say “peace out and good luck” and it appears I am not the only one. There are a variety of reasons why I think small press has a hard time with conventions, but it comes down to what any given creator thinks is worth it. I have watched in recent months as more cons are stating that they will not be returning, or that their future hinges on the very next show.

High costs, limited returns

Comic conventions can be extremely expensive for small press publishers. Depending on the size of the con, a booth can range from several hundred to thousands of dollars. Also to account for are travel, accommodation, and promotional costs. For so many in small press, the return on the investment simply can not justify the expense, especially depending on the size of the fanbase.

Thanks for reading The Comics Rag’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

With some of the cheapest tables being around $60 for a small, one-day show, breaking even still completely depends on who shows up and how well it was marketed.

Crowded market

Larger shows draw in larger publishers which is hopeful to attract larger crowds because of their booths. Smaller booths may get to share the convention space with these larger companies, but booths often get overshadowed or unnoticed by those in attendance.

At this point, Marvel, DC, and Image still account for over 70% of comic book market sales. It is already an uphill battle against larger marketing and historical companies. This is not even taking into account the currently dominating force that is manga.

Entertainment wins

Comic conventions have changed from a focus on comic books and their creators, shifting to pop culture, TV shows, movies, and their stars. Many cons now have major brands to garner a larger audience, which means attendees are more interested in celebrity photo ops, panels, and cosplay contests.

Almost every comic convention attended now has a large focus on cosplay with multiple competitions and large attendance. It is great for the convention itself because it ups the attendance numbers, however, they are clearly not there for comic books, especially from small press publishers.

Networking is good though, right?

Often touted as networking hubs, breaking through to established industry pro’s and collaborators is already difficult enough for small press publishers. Depending on where you are in the country, you might end up at a show that doesn’t even invite higher-profile creators. Hanging out with friends is great, but we could go to dinner have so much more fun.

Many creators have reported that, while they hoped for networking achievements at cons, they ended up realizing that larger publishers prioritize already-established relationships or creators who have a large following.

Rebooting

Managing a booth for a comic convention is physically and mentally exhausting. This is especially true for a small team and solo creators. These days are spent engaging with attendees while sacrificing creative work and entering into a social overload. Preparing and attending cons detracts from comic creation, promotion, and online marketing. There have been many creators who get burnt out from creating altogether because of the time investment spent on these shows.

Final thoughts

While comic conventions can offer some exposure, the financial and personal toll on small press publishers might not make them worth attending, especially when compared to more cost-effective digital marketing strategies or smaller, niche conventions tailored to indie creators.

Hanging out with friends is always fun, and meeting new people is great, but we have to start figuring up the costs and making the decisions for ourselves of what is worth our investment.

Thanks for reading The Comics Rag’s Substack! A vehicle just for that,” added Vice President Tyrone Jackson.

Programs and Opportunities

Thoth Corporation offers a diverse array of programs, including:

Comic Book Creation Course: Learn to craft captivating stories, design stunning artwork, and publish your comics.

Project Management Course: Gain essential skills in planning, executing, and overseeing creative projects.

Journalism Course: Explore the fundamentals of reporting, writing, and media ethics.

Creative Writing Workshops: Develop your writing skills through interactive workshops led by experienced authors.

Donors Workshops: Supporters of Thoth will also be invited to join in on Thoth’s online workshops covering a variety of creative topics.

Support Thoth Corporation’s Mission

As Thoth Corporation embarks on this exciting journey, we invite the community to join us in making a lasting impact.
