

It’s worth noting that not all insider sales or buys are necessarily driven by a bullish or bearish outlook. Some of these trades may be pre-scheduled under what’s known as a 10b5-1 plan: a rule established by the SEC that allows insiders to sell or buy shares according to a predetermined schedule, even if they’re in possession of material nonpublic information. When viewing insider activity, you’ll often see a “10b5-1” designations next to these trades, signaling that they were part of a previously arranged plan rather than a spontaneous bet or pre-news reactionary buy/sell.

On the TRADES view, we can see individual transactions made by insiders for any given ticker. The filters on this view are more expanded, allowing for ticker and owner filtering, sectors, industries, transaction codes (buy/sell/etc), and the other filters mentioned for OVERVIEW.

To see the specific information about each transaction, you can click the dropdown arrow next to the ticker the transaction was associated with. This will open a dropdown to display the type and scope of the transaction, including the owner and the owner’s Director/10% Owner status. You can even adjust the feed to only display insider transactions on tickers that are saved within one of your Watchlists.

For a breakdown of all insider transactions that have occurred on a ticker, you can click the ticker itself for a full insider breakdown. So to do that, we’ll click the JD link above the dropdown (not within the dropdown).

Here is the Insider Transactions page for JD; we can see a chart of the average price in 1, 3, 6, and 12 month intervals, as well as a table below showing all insider transactions that have been made for the ticker.

Insider Trades Screener

There is also a screener for Insider Trades. You can filter this feed to include only S&P 500 held stocks, filter by your existing Watchlists, market caps, time frame (1 to 12 months), and buy/sell percentages.

Custom Alerts

You can also set up Custom Alerts for insider transactions. From the Custom Alerts page, select Stocks → Insider Trades → Watchlist → Select Watchlist → Name Alert, set premium range and select sliders (in this case, we’ve selected ‘Is Director’, ‘Is Officer’, and ‘Is 10% Owner’). Select “Create Alert”, and you’ll now get Alerts for insider transactions meeting your criteria.

Cluster Insider Alerts

Within the custom alerts, you can also set up your alert to only trigger when a specific series or cluster of events occurs over a set period of time. For example, here we have a cluster setting that will only catch PURCHASE transactions with a minimum of $150,000 in premium. The cluster must include a minimum of 3 insiders who are either directors or 10% owners, and it must have occurred within the last 25 days.

Additionally, if you’ve set up Push Notifications on the Unusual Whales app, you’ll get Push Notifications on your mobile device any time an insider transaction meeting these Alert criteria occurs for companies in your Watchlist!

Today, I’m going to go over the “synthetic long” options strategy. We’ll cover the concepts and risks involved, and use a real-world example caught live on the Unusual Whales trading show, Whale Watch!

First off, let’s cover some general basics here. What exactly is a synthetic long?

A synthetic long position is an options strategy that replicates the risk and reward profile of owning a stock, but without actually buying shares. This is achieved by buying a call option and selling a put option at the same strike price and expiration date.

How a Synthetic Long Works

• Buy a call option (bullish bet) → Gives the right to buy the stock at a set price

• Sell a put option (bullish bet) → Obligates the trader to buy the stock if assigned

Since both options are at the same strike price, the strategy behaves similarly to owning the stock outright. If the stock price rises, the call option gains value. If the stock falls, the short put may be assigned (meaning the trader must buy the stock, just as they would if they had owned it from the start).

Key Benefits & Risks

Advantages:

• Requires less capital upfront than buying shares

• Can be a leveraged way to go long without full stock ownership

• Offers potential tax advantages in certain cases

Disadvantages:

• Obligation to buy the stock if assigned on the short put

• Margin requirements may apply for the short put position

• Can be exposed to time decay and volatility changes

• Risk of Ruin → Since the loss on a Synthetic Long is theoretically very high (but not technically unlimited), this structure carries a high “risk of ruin”.

Now let’s break down this example from the live Unusual Whales trading show. This bad boy came in on $GEV (GE Vernova Inc) way back on February 3rd.

Back on 02/03/2026, the position opened using 739 contracts, buying the $840 calls for 4/17/2026 at $39.80 and selling the $650 puts for 4/17/2026 at $17.30. That left the trade with a net debit of $1,662,750.

By 03/25/2026, that first synthetic long had paid off in a big way. The $840 calls for 4/17/2026 were marked at $111.42, while the short $650 puts for 4/17/2026 had been crushed down to just $1.10. That put the total value of the position at $8,152,648 at the time of the roll. Against the original $1,662,750 debit, that works out to a realized profit of $6,489,898.

Cumulative PnL after the Roll 1: $6,489,898

Rather than fully cashing out and calling it a day, the trade was rolled right into a new $GEV synthetic long at the same time they closed this one. On 03/25/2026, the tape lit up with 577 contracts of the $1000 calls for 5/15/2026 at $47.18 and the $780 puts for 5/15/2026 at $21.36. The new net debit on this bad boy was $1,489,814, which means they already pocketed a good portion of their profit despite opening a brand new position.

That second position didn’t need very long to get cooking either. By 04/22/2026, the $1000 calls for 5/15/2026 were marked at $141.20, while the short $780 puts for 5/15/2026 had faded to just $0.90. That brought the position’s total value up to $8,095,310 at the time of the next roll. Compared to the $1,489,814 entry debit, that second trade generated another realized profit of $6,605,496.

Cumulative PnL after Roll 2: $13,095,394

From there, the trade was rolled once again into a third synthetic long on 04/22/2026. This time, the new position used 460 contracts, buying the $1100 calls for 6/18/2026 at $103.80 and selling the $900 puts for 6/18/2026 at $16.50. Net debit on that new structure came out to $4,015,800.

Today, we’re taking a quick look at a couple of large flows caught by Unusual Whales team member, snorlax_uw. These trades serve as prime examples of how to track your unusual options activity over time, and spot the exits when they hit.

The first contract we’ll cover was a real bonafide slow-burner. Way back in February, snorlax_uw posted sizeable ask-side volume on the $AMZN $250C for 8/21/2026, first with nearly 12,000 contracts (average $8.80 per contract) carrying over from 2/06 to 2/09. Then on Tuesday 2/11, another wave of over 10,000 contracts transacted near the ask at an average fill of $10.68.

Over the next two months, through the volatility and subsequent all time highs in the S&P, the open interest on this contract built into the 30,000s when another position of around 10,000 contracts entered the fray for an average of $9.41. These positions were certainly rewarded for their patience, too. This morning, evidence of an exit hit the tape; over 25,000 contracts transacting near the bid for an average of $20.65 each. That marks a gain of +135% from the original entry, and with such high size and premiums, that’s a substantial gain in total.

Why is this assumed an exit? Because only a select few positions could transact that much volume at once in the form of closures; those HODL’ers from February. Now, the open interest could go up by 20k+ tomorrow, and that would invalidate the presumed exit; but if open interest drops significantly, or barely budges, we’ll have our confirmed exit (barely budging usually means the original position closed, and was handed off to a separate party: both count toward volume, but the latter wouldn’t detract from the open interest).

Our next example isn’t much of a slow burn, but still serves as a good entry for tracking flow over time. Back on April 6th, while $SOFI traded at around $16.10 per share, over 14,000 contracts of the $19C 5/15/2026 hit the tape at the ask, for an average fill of $0.46; with about 10,000 contracts carrying over into open interest.

Today (April 16th), $SOFI traded over $3 higher, above $19 per share. While there has been some decent volume today, it’s not crystal clear whether or not this position closed. What is certain, though, is that the contract is firmly in profit. From their original entry of $0.46, the $SOFI $19C 5/15/2026 traded as high as $1.96 per contract. In just ten days, (8 trading sessions), this position bloomed to a max gain of 326%. Not bad, not bad.

We won’t have a better idea of profit taking until we see the open interest update on 4/17, but either way, that’s one hell of a trade!

Both this $SOFI trade and the slow-burn ‘n churn $AMZN position show how useful it can be to pay close attention to your saved flow. You can create watchlists and even set up alerts for sizeable transactions on individual contracts via the Custom Alerts settings!

Today, we’ve got not one, but several more examples of suspicious options activity right before major geopolitical news that dramatically moved the markets… in both directions. We even caught a couple of these live on the Unusual Whales trading show WhaleWatch.

The first unusual flow we’re looking at hit the tape on April 7th right at the bell heading into market close. Over 10,000 contracts of the $SPY $676 call for 4/10/2026 transacted in a flurry, for an average fill price across the full position of $0.96 per contract. At the time, $SPY was trading just below $660 per share. This was fairly unusual, because ceasefire talks with Iran had not been going well up to this point, and that 2% move in $SPY seemed increasingly unlikely. As we all now know, Trump announced a two week pause to Iran strikes that very night.

The next morning, the entire position closed near market open, with $SPY trading at $675.70 per share. Overnight, this trader rode these contracts from their average entry of $0.96 to an exit price of $4.16; a +333% gain. Think that one was a “guess” that we’d gap up overnight? Hmm…

The next bit of flow takes a bit of an opposite tack. As a preface here, generally speaking (though not a 100% accuracy concept), oil and equities tend to have a little bit of an inverse relationship. Those scalpers of you out there have probably watched /CL while trading the Nasdaq or S&P futures for context, even.

On April 8th, following the overnight gap up, $DOW (Dow Inc., not to be confused with “the Dow”), was sitting on a daily drop of over 10% when these hit the tape.

Nearly 5,000 contracts of the $DOW $37.5 C expiring 5/15/2026 hit the tape, and we caught it live on the Unusual Whales Live Trading show, WhaleWatch. Like I said, $DOW was already down 10% on the day when we spotted these, and while $DOW isn’t directly an oil company, it is heavily tied to hydrocarbons and energy as a whole as feedstocks. At the time, this seemed a bit unusual given the narrative around energy following Trump’s announcement. Well, less than a day after Trump’s two-week ceasefire announcement, those talks quickly grew contentious again with Israel’s continued strikes on Lebanon, and Iran becoming less willing to engage in negotiations.

$DOW rebounded pretty much right after these contracts hit the tape. By market close on April 8th, these contracts had already spiked to a new intraday high of $3.60, marking an intraday gain for this trader of 60% from their entry price of $2.26. Then, this morning on April 9th, nearly identical size hit the tape at the bid price, signaling that this trader likely exited their trade. From that $2.26, the trader (likely) closed their position at $4.10 per contract, for an overall gain of 81.41%.

The timing of both of these trades was just too clean to be coincidence. Out of the money $SPY calls literally right before a major announcement about the Iran war that hinted at re-opening of the Hormuz straight, followed by $DOW flow right before a near-reversal of that sentiment? That $DOW trader basically bottom-ticked the move and caught the full rebound! And these are just two examples of several that hit:

Time and time again, we catch these nearly outlandish trades, and time and time again their suspicious nature is revealed mere hours or days later, printing millions upon millions of gains for those who placed them.

I can’t say for sure whether or not these folks knew exactly what was gonna happen before it happened, but…. Yeah.

Unusual, to say the least.

Nicholas from the Unusual Whales team, here! Today, we’re going to talk about the market reaction to Trump’s address on Iran last night. We’re also going to focus on some suspicious options flow in oil names discussed on the Unusual Whales trading show WhaleWatch yesterday morning. Did someone know what Trump would say?

Last night the market got the exact opposite of what it had spent the previous session hoping for.

Going into Trump’s address on Iran, there was at least some belief that he might offer a real off-ramp, or at least some kind of clarity to the timeline to wind this whole Iran war situation down a bit. Instead, Trump stated that the U.S. would hit Iran “extremely hard” over the next two to three weeks, while offering no real clarity on when the Strait of Hormuz might reopen. That was all crude needed to hear.

The result was immediate. Brent instantly jumped 7.9% to $109.12, while WTI absolutely ripped 12.5% to $112.60, putting U.S. crude on pace for its biggest absolute one-day price increase since 2020. /CL futures tapped a high of $113.97 before any meaningful pullback at all.

Equity futures took that about as well as you’d expect. Overnight, U.S. stock futures pointed to a nasty open, with S&P 500 futures down about 1.7% and Nasdaq futures down about 2.2% as traders backed away from risk and repriced the inflation mess that comes with oil doing its best impression of the Superman takeoff shot.

Traders didn’t necessarily react to the fact that Trump spoke, rather this seems more a reaction to what he didn’t offer: a clear path toward ceasefire. There was no diplomatic language worth latching onto, and no serious roadmap for getting oil flowing normally again. After two days of markets teetering on the possibility that maybe this thing was heading toward some kind of controlled descent, last night’s speech basically punted that narrative off a cliff.

And I have some suspicions that someone had a pretty damn good idea of what was going to be said long before Trump took the podium.

During the Unusual Whales morning show, Anthony and I noted unusual options activity in several oil names. First off, while the entire oil sector was down considerably on the day, $XOM $172.5 calls expiring on April 17th hit the tape with size. Over 1,100 contracts transacted at the ask for an average fill of $1.31 per contract. Come market open, this contract hit a high of $3.15 for an overnight gain of over 140%.

Right in tandem with the $XOM positioning, we also caught some spice on the $CVX $202.5 calls for 4/10/2026. Once again, around 1,100 contracts hit the tape at the ask for an average fill of $2.34 per contract.

At open, they hit a high of $6.00 even, for an overnight gain of 156%. And ultimately, these contracts are just a few that we saw lighting up the tape, with $CVX leading the charge of ask-side call volume.

As the trading day has progressed through today’s session, the move has largely unwound as equities rallied the gap down, and oil saw a solid pullback from those reactionary highs; but only time, and geopolitics, will tell just where the markets are headed.
