Over the past season, I’ve been paying attention.

Not to trends.
Not to algorithms.
But to where my work feels most honest, most life-giving, and most sustainable.

And the answer has become quietly, clearly obvious.

I am shifting my primary focus back to design: book formatting, cover design, and logo design.

For the past few months, my work has been centered around sustainable marketing—helping writers and small businesses step off the hamster wheel of trends and instead build rhythms that last. That work has mattered deeply to me, and it still does.

But as this new season has unfolded, I’ve felt a familiar tug—one that’s been with me from the very beginning.

Every creative business has moments where the work begins to whisper something new.

Lately, that part of the work has been asking for more space.

Not because the old work was wrong—but because the work itself has grown.

It’s about doing the right things consistently.

Here’s how to create a weekly rhythm that supports your creativity, grows your audience, and actually feels doable.

1. Start With Your Author Identity (Not Tasks)

Most authors start their marketing routine by asking: “What should I post?”

But the better question is: “Who am I as an author, and how do I want to show up?”

• Tuesday - Character/Relationship Focus: Share a special look at your characters and how they interact with each other.

• Wednesday - Story Snippet: Tease your story with quotes, reviews, and aesthetics.

• Thursday - Behind-the-Scenes/Author Life: Share about your routines, struggles, joys, process.

• Friday - Engagement/Community Question: Share a question, poll, or interactive moment.

And here’s a secret: you can change it up. While I have content ideas for five days of the week, I only post three times. This gives me the freedom to choose what works best in my season.

You don’t need to spend hours every day creating content.

• Brainstorm once a week (10 minutes)

• Draft your posts in one session (20–30 minutes)

Instead of “Here’s my new book!”, try:

“Have you ever met a character who surprised you on the page? Mine did this week . . .”

Or:

“Do you enjoy slow-burn romances or love-at-first-sight? I’d love to hear your favorite.”

The engagement you get from genuine curiosity is far deeper—and far more sustainable—than algorithm-driven posts.

As a mom, I know my readers love when I share little details (even unintentionally) about mom life. One of my most interacted with Instagram stories happened because I heard a crash in the other room and said something to the camera like “I’ll be right back.”

Real life doesn’t usually look picture perfect, and your readers want to see those moments.

But that brings me to my next point . . .

What Relational Marketing Is NOT

It’s not:

• Manipulative conversations to increase sales

• Manufactured vulnerability

• Over-sharing your personal life

• Posting every day to “stay relevant”

1. Know Your Season

Ask yourself am I drafting? Revising? Launching? Resting?

Each season requires a different pace and content style.
You don’t have to show up the same way all year, and you shouldn’t.

2. Choose a Small Set of Repeatable Content Types

Instead of reinventing the wheel every time you post, choose 3–5 recurring content themes and reuse them weekly.

For example:

• Monday: a writing update

• Wednesday: a character or worldbuilding spotlight

• Friday: a personal note or reflection

This creates familiarity for your audience, and simplicity and predictability for you.

3. Focus on Connection, Not Performance

Consistency doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from caring more deeply.

Instead of asking yourself, “how can I grow my audience faster?” ask, “what’s a small way that I can connect with my readers today.”

Small, sincere touchpoints build community. Community builds loyalty. Loyalty sells books.

Slow growth is strong growth.

Why This Works

It allows you build what I call, rooted, rhythmic, and relational pillars in sustainable marketing.

When your marketing is aligned with who you are (rooted), paced in a way you can maintain (rhythmic), and centered around real relationships (relational), consistency becomes natural, not forced.

You don’t burn out because you’re not pretending to be someone else. You’re simply showing up as yourself, steadily and sustainably.

2. Focus on Your Core Message
   What story do you want your audience to understand about you? This could be your writing process, your values, or the emotions your books evoke. Everything you share should reinforce that core message.

3. Create Content That Reflects You
   Instead of copying what’s trending, create posts that feel natural to your personality and your author voice. This could be:

   • Behind-the-scenes glimpses of your writing process

   • Small insights or tips from your stories

   • Personal anecdotes that connect with your readers

4. Be Consistent, Not Perfect
   You don’t need viral posts to build a lasting audience. Consistency in tone, style, and schedule matters far more than chasing the latest trend. A steady, authentic presence builds trust over time.

You’ve probably seen indie authors rapid-release books and think, “How do you do that?” I know I wondered for a long time. I even asked several authors, all of whom were kind to respond and willing to share, but most never found time in their busy schedules.

So I created my own. I created my own publishing schedule with the intention of being able to write slowly. Because, well, life happens. And life happens a lot in my house. As a working SAHM of two littles and another on the way, it’s vital for me to find a sustainable publishing schedule.

Over the weekend, I sat down and planned out all of my writing projects through 2032. And you know what surprised me about it? It reignited my zeal for writing.

Each project is carefully thought through and intentionally planned. I created an 18-month publishing schedule for novels, a 12-month publishing schedule for novellas, and a 6-month publishing schedule for short stories (though I’m using a 3-month schedule since I’m not doing professional copy edits, proofreading, and designing my own covers).

Even with the publishing schedule, this takes some planning. I’m not publishing a “big” project until the end of 2026, and then I will begin publishing two books a year beginning in 2027. Meaning that, you need to plan at least one year ahead—here’s where the sustainability aspect comes in, because, again, this publishing schedule is built with the slow living in mind. It’s made to accommodate all types of writers: the fast, the slow, the messy, the ones to edit as they write, and the best part is, you can make it your own.
