With this year’s Minnesota Book Awards recently announced, we are delighted to see Spout contributors recognized, with Locker Room Talk contributor Alison McGhee winning for middle grade literature for Weird Sad and Silent, and Lush contributor Paula Cisewski nominated for the poetry award for The Becoming Game. • Friday, April 10th at 6pm, Casket Arts Building - Our friends at are hosting a release party for their third issue, as well as holding a raffle to raise funds for the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee. For the raffle, we’ve donated a rare issue of Spout Magazine #28, which features early-career poems by Richard Siken, including one that hasn’t otherwise been published. We’ll also be selling books, t-shirts, and enjoying the event.

• April 18th-19th, Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - We will be tabling at the all-new Rewind Book Fair! Publishing the magazine from 1989 to 2015 was such a treat and how we first built our Spout community. We’re thrilled to be back, this time as an online magazine, but with our same DIY-like determination and commitment to weird writers. Spout Press is thrilled to unveil our brand new website, beautifully designed by and with support from the Council of Literary Magazines & Presses (CLMP) via the Small Press Future Fund.

Our new website at once captures Spout’s DIY, 90’s punk roots (check out that CMYK!) while adding features such as an accessible, responsive design and a user-friendly store to order books directly from Spout. The website includes several original drawings from Spout Magazine’s archive, connecting our earliest history to today as we continue book publishing and prepare to bring back Spout Magazine as an online magazine (more on that soon👀). We’d love for you to take a self-guided tour of our new digital digs!

As we share this news, we remain committed to drawing attention to ICE’s continued presence and impact upon the Twin Cities and Minnesota we call home. Give to the Max Day is coming, and so we are, like last year, on a new newsletter service. While beehiiv was good to us, we’ve joined Substack to be alongside more of our literary publishing friends and hope to have some more community here.

We’ve had a good year. We’ve had a full year with our new best distributor friend ever, Asterism Books. We returned to AWP for the first time in over a decade. We expanded our collective to six active members, and we’ll soon debut a brand-new website. Oh, and our most-recent title Locker Room Talk: Women in Private Spaces won a Minnesota Book Award for Best Anthology! We held in-person events in St. Paul with the East Side Freedom Library, Duluth with the Minnesota Humanities Center, and held a celebratory concert and reading in Minneapolis at the Hook & Ladder Theater with contributors Kao Kalia Yang, Alison McGhee, Casey Jarrin, and bands Kith & Kin, Squinny, and Whispered the Rabbit.

We’ve done a lot, and we’ve had fun doing it! And we want to do more. That is why in 2026 we will be relaunching Spout Magazine on our brand new website!! Our original magazine ran from 1989 to 2015 and published the likes of Richard Siken, Sarah Manguso, Hoa Nguyen, Hadara Bar-Nadav, Howard Zinn, Charles Bukowski, and so many others, and we can’t wait to bring it back.

But we do need your help to do all of this. This Give to the Max Day, we are hoping to raise funds for the magazine and our next big ideas. With your help, we will:

• Relaunch Spout Magazine as an online magazine

• Host issue launch parties with live music and readings by local contributors in the Twin Cities

• Publish our next two books, forthcoming in 2026

  • Every Autism an Architecture by Tommy Frank, a debut collection of lyric essays about neurodivergence and genderqueerness.

  • Cicada Wheel by Jesse Kuhn, a debut poetry collection chronicling one’s struggle to live with both integrity and revolutionary ideals in a time of hyper-capitalism.

This Juneteenth, we are remembering the late-great J. Otis Powell‽, whose final book Waiting for a Spaceship we had the privilege of publishing in 2017. Powell was a legend in the Twin Cities writing and spoken word community and was known as an uncompromising artist and a generous mentor. We are continuing to ride the wave of Locker Room Talk’s nomination as a finalist for the MN Book Awards ahead of the awards ceremony on April 22nd. Co-editor Michelle Filkins has been busy!

• MPR News: Michelle and LRT contributor Alison McGhee joined Nina Moni on Minnesota Now to discuss the anthology’s centering of women’s connection and support of each other.

• Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library: Michelle and co-editor Margret Aldrich on how LRT came to be.

• MN Book Awards: Michelle and Margret also spoke to panel host and Spout-author Carolyn Holbrook alongside fellow anthology nominees about the how LRT and the other anthologies’ platform diverse voices.

While the Trump administration has left us furious, grieving, and afraid of what is to come, Minnesota’s recognition of our feminist, trans-inclusive collection—one that was first conceived by Michelle and Margaret Aldrich as a clapback to the rhetoric of Trump’s rampant misogyny—has been a bright spot and an emboldening reminder of how narrative can help us resist injustice. We are humbled to have this collection be recognized and part of this cultural moment.

This is our first ever grant funds, and to be honest, we’re not used to this kind of cash influx, as will be no surprise to those of you that remember our ‘90s DIY punk scene days. Dear Friends of Spout Press,

In anticipation of Give to the Max Day, we are trying out a new, fancy newsletter thing. And what a year it has been!

In March, our longtime distributor (Small Press Distribution) abruptly closed, leaving many of our books unaccounted for in warehouses across the country. We were on Zoom calls with hundreds of other publishers who, like us, had no idea where their books had gone. Unlike some other presses, we were fortunate and found our stock. We were able to setup distribution with Asterism Books, beginning a new era for Spout.

While the move to Asterism Books has been an extremely positive development, the timing of the abrupt dissolution of SPD meant lost revenue, as both Locker Room Talk and Sweet Nothing had been on SPD bestseller lists in the months leading up to the unexpected closure.

With your help, we are looking to raise funds to make Spout Press more sustainable and to launch exciting projects. Each donation will help us

1. Recover hundreds of dollars in owed sales from Small Press Distribution and new distribution setup.

2. Improve and redesign our website and make it universally accessible. 

3. Fund our next three books, including competitive advances for authors and artists and book launch events.

4. Continue a recently launched initiative to digitize all back issues of Spout Magazine.

As a small volunteer-run press, we can’t fund these goals alone. Your donation will go directly to these goals. We hope you will consider helping us by donating and spreading the word. To incentivize giving, we have expanded this year’s special offers for donors. 

• For donations of $10 or more, you will receive a copy of Spout Magazine from our archive.

• For donations of $25 or more, you will receive a mystery book from Spout Press’s backlist.

• For donations of $50 or more, you will receive a Spout Press stocking cap.

• For donations of $75 or more, you will receive a Spout Press stocking cap and a mystery book from Spout Press’s backlist.
