Welcome to The Creative Advocate

Strategy by design for women ready to take the next step and stand out.

The Creative Advocate is where creativity, ethics, culture, language, identity, and strategy meet real life.

It’s a space for those 45 and beyond, who have built careers, navigated complexity, and are now asking a different kind of question:

What’s my next move and how do I design it on my own terms?

Hi, I’m Betina, The Creative Advocate

Betina-Cunado

Lawyer, bioethicist, translator, copywriter, and former legislative advisor.
But more than anything, I’ve always been an advocate for women.

Not just in theory, but in practice.

My work has taken many forms. I’ve shaped policy, navigated ethical complexity, worked at the intersection of law and decision-making, studied literary translation during the pandemic, and ultimately chose to leave a traditional career path to build something of my own.

At first glance, these paths may seem unrelated.
But they all share a common thread:

Advocacy, thoughtful, intentional, and deeply rooted in ethics.

As the French author Gustave Flaubert said:

“It is not the pearls that make the necklace, it is the thread.

The Creative Advocate is the necklace, and my unique career background and expertise, is the thread.

Why “The Creative Advocate”?

This name didn’t come easily.

I explored versions of myself. The Creative Writer felt cliché, The Creative Bioethicist seemed vague, and The Creative Lawyer didn’t quite fit.

Because I’m not just one thing.
And neither are you.

The Creative Advocate is the intersection of everything I’ve done and everything I stand for:

Creativity as a tool for strategy.

Advocacy as a way of moving through the world.

Design as a conscious act of building what comes next.

What You’ll Find Here

This Substack began as a cultural magazine.

Today, it has evolved into something more intentional, a space aligned with my consulting work.

The shift began when I wrote a post about a 21st-Century Cinderella, and I realized that I needed to go deeper into my purpose: helping women positioned themselves and stand out.

I write about power and how it actually works, business and strategic positioning, AI ethics and the future we’re shaping, culture, influence, and decision-making, and designing your next chapter with clarity and agency.

This is not about reinvention through positive thinking.
It’s about:

precision,

knowing what matters,

what doesn’t,

and how to move accordingly.

The story behind the story

The Cinderella Story is by far my favourite post. I had so much fun writing it, and it really captures how I see the world.

What I didn’t realise while writing it is that Cinderella is me. Not the fairy tale about a princess, but the story of a woman in the 21st-Century.

Like Cinderella, I was left by my ex-husband, not in my forties but in my late twenties.

I also watched male colleagues, less capable than me, being promoted while I stayed behind.

The pandemic became a major turning point in my life. I realised that everything I had worked for and believed in for decades was, in many ways, a lie.

As a bioethicist and legislative advisor, watching governments and international institutions mismanage the biggest global crisis of our time with such a level of ignorance was too much for me.

In 2022, I quit my job, moved to Paris, launched The Creative Advocate (then called Books and Ethics), and began my solopreneur journey.

You can read more about my journey in Nothing Went Exactly According to Plan.

Now I’m based in Barcelona, but as Virginia Woolf once wrote:

As a woman, my country is the whole world.

The Way I See It

My background as a political strategist, bioethicist, and copywriter shapes how I see the world.

I don’t believe in surface-level advice or generic frameworks.

I believe in clarity over noise, strategy over urgency, and ethics over shortcuts.

And I’m deeply influenced by the idea that women must think critically about power, independence, and the structures we operate within.
