This week’s note is about the New Edition, Toni Braxton, and Boyz II Men concert tour and what it showed me about the perseverance of community and brotherhood.

One night I was bored, and as I so often do, I wandered into my mom’s office. It wasn’t Thursday, so she wasn’t watching Scandal, and I didn’t hear the dramatic screams of a Lifetime movie. Instead, a deep, soulful harmony I had never heard before came from her office. She was watching BET’s The New Edition Story. And as I sat down and watched it with her, I instantly fell in love with their story of brotherhood, persistence, and the way they recognized the artists they met along the way.

New Edition is known for a lot of things: ups, downs, money issues, and dissonance within the group itself. But at the end of the day, they always managed to come together to represent a united idea: brotherhood. From growing up together in Roxbury to making it big with a number one record, they always came together no matter the difficulties they faced. This was an idea that was clear in their performance.

At the Hampton show for the New Edition, Toni Braxton, and Boyz II Men tour, the harmony between all the members was clear. And aside from the harmony, there was joy and energy that was palpable even from the crowd. While performing hits like “Mr. Telephone Man” and “If It Isn’t Love,” their synchronicity was amazing despite it being years since the original records were released.

An admirable thing about New Edition is their support of other artists, something that was evident during the tour. While watching the BET special, I learned that Mike Bivins was an executive producer for one of Boyz II Men’s albums. This showed an interconnectedness among the different artists. And as Boyz II Men gave a stellar performance, they made sure to shout out New Edition for their role in their success. But on their own merit, their performance was filled with joy and energy. Even when they sat down and sang directly to the crowd, it felt so intimate, as if they were reaching out to everyone in the audience.

In an Instagram post, Toni Braxton called herself an honorary seventh member of New Edition and talked about how they had created a family with the two different boy groups while on tour. Her performance was fun, empowering to all of the women in the crowd, and an overall high-energy performance that lit up the crowd as well. On the stage were the seamless transitions between each act, the harmonies they all presented, and the way they reached out to the crowd as an extension of the family on stage.

During the performances, all acts were interacting with the crowd, even giving out roses at some point, talking directly to certain people, and even walking into the crowd. The audience was not just paying to watch people perform; they were paying to be a part of one large family that night. It was a chance to witness the strength of the community on stage, and to be invited to join for one magical night.

Karen Taylor Bass, an award-winning media strategist, host of a WURD radio show, and my mom, had this to say about New Edition:

“Even going to a PWI, it was the one time everyone had something in common.”

This quote is a testament to the brotherhood within New Edition that was translated into a sense of community for the whole tour. Being able to see Boyz II Men, who I listened to every Christmas, Toni Braxton, who I would belt out in the car, and New Edition, whose documentary and music became a staple in my playlist, was such a full-circle moment. And the best part of this tour was being able to witness a community coming together in real-time, an experience that truly transcends sitting at home watching a documentary.

This week’s note is about the fear all of Gen Z feels as we look ahead to the future.

THIS IS PURELY AN OPINION PIECE THAT DOES CONTAIN BIAS BUT ALSO TRUTHS

Pretty in Print is supposed to be my space to talk about the lighthearted things like pop culture and what’s trending on TikTok. But unfortunately, I think we are in a time where it is necessary to speak about the state that our country has come to. And I know there is a lot of fuss about not revealing one’s political affiliation, but I think in this day and age, it is the true test of character. So I have no fear as I speak about the circumstances that we are all currently facing.

To put it plainly: I am scared. I look at the future, and I am, for the first time, fearful of what might be in ten years. And it isn’t just me; many people from my generation are living in genuine fear for their future. It all started when the United States decided that having a convicted felon, someone accused of sexual assault, and a former reality TV show host was better than a black woman. It genuinely sickens me when I look back at the campaign videos. The democratic choice, former Vice President Kamala Harris, preached hope, love, and a promise of a better future for all. Her campaign was one of joy, and for the first time in a long time, we saw a candidate who genuinely wanted to bring good. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump led a campaign fueled by fear, false promises, and manipulation.

When President Donald Trump lost the election, it solidified an idea I thought we had overcome: “a Black woman will never be enough in a White world.” A sad truth, but a truth that has been proven time and time again. President Trump has only held office for one year, yet it has felt like centuries, and the damage done feels irreversible.

Now today, February 2026 its hard to look at the future with anything but a rainy cloud following. It all started with Project 2025, a conservative initiative that would oppose reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigrant rights, and racial inequality. Then we see RFK Jr., a man with no medical training, acting as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. In what world is it okay to have someone who isn’t even a doctor making decisions about the health of a nation? A president is not running our nation; it’s being run by the billionaires and millionaires who put money into his pockets.

Our president is someone who has been convicted of felonies, has numerous sexual assault allegations, and was a known friend of the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Why is this acceptable? In the time President Trump has been in office, the United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization, defunded PBS, a news platform that serves over a billion, captured the president of Venezuela, and has led an immigration crisis that has caused five-year-olds and infants to be detained by ICE.

Pandemonium is too kind of a word to describe the state of our nation; it is TERRIFYING to turn on the news as an eighteen-year-old girl and fear my future. I’m scared of whether I will be able to pay for college, as there are questions surrounding federal aid for education, whether I will grow up healthy, and if I will grow up without witnessing a civil or even world war because of reckless actions. I fear every day for the lives of countless people less fortunate than I. Those ripped away from their families, countless lives destroyed because people sought out a better life for themselves and their families.

America used to be the land of the brave, home of the free. But recently, it seems like the land of the cowardly and home of the scared. I want to be hopeful, focus on the light and fluffy, but I cannot ignore what is going on around me. And you shouldn’t either.

This week’s note is about why society chooses to question some people for what they choose to enjoy, and the powerful realization that I should never be embarrassed about what I like.

One day in 2019, I was scrolling through my YouTube recommendations. I stumbled across a video titled BTS (FIRE) Official MV. I was bored and saw a boy group, so of course I clicked on it. One video turned into two, and two turned into an obsession centered on the Korean boy group BTS.

I was drawn in by the endearing members, elaborate performances, and their messages of self-love and confidence. I was excited to share my new favorite artists with those around me. Instead of being met with curiosity, I was met with judgment.

“What’s wrong with BTS?” I thought initially. Every time I shared it with someone, I would get weird looks, laughs, or the “So you're a Black girl obsessed with Korean men?” The more people I told, the more judgment I got in return. So my interest became quiet. I stopped talking about it publicly and mentioning it to those around me. I was suddenly embarrassed for liking something that was seemingly different from the norm. I would watch their music videos in private, going deeper into the world of K-pop. But if asked, I would never mention them as my favorite boy band or singers.

Eventually, my interest became so private that I grew out of it. If I couldn’t share my love with others, what’s the point of keeping it to myself? My interest sparked again when I reached high school. I had found a group of friends who unapologetically embraced K-pop. They would listen to it on blast, have photocards on the back of their phones, and mention it as their favorite music.

Seeing this helped me embrace my interest as well, until I came into predominantly Black spaces. I learned that it wasn’t as welcome here. It was a deviation from the standard interest; therefore, it was met with a lot of judgment. I became more selective. With some circles and friend groups, I would share, but most people wouldn’t be aware of my interest.

The final stage in this journey came as I started college. In my first week on campus, one of my friends had told me they enjoyed BTS. I paused; never before had I seen someone who looked like me openly express their love for K-pop. Something about it clicked in my head. Why am I hiding this piece of myself?

There’s something beautiful in learning to accept every piece of yourself, even the ones that may be different from the average. Individuality is what makes life worth living. If we are all the same, what’s the point? I think if everyone found beauty in embracing everyone’s unique interests, we would be living in a world that is much more open and a lot less jaded.

So, to everyone reading, I encourage you to have your weird likes and interests. They make you, YOU. And being happy with yourself is inherently more important than trying to force yourself into a box to make others happy. Always remember, embarrassment doesn’t exist.

How A24 Is Changing The Future of Cinema.

Movies are boring. Since early 2020, it’s just been a never-ending series of sequels, continuations, and just bad movies. The plot was either revealed in the trailer, it was poorly written, or it was just an all-around snooze-fest. It just felt like the movie industry was more focused on profit (the never-ending cycle of sequels and prequels) than on producing high-quality movies.

Now I know the title of this section is ambitious, but without a doubt, I believe A24’s movies are single-handedly (or playing a major role) in helping movies escape from their sleep-inducing rut. Obviously, there have been good movies to come out aside from A24, which, if you don’t know, is a New York-based entertainment company known for films such as Midsommar, Moonlight, and most recently, Marty Supreme.

But in my opinion, some of the most interesting and adventurous movies that have come out recently have been from A24. Take the Oscar-winning film Everything, Everywhere, All at Once as an example. The film is undoubtedly adventurous, from its concept to its costume design, to even its use of metaphors to ponder the meaning of life. As said in a review by owen is a filmaholic “it liberates the audience from the shackles of logic, sanity, and mediocre filmmaking.”

The film took risks in all aspects, which was ultimately loved by the audience. It was talked about online for weeks and even months; garnered the entertainment company 397 wins according to IMDb, and was rated a 4.3 on Letterboxd (which roughly translates to cinematic masterpiece). The public’s love of the movie is proof that the people yearn for creativity, and A24 is willing to provide.

The company averages a release of 18-24 movies a year. Some of them don’t perform well, like Opus and Dwayne Johnson's The Smashing Machine. But even so, they are still adventurous movies that challenge the norm of filmmaking. Looking ahead to 2025, A24 has been hyping up the release of their movie Marty Supreme. The film starring Timothée Chalamet has gotten people excited like never before.

Whether due to the marketing, stacked list of actors, or the prospect of the movie itself, the film company has brought back excitement. TikToks were circulating of people expressing more excitement for Marty Supreme than celebrating Christmas Day! I mean, if people are so excited for a movie that there are edits coming out from just a trailer, it has to be a sign that they are doing something right. Although the box office hasn’t caught up, the idea that the movie has created excitement and packed movie theaters at a time when there are normally five people in the theater is telling.

It’s telling us the people want excitement, they want creativity, and they want something new. And I believe A24 is willing to deliver. That’s why in the theater, even though there were five A24 trailers back-to-back, I wasn’t annoyed. I was inspired. The company shows a dedication to the true meaning of film: ART. And I believe for that reason, they will be a part of the future of cinema.

How Rachel Sennott Proves That Being Chronically Online Is A Superpower.

To the average person, a screentime of eight hours seems slightly concerning. In I Love LA, Rachel Sennott proves that being chronically online can actually be a superpower. The HBO show was created by the Gen Z phenomenon, Rachel Sennott. The show follows a friend group navigating social media, friendship, love, and career, all while living in the city of angels, aka Los Angeles.

The core friend group is played by Rachel Sennott, True Whitaker, Jordan Firstman, and Odessa A’zion. The show quickly grew popular on social media for its niche references and relatability to the current generation. In the final episode, when Charlie wore the “Can you quiz me on ocean facts?” shirt, a reference to “fish girl” from the viral Buzzfeed video, there was a collective smile on everyone’s face (to be specific, everyone with an insane screentime).

But in all seriousness, I think that I Love LA is more than just a funny show, I think it clearly shows our generation that growing up online is not the setback everyone makes it out to be. Because of our access, we have learned to adapt and develop our creativity like never before. Sennott is proof that powerful messages can be delivered in a way that embraces the generation’s love for social media. It’s evidence that humor and impact can coincide and that Gen Z is breaking boundaries for what it means to be a creative.

The show could have been a flashy and surface-level telling of life in LA, but instead, it touched on topics that can be relatable to anyone born after 1995. Finding a good job is hard, and even harder in the area you're passionate about. Adulting is hard when the world seems stacked against you. And all of these messages are delivered in a way that seems to be tailored for our generation to understand.

All in all, I think the comedy is endearing, and Rachel Sennott can artfully develop the messages of growing up in an age of uncertainty. But most importantly, I think it can also act as inspiration. The time we are spending online can be important. It can be channeled into what we love. If you love scrolling on art TikTok, create your own instead of consuming. Or if you know a bunch of niche references, make it into merch that you know people will definitely buy. Or if, like me, you like knowing everything going on in Hollywood and yapping about it, start a Substack and write. Take those eight hours of screentime and make it your superpower. You're going to be doomscrolling anyway, so why not have fun with it?

My Goals for 2026

For this issue’s Sof’s Edit, I thought I would list my top 5 goals for 2026, because I figure if I share them with everyone here, I have no choice but to follow through. By the end of 2026, I’m going to look back at this article and, for once (hopefully), I’ll be able to say that I accomplished all my goals for the New Year.

1. Complete at least one 75 Hard-Ish

   1. My best friend and I mutually agreed to start a 75 Hard-Ish with the rules of working out 4-5 times a week, reading for ten minutes a day, journaling, eating better, and making sure we spend time outside. My intention with this goal is to prove to myself that I can be consistent when it comes to my own self-care.

2. Watch 150 movies

   1. 2026 is looking like a great year for cinema. From Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, to Avengers Doomsday, to Dune: Part Three, all of which are movies I want to watch. Aside from that, there are so many classics I want to catch up on. I basically just want to max out my Letterboxd this year.

3. Read 12 books

   1. One book for every month. I’ve found that in the past few years, I’ve stopped reading so much, and this is coming from the person who used to read five books in one week. So, as we move on to 2026, I want to make sure I feed the part of me that loves lying down with a good book. And if there are any good movies or books you recommend, drop a comment!

4. Have more audacity

   1. Sometimes I let the fear stop me from doing what I want to. Fear of failure and judgment are two very strong forces. But it doesn’t do anything but hold me back. So in 2026, I am going to try to have more audacity in all aspects of my life.

5. Don’t just wish for it, work for it

   1. That’s my mantra for 2026. I have big dreams and a lot of Pinterest boards, but as I mentioned in my 3rd Love Notes & Lessons, sometimes I tend to dream more than I do. And that’s why this year I’m actually working towards my goals. Hence, writing this at 1:22 AM on a Monday. But I’m declaring it now, this is the year my dreams come true!

So those are my dreams, and in 360 days, let’s hope I accomplish them.

This week’s note is about the importance of curating your own magic during the holiday season.

At five, I was writing letters to Santa. Then at 10, I was watching the Santa tracker on Google, counting down the minutes until Santa was near my house. At 14, I stopped checking the trackers. And now at 18, I’m more excited for the release of Marty Supreme than actual Christmas Day.

Why is it that as we age, we lose the magic of life? Not just holidays like Christmas, but the whimsy of everyday moments. The fun of believing in something so hard and so vehemently that it becomes real to you. I’m only 18, yet the words of Charlie Brown feel truer every Christmas.

“I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel.”

I’m not depressed, but Charlie is right, I don’t feel the way I felt about Christmas just two years ago. And honestly, with everything going on in the world, it’s hard to.

I think of Christmas, and I think of snow. Yay! Happy! But then I think of how climate change is getting worse and how ice caps are still melting in Antarctica. Not so yay or happy. Then I can think of how fun it is to give and receive gifts, but then I think about the struggling economy, rising prices, and how our government makes it so that there are so many people out there who aren’t even able to put food on their table.

I even visited the Christmas tree in NYC, and while the beauty of Christmas in New York City is unmistakable, seeing the people without housing just reminded me of how our government is failing its citizens.

Still, Generation Z can’t—mustn’t—lose the spirit of Christmas. Although we are growing up in an era defined by uncertainty and instability, it is up to us to find the magic where it still exists. Like the song by She&Him, it’s important to “ see what’s beautiful in things that are ephemeral.”

Even in a time when it seems like all the odds are stacked against us, and an A24 movie seems more exciting than an actual holiday, we must stay whimsical. We must revel in the magic of everything, the beauty of being with family, even just eating a warm meal. There is even magic in using this time to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate.

There are ways to find beauty in this time, and as a generation, we can’t allow ourselves to become negative Nellies so soon. In the words of my favorite actor, Timothée Chalamet, “life is coming from you and not at you.” Put out into the world the energy you want to see return, and remember these two things this season:

1. Be grateful for everything, even the smallest of things.

One Simple Wish

This week’s note is about a speech given by your favorite actor.

If you were to ask me, my favorite actor, I would say in a second: Timothée Chalamet. I appreciate his filmography, his awkward and quirky personality, and his pursuit of greatness. I’ve been a fan since the ancient texts (pink Glossier hoodie), and will continue to be a fan in the resurgance (pink Marty Supreme jacket).

But what really solidified him as my favorite was his speech after being the youngest to win in the Best Male Actor category at the SAG Awards. Unlike most speeches that seem to be just for optics, his words felt genuine and relatable.

“I can’t downplay the significance of this award because it means the most to me, and I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight.”

His speech left the internet divided, some finding it arrogant that he would declare his ambition to emulate artists like Viola Davis and Daniel Day-Lewis. Others, like me, found it inspiring to see an actor publicly declare their aspirations. As if to let everyone know, “I’m not stopping, this is just the beginning of me.”

I myself am in the pursuit of greatness, something I have always said to myself and others, “I will be great.” I don’t know if it’s the perfectionism, love of competition, or passion for entertainment, but I promised myself my name will go down in history.

When I open my computer and start writing, when I scroll on TikTok, or read Variety, all I see is fuel rather than competition. Fuel to dream bigger and to work harder. But the higher I set the bar for myself, the heavier it feels to reach it. My Achilles Heel is that I dream too big to the point where my own dreams overwhelm me. “How can I accomplish this?” “Is it even possible to do that? ”

But watching this speech reminded me, no matter how big or impossible it seems, anything can come true. The only person who ever stops your dreams from becoming a reality is yourself. So, as we move into 2026, I am going to ask myself one question before I do anything: “Is this allowing me to be great?”

In my mind, greatness is multifaceted. I want a flourishing career, a happy family, a positive self-image, and a joyous social life. Greatness is having no regrets, making an impact for the better, and becoming the best version of yourself for yourself.

Greatness for me is not an option, but a requirement for how I plan to live my life. And in 5 years, when I’m interviewing Timothée Chalamet, I’m going to look him in his eyes and tell him, we are going to be some of the greats.

This week’s note is about the tour that reminded you why you fell in love with music in the first place.

Somewhere along the rise of digital media, I’ve seen creativity get lost in the algorithms. After seeing clips of tours happening over the past few years, I believed that the art of showmanship was dead. Concerts had minimal sets, no concept, and were based on moments that would go viral on TikTok. Then I had the opportunity to see “The Boy Is Mine Tour” and my opinion flipped.

To witness a show with costume design, set design, a concept, and actual performances reminded me that showmanship does still exist. And the fact that so many fans are in love with this tour tells a meaningful story: audiences are starving for MTV-era energy that has gotten lost in the digital age. But Brandy and Monica came to bring all of that energy back.

I walked into this tour uncertain of what to expect. I knew who Brandy and Monica were, of course, but I did not know their performance quality. The first thing that hinted this wasn’t a typical 2020s performance was the narrative elements. The two artists came to the stage on an elevator with the words “The Boy Is Mine” on top. While a small detail, it shows a level of thought that elevated the overall experience. Woven into performances were clips of the two and their rise to fame. This was an experience in itself; it connected the audience to the artists and built the anticipation for the following acts.

In terms of the actual performance, it felt like I was watching an old-school MTV music video. There was real singing, choreography, background dancers, and costume changes that felt aligned with the concept as a whole. The tour was not just a performance, but it was a production. It was handcrafted like a concept, rather than a playlist set to shuffle.

After years of instability from a global pandemic, social media burnout, and political unrest, many people are searching for that sense of familiarity, me included. And nostalgia correlates to intention. “The Boy is Mine” is the kind of song you put on when you are trying to remember that art does still exist, and the world is still spinning. It reminds us of a time when music and art weren’t disposable.

For Gen Z, who grew up watching more streams than stages, this tour felt like a portal. And the older generations were reminded of the greatness they once experienced—a time when musicality and artistry were important. And the concert does a great job of reminding us of that. Even when there was a tribute to Whitney Houston performed by the artists, it brought back something that the industry had been missing for years: respect for the greats.

This tour proved that people are excited for actual performances. They would pay for an experience over just someone singing and walking around on stage. We are entering a revival era where artists bring back the theatrics and conceptual shows.

“The Boy is Mine Tour” was more than just nostalgia. It was a reminder of the artistry, effort, and one-on-one connection that has been missing in the industry. It was an experience of a lifetime that transported me back to a time when art was appreciated. Looking around the arena, it was clear how deeply this show resonated with every age group—Gen Z kids singing along next to adults who grew up with the original song. No phones-down boredom or mid-show exits. Just pure presence. I think the real takeaway of all of this is that the future of music and media isn’t reinventing the wheel, but rather remembering how to drive it.

At Least Hollywood Recycles

Turns out Hollywood is very environmentally conscious; they reuse and recycle all the time! Every time I have stepped into a movie theater over the past two years, the trailers have all been sequels 20 years too late or a remake of a project that should’ve just stayed in the past. After seeing The Devil Wears Prada 2 teaser come out, I’ve been wondering: Is Hollywood out of ideas?

According to Google, nearly 40 movies that came out in 2025 were sequels. But this honestly goes back to post-pandemic. Following the succession of COVID and the writers’ strikes, it seems as if Hollywood has been at a loss for new ideas.

I first noticed it when they brought back Coming to America, the first movie, a staple in the Black community. The sequel, coming out 33 years after the original, was an obvious attempt at a money grab. The plot was nonexistent, and it was filled with various celebrity cameos. The actual substance of the movie was lacking entirely. It was clear to me, and hopefully a majority of viewers, that the movie was an attempt to make money following the economic struggles of the pandemic.

Then it happened again with Bad Boys, the second movie came out in 2003, then 17 years later they released Bad Boys for Life (2020) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). The later movies feature a visibly older and less agile Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. The movies had an acceptable plot, but behind every die-hard fan was one question: “Why bring it back 17 years later?”

The goal was obvious: studios want to make money. And they succeeded in their mission, the two movies collectively grossing $831.5 million. But in this pursuit of monetary gain, we have lost the integrity and value of movies.

This year, with the teaser for The Devil Wears Prada and a live-action Moana, I began questioning how many genuine movies I’ve seen in the past three to four years. I’m not saying they don’t exist, but they are harder to find. Even highly anticipated original films like The Materialist and HIM faced a lot of backlash and lacked the qualities of a “great movie.”

Hollywood has become boring and monotonous. A cycle of the same movies, plots, and actors. In a time where everything in the world is unsteady, the arts need to be the grounding force for people. Movies are unfortunately lacking in that space, but after seeing movies like Everything, Everywhere, All at Once and Anoura, there is hope for a resurgence of “great movies.” But once we stop looking at the monetary and start looking for the moments, Hollywood will truly be great.

Black Girl Beauty Brands

Representation is important when it comes to beauty. Makeup is such a powerful thing in the power it can give to empower people to be their best selves. For Black women, there is an added difficulty in finding brands that genuinely care about our melanin.

Look at the Youthforia scandal; the brand began by promoting it as makeup you could sleep in. But after releasing a foundation that was said to be for dark skin tones, which was in fact just the color black. Moments like this show why it’s important for beauty products to be made by people who understand the nuances of melanated skin. Here are three Black-owned beauty companies that know Black skin through and through.

1. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna

   

Fenty Beauty was the first Black owned complexion product I used, as well as the last. Their “Eaze Drop Lightweight Blurring Skin Tint” has been a staple in my makeup routine since I was in elementary school. The brand’s liquid foundations have a range of 50 shades, and the skin tint and tint stick have 25 shades. The shades falling under all kinds of undertones, this is the perfect complexion brand for melanated skin.

2. Pat McGrath Labs

   

A 2019 Time’s 100 most influential people pick, Pat McGrath is a British make-up artist known for her touch on some of the world’s most famous stars. This brand also has a 30+ shade range of foundations, as well as blushes and other products that are flattering on Black and Brown skin. Although this brand is on the pricey side, the legacy behind the brand is worth it.

3. Juvia’s Place

   

Juvia’s Place was created to celebrate the creativity and technique of African royalty. Founder ChiChi Eburu created the brand to find complexion products that would match her and also enhance her features, while still being inclusive of all people. This brand is known for the vibrant colors, which enhance the beauty of melanated people.

Beauty is for all, and everybody should have the ability to feel beautiful. Hopefully, this list provides solid brands for all those embarking or continuing on their journey of artistry.

Stop Forgiving Others For Treating You Wrong

I am undoubtedly a people pleaser. I like to put my own emotions on the back burner in order to appease others. Recently, I had gotten into a situation with someone I found myself growing very close to. I had really mourned the friendship when it ended. I looked back at myself, asking, “What did I do wrong?” and “How did I mess up the relationship?”. But that's just the thing, I did nothing wrong. And accepting that was nearly impossible.

Every time I had told that story, family and friends had told me I was wronged and I was being too forgiving. It never hit me until one night I was doomscrolling and came upon this TikTok.

For some reason, this hit me really hard. I thought to myself, “I am a good person.” Why was I putting myself at fault when I knew from the beginning I did nothing but be myself and put my best foot forward?

What hurt me more than anything in the situation was the questioning of my character and the unwillingness to hear my side of the story. But even with this hurt, I had forgiven the situation so easily. This is not to say that forgiveness isn’t important and that you should dwell on situations.

Rather, I think it’s important to forgive but not forget. Yes, I was treated wrong, and yes, I must acknowledge that. I cannot just go back to being buddy-buddy on someone else’s time frame. Your feelings matter, how you are treated matters, and the people you surround yourself with matter.

Everyone is a dime piece and deserves to be treated as such, so when someone has wronged you and tries to move on like it’s nothing, remember who you are and what you stand for. Respect is the minimum, and it is up to me and you to respect ourselves enough not to let others walk over us.

This week's love note is a reminder to stop chasing the next chapter and instead fall in love with the one you're in.

Ever since I was young, I would find myself thinking about the future. I would be ten, imagining my life at twenty; fourteen, imagining my first apartment. I don’t know why, but I’ve always had trouble staying in the present moment.

My mind is a combination of “what-ifs” and “imagine whens” or “excited fors”. But the more I think about the future, the less time I spend enjoying my present. When I was in high school, I complained so much about my circumstances. How I hated my school and would be so ecstatic when I finally had the chance to move on and go to college.

Now in college, I keep looking back at my time in high school, wishing I hadn’t taken those moments for granted, wishing I had just enjoyed the present. Because I kept looking forward, I didn’t appreciate the luxuries of high school. Being near my hometown friends, seeing my family every day, and being able to decide one day I want to adventure into the nearest city and just explore.

All of these things I would do without a second thought, taking them for granted. Instead, thinking of how, in three months, I would be six hours away and have the freedom to do whatever.

Three months later and six hours away, I’m reminiscing on those spontaneous trips and coming home to a house full of love and home-cooked food. But I also see myself falling into old habits. Looking back at “what was”, instead of enjoying the fact that I am in college right now, and that is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

So going forward, I am promising myself to stay in the now. Enjoy what’s around me and be appreciative of the space I’m living in. If you are looking for something to be wrong, you will always find something wrong. But the more you enjoy where you are and express gratitude for your current situation, the happier you will end up being.

I love the quote by Bil Keane, “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present”. Even as I have my doubts about the time I’m spending here in college, I have to remind myself that it is a gift to even be in this moment. And instead of jumping to what could be next, I have to sit and revel in the fact that I’m able to enjoy today.

Did an Angel Gain Her Wings? My Look into the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

On October 15th, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned for the second year after their recent revival. There was a lot of speculation surrounding the show this year, especially after the overwhelming dissatisfaction last year. There were so many opinions about the music, the models, and the methods, and today I’m going to give my opinion on it all.

1. The Models

A major thing people commented on this year was the models. We saw the return of some of the OG Angels: Adriana Lima, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Barbara Palvin, and many more. But this year, we also saw the introduction of some new Angels; athletes Angel Reese and Suni Lee made history as they walked the runway. Many people on social media didn’t like these decisions, especially regarding Angel Reese. The online opinion was that athletes had no place on the runway and their bodies do not represent that of a VS angel.

This argument came up again with influencers like Quenlin Blackwell and Gabriela Moura. Many people thought they didn’t deserve to be on the runway. In my personal opinion, I think their presence was actually beneficial; it showed that a body other than what’s typical is still beautiful. This moment was empowering, and it was Victoria’s Secret finally moving away from some of the archaic elements of the former shows. I view it as a step in a positive direction.

2. The Music

This is the part that gets a little controversial for me. I enjoyed the performances by Maddison Beer and Karol G. However, I do believe the latter went on for a bit too long. My main point of confusion was the performance by Twice. K-pop groups in general are held to a high standard of performance, so naturally, I was expecting their performances to be of the best.

I was slightly disappointed that their performance seemed a little choppy. I’m no expert in music or pitch, but this performance undoubtedly wasn’t their best. They had a good choice in songs, and their choreography was good. The vocals, however, just seemed to be slightly lacking.

3. The Looks

Now for the exciting part, the looks. I know some people did not enjoy the looks from the show. But personally, I enjoyed all the themes, outfits, and makeup. I liked that the makeup and hair team created a hybrid of vintage Victoria’s Secret and modern-day trends. The blowout was still there, but refined and more modern, the makeup was soft but still had that angel ethereality.

Here are some of my favorites from the night:

Victoria’s Secret is always going to have hate and controversy. But I feel like that is always going to be part of the show. I think Gen Z, in general, will always have something to say or to critique. But all in all, I think the show made a comeback for the better. They showed more inclusivity while still staying true to their roots. This show made me excited for what next year will bring.

How to DIY a Salon Quality Manicure

One thing I made sure to master before coming to college was the art of a cheap manicure. College is expensive, and I’m the type of person who doesn’t feel complete unless her nails are done. The best (and most cost-effective) way I learned to do this is with press-on nails. I’m going to give you my tips and tricks for the best manicure at home.

This process begins with getting the right nails. I recommend looking at Target, Amazon, or Shein for nails. For basic French tips, I would recommend KISS, but for more intricate designs, I would look for homemade nails sold on either Shein or Amazon. They may cost a few dollars, but ultimately look better and are higher-quality products. Many small businesses make good-quality press-ons; you can often find them on TikTok or Instagram.

Once you have your nails, the next important step is the application. Start by prepping your natural nails by cutting, filing, and buffing off all of the extra shine. Buffing off the shine allows the press-on and actual nail to stick better. Then prep the press-ons by filing them or using acetone, which helps to “etch” the nail and create a rough surface for the glue to stick to.

The next important step is the glue you use. I use this glue; I think it is best because my nails normally last for 2+ weeks using it, and it comes with a lot of product. Make sure to apply glue to both your natural nail and the press-on. This way, the glue sticks even better. After the glue is applied, allow it to dry completely, then you're done! Top it off with some cuticle oil, and you have a salon-quality manicure at home. And a tip is to apply your nails after you’ve showered, before going to bed, which allows the nails to bond without interacting with water. If this is not possible, just try to avoid contact with water for at least one hour after applying the nail.

Good luck with your DIY manicure. It saves time, money, and is fun! If you're feeling extra creative, you can even try making your own nails. Remember, you don’t have to be rich to treat yourself right.

So I Watched Waves…

Since Waves came out in 2019, I feel like it has been everybody’s favorite movie. I never understood the hype and put off watching it. A few days ago, I forced myself to sit down and watch the movie straight finally. I can say it was, without a doubt, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

The movie is definitely more complex in a way I’m not wired to explain, but I am going to give my totally unsolicited review of the movie. And a warning to anyone who hasn’t seen it (you totally should), spoilers ahead!

The film stars Taylor Russel as Emily, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Tyler, Alexa Demie as Alexis, and Sterling K. Brown as Ronald. The 2019 movie, written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, received 14 awards and 42 nominations. To sum it up, it’s a story about a family navigating love, grief, and forgiveness.

One of the main character’s Tyler, is a wrestler in high school who was pushed by his Dad to be the best. After sustaining an injury and hiding it from his family, it eventually causes permanent damage. Facing this career-ending injury, combined with the sudden pregnancy of his girlfriend Alexis, causes a spiral. He turns to drugs, alcohol, and impulsivity, and snaps in the climax, where he pushes and kills his pregnant girlfriend.

The second half of the story follows the aftermath of Tyler’s imprisonment. It focuses on Emily and how she continues her life, finding a healthy love, discovering herself, and how she and her family deal with the consequences of Tyler’s actions.

What I loved about this movie was the storytelling; It began by making you attached to Tyler. Showing his aspirations, his friends, and his love for his girlfriend. You begin to root for him, and when he decides to hide the injury, it’s like you want to tell him it’s not worth it. Then the way the tone of the movie shifts in the second half from chaos to calm. It’s almost as if the second half is an apology for the first.

I think it’s brilliant how the cinematography matches. While in the first half we see bright colors, sharp lights, the music is louder and more aggressive. It matches the chaos of the events. The second half is softer, the lighting is not as harsh, and the music is gentle. All of the elements of the story are cohesive to convey the same message throughout.

The script was also heartbreaking. The conversation between Emily and her father is healing because they both shed the mask of “I’m fine” and release all of their emotions. It’s like that one conversation opens up the rest of the movie for them to truly move on and forgive Tyler for how his actions hurt the family.

One thing I specifically want to touch on is the connotation that Tyler’s dad is the villain of the story. I feel like this is a complex argument. Many fathers, especially in Black culture, push their children to be better than they are. And they can only teach what is taught to them. Yes, he wasn’t as gentle to Tyler as he was to Emily, and yes, sometimes he was too hard on Tyler. But at the end of the day, you can see that he really did love his son. Even if he didn’t know the best way to express it. His pushing Tyler was an extension of his love. It’s complex and not perfect, but it certainly does not make him the villain. I think the true villain of the story is just a lack of willingness to express. If someone had just told them it’s okay to say how they are feeling, it’s okay to be sad, it’s okay to not be perfect.

There is definitely so much more I could talk about for this movie, but at the end of the day, it was definitely 5 stars. I walked away feeling touched and impacted. It’s one of those movies you can only watch once. It was gut-wrenching but also healing to my soul at the same time. I think it teaches an important lesson about the importance of mental health and the power of love.

You Need to Nerd Out

Earlier this week, as I was scrolling on Substack, I came across an article titled “Personalize everything till everyone knows it's yours” by Rori ୨ৎ. The piece discussed personalizing everything to the point where it is uniquely yours. Reading it brought to mind the TikTok trend ‘you need to nerd out,’ where people shared their niche and unique interests they are passionate about, often labeling themselves as ‘nerds.’ And honestly, it was so refreshing to see in a generation where everyone is homogeneous.

It started with a YouTube video posted by ‘the zukie show’ two months ago, entitled you need to nerd out. At the beginning of the video, he commented on how society has lost the ability to be passionate about a topic.

As you scroll on TikTok, you see the same outfits, the same songs, the same everything. People are asking what water bottle everyone is using, so they can get the right one. Even the niches are starting to blur together. The people who claim to dress differently are still wearing the same styles and aesthetics. Everything is uniform; there is nothing that stands out. As a society, we have lost the ability to stand proudly behind what we like.

Embarrassment and a desire to fit in often take precedence over excitement when it comes to discussing one's favorite anime, movie, or K-pop band. Why are we so afraid of liking something that is not normal? There is no shame in knowing every character of a certain show. In fact, it is more admirable because it makes you, you.

Being a nerd is cool—reading all the Twilight books is cool, re-watching Glee is cool. And it’s cool because it makes you different, it shows you care. It shows that although society is moving left, you want to move right.

As a generation, we need to move away from judging people for their individuality, but instead embrace it. What's the fun in liking the same thing as someone else just because? The fun is being so knowledgeable in a subject that you can proudly tell someone else, and then they can share their interests with you. Or finding a fellow nerd and ‘nerding out’ together.

Moral of the story: you need to nerd out!

Bleach, Please!

Pink! No, green! No, copper red! No wait, Magenta!

Last weekend, my friends and I decided we wanted to try something before our first homecoming: dyeing our hair. We thought it would be a fun way to prepare for the big week. I had never dyed my hair before or put any chemicals in it. So let me take you through the process of how I dyed virgin hair and kept it healthy in the process.

DISCLAIMER: I am by no means an expert. This is just what worked for me.

1. Choosing the color and style

Before any dye touches your hair, it’s best to have a clear plan. This means knowing what color you want to dye your hair and in what style you prefer. It’s also important to be realistic; you cannot dye your hair light blonde without using bleach, and you won’t achieve a baby pink hue on black hair. So be realistic with what your hair can handle. I decided on red because I knew I wouldn’t have to bleach my hair, and I opted to dye just my money pieces. Here are some more cool styles if you don’t want to dye your whole head!

2. Getting the Materials

The next step is to get the proper materials. Personally, I used boxed dye because it was the easiest option, and all the necessary materials came in one package. But if you plan on buying a dye by itself, here are some things you’ll need: a dye, 20 or 30 volume developer (depending on the color, the lighter you want to go, the higher grade developer), a bowl or bottle for mixing and application, a brush (optional) for more precise work, a deep conditioner, a neutralizing shampoo, and some clothes and towels you don’t mind getting dirty. You also need a cap to let the dye sit, but my friends and I just used plastic bags (we’re on a college budget).

3. The Process

The goal is to start with clean hair. It is recommended to wash your hair 24-48 hours before dyeing and to use a minimal amount of product. The process is simple; begin by thoroughly detangling and parting your hair. If you are dyeing your whole head, break it up into more manageable sections. Then follow the directions on your box or on social media to mix the developer and color. After mixing, apply the dye, ensuring complete saturation of your hair, and wait until the end to touch your roots. For more accurate instructions, please check your box/do further research. Once the dye is finished, shampoo twice with a neutralizing shampoo. Then, follow your routine, incorporating a hair mask or deep conditioner.

And that’s how I dyed my hair. It was fun, and I’m obsessed with the new look. If you're reading this, maybe it’s your sign to try something new. And don’t forget to give your hair that extra TLC after dyeing it. Good luck!

Perfection Is A Myth

For most of my life, I believed I had to be perfect. It stemmed from elementary school, being labeled as “gifted.” That title is heavy on the head of an 8-year-old. It makes you believe you have to live up to that idea or else you're a fraud, not meeting expectations.

This ‘gifted kid’ mentality continued throughout my life, from middle to high school, where I always struggled being less than perfect. I thought, “Everybody expects this much of me, I can’t give less.” However, this mindset was toxic and would lead to an endless cycle of burnout. I was too concerned with pleasing everyone around me that I forgot to ask myself what I wanted.

My family and parents were always there for me, but the issue was that I refused to let them. I was supposed to be the perfect daughter who could handle everything on her own. She didn't need her parents' help; she was more than capable of doing it on her own.

But this mindset is draining, and after a certain point, you have to look in the mirror and think, “Am I really helping myself?” The answer will always be no. My mother always tells me, “Perfection is a myth,” and it’s true. Even though my friends at school would say, “Oh, you're the perfect student,” that was a myth because I would spend countless hours studying and feel sad because I couldn’t understand a topic.

It wasn’t until I told myself nobody is perfect, not online, not in real life, nowhere. Perfection truly does not exist; it is the flaws in us that make us humans. Those flaws deserve to be celebrated. Life is so much greener and so much more freeing when you start to accept yourself for who you are, rather than placing yourself in a box of who you want to be, but nobody expects you to be. 

Perfection does not exist, and the quicker we accept that fact, the happier we all will be. You must water your garden for it to grow, and if you keep polluting it with weeds, its growth will be stunted. The best thing to do is water your garden and love all its parts, even the imperfect ones.

Can You Truly Separate Art From the Artist?

Disclaimer: Chic Critique is an opinion piece that reflects my personal opinion and perspective. It is not intended to be objective reporting.

In one of my Journalism classes, we were talking about Kobe Bryant and whether the accusations from when he was alive take away from his death. This is a common question when it comes to celebrities like Kanye West, R.Kelly, Bill Cosby, and many more. Can you separate art from the artist?

There’s no question that all of the names mentioned were big figures in their fields. They released groundbreaking music and broke boundaries in all industries. But they all have also had their fair share of scandals and some felonies.

In the case of Kanye West, he has amassed 24 Grammys during his time as an artist with several #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. His music is representative of a great era of hip-hop with songs like ‘Stronger’ and ‘Heartless’. But it is also true that he has been involved in a multitude of scandals. He’s made racist and anti-Semitic comments, worn a ‘White Lives Matter’ shirt alongside commentator Candace Owens, and “styled” his wife, Bianca Censori, close to nude.

Do these scandals take away from his achievements? Can we still appreciate the music he has made while also acknowledging the negativity he has put out into the world? I don’t know if it is possible, because supporting the art is indirectly supporting the artists. Every stream, watch, and click funds artists’ paychecks, allowing them to continue without facing major fiscal repercussions.

However, I do understand it is not that simple. ‘The Cosby Show’ is a staple in Black American households. A show that represents a Black version of the American dream. It’s inspiring and quintessential. But it also stars Bill Cosby, who is known to be a pedophile, and used his show and platform to prey on women. Yes, you can say you don’t support Bill Cosby, but as you watch the show, you have to acknowledge that the show is still syndicated, meaning Cosby and his family are most likely still receiving money from the show.

I think art and the artists go hand in hand, and that by supporting one, you are supporting the other. So by supporting Kobe Bryant, you are willingly pushing aside the accusations that followed him. But no person is perfect, and we all have our guilty pleasures. My personal favorite artist is Daniel Caesar, and I listen to his music with the awareness that he has made some questionable comments in the past.

The moral of the story is that there is no way to support art without indirectly supporting the artists. The most important thing is to educate yourself on the artist so you can make the most informed decisions and stand behind who you are supporting.

Managing the Mane in College

Black hair is known for its beauty. The coils, the kinks, all tell a story. Every braid is a map, and every hairstyle is a form of self-expression. It’s important as Black women to treasure your crown because it holds all the power of those who came before you. Now managing it in college is a bit of a different story.

The small showers and horrible water pressure might be intimidating to some, but taking care of your hair in college is not impossible. Here are four realistic, tried-and-true tips to manage the mane while in college.

1. Set aside time where you won’t be rushed.

All the curly-headed girls and guys know that taking care of your natural hair is not a 1-2-3 process. It’s tedious and it takes a lot of time, so make sure you are setting aside the proper time to give your hair the TLC it needs. If it’s 11 pm and you're thinking of doing your hair, reconsider because there is no way it’s going to lead to a reasonable bedtime. I’ve designated Sunday as my hair day, so I know to do my work earlier in the week or on the weekend, allowing me to avoid rushing.

2. Detangle and twist your hair pre-shower.

A college shower is a small place, and nobody likes to see strands of hair all over the shower walls. Before entering the shower, part your hair into 4-8 sections to make it more manageable to work with. Use a deep conditioner or hair mask to saturate your hair and add some slip. Then use a wide-tooth comb and your fingers to gently detangle your hair, from bottom to top. After you detangle a section, put it in a two-strand twist. Not only will this make the hair-washing process easier, but it will also make less mess.

3. Make everything easily accessible.

As I mentioned before, a college shower is a tight space. It is not the time to be reaching around searching for products, or scrambling when there is shampoo in your eye. The best way is to create a system where you can easily reach all your products. What works for me is putting my shower caddy on the shower door and having all my products facing me. This way, I easily reach for everything I need. Planning and organization really are key here.

4. Protective styles are the best styles.

The only thing worse than a short night of sleep is a short night combined with the knowledge that you have to do your hair in the morning. In college, everybody is operating on fumes, so protective styles are the best way to save both your time and your money. They require less maintenance and last longer, which means you are getting more bang for your buck. And extra points if you can do the style yourself. Some of the best protective styles are: mini twists, knotless braids, passion twists, a sew-in (careful of heat damage), and a wash-and-go.

Maintaining your natural hair in college may seem hard, but it is certainly not impossible. My wish is that these tips help you to appreciate the time you have to take care of your hair, rather than dread it.

I Deleted TikTok For One Week. Here’s What I Learned.

Waking up for a 9:30 am class is hard. Waking up for that same 9:30 am when you spent an hour last night doomscrolling on TikTok is even harder. I would always laugh or roll my eyes when my mom would blame lack of attention or difficulty sleeping on my phone. But after I spent a whole week sluggish and groggy, I thought, “Maybe it is the damn phone.”

“Doomscrolling” is defined by the Cleveland Clinic as “spending a lot of time consuming negative news” (Source). However, I would define it as being caught in a never-ending cycle of scrolling on a social media platform, lacking the self-control to end it.

I was so tired of feeling sluggish and complacent from the previous night. Therefore, I challenged myself: one week without TikTok. And to be honest, it was a pretty great week.

The first thing I noticed was that I was more social. I think Gen Z tends to pause conversation and invite their phones as a third party. While eating a meal or waiting on something, my friends and I would frequently pull out our phones and scroll through TikTok. But without having the app, I wasn’t able to. There were many times when I would type the app in, only for nothing to come up, prompting conversation. Talking about politics, the weather, and if we saw our campus crush. Either way, it was a conversation rather than endless scrolling.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve been going to bed earlier and waking up feeling more refreshed. Being on the phone before bed is already negatively regarded, and adding the constant doses of dopamine from TikTok makes it worse. But as I stopped scrolling at night, I realized I shaved off 30 minutes - 1 hour I would spend in bed before actually going to sleep.

I think the draw to TikTok all boils down to FOMO or “Fear of Missing Out”. In today’s time, TikTok feels like the nexus of music, trends, inside jokes, and all things current. It has created an idea that being without TikTok is being disconnected. But this week made me realize, it’s never that serious. And even if there was some inside joke, my friends just filled me in.

I think ultimately, deleting TikTok just made me more attentive to the little moments. The shifting trees, the leaves changing colors, and the squirrels scurrying to get their food. I realized how beautiful the world around me is when I’m not comparing it to something I’ve seen online. So if I could describe this one-week hiatus in one word, it would be: present.

The Case of Selective Journalism

Disclaimer: Chic Critique is an opinion piece that reflects my personal opinion and perspective. It is not intended to be objective reporting.

Last week, on Thursday, I was sitting in my JAC 101 class discussing the media surrounding the death of Charlie Kirk. The conversation was flowing, and the debate was stimulating. Then, “there’s an active shooter on campus,” the words came through the microphone, and everyone stilled before going into a collective panic.

We’re only freshmen… It’s too soon for there to be a threat. Tears were falling, parents were being called, and an undeniable blanket of tension covered the room. Even our professor looked worried. We all evacuated to our rooms, clinging to our friends a little tighter, watching our surroundings more astutely. The news eventually came: various HBCUs, including Hampton University, Virginia State University, Clark Atlanta, and multiple others, received bomb threats.

The irony was inescapable; not only was it 9/11, but also the day following the death of Charlie Kirk. Although the claims were found to be unsupported, there was still one question lingering. Why is there a lack of media coverage on an event that was so chilling to every student on campus?

This is where selective journalism comes into play. From the date of Charlie Kirk’s assassination to today, it has been playing in the news nonstop. A new angle is covered every hour, and every major news station is reporting on it. Yet, somehow, the news of a mass bomb threat on multiple HBCUs doesn’t cut it? Now I’m not saying Charlie Kirk’s death wasn’t important, but I am saying it should not overshadow all other news occurring right now.

Recently, it seems as though news stations pick and choose the stories they cover. In all honesty, those stories center on a predominantly White demographic. It goes back to kidnapping cases; the Gabby Petito kidnapping case was big news and eventually became a Lifetime movie. At the same time, there are hundreds of little Black girls and boys who were taken from their homes and don’t get even a fraction of the airtime.

What gives news stations the right to decide what is newsworthy and what isn’t? And why in 2025 are Black people still at the bottom of that list? Our news is important. Our trauma is important. And it does not deserve to be pushed to the bottom of the mail pile, not even receiving a footnote in the story of a White world.

I believe journalists should report the news of all, not some. The world has taught us HBCU students that our fears, cries, and pain are not enough. And we must begin to write our own stories if we want our voices to be heard and our stories to make the front page.

The Autumn Audit: How to Romanticize Autumn in College

Autumn leaves are falling, fireplaces are crackling, and I’m spending $10 on a drink from Starbucks. Either way, autumn is one of my favorite seasons. It brings a kind of freshness in the air that makes you realize how beautiful it is to be alive.

This is my first autumn in college, and as someone who likes to do the most when the season changes, here is my top four guide on how to romanticize autumn as a college student.

1. Create an Autumn Playlist.

I’m a big believer in creating a playlist for every single moment. Life feels like a movie when you’ve curated the perfect soundtrack. And nothing beats the feeling of walking in the rain with a moody indie song playing through your headphones. Here are some of my favorite fall songs:

• “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star

• “Autumn in New York” by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

• “Reflecting Light” by Sam Phillips

• “1979” by The Smashing Pumpkins

• “Back to the Old House” by The Smiths

2. Indulge in Fall Drinks and Snacks.

This one is a little tricky because it’s a universally known fact that college students are broke. But the occasional Pumpkin Spice Latte (emphasis on the occasional) or Apple Cider from your cafe of choice can transport you into the world of fall. Also, if your school has any pumpkin or apple-themed food items, be sure to give them a try; taste buds are a window to the soul.

3. Consume Media That Fits The Mood.

Watching movies and TV shows that give off Autumn energy is another great way to immerse yourself in the season. I know most college students are watching TV anyway, so why not watch something that’s going to help romanticize the season? My fall big three are: Gilmore Girls, Coraline, and The Vampire Diaries. All three give off such comforting fall energy that feels like a hug on a chilly autumn day.

4. It’s Sweater Weather. Dress Like it!

Just like The Neighborhood song says, it’s “Sweater Weather,” so pull out those big knit sweaters and UGGs. Dressing up like you’re Rory Gilmore or Elena Gilbert really helps you to feel like you are embodying fall in its fullness. There’s no need to go out and buy things; just arrange the items you have to represent whatever fall may mean to you.

I hope these tips can help everyone romanticize the autumn season. And remember to look around and take it all in because every moment is special.

Maybe I’m Dorothy

I moved in for my freshman year at Hampton University on August 18th. So far, I’ve experienced three weeks of classes and one week of new student orientation. As someone who had a “sheltered” high school experience, college is providing a much-needed change.

In high school, I often felt like I should be doing more, both academically and socially, in all aspects of my life. I often walked around my halls feeling like there had to be something better out there; there had to be a place where I belonged completely, where I wasn’t the single black dot in an all-white painting.

The moment we drove into Hampton University and heard the cheers and joy of the opening committee, something inside me had clicked: this is it, this is where I’m meant to be. Being surrounded by people who welcomed me with open arms was like a band-aid on all the past judgment I received.

This feeling only continued as my time here has passed. I found friends who not only looked like me, but also understood me when I talked about the hassle of taking out my braids. The environment helped to rekindle my passion for writing. I’ve been influenced to take risks on things I would normally shy away from. I feel like, since setting foot on campus, I have been a whole new person.

As I walk towards the Emerald City of success, I think Hampton University is my yellow brick road.

There is one celebrity, however, who has been the face of many controversial ads. Actress Sydney Sweeney recently partnered with American Eagle to advertise a new denim collection, but their marketing plan sparked more controversy than celebration.

The Denim Dilemma

Sydney Sweeney took the spotlight by storm when she was seen in the HBO series Euphoria. She portrayed a complex character, and her acting skills shined through. Following the show, she’s faced more negative publicity. In 2022, the actress organized a surprise birthday party for her mom, where guests wore red MAGA-style hats reading “Make Sixty Great Again”. After this, many speculated she might have an affiliation with the Republican Party.

More recently, Sweeney collaborated with a men’s personal care brand, Dr Squatch, to create a new soap bar line that was said to include a small amount of her bathwater. The controversy was that the soap was marketed towards men. The ad is essentially sexualizing an actress who opened up about not wanting to be oversexualized and finding it ‘dehumanizing.’

The American Eagle ad that garnered so much attention was said to be a bold and flirty marketing move.

The tagline of the campaign was “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” The intended wordplay there is replacing “genes” with “jeans”. Aside from the wording of the campaign, the camera also pans up and down her body, including a shot of her buttoning and zipping her jeans while lying down.

The Rip in the Jeans

Many find the issue with this campaign is that its wording is similar to the wording of eugenics and white supremacy. One of the main things is the choice of representative: in an ad campaign about jeans, American Eagle chose a blue-eyed, blond-haired actress. The connection between the choice of actress and the concept of having ‘great genes’ echoes old ideologies, essentially insinuating that blonde hair and blue eyes are the ‘proper genes’.

The ad’s timing comes during a period of heightened societal tension in America, marked by changes in DEI initiatives and racial polarization. Dr Dee Duffy, in an article for RTE, argued that the ad is essentially “repackaging conservative values into more palatable ways”. The Trump administration has been transparent in eliminating diversity, and some find that the ad plays into these ideas.

Before the campaign’s release, American Eagle’s chief marketing officer Craig Brommers said that “Sydney Sweeney is the ‘It’ girl of the moment, and she is helping us create the ‘It’ jeans campaign of the season. Sydney really encapsulates American Eagle.” Some other companies, such as Jennifer Sey, CEO of XX-XY, weighed in, saying that the campaign is “A play on words. Nothing more.”

Distressed Denim

It can be argued that the ad was inspired by Brooke Shields’ ad with Calvin Klein Jeans that aired in 1980. The ad was similar, featuring the 15-year-old putting on a pair of jeans and playing on the words “genes” and “jeans”. However, this ad also came with a lot of controversy that parallels Sydney Sweeney’s ad. Brooke Shields was just 15 during her campaign that seemingly sexualized her as well.

What stirred the pot for this campaign was the involvement of politics. News came out that Sydney Sweeney registered as a Republican voter in Florida before Donald Trump’s second presidential win. And recently, conservatives have praised the campaign for its seemingly “anti-woke” advertising.

When asked by a reporter about his thoughts on Sydney Sweeney and her ad, US President Donald Trump had this to say:

The involvement of the US President in the ad is turning it into a significant media event. An August 8th Forbes article stated that American Eagle’s stock went up over 20% since the campaign broke, and “The Sydney Jean” modeled in the ad has sold out. Despite the controversy, the campaign has been financially helpful to American Eagle.

I thought it was Just Denim…: I thought it was denim—but is it? Although the advertisement is just one example, it comes during a time when the political and societal climate makes it more relevant. It’s up to you to decide whether the ad was fashion-forward or a faux pas.

We all grew up watching Disney Channel and creating this fantasy version of high school in our heads, where everything and everyone were perfect. But plot twist… life is not a Disney Channel show.

Not So Raven

Going into high school, we all had an idea of what to expect, walking through those double doors expecting to see a mirror of what was onscreen.

My personal favorites were K.C. Undercover, Jessie, and Liv and Maddie. The common thread among these shows was a perfect friend group, a main character who could juggle extracurricular activities while still being an A+ student, and the ideal high school love life. And of course, we can’t forget the fairytale prom.

Watching these shows led us to believe we would conveniently bump into a group of people on our first day of school, and—BOOM—a friend group was formed. There’s always the quintessential quirky best friend who manages to be extremely funny and always able to drop everything and come to the aid of their best friend (you’re literally 16—where are your parents?).

These shows follow characters like K.C. Cooper, who made our young, impressionable minds believe that we needed to be straight-A students while juggling our outside responsibilities (and maybe being a secret spy). I can speak for myself when I say I walked into high school with high standards for myself, thinking, “If my favorite character, K.C., can do it, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to”.

The most popular of them all was the idea of prom season. Movies like A Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program made us believe that prom was a guaranteed magical night. There was a prince charming, the girl was wearing the perfect dress, and she was, of course, voted prom queen (duh!).

Growing up, we all had an idealized vision of what high school was supposed to be, inspired by years of watching Disney Channel. Now… what was high school really like?

My Spin-Off

I started high school around three weeks after moving to New Jersey. I was born and primarily raised in New York for the first 13 years of my life. I was scared to begin my high school journey. I knew nobody, and the town I was moving to was known to be close-knit. It was the kind of place where you went to elementary, middle, and high school with the same group of friends.

I distinctly remember crying on my first day of school as soon as I got into my mom’s car. “It was terrible,” I told her. “I made no friends. I’m going to be a loner all of high school”. It might have been a touch dramatic, but it’s truly how I felt at that time. I thought that because I didn’t find my friend group on the first day, I was going to be miserable for the rest of my time in high school.

To be honest, I didn’t find my friend group in the first month or even the first year of high school. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I had solidified my friend group, and that summer, I confirmed to myself I had found my ride-or-die best friend. It didn’t happen on Disney time, and for the longest time, I thought that meant there was something wrong with me or how I went through high school.

As I look back on my high school experience, I realize that just because it didn't go the way I imagined—or others imagined it—doesn’t make it any less magical. I found my magic in the moments when I would laugh with my friends down the hallways, or feel a warmth in my chest when I could dance and be free with my bestie at prom. High school was magical, not because it was a Disney Channel movie, but because it was my movie—my life. And the fact that it’s uniquely mine makes it more magical than anything Disney could produce.

Umm, Where’s The Music: The music is in the memories, the friends, and the experiences. When you block out all the background noise and focus on what’s in front of you, you realize there was a beautiful symphony all along.

Can you tell what’s wrong? Now I know! I was missing the secret ingredient: authenticity!

When the Recipe Goes Wrong?

Although Love Island began its first season with a cast that seemed genuinely there for love, as the show grew and became more popular, so did the participants. As time went on, it became clear that being on the show was synonymous with a boost into fame and the opportunity to shift it into becoming an “influencer.”

This idea is only growing as we see the age of influencers seems to be upon us. According to a study done by Influencity, 3% of the total US population could be considered influencers. This equals around 10.5 million people and counting. And as Love Island increasingly attracts people with influencer goals, the line between love and branding begins to blur.

However, the audience is growing tired of the lack of authenticity, as seen recently with Season 7 participant Cierra Ortega. Ortega is known to be a friend of season 5 Love Island participants Johnnie Olivia and Kassy Castillo.

As the show went on, many viewers speculated that Cierra was “coached” by her friends and former cast members. There are several clips where she is seen reciting lines from previous islanders (S6’s Leah Kateb and S3’s Genny Shawcross). These references could just be paying homage to these islanders’ iconic moments, but many viewers see it as copying and, ultimately, a lack of authenticity.

This inauthenticity can be connected to the negative backlash Cierra has received. Many on social media have scolded her for “studying” and being “coached” before entering the villa. Ironically, the homework seemed to hurt more than help.

When the Recipe Goes Right

Two Islanders known for their authenticity are Season 7’s Amaya Espinal, dubbed ‘Amaya Papaya’, and Season 2’s Cely Vazquez. While Amaya’s authenticity helped her win the prize money, Cely’s helped her maintain her relevancy 5 years after her season originally aired.

Cely Vazquez has been honest from the beginning of her Love Island journey, being unapologetically herself. During her time on both Love Island and Love Island Games, she showed her full personality and portrayed true emotions. And even after leaving the villa, she has publicly shared her journey with dissolving her facial fillers and her journey to sobriety.

This authenticity and honesty have paid off as Cely still retains her “fame” from the show. She was a constant feature of Love Island: Aftersun, and she was dubbed the Season 7 “social ambassador”. Even after her season ended, she still has 1.2 million followers on TikTok and 778K on Instagram. And even after so much time, she is still positively associated with the show. This just proves that her authenticity on and off the show made her a likeable and admirable figure.

Season 7 winner Amaya was well-loved from the beginning. Unlike most other Love Island cast members, she had nobody running her social media pages to help her increase her likes and following. Meaning all of the engagement on her social media was purely organic and based on her performance during the show and nothing else. She began the show with less than 100K on Instagram followers and now has 3.8 million. How?

It’s simple, Amaya was true to herself throughout the whole season. From her bombshell arrival in the beginning, she was her bubbly, loving, and kind self. Even when the other islanders, especially the men, tried to tear her down for her loving nature, she stayed assured in herself, not changing. She became known for her singing sessions with self-assuring quotes.

The fact that Amaya was unapologetically herself helped her to steal the hearts of the viewers at home, as well as win the prize money with her partner, Bryan Arenales.

Why? 🤷‍♀️

Now, what is “Sof’s Scoop”? It came to me at 1 am on Wednesday, July 23rd. I was lying in bed, bonnet on, trying to be productive and connect with fancy people on LinkedIn. I thought to myself:

How can I elevate myself and my portfolio? How can I make myself more interesting?

I came up with two solid options: I can stay up late and create a world-changing, never-before-seen, earth-shattering non-profit. Or (the far superior option) create a blog where I yap about things I care about, a.k.a. law, media, and pop culture.

I am an aspiring Entertainment Lawyer attending Hampton University in the fall (go pirates 🏴‍☠️!). As a kid, I found myself drawn to media and pop culture. I think it was because I admired the luxury that celebrities seemed to have. The freedom to go where they want when they want, and to wear a $500,000 outfit without a second thought (give me 10 years, I’m manifesting).

But really, I think it’s because I didn’t have much going on in my life. So I gravitated towards the extravagance of the limelight. I would reach for People magazine every time I went to the nail salon, ready for the latest batch of celebrity gossip. And when I listened to the news, I always tuned in extra intently when they were discussing the newest movies or the latest album being released.

As I’ve grown older, this interest has morphed into a passion. A passion to preserve and protect the entertainment industry. But it has also developed into a wide range of opinions regarding all aspects of the industry. I see Sof’s Scoop as my place to comment on it all.

This is a space where I spare my parents from my midnight rants about the “downfall of Hollywood” and pour them into this blog. Whether I have 1 subscriber or 100, this blog is more for me than anything else. Just a place where I can express my opinions and have fun doing so. A place where I can channel my inner Carrie Bradshaw and feel like I’m gazing outside of my penthouse window, taking in the NYC skyline (again, give me 10 years to manifest).

And a little bit more about me.

My favorite genre of movies is rom-coms (I’m a sucker for a dramatic rain confession), including The Proposal, A Walk to Remember, and The Notebook. I also enjoy movies that make you think. My recent favorite: Past Lives (this wound is still particularly fresh).

But I enjoy all genres of movies, from action to horror, to obscure Indie films with absurd metaphors (cough cough Bones and All). As long as it seems interesting, I’m down to watch it.

I have recently joined the ranks as a Letterboxd reviewer, and I take my new position very seriously.

I think the arts and media are the saving grace of humanity. They bring us together, they educate us on important topics (if we are willing to receive it), and they challenge the norms. I love every kind of art: books, movies, music, and television. Though I must confess, I’m still working on not getting bored in art museums (it's all just fruit, right?).

And of course, the most important thing: My favorite ice cream flavor is cookies and cream (duh).
