One trip to Iceland cost me an extra $275 shortly after landing. Another trip cost a friend $700 in speeding fines she didn't see coming.

I’ve visited Iceland four times, and while it’s one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world, it’s also incredibly easy to make costly mistakes, no matter how many times you’ve visited.

These aren’t just minor inconveniences. I’m talking about hundreds of dollars lost, unnecessary stress, and moments that could’ve been avoided with a little preparation.

Here’s what I wish I had known before my first trip to Iceland and what you need to know before yours.

1. Not Dressing for the Season

One trip, I made the mistake of leaving my proper coat behind.

Big mistake.

Iceland’s weather is no joke—wind, rain, and cold can hit you all in one day, even outside of winter. I ended up walking to a mall and spending $275 on a waterproof coat just to stay warm. I still use it to this day, but that’s money I didn’t have to spend if I had a solid packing list.

What to do instead:

• Pack waterproof outerwear (not just water-resistant)

• Dress in layers (base + mid + outer shell)

• Don’t underestimate the wind chill

2. Missing Your Airport Shuttle & Taking a Taxi

After missing our airport shuttle once, we panicked and took a taxi.

Let’s just say… never again.

Taxis from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík can cost a small fortune ($200+ one-way), while the Flybus is a much smarter option at about $35 one way.

Why Flybus wins:

• Timed with flight arrivals

• Reliable and easy

• Option to upgrade for hotel drop-off

3. Getting a Speeding Ticket (Yes, Even 5 MPH Over)

If you’re renting a car in Iceland, read this twice:

Speeding tickets are no joke.

Even going just 5 miles over the speed limit can cost you. We’re talking $200–$800+ fines.

And here’s the kicker:

• Cameras automatically scan your license plate

• You won’t know until later

• The charge shows up at your rental car counter or credit card

Also, this goes without saying: don’t drink and drive. Ever. Iceland has extremely strict laws around this.

4. Not Buying Alcohol Duty-Free

Alcohol in Iceland is heavily taxed, so it’s expensive. Like… shockingly expensive.

If you skip duty-free at the airport, you’ll feel it later, I know we did.

What to do instead:

• Buy alcohol duty-free upon arrival

• Look for happy hour deals in Reykjavík

5. Waiting Too Long to Book Flights, Hotels & Tours

If Iceland is on your list, please don’t wait.

I’ve seen:

• Hotels completely sold out

• Tours fully booked days (or weeks) in advance

• Prices skyrocket during peak season

Especially in summer, demand is high, and availability is limited.

6. Not Booking a Hotel with Free Breakfast

Food in Iceland adds up quickly.

Skipping a hotel with complimentary breakfast might seem like a small decision, but over a few days, it can cost you a lot more than you think (Approximately $25 per person per day).

Why it matters:

• Saves time and money each morning (though I still recommend visiting coffee shops and bakeries for a mid-day pick-me-up)

• Reduces decision fatigue

7. Buying Bottled Water

Iceland has some of the cleanest tap water in the world.

Buying bottled water? Completely unnecessary.

What to do instead:

• Bring a reusable water bottle

• Refill it anywhere (even at a river, stream, or waterfall)

Lesson: Save your money and reduce waste.

8. Taking Out Cash

Iceland is basically a cashless society.

I’ve gone entire trips without using physical money.

What to know:

• Credit/debit cards are accepted almost everywhere (minus American Express)

• Contactless payment is the norm

• ATMs = unnecessary fees

Lesson: Skip the cash. Save some coin.

Helpful Tip: Maximize Your Credit Card Rewards

Before you travel, take a look at which credit cards in your wallet offer the best rewards for the activities you know you’ll do in Iceland.

Think dining out, grocery store runs for snacks and drinks, and gas if you’re renting a car. The right card can earn you serious points or cash back on everyday trip expenses you’d be spending money on anyway.

Final Thoughts: These Are All Avoidable

Iceland is absolutely worth every penny. These mistakes? All avoidable with a little planning and the right information ahead of time.

Iceland rewards the prepared traveler. The ones who know what to pack, how to get around, and where to save.

You research the flights.

You compare the hotels.

Sometimes, you pick a group trip not because you can’t plan on your own, but to skip the mental load.

For the last ten years, I’ve been planning adventurous, culturally immersive trips to Iceland.

And today, I’m breaking down how to choose the right group trip and avoid wasting time or money on a poorly designed itinerary.

We’ll look at the real give-and-take of booking a group trip to Iceland and how to list your non-negotiables before committing.

1. Group Size

Let’s start with the big one: size.

If you want:

• A small group (8–14 people)

• More personal interaction

• More time at attractions

• Flexible pacing

You will likely pay more. Why?

Private transportation, guides, and logistics are divided among fewer people.

A 30–40 person group will almost always cost less per person.

But the tradeoff?

• Waiting for everyone to load and unload

• Tighter schedules

• Limited time at stops

• Less personal connection

Ask yourself: Do I want maximum savings?

Or do I want a personalized experience?

There’s no wrong answer. Just be honest here.

2. Built-In Free Time

Some Iceland itineraries are packed from sunrise to sunset. On paper, that sounds productive. But in reality, you may need a vacation from your vacation afterward.

Look for:

• Free days in Reykjavík

• Evenings without mandatory scheduled activities

• Optional add-ons instead of mandatory tours

If downtime matters to you, put this on your non-negotiable list.

3. Transportation

This one is huge in Iceland.

Driving sounds romantic, until you’re:

• Watching your gas gauge like a hawk on a long, remote stretch

• Adding gravel insurance at the rental counter

• Navigating sudden weather shifts, especially in winter

• Passing speed cameras (speeding tickets are pricey in Iceland - avoid!!!)

• Staying alert for sheep and other livestock on the road

Private transportation costs more.

But here’s the tradeoff: You get to stare at lava fields and moss-covered hills instead of gripping the steering wheel and triple-checking you didn’t miss a turn.

4. Pacing

Some Iceland itineraries try to do:

• Golden Circle

• South Coast

• Snæfellsnes Peninsula

• Highlands

All in five days.

That’s ambitious.

Relaxing? Probably not.

Ask yourself: Do I want to check boxes on my trip? Or do I want time to stand in front of Skógafoss Waterfall without feeling rushed?

And guess what, that question applies whether you’re going DIY or group.

5. Accommodation Style

Location is a hidden tradeoff most people overlook.

Is your hotel:

• Central and walkable in Reykjavík?

• Or cheaper because it’s 20–40 minutes outside the metro area?

• Does it include breakfast?

In Iceland, breakfast isn’t just a nice perk. It saves money and reduces daily decision fatigue.

Hotel location affects the rhythm, and rhythm affects your overall experience.

Bottom Line

Choosing a group trip to Iceland isn’t only about finding the cheapest option.

It’s about finding one that matches your travel style and needs.

Icelandic Glacial Water

If you’ve been to Iceland, you already know the tap water is incredible. It’s cold, clean, and sourced from natural springs and glaciers.

While nothing beats drinking water in Iceland, you can find Icelandic Glacial bottled water in many U.S. grocery stores. It’s usually sourced from the Ölfus Spring, one of Iceland’s naturally replenishing water systems.

Skyr

Skyr is a thick, creamy cultured dairy product that’s been part of Icelandic cuisine for over 1,000 years.

It’s often compared to yogurt, but it’s technically a cultured dairy product made from skim milk using heirloom Icelandic cultures.

Originally brought over by the Vikings, Skyr is:

• High in protein

• Lower in sugar than many yogurts

• Milder in flavor than traditional yogurt

You can often find Siggi’s skyr at major grocery chains.

Popular flavors like vanilla, salted caramel, mixed berries, and coconut make it an easy breakfast or snack.

Try it with granola for an extra crunch.

Icelandic Beer

If your local grocery store carries international craft beers, look for Einstök Ölgerð.

Their White Ale and Arctic Pale Ale offer a clean, refreshing taste that reflects Iceland’s pure water and brewing traditions.

Fun Fact: Did you know that alcohol was illegal in Iceland until 1989. March 1st is Icelandic National Beer Day.

Icelandic Shop ships authentic Icelandic products worldwide, including duties and fees.

If you follow Icelandic news, you may have heard that Reynisfjara, the beloved black sand beach on the South Coast, has been significantly impacted by severe winter storms.

Due to erosion, large sections of sand have been taken by the ocean.

Foot access to parts of the basalt formations and cave have disappeared (pictured below from October 2025).

The shoreline now sits much farther back than before.

Why is this a big deal?

But that approach misses what makes Reykjavik special.

It isn’t just a gateway, it’s a cultural hub.

Giving it more than one day allows you to slow down and experience:

• The city’s food scene, from cozy cafés to elevated Icelandic dining

• Walking tours and museums that provide context for Iceland’s history and identity

Staying longer also helps with jet lag.

Instead of rushing straight to the Ring Road or the South Coast, Reykjavík gives you space to ease into bigger adventures without feeling depleted on day one.

Unpopular Take: Reykjavík isn’t skippable; it’s foundational.

2. The South Coast Over the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is a popular sightseeing route for a reason, but if you’re short on time, the South Coast is my top recommendation.

Cinematic waterfalls, unreal black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, and coastal cliffs are packed into one scenic stretch.

Unpopular Take: If you have to choose only one, choose the South Coast.

3. You Don’t Need to Rent a Car

Renting a car in Iceland is often framed as essential.

But it’s not the only or even the best option for everyone.

Bus tours and small‑group excursions offer:

• Experienced local guides who add context you’d miss driving solo

• No stressing about weather, road conditions, or parking

• A chance to actually enjoy the views instead of focusing on the road

For solo travelers, first‑timers, or anyone who doesn’t want to drive long distances in unpredictable conditions, bus tours can be a relief, not a limitation.

Unpopular Take: You don’t need to drive to have an enriching Iceland experience.

4. A Return Trip Is Inevitable

Many people treat Iceland as a once-in-a-lifetime destination. But it’s the kind of place that calls you back again and again.

There’s always another region to explore, another season to experience, another version of the country revealed by different light and weather.

In fact, during my upcoming group trip in August, I will experience the midnight sun for the first time! ☀️

Unpopular Take: Iceland is not a one-and-done travel destination. There are just too many beautiful things to see.

A simple but often overlooked way to improve your travel experience is to learn the local language, even if it's just the basics.

Learning just a handful of key phrases can make your trip smoother, more affordable, and even more fun.

This week on The Thought Card Podcast, I sat down with Lindsay Dow, a language educator fluent in over 15 languages. She shared budget-friendly tools and essential phrases every traveler should know before hopping on a plane.

Quick Wins for Language Learning

1. Start learning as soon as you know your travel plans. The more time you can dedicate to practice, the better. Even 5 minutes a day adds up.

2. Use free trials and lifetime deals to save big on language learning apps.

3. Skip grammar drills. Instead, focus on set phrases and keywords. Learn how to order food and ask for help.

   1. Are you a vegetarian?

   2. Do you have allergies?

   3. Any health concerns? Start there.

4. Learn phrases you’ll actually use, like basic greetings, polite expressions like “please” and “thank you,” and practical questions like “How much is this?”

5. Prioritize listening and speaking over reading and writing.

6. Choose language learning resources that align with your overall learning preferences (audio, visual, etc.).

7. Hear the language being spoken as much as possible through podcasts, music, and movies.

8. Practice speaking out loud daily (even if solo), not just listening.

9. At the destination, use signs as a learning tool.

Overall, language learning doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. And you don’t have to be fluent or have perfect pronunciation to be effective, either.

But here’s the big question: Are hotel safes really safe?

In the latest episode of The Thought Card Podcast, I sat down with Rachel Bloom, designer of smart anti-theft bags, to talk about outsmarting thieves and keeping valuables secure while traveling.

Rachel shared her honest take:

“I do use hotel safes, but I’m always cautious. Especially in some countries that are maybe a little bit less safe, I’m always afraid that someone who works at the hotel could potentially come in and steal cash or things that would be harder to trace back to them.” – Rachel Bloom

So, while hotel safes are convenient, they are not foolproof.

If you decide to use a hotel safe, here are a few smart precautions:

✅ Keep cash and passports with you when possible
✅ Store laptops and tablets in the safe
✅ Take a photo of valuables before locking them away (and a photo of them inside the safe)

⚠️ Pro Tip: If your in-room hotel safe isn’t working, contact the front desk immediately and ask for a new room or a refund. Never stay somewhere you don’t feel secure.

New York City is absolutely gorgeous this time of year! ☀️🌸🌷

While attending WITS (Women in Travel Summit), I spent last weekend exploring Downtown New York City, and I am obsessed.

I often visit Midtown Manhattan or the Upper East Side because it’s convenient and familiar. However, exploring a new neighborhood is soooo refreshing!

I appreciated Downtown’s architecture, history, and art exhibits, as well as the bagels and cream cheese (yummy!). 🥯

There are also lots of green spaces and the shimmering Hudson River views are breathtaking anytime of day.

And while Downtown is still a tourist hotspot, it’s surprisingly quiet on the weekends.
