Hi! I’m María Vargas Aguilar. I’m a graphic and brand designer, I work in tech, and I’m based in Tucson. I started this newsletter because I'm constantly collecting things: typefaces, brand work, cultural oddities, articles I want to remember. This newsletter is where I share them with you.
What is Staring at the Ceiling?
Staring at the Ceiling is a newsletter about graphic design, visual culture, and the things worth noticing — delivered twice a month.
Each issue is a mix of design tools and resources worth bookmarking, visual culture criticism, typography, links to great design writing, and whatever I’ve been into lately.
Things Worth Noticing is also a recurring interview series where I invite designers and creative people to share what’s been catching their attention lately, how they think, and how they make.
The name is a lyric from ABBA’s “One of Us.” Staring at the ceiling is what you do when you’re thinking, wondering, turning something over; something I do often. That’s more or less what this newsletter is: a place to slow down and notice the world around you.
Who reads Staring at the Ceiling?
Designers and visually curious people. Anyone with lots of tabs open and opinions about why things look the way they do.
You can expect Staring at the Ceiling in your inbox on the first and third Monday of the month.
This newsletter is free, the paid option is available to my parents and anyone else who might want to donate.
If you’d like to support the newsletter, you can buy me a coffee.
