Recently, I went to a birthday party for a dear friend.

It was a memorable night and not only for reasons you might expect…

If I’m being honest, I’ve been having a challenge finding the energy and momentum to go out these days.

On this particular day, I'd describe my mood as generally good, bright though I had some “legitimate” hesitancies for getting out for several hours because my cycle was beginning (sorry about the TMI but IYKYK!)

But it wasn't even that - I just wasn’t feeling particularly social.

Being social, as an introvert, requires a kind of rallying to the connection for me. It's not because I have social anxiety or I’m generally shy. It's the energy required to meet each interaction authentically because I’m not the biggest fan of small talk.

Then there’s the layer of how to answer my least favorite question, “How are you?"

I couldn’t be sure what would spill out or what I’d say because honestly…I’m not even sure what my answer is these days.

I am guilty of this, though. I ask people all the time, “How are you?” I'd love to remove this question from my vocabulary. But I still engage as a way of social politeness, an introduction, or a way into conversation. But what do we ever learn from it?

It’s rare to find the right context when we ask the question. Even more rare is to have someone ask you “how are you?” with the intention of deep listening, holding the space for whatever you might share, and offering sincere empathy and attention. That’s not a criticism, it’s just that we’ve taken this deep question and lessened it to a fleeting question that is the equal of “hello.”

This is especially true at a party full of party games, great food, and music.

So I’m at the party, doing my best to keep things light and then - as I knew would happen - a couple I know asks me, “so how are you? What’s been going on?”

Oh geez…I start scrambling in my mind…find something, find something…party appropriate. Upbeat. Keep it light, keep it light.

But instead what came out was… “well, to be honest, it’s been a pretty intense several months.”

No Angela, flag on the play – not that! Lol.

I did catch myself enough to then only say, “you know life, family stuff, and things going on in the world. I’m doing well but Life has been life-ing.”

Whew, saved.

I was trying to spare this lovely couple and leave it at that. Even apologizing for offering a bit of a downer of a response at a birthday party.

Except they came back with an empathetic response that wasn’t the typical kind of response I’ve been hearing lately that tends to regale the disheartening state of the world these days.

Instead, they shared specifically that they understood. They asked a personal question about my mom, opening a great conversation about aging parents.

For several moments, we engaged in a conversation amidst the festivities. The location of connection was deeper than surface, and in that I realized…we are all going through something in some way whether we say it or not. This couple's response opened the door to a more meaningful exchange for all of us.

Life requires at times that we perform certain roles, and by perform I don’t mean that we move through those roles without substance. (though we do that too!) I simply mean that we show up, for our roles in life, not always leading with what’s most intense upon our hearts.

It was refreshing however, to be able to simply state and hold what is real and true without it turning it a therapy or coaching session or trying to “fix"something.

To listen with love to each other, to hear and take in what everyone is saying without taking on what they are sharing.

To value connecting with people as they are, without the masks or projections, while winding our hips to the Buju Banton songs on the playlist.

Maybe this is life right now.

Holding the light and the shadow.

The love and the concern.

The grief and the possibility.

The celebration and the sadness.

Maybe this moment in life is growing our capacities to hold both ends of the pendulum with greater and greater amounts of love and clarity.

Maybe it's teaching us about how to simply be with each other right where we are and find connection within all life's experiences.

Maybe if we begin with our ability to be with ourselves in compassion—right where we are, whole—we can risk the vulnerability of sharing that with each other.

What a jam-packed time it is been dear ones.           

How are you???

I would add one more “e” word to the list…Emotional.

It’s been an emotional time as well.

Can you relate??

Sometimes, the days feel so full that when I come to the page to write, 

so many thoughts run to the front of the line that what comes out is a jumbled mix of incoherence that has felt more like musings for journal pages rather than a public piece, let alone a love note.

But like most things or people that I’m in long-term relation with – I notice the muse circles back again. 

Sometimes sooner, and sometimes later but I’m learning that loving, whether this craft of writing, lovers, family, or friends – is an activity word.  

It means whether foreground or background, 

as solace or in jubilation,

through the waters murky and clear and

through forests dense and majestic – 

when you look to your left, I will still be walking nearby.

My writing feels like this long-term companion that just when I think it's over…what I have to say has left me,

my muse drops in with coherence, power, and urgency.

And I’m grateful.

As I walked outside this morning noticing visible changes of season – the sun a little lower in the sky, the breeze a hint cooler

She, my muse, reminds me that love moves in cycles.

And just like that…I’m compelled back to writing a Sunday Love Note.

Lately, it feels like change and transformation are all around.

Personally, I've had some people dear to me pass away, recently,

I notice my parents aging,

I am aging.

These things have me realizing just how much of a cycle this life thing is and it has me reflect on being present with these cycles. 

It brought to my attention the above Maya Angelou’s quote. 

And running the risk of sounding trite or too not to sound existential, more and more its clear to me that its not what I'm able to buy, do or accumulate that matters - it's how I've been able to be present, with the gifts I have, doing what I came here to do, and loving well that people will remember and that matters the most to me.  

Some days though, staying present with life feels like a heavy lift.

So heavy that all I can do is tend to the basics of caring for myself and those immediate living things and mundane tasks. 

Recently one of the mundane tasks included taking my car to be serviced.

I’d noticed that the headlamps went out and so on this day it felt like something I could do. "New lightbulbs, not too complex," I thought. 

After the initial diagnostic, the mechanic told me that not only did my car need new replacement headlights, but the make and model of my car had received an upgraded light system years back, and it seems mine hadn’t ever had that done.

It involved installing a more expensive and powerful light and a mounting kit to not only secure the light but also to hold and manage the increased power and wattage of the light.

Ha!

I love a good metaphor. All I could think was – that checks out as a for my life, maybe for the collective as a whole.

The past things have dimmed or gone out and you can’t simply replace it with the same mechanism. Instead, a more powerful illumination is needed but to install it in our consciousness, or our lives – there’s some things inside that need to transform and change, a more powerful, stable mount to hold it.  

But once I invest, in the case of my car hundreds of dollars, the lighting upgrade will not only cover more space with a broader and brighter

spectrum, but it will also last likely the life of my car.

You would barely notice her if you weren’t looking for her but I’d heard about her years ago and I went looking for her.

She stands 40 inches tall, a cast bronze sculpture with copper patina created by Mexican-American sculptor Robert Graham around 1992. She stands upon a pedestal, at the base there are 3 crabs.  The pedestal is at the center of a pool of water that cascades down the a set of steps.

She is located in downtown Los Angeles right across from the Central Library.

I was unable to find much written about her. No Artist notes or commentary about why here, why her.  Why did the Artist choose this name?

Nothing. Which in a way I love because it does what art does…

It invites our own creative insight, thinking, discussion and interpretation.

When I first came upon her, I admit I wished I had a bronzed shawl to cover her exposure. She seemed small amidst the towering, erect buildings surrounding her.

She seemed vulnerable, all alone on the pedestal, her nudity cast a shadow of an auction block, echoes of past emotion from bronzed women being sold.  

Gazing upon her tears started forming.

As I looked upon her face however, it was not downcast, nor in pain. Her eyes are closed, her gaze is inward like she’s in meditation. Her hands are cupped, palms up and positioned near her womb.

I noticed that I wanted to place a narrative upon her, but She had something else to share with me. After all I am the one who’d come looking for her. So I sat down nearby.

It was the middle of the afternoon. People on lunch breaks moving through the plaza that connected their offices. Talking on phones, listening to music, caught in their thoughts about what’s next in their day.

And we just watched them, She and I – Source Figure and me.

I could say, look at this dwarfed figure so small the “source” of all these buildings around her, it was a weight, an obligation, an imprisonment, a confinement.

She kept asking me to keep looking deeper.

I noticed – her almost serene expression. Eyes closed but the way her golden patina copper caught the light, she almost glowed. She had a radiance.

She faces the doors of the public library, a tall art deco building built in 1920, a national monument filled with a type of “knowing.” The Source Figure stands in connection to that, directly opposite.

Perhaps her inward glance is of deep internal knowing. A knowing that is not derived from the external physical world with its concrete monuments of illusory power.

She is within a pool of water, life itself, an amniotic cosmos, the greatest natural resource on our planet, the very thing we need to survive, our beginnings within our mother’s womb.

Her size just under 4 feet, she is power, not size.

The three crabs at her feet perhaps the earthly form of this knowing and power of three sister moons. 

Her body strong, tone, taut, unashamed in her full feminine form.

There’s an erotic nature to her. The curves of her body a juxtaposition of all the very tall erect office buildings surrounding her.

She, fully her in form, unfazed, steeped in a consciousness called Source. The aperture, her cupped hands pours forth.  She is the gift, the Creatrix of life.

You would barely notice here if you weren’t looking for her. But sometimes its easier to move when no one is watching.

She invites me into her reality.

Into a knowing that is deeply feminine, erotic in nature and found through an inward glance so strong that the skyscrapers are like ant hills in her sight and wisdom.

Revealed,

Golden,

True power.

Sourced within,

Prolific in her creation.

She is Source Figure.

I find the beginning of the calendar year interesting.

As someone who follows seasons and cycles, I’ve rarely felt a ‘new beginning’ or a shift on January 1st and it seems random, manufactured in a way. 

Instead, I tend to feel a change on Dec 21st, which marks the Winter Solstice, a shift in the light or on the Lunar New Year, when the moon begins its new annual cycle (Feb 10th this year). Or even March 21st, the beginning of the new solar cycle, the emergence of Spring and the newness it brings.  

On these days, I feel connected to the energetic shift within these natural cycles. In January, I most often feel like I'm in the midst of something or replenishing rather than at the beginning of something.

But that said, there’s something about the collective agreement that something new is happening when we all agree to start writing 2024.

So all that I guess just to say…Happy New Year All! 

I also bring it up because while we collectively agree the new year is here, if you are still feeling like 2024 is off to a slow start…take heart.  You are not lagging behind, or the only one.

Instead, I would suggest that you release the expectations or ‘should’ that come with this time and simply be with, become curious and interested in whatever it seems Life is presenting to you or asking of you. 

It is when we become present with what is, and where we are not our wish of how we'd like it to be - we find the most meaning  and peace in life. 

This season my practice of being with my life, means that I’m not lettign expectations drive. (It’s a practice!)

Whether with myself, in my relationships, celebrating my birthday, interactions with family and in my relationship to my ever-changing body.

When I start to experience lethargy, anxiousness, and the sensation of unease I begin to make inquiries into my heart and body.

I ask:

“What is here?”

“Is there something that this moment/this feeling in my body is bringing for me to see?

“Am I able to clearly look at it or am I running from it?

“Is there anything preventing me from embracing this moment fully as it is?”

“Is there a fantasy of expression that I’m chasing? Or by-passing something?”

“Is there an unacknowledged desire that this moment is bringing to light for me?” 

Considering these questions, or ones like it, brings us into an intimacy with ourselves - an intimacy where we are honest with ourselves, and looking at those places within us that are unexamined, denied, hidden or unconscious, what some refer to as our shadow. 

This kind of honest self-inquiry, when approached with deep and tender compassion opens the way to living your life present with things that fulfill rather and conscious of what depletes you. Then you can make adjustments from an intentional not reactive way.

It’s brave living, courageous living and I invite you to try it this season. 

The cool winter temperature and dark evenings create the perfect moments for becoming intimate with Self.

Brew a cup of your favorite tea, light a candle, an incense – create an environment of warmth that invites those quieter parts of you into conversation.   

Look upon any insight you have with the most amount of tenderness that you can muster. We can be so harsh with ourselves as we’re growing along our paths.

In this season of Self-intimacy and getting to more present with life, treat your inner exploration as you would offer when learning about a lover – with exquisite attention, willingness to learn, and affirming intent.

How have you been faring in this season of shorter days and cooler weather?

This time each year, I never know what to expect or how I'll feel.

It’s not a surprise to me when I feel a little down as the winter and holiday season approaches.  Sometimes, like last year, I feel festive and social, other years the total opposite is true – I feel melancholy, recluse.

Over the years of working with seasonal moodiness, I’ve come to know what I need and what responses tend to work best. 

This year, right after my birthday I began to feel the dip in my mood. At first I thought it was the natural dip that can happen after peak experiences.  But around the same time I felt really challenged by some of the physical changes in my body that come with midlife. (hint: perimenopause!) 

The timing turned what might have otherwise been a smooth season into an almost theatrical level existential dread with the long dark nights of fall as the perfect backdrop to the scene.

One thing however that I’ve come to rely on during this time of year is the practice of taking a PAUSE.

To pause means to stop activity temporarily.

When we suspend the action, the movement, the doing – what we find is Being.

Being with ourselves.

Being with life as it is.

Healing what aches.

Hearing inner guidance,

Feeling our heart’s tender desires

Receiving clarity about the way forward.

Peace within our minds.

I’ve learned that a pause is not just OK in life - its healthy, necessary.

To pause in life can take many forms depending on what is needed. It can be a moment in the day, for a season or a lifestyle change.

For me this season I decided to take several life pauses. 

I paused the pace of social outings after my birthday to regroup, to integrate the peak experiences.

I paused on some of my habits - social drinking, sugar, meat to cleanse and feel the rhythms of my body without stimulation.

I paused on mindless eating, I’ve been intermittent fasting daily, because I can see how I’ve created an unconscious layer of protection to the sensitivity that I often feel.

I paused on sex to call all my energy back in and to deepen and re-attune my erotic energy.

And as you all know I even paused with the Sunday Love Note in the last couple of months to clarify when and how I want to share what’s most important to me. To listen to my inner muse.

What I’ve learned as I allowed myself to pause, slow down, integrate,  is that pausing brings an intimacy with myself that I can only describe as lush, exquisite, sumptuous.

Pausing creates the space for an “at-one-ment” an atonement  with Self.

The original meaning of atone is “to come into harmony with,” and we do this by looking and seeing who we deeply are.

When we atone within ourselves we see and accept our needs,

our perfect imperfections,

the things we feel afraid of,

the things we long for,

the random things that bring us joy,

the tender undersides of our being…

To know all these places, to embrace them all and offer acceptance and love to all of them is, in my view, the greatest gift we can give ourselves. The gift of Self-atonement, or inner harmony.

Times of pause then creates a sacred environment to restore your inner harmony. 

As the end of 2023 approaches, and we experience the shortest day of the year this week, we are offered a natural time to take some time of pause, to nurture, to nourish, to become intimate with what life is offering and asking of you.

For some, pausing can illicit feelings of angst, anxiety,  a discontent because you’re not doing “enough.”

Or you may be someone who feels that your pace is naturally slower so pausing activates feelings of falling, maybe down a hole of depression, inertia that feels deep, dark. 

Or maybe with the holidays approaching you scoff at the idea that taking a pause is even possible.

I invite you to consider pause like something as necessary as the moment between the in and out breaths. The place that allows life to continue. And remember it's temporary.

Maybe it’s as simple as tea in the evening or taking a morning walk while visiting family, or 2 minutes of prayer just before you get out of bed.

There’s always enough time to take a pause, you are worth a moment of inner harmony.

May the moments of pause you take this week be restorative and filled with creative insight.

One version of this scripture uses the word enemies but I like the word adversaries, because it can mean beliefs and habits of our mind, such as this term I learned from one of my teachers, “accepting breadcrumbs.”

Accepting breadcrumbs refers to an inequity in reciprocity especially in relationships. Ever since I heard it, it’s felt deeply confronting. I guess because as I came to understand what it meant, I could see how much gathering of crumbs to create something I’ve done in various areas of my life.

It’s one of those revelations in life that you have that brings up a feverish nausea,

a queasiness that unsettles one’s mind,

an interruption like the abrupt scratch of the needle on a vinyl record, mid-song.

Wait what!?

Buried beneath the justifications, “legit” reasons for behavior, unspoken desires, even compassion – there are times I find something that points back to something personal within.

Through one lens it is a super power – an ability to see beyond appearance, to see the essence of a situation, what’s seeking to emerge or the love/God presence within a person.

Through another lens, what some would refer to as the shadow expression, is accepting less, positioning myself as less than, or holding back expression, feeling unworthy of or unable to accept more.

I can point to the social structures in the world that created a programming where I, Black and a Woman, have received subtle and overt inferior positioning. In this paradigm, where roles are “played out” I am playing the “part” to feel uncomfortable in my full expression. Too be seen as taking up too much space to ask for what I truly want, selfish to receive a full portion of my desires or greedy to open in full reception to my desires.

Can you see the pattern? Anything “full” is what I should push back from keeping me from nourishment.

The “programming,” and I mean that deliberately, literally,  –  is to accept what life gives me, to find ways to get by, make do, forgo nutrient.

Many of us live our lives unaware of how deeply these patterns are running in the background, how deeply within they run – embodied in our voices, body language, interpersonal dynamics.

But then there are those moment that occur, an awakening, an interruption, big and small where a tear in the veil happens and the sunlight of the true soul shine through.

*needle scratch on the record*

An inner flame ignites, your sight clears and you see, maybe for the first time – who you really are.

Resplendent

Radiant

Unique

Neither inferior nor superior yet incomparably precious.   

You desire..long, yearn for a nourishment on a soul level.

From here, we may have a tendency to demonize or criticize another’s offer to you, making it an insult. Instead, I’d invite you to shift your attention from other’s offering to first looking at how our table is prepared.

We can’t control what another does, but we can with this new awareness of who we are prepare ourselves and our lives for the bounty within the new reality we are creating.

So I’m curious  - what you think it looks like for your table to be set and prepared for the beloved of your own being to come forward and life’s bounty to rain upon your life?

SHE is our inestimable power, insight and creativity.

SHE wants those deepest treasures and passions within you expressed.

SHE is seen in the eyes of an elder, the silence of forests, the ripples of streams and wants to be known, felt, and trusted intimately within you.

SHE is YOU.  

Your most radiant, expressed self, living a life offering the gifts you’re meant to offer.  

I love astrology because I believe, like other elements in nature we are connected and affected by the cycles and movements of the planets. Though I do find myself less than satisfied with the limited, often western/European imagery and mythology used to describe these celestial happenings. 

During this cycle it occurred to me that this energy of Venus is so much more. 

What we are really referring to is an ancient, archetypal, original energy – the feminine principle.  Described and known by many other names to the ancient stargazers.

She is known as Auset, Isis, Oshun, Ishtar, Inanna, Sekmet, Eruzulie, Nana Koole and many more. She is known by a 1000 names.

Her call to me is to create a space where women, perhaps a woman like you, can gather, to tap into what’s most true, potent and desirous within them and be supported in bringing it to the forefront of their lives.

To do so without shame, without the too-much-ness, without having to do it perfect.

To create a space for her to be brilliant, all the magnificence she is, expressed and imperfect without fear of retaliation.

The Call was urgent, for it is the imbalance of the Feminine Principle in our world that I believe, is the cause of so much suffering…and the transformation begins with one Woman’s courage.

Maybe you are one of the Women…

If you’ve followed me for awhile you know that I look to nature as a guide and move with, not against the rhythms and cycles of life. 

Today's Lunar Eclipse is in Scorpio, and I'm feeling it.

A total lunar eclipse is a time the Earth moves in between the Moon and the Sun, casting a shadow on the moon.

It’s possible that you may be feeling or seeing the emergence of hidden things, in your life or in your surroundings. We are certainly seeing that on our collective world stage.

This week I’ve felt down a few days, shaken-up and I couldn’t figure out why.

I tried to track it to something that was currently occurring in my life – couldn’t find it

I tried to ignore it, dismissing it as not getting enough sleep or not enough exercise – didn’t work

This feeling was railing inside me, and I knew it was time to tend to it because my experience with myself in these moments is that the “messages” become louder and louder. A tap becomes a shove. 

What I found was some “old” emotional material, stuff that I dismissed as having already worked through it.

With the deep assistance with a trusted Practitioner, I was able to see those last vestiges that needed to be forgiven and composted in my life.

It wasn’t an acute sadness I was experiencing but rather a dull ache in my emotional body that was asking me to do the final steps to let it go, and to re-open those deep inner recesses of my heart.

And this is what I mean about moving with the cycles of life.  It’s not that the eclipse is “making” me unearth shadowy material.

But rather, it’s a celestial time, when there’s an energetic influence that allows for things hidden to be seen.

I choose to work with it, and you may too. 

Whether a relationship, in your vocation, with family or a part of your identity - if it feels like something from the past, or a type of discontent is surfacing “out of the blue” it may be an indicator that there’s some vestiges of an old experience still hanging on, it is the perfect time to tend to it by clearing things out.

The natural law is, “energy is neither created nor destroyed” so whatever the experience – the energy of it is simply changing form.

Let It. 

Just as plants need the rich soil to thrive, and that soil is composed of decayed material – we all need a fertile environment to grow and thrive. 

The richness of our life is drawn from experience, including what we release and compost.

Journal about it, empty out that ‘junk drawer,’ take an Epsom salt bath, take a long walk, cut the dead leaves off your plants, talk to a trusted Practitioner/Advisor – whatever  your practice - hold the intention of “clearing out”   

I’ll be in the Garden of my Soul this week, adding to the compost heap and preparing for the blooming to come.

As I write this, I’m sitting at a little table in a northern California town tucked amidst rivers and forests. 

A familiar sound of stillness is in the air, like the moment between the in and out breath.

A natural creek runs softly through a moss-laden rocky bank, the water glistens as it ripples over rocks even though the sky is overcast.

A slight breeze moves through the limbs of a set of young trees in the foreground, their movement appearing in sync – expanding and contracting, I am reminded to breathe.

There’s a quietude to my nervous system, noticeably so.  

The noise of the city where I live has a constant soundtrack of contrast, so much aural and visual input all the time but here, the activity feels rhythmic.  

These kind of moments are precious to me. A valuable respite especially now with all the discord, conflict and loss of life that is occurring in our world. It can feel hard to trust and to feel a quietude in the heart.  

In these brief encounters I experience, Timeless Awareness. 

It's where inside the linear nature and progression of time, there's the experience that  “all of a sudden”  there is plenty of time and supply in all ways.  

Mystics say you touch the eternal. 

Attention of mind and body is the key to its mystery.

The mind becomes clarified making it ready for insight, the body recalibrates allowing it to be a clearer channel and receptor for your hearts desires.  Meanwhile the little creek simply ripples along…

Sounds idyllic right? It was AND within a few days I experienced a very different type of timeless awareness…

Just hours from boarding a flight for an extended trip away,  I had to accept that I wasn't feeling well and I would need to postpone my departure. 

I’d been planning this trip for months.

All of a sudden I found myself inside another  in-between place. An unplanned place.

I had a packed bag and an empty fridge. An apartment ready to be left, yet I’m still inhabiting it - I felt suspended in time.  This kind of timeless awareness was far from the peacefulness of the forest creek and its magic.  I wanted to be on my trip.

It would be easy to label this an unfortunate experience, bad even. Except I also know that everything has a shadow, another view point. 

In this timeless awareness, there is still the touch of the eternal – yet this time,  it is through acceptance of what is (though admittedly a slow acceptance!), what I decided is best for myself and for others I would have interacted with. 

My life has shown me numerous times that no experiences or good fortune that is for me, will be held from me no matter the day I arrive. 

Its a reminder that sometimes my timing is not Life's timing - and I can fight against it or I can open to life's Grace, to risk trusting it to glisten and ripple along over the rocks in my life. 

I choose to live in Grace. 

As you can imagine, it was easy to experience spaciousness during a peaceful moment but I believe that the practice in those moments is for the times when it becomes difficult to do so.   

This week I invite you to practice spaciousness.  Whether its taking a walk in nature, meditating,  enjoying a unrushed meal with friends, playing with your babies or lying in your lover's embrace  – let your attention land on what is present, engage all your senses, and accept what is perfect about the moment just as it is.

All month I will continue to explore and write about what we experience during the  “in-between” situations of our life.

As I mentioned last Sunday, the theme for the month of May is Emergence.  Each week I’ll share about things that arise as we step into the newness of being in life or in an area of our life. 

Have you caught the glimpse? What’s emerging for you? 

This week I went to the Bridgerton Experience, an immersive event where you are invited to dress up and immerse yourself in the sights and scenes of the popular Netflix series.

So, imagine everyone dressed up in period outfits, complete with gilded gold, lace, gloves, ornate hairstyles, and the like. There was something for all the senses – the music, the refreshment, the portrait studio..

At one point, the Queen, in full-show-costume-regalia came out – a caramel-complexioned Black Woman, portraying Queen Charlotte just like in the actual show.

It is not lost on me how the centering of a Black Woman by Shonda Rhimes and her team affects my interest in this period-influenced imaginative world, despite certain historical truths of this time period – but I think that’s another topic.

I attended in full costume also– tiara, evening gloves, and I even blew out my very curly hair into a well-coiffed afro just like the actual actor had in Season 1. (spoiler alert - yes, there's a photo below)

But what does this have to do with emergence? 

For the 90 minutes of this immersive experience, I let myself be in wonder, awe and outside of my day-to-day world. To play in the irreverent, to try on other possibility.

What if I wore my hair in a blowout afro every day? What energy does that bring out of me?

What if I was someone who wore a tiara and full-length gloves when I went out – or carried myself as if I was.

The “What If” is a powerful phrase that invites in the imagination, the possibility.

It is the special sauce, the lubricant of emergence.

What If brings us into the imaginal – where we begin to see things not as they are, but we catch the scent of what they could be, and play lets us explore in the body. 

There is so much happening in our world. So many things where it seems like play, enjoyment and pleasure is frivolity and wasteful.

Serious times, call for serious action.

I don’t disagree AND…we can become so consumed by the seriousness of the time, the issue at hand, and the complexity of the condition with which we find ourselves that we are spinning in the issue, not imaging another possibility or solution.

This is where play, enjoyment and imagination enter in.

Solely thinking of possibility could be fantasy but play brings into the level of embodiment

I invite you to sprinkle in some play into your week.

Do something that is enjoyable, youthful…for no reason.  No matter how big or small.

You could go all full immersive experience, but you could also swing on the swings,

take out that old hobby,

go on a bike ride and get your favorite treat or

go on a play date with a friend.

No agenda, no task – not as avoidance – but as simply…Play.

Don’t worry if this doesn’t come natural to you. It doesn’t for me – try it anyway.

Remember we are in the emergence of something new…the adult mind, needs it to be right or perfect.

The youthful mind wants it to just be.

Let Yourself Be.

Is it just me or are any of you finding it awkward, uncomfortable, or weird to be back in connection and relationship after the last two years of wearing masks and social distancing? 

Are you fully back out in the world? Inching out? Still mostly home?

What are you noticing as you emerge back into community and intimate connection? 

As I wrote last week, I’m beginning to get out more and as I do, I’ve noticed sometimes the social awkwardness that comes with it.

Little things like when someone gets on the treadmill right next to me or hugging people not in my former bubble, or greeting new people with a hug or handshake. 

It is as awkward as a teenager’s first kiss.

Not because of the newness of the circumstance but I am noticing a newness in me.  

I’ve changed.

The shifts in the last two years reconfigured my core and foundation. I know that sounds extreme and dramatic, but let me share what  I mean:

• I broke through a deep unconscious pattern of unworthiness that had been running my life.

• I healed connections with my family and other relationships that allowed me to increase my unconditional expression of love.

• I grieved (and still am) the way I have unconsciously participated in the cultural paradigm that undervalues Black people and people of color and I am deep in the unwinding of the ways I have internalized it.  

• Self-loving and nourishment is no longer something I get to when I’m done with the important things.

• I discovered myself as a Writer and prioritize nurturing my creativity and its gifts.

I know myself in a way that I didn’t just two years ago.

And so as I am emerging into the activity of the world, I look similar yet feeling completely different on the inside. 

It is both exciting and sometimes awkward and tiring because of the attention it asks of me to make sure I am updating my situations as I go along so I don’t fall into old habits.

It is easy to be impatient in this kind of emergence and growth - wanting to jump quickly to result, to bypass the discomfort of things forming, to just get onto the next phase of things.

That would be however, like rushing something that’s been slow-cooking.

It takes the time it takes to grow, to birth, to emerge.

So in what ways can we be with ourselves in life in the emergence?? What can support us as we allow ourselves and others to be new, to meet them again like the first time because none of us are the same.

Can we hold the ichy tension of our own full and authentic emergence?

This month I’ve decided to take on this question as a monthly theme.

Each Sunday Love Note I’ll explore an aspect of it, and every Wednesday I will go live to talk about an aspect of it in my evening prayer and reflection practice group.

I’ve been going out a lot more lately.

In some ways I feel like a ‘familiar-newcomer’  in the place I’ve called home for almost 15 years. There’s an awkwardness of rediscovering what interests me and trying new things and finding new places. 

I notice I still feel drawn to live music and experiencing art,  one of my long-term past times. I especially love venues where the interlude between artist and audience is intimate.

On Friday I saw one of my favorite local bands in a coffee shop and on Saturday I attended an exhibit and panel for an artist-led collective who is piloting a project between artists in Los Angeles and South Africa.

Sitting in the audience I felt the tingle of the thaw in my chest, the parts of me quietly cocooned over these last years were melting open, overflowing out of my eyes as warm, fresh tears.  

It felt good to be among people (even as introverted as I am). 

Meeting them, letting them meet me as I am today.   

Seeing things, familiar things, again for the first time.

It is not that LA has become so dramatically different – but I have.

As we change, moved dramatically at times by life’s joys and grief, our perspectives and values shift. When we are present to what’s shifted inside us, we invite life to reveal something previously unexperienced. 

Yet when we are fixed in perspective, holding on to what was - we can find ourselves living in the shell of the experience, in an outdated version of our lives, which can have things feel flat, lackluster or melancholy.

This applies to ourselves, our environment and also includes our intimate relationships.

Are we interacting with the person as there are? Or are we interacting with the phantom of who they once were, our fantasy of who we wish they were or could still be? Too often we hold on with fear instead of looking freshly at what is, and being with what is. (I’ve been guilty AF of this one!)

I think fundamentally most of us want to be seen. To be known for who we are and appreciated and loved there. When we can offer our attention we step into the present connection.  

This time of emergence is an invitation to offer fresh sight to the place we live, the people we interact with and ourselves.

To do this we can ask ourselves – is what I’m seeing habitual? What are my current desire and interests? Am I meeting this person, this place in the present moment? What is here that I previously haven’t seen?

This last question elicits a curiosity, an acknowledgment that there something new to see, a great practice to keeping things fresh and alive.

This pairs well with last week’s invitation – to Adjust the Pace because when we take a breath, and look with curiosity we will undoubtedly see something we hadn’t seen before.

Don’t take my word for it – try it. Let me know what you discover.

When faced with things that scare me, most often my approach is to turn toward them – to shine the flashlight on the monster under the bed.

However, there are some exceptions …and one HUGE one is dental work

Since 2004 I’ve been literally terrified of going to the dentist, let me explain…

I don’t think it'd be exaggerating by saying its actually dental trauma.

In 2020, when I finally got myself into a chair after so many years – 

the clinical white office, 

  the heavy vest they make you wear to take x-rays, 

    that slurpy sound of suction, 

        and the zoom of the foot pedal operated drill… 

As I sat there waiting - I could feel my heart racing and the perspiration breaking through my skin pores because of my rising body temperature.

When the hygienist walked into the room, I burst into tears – and in case you don’t know this about me…that is not a common scene for me.

The depth of how activated I was surprised me but it shouldn’t have.

I’ve had A LOT  of dental work done. Starting as a child I’ve had teeth ankylose teeth extracted, wisdom teeth removed, plus an extra one – I forget why..

I had braces for two years as a teenager - then again as an adult.  The second time was accompanied by jaw surgery where my jaw was wired shut for 6 weeks and it took 3 months to heal.

That was in 2004. My dental care after that time has been spotty at best – negligent is more accurate.

So sitting in that dental chair as the kind-eyed hygienist approached me – I shouldn’t have been surprised that I totally lost my shit. 

It would not have worked if someone told me to “think positive” or “don't worry, it'll be fine” and rushing me to “push through it”.

I needed an approach that met me where I was because on a scale of 1-10, I was at a 25.

To rush over the involuntary tremors of my body and its messages of my emotions is to abandon myself and I've learned that being embodied means that I don't negate, dismiss or otherwise villainize its needs and expressions.

So what DO we do then? 

When we find ourselves facing something with a flood of emotion or sensation – of any type, if it's more than you can stay conscious for…Slow it down. 

First, we can compassionately accept our emotions - all of them. Unacknowledged emotions don't disappear when we ignore them, they become repressed and show up later - just like my flood of tears in the dentist chair. 

Next, get clear about your needs -  physical and emotional.  

I decided to go to a dental clinic I'd heard good things about. It is a teaching clinic where there is teaching alongside treatment and care. It takes longer and things are a lot slower – but that was perfect for me.

(shout out to the UCLA dental clinic – Drs. Mina, Damien & Lobo! My new BFFs)

This allowed the perfect environment for me to ask for help and what I need, while staying present.

I think it takes a certain kind of courage to face what you're afraid of.

To find your way in and through it

To befriend the fear, to move with it

Within the very word is the way to work with it…

Feel the Emotion, Allow time for a Response. 

It's been a journey to unwind my fear of the dentist. It's ongoing so I can't tie it up in a tidy bow, but I can report that my gums are now in great shape.

And I will, for the third time in my life have an orthodontic treatment....but this time it's from a totally different place.

Where is life asking for you to adjust the pace – slower or faster?

Maybe you need to slow down because you are missing the details or repressing your emotions or overriding your intuition.

Or maybe you need to speed things up because you are getting lost in the fog of indecision, inertia or inaction.

This week I invite you to gently and Observe Yourself (link) and play with the pace of things.

I was running on a treadmill – bouncing and sweating…

So what’s the big deal you may wonder…

Well, it was the first time in at least 3 years that I took a run.

I had do many excuses, and at times valid reasons to avoid all the bouncing and such. 

(shout out to my curvy, ample bosomed women out there! Y’all know.)

So imagine my surprise when I stepped on to the treadmill the other day, started my warm up, and as I was starting to get my power walk vibe going…I felt this spark within me…and I just started running, well ok jogging but still!

And here’s what I remembered. In high school I was a track athlete.  During that 4 years of year round training, we focused a lot on form. Practicing our form, the explosive energy, breathing and that mindset. 

I ran the 400 meters, it is one part sprint and one part stamina.

This is not to say that I was running at 400 meter athlete pace yet…what I noticed was my body’s remembrance of form, of breathing, of mindset was all there. 

I observed how my breathing paced itself, how my arms naturally had a type of practiced swing, my core was engaged and the part of my foot that I started to run on. 

I did all this without thinking – somewhere within me, somewhere forgotten by me was the one who knew exactly what to do -  my Inner Athlete and– she was simply waiting for some time and the right conditions to strut her stuff.

I noticed that taking a little chance on her, listening to the urge to “just run”  flooded me with joy and delight.

In just that small moment I went from someone who doesn’t run to being in the practice of running.

The shift can happen, the story I’m telling myself…interrupted…just lilke that.

And so I posted a video! Why? Because I think we don’t share the little micr-growths we have along the way – and that to me where the joy of life resides.  Running again a big deal to me. And one of my teachers, Rev Michael Beckwith taught me, “when you’re willing to be embarrassed, you’re willing to grow”  

I am willing.

And I wanted to let you know I stuck my toe in the water of shedding old stories of changing and growing and it feels just fine. 

Could there be something, even something small within you…Something you “used to do” or that you’ve always wanted to be. BUT….

Or maybe there’s been a life experience that has defined you and so you can’t ever….or won’t…

This week’s invitation:  Be Willing to Grow & Change

It’s the season for it, you have elemental support in emerging from the dormant sleep of any potential, desire or thing you’d like to release.

If you have the courage to take a step towards it -Great! Go for it.

And it took me over 3 years to get to this moment – so if that’s you…what if you just named one of the stories of limitation you have going. Or expressed the thing you’ve always wanted to try but feel too…fill in the blank  Just shining the light of attention on it or asking “what if”  – is a step.

Consider me a confidante – and if you’d like, message me about it what you discover. There is deep medicine in being witnessed.

This week I want to talk about when things are upsetting, activating

The nomination hearing for Ketanji Jackson Brown and the “slap” at the Oscars have both affected me in different ways.

As a Practitioner of myself, I know that anytime I feel in reactivity, there is something, often profound to uncover in my emotions or reactivity.

The Judge Brown hearing brought to the surface all the times I’ve felt like her:

Striking that balance between professional and being a human as people challenge my integrity because of their issues.

Inside of her nomination hearing, I felt my own wound of visibility.

In the “slap situation”  – one of the things I was most activated by was something I read about Jada and how not only is she the one with the medical condition that she is working with in her life, she was the butt of a joke on a global stage and now also has to deal with repercussions of what happened. 

Inside of this situation, I touched my own wound of feeling teased for my looks and pushing aside my experience for a more pressing need and experience of another.

I’m not saying that either Judge Brown or Jada Pinkett-Smith are feeling what I am feeling.

Instead, I’m suggesting that inside my thoughts and feelings about this situation or any situation that disturbs my peace – I find a wounding, my wounding, something that has caused me pain.

There’s an impulse to want to express that upset – we saw a lot of opinions.  Or to rise above, move away from or by-pass the pain of a wounding  - avoidance.

But I prefer the way Bayo Akomolafe talks about it…he says –

“Within the wound is where we make sanctuary.” 

I create Sanctuary for the places inside me that are unhealed.

I don’t take that to mean that we set up permanent residence there, what some describe as being the ‘victim.’ I see it as the place where the alchemy of healing can occur.

If I can stay with myself and the places that hurt inside me, I can tend to them with love and attention. 

We can do the work of un-learning and re-parenting, forgiveness, amends, bodywork, letting go, setting boundaries, being in community, therapy or reconciliation – whatever is needed. 

We can then transmute what hurts and release the stored energy and let it form into something creative, unexpected in our lives.

I don’t mean to suggest this is a simple, I do mean to suggest that its possible.

THIS WEEK’S INVITATION: Observe Yourself

I wonder if there is something that is disturbing your peace today or this week.

This week, my invitation is to be in loving awareness of yourself. To notice, what disturbs your peace and lightly ask yourself…”what about this is within me is upset about this?”

The “within me” keeps the inquiry from blaming the situation or another. It also is a reserve of one of the deepest places of personal power – personal responsibility.

This week on my social media channels, I’ll share some ways I work with things that are bring loving awareness to the things that disturb me.

Let’s create sanctuary together.

I have an obsession. 

A hidden delight I've had for years that most people don't know about me. 

I am obsessed with closets, 

all kinds - their contents, their (dis)organization, the stories they contain and clearing them.

I've helped family members and my closest friends tackle some daunting closets – as if  cleaning closets is one of my love languages.

There’s something deep, raw, intimate - dare I say sexy about those dark, hidden places that we all have – whether physical, mental or emotional.

It’s courageous of others to let me into their closet. To look, with care, at the different things they’ve stored away, to understand their meaning and to decide what to let go of.

And I don’t just do this for others - I walk my talk.  

As Spring approached, I felt the discontent that for me signals it is time to look into my own hidden places.

These last two years I’ve been in a deep cocoon and finally it is time to open the windows and clear the way for what’s emerging.

Since the Equinox it’s been a flurry of activity - purging, clearing, donating, trading, selling…eliminating all the things that do not feel in alignment with who I am and who I’m becoming. 

This weekend I took on my storage unit. A dark, distant place full of all kinds of things left unexamined - for years.

These kinds of things cause energetic loose ends in the back of our minds and drain our energy.

But it’s not just old books and closets that drain our energy. Unresolved issues, unforgiveness, and unexpressed desires also stifle our energy.

When we want to clear emotional stagnation,  it takes a similar kind of effort – intimate and raw -  to open the door of our hearts and minds and get in there to see what no longer serves us and where we can let go to create more space. 

When there is more spaciousness in our lives – it is an invitation to creativity, your desire and the delight of the unexpected.

- GO IN WITH AN INTENTION

Today I wanted to go through my books and pull out all the ones I no longer want or see myself using. This allows me to not feel overwhelmed by the task, which usually leads to procrastination, sometime for months. 

- SET A TIME CONTAINER

Last time I went all in I stayed too long and did too much and injured my back, it took weeks to feel better. This time I set a 90 minute limit.  

- SEE IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH

In the end I had two boxes of books to donate and another box of papers to recycle.  I scanned the books on Decluttr and got them ready to get a bit of money for some of them and dropped off the other box to donate. D O N E.  

There is still more to go with old CD and memorabilia but for the day’s project, I went all the way through so there would be no energetic loose ends at the end of the day and enjoy that feeling of completion. 

One note - the day's project was easily manageable for me but if were more daunting I definitely would have enlisted help. That could easily be another tip - Enlist Help, if you need it. I have hired amazing space organizers and can share my recommendations. 

This time of year we begin again.  The new lunar year, the beginning of the astrological cycle, and today, March 20th, we welcome the Spring Equinox in the northern hemisphere. 

I can’t help but simultaneously see that there are many things happening in our world that appear to be the opposite of aliveness, new beginnings

This is when I go to nature. Where nature steadies me, teachers me, guides me - I encourage us all to tune in to Nature as a Teacher. 

Here in Southern California, we are seeing the beginnings of bloom of the trees, wildflowers the wisteria is returning. The juxtaposition of this beauty against the backdrop of the heartbreak and grief in the world gave me pause. 

It was as if blooming was nature's rebellion.  It reminds us that in all circumstances - nature continues, life continues and then I heard a whisper:  Bloom Where You Are

It is as much a prayer, a reminder, a sustaining word as it is a call to action, an encouragement and an affirmation that life is inherently good. That within all of it, no matter what it is and even if we can't see it in the moment -  there is something…(w)holy. 

For those of you on fire with life, emerging from the last two years with the fire a passion of the fire red as an Amaryllis flower.  Bloom Where You Are! 

Your call to action, your creativity, your fire, your un-stoppable-ness, your un-fuck-with-able-ness  - is holy.  Remember to hydrate, tend to your roots and keep nutrients in your soil.  Your voice and vision is holy. 

For those of us where the days sometimes seem shrouded, where the circumstances are a little heavy or where the heart may feel broken or things aren’t quite where you’d like them…

Bloom Where You Are - like the lotus whose single bloom emerges from the murky, dank waters of growth - all that we move through in life is holy. 

For those of you who are unsure - perhaps the seedling still in the soil, tentative - Bloom Where You Are.

Late summer blooms are important too - when some of us grow weary, we look to you to hold the torch and continue the push - Your pace is holy.  

It is your nature to Bloom. 

It is our nature as a collective to Bloom - to open more and more to life, in greater, more full, more beautiful expression.  

Everyone can bloom, and each of us has a unique cycle of growth.

So, whatever you traverse, whenever you must rest - through the challenging days and conversations, amidst grief and heartbreak, through the social mire of our day - gather that which inspires you, hold close those you feel connected to, allow wisdom and a new vision to enter and…

BLOOM!

Rituals.

MY FOUNDATION

Ritual is a part of my everyday life. 

It is one of the ways I express love to myself and my life.

I have daily rituals, weekly rituals, lunar rituals, seasonal rituals, sex is a ritual, I make ritual for specific things I’m moving though…the list goes on. 

The rituals of my life is the way I make my life sacred.  It is the way I connect with nature and the deeper energies within me and around me. 

Ritual takes me out of the push and pace of the fullness and activity in my days and attunes me to the deeper, more subtle rhythm and flow. 

One of my teachers, Elder Malidoma Somé taught that ritual - be it community, family or individual - liberates energy. 

In my sojourn with him, I reconnected to my indigenous heart. The conscious memory of which was lost to me by a passage across a body of water.  Through ritual it's re-membered and its Essence in me seeks connection and harmony with life around me. 

The ritual of my life tethers me to this essence - and liberates that which is truest about me and life.   

Rituals are different from my to do lists.  The activities from my lists are in service in to the deeper elements of my life that I touch through the rituals, not the other way around. Said another way – My Essence guides me, my “to-dos” serve that.
