Dwaraka Tirumala often known as Chinna Tirupathi, is the next most prominent Venkateswara temple in Andhra Pradesh, after Tirumala. The Venkateswara Swamy Temple here is located on the Sheshadri Hill. As per the Sthala Purana, the temple dates back to the time of Dasharatha, the father of Shri Rama, and gets it’s name from Dwaraka, a Rishi who did severe penance to Vishnu, covered with an ant hill, to be blessed by worshipping at the feet of Vishnu.

For devotees who could not visit Tirumala, going to this temple is an equivalent. As per the Brahma Purana, Aja the grandfather of Rama, is believed to have worshipped Venkateswara during his wedding. Apparently on the way to the Swayamvar of Indumati, he had passed by this temple, but had not worshipped the Lord, in his haste. While he managed to win the hand of Indumati, he had to fight an intense battle with other suitors at the Swayamvar. Realizing that the conflict was due to him forgetting to worship Shri Venkateswara, he proceeded to the temple, and did the Puja there.

One of the features of this temple is to see two main deities under one Vimana Sikharam. One of the deities is a Swayambhu believed to have been discovered by Dwaraka Rishi himself, and shows only the upper part, with his feet hidden.

However other saints felt that the worship of Shri Venkateswara, would not be complete without doing the seva to his feet, and hence installed a full murthi of the Lord behind the first one. It’s believed that the smaller deity represents Moksha, while the larger one represents Dharma, Artha and Kama. The Kalyanotsavam is celebrated twice a year here, for the Swayambhu deity, its in the month of Vaishaka, while for the larger deity it’s in the month of Aswayuja.

Facing the sanctum sanctorum on both sides of the main entrance, are two statues of Dwaraka Rishi and Annamayya, while on the top of the main door, you find sculptures of the Saptarishis. Around the wall of the sanctum sanctorum, you have the sculptures of the 12 Alwars carved into it, and there is a Deeparadhana Mandap in the Pradakshina path. There are smaller shrines for Anjaneya and Garuda in the temple complex behind the Dwajastambham.

Four gali gopurams flank the temple in 4 directions, the Southern gali gopuram is the tallest of the lot, with 5 stories. The hill known as Sheshadri is shaped in the form of a huge snake, it’s believed that a Naga ruler Ananta, carried Mallikarjuna Swamy to the top of the hill, and Shri Venkateswara is located on his tail.

Most of the current temple was built between 1762-1827 by the local chieftain Dharma Appa Rao, while the golden jewelry, silver vahanas were donated by Rani Chinamma of Mylavaram royal estate. There are steps leading up the hill to the temple, which have the Dasavataram sculptures flanking them. The Sudarshana Pushkarini is located in the Southern end, that has two bathing ghats Chakra Theertham, Snana Theertham.

The temple can be reached by road from Rajahmundry, Eluru, Tadepalligudem, while the nearest Railway Station is at Bhimadole around 15 km away, located on the Vizag-Vijayawada route. The temple is worth a visit, with it’s towering gopurams, exquisite sculptures and pleasant surroundings.

Panchamukha Hanuman, is a representation of him, showing 5 faces, in different directions. It is based on the incident in Ramayana, where Hanuman assumes the form to kill, Ahiravana, the king of Pathala, and Ravan’s brother.

During the battle with Rama, as Ravana’s fortunes waned and his mighty son Indrajit fell, desperation drove him to summon Ahiravana, the sorcerer-king of the underworld. Ahiravana, cunning and ruthless, vowed to turn the tide by capturing Rama and Lakshmana alive, offering them as sacrifice to Goddess Mahamaya.

Vibhishana, ever watchful, sensed the danger and warned Hanuman. “Guard them well,” he urged, “for Ahiravana is a master of disguise. Trust no form, no face.” Hanuman, steadfast in his devotion, stood sentinel at the brothers’ resting place, thwarting every attempt of the demon who came cloaked in deception.

But Ahiravana’s trickery was relentless. At last, he assumed the guise of Vibhishana himself. Hanuman, momentarily deceived by the familiar form, allowed him entry. In that instant, the sorcerer seized Rama and Lakshmana, spiriting them away into the depths of Pataal Lok.

Thus began the fateful descent , a clash not only of strength but of cunning, where Hanuman’s devotion would be tested against the shadows of illusion. It was here, in the underworld, that the mighty Panchamukhi form would emerge, a divine answer to Ahiravana’s dark sorcery.

When Hanuman realized he had been deceived, his heart burned with resolve. He vowed to Vibhishana that he would descend into the netherworld, rescue Rama and Lakshmana, and destroy Ahiravana. With unshakable devotion, he plunged into Pātāla Loka, where the sorcerer’s palace rose vast and forbidding, guarded on all sides.

At the gates stood Makardhwaja, a strange guardian , half vanara, half fish , born of Hanuman’s own essence when a drop of his sweat had fallen into the ocean and been swallowed by a makara. Though bound by duty, Makardhwaja was, in a way, Hanuman’s son. Father and son clashed, and though Hanuman overcame him, he spared his life, recognizing the bond of destiny between them.

Pressing forward, Hanuman entered Ahiravana’s labyrinthine palace. There he learned the secret, the demon’s life was tied to five lamps burning in five different directions. To extinguish them all at once was impossible for any ordinary being. But Hanuman was no ordinary guardian.

Summoning divine power, he manifested as Panchamukha Anjaneya , five faces radiating in five directions, each embodying a different deity’s strength.

• Anjaneya (East) — bestower of Ishta Siddhi, fulfillment of cherished desires.

• Karala Ugraveera Narasimha (South) — granter of Abhishta Siddhi, protection and victory over evil.

• Mahaveera Garuda (West) — source of Sakala Saubhagya, prosperity and auspiciousness.

• Lakshmi Varaha (North) — giver of Dhana Prapthi, wealth and upliftment.

• Hayagriva (Upwards) — master of Sarva Vidya Jaya Prapthi, wisdom and triumph in knowledge.

With this fivefold manifestation, Hanuman extinguished the lamps in a single moment, breaking Ahiravana’s power. Armed with ten weapons, he struck down the sorcerer, shattering the darkness of illusion and restoring Rama and Lakshmana to freedom.

The five faces are said to represent Hanuman’s control over the five senses , sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Just as he extinguished the five lamps burning in different directions, he symbolizes the extinguishing of distractions and illusions that arise from the senses. In this way, Panchamukhi Hanuman becomes a reminder that true strength lies in discipline, awareness, and mastery of the self.

A very beautiful couplet in Kamba Ramayanam, explains the significance here.

The son of one of the five elements( Vayu or wind) , crossed one of the five elements( Sagara or Ocean, Water), through another of the elements( Sky), and met the daughter of another element( Sita, being the daughter of Earth). And then burnt down Lanka by Fire( another element).

It is said that Hanuman appeared in his Panchamukhi form to Shri Raghavendra Swamy, the great saint of Mantralayam, during his penance. At that very spot, the Panchamukhi Anjaneyaswamy Temple was established, sanctifying the place as a site of divine vision and spiritual power. Devotees believe that Hanuman’s five-faced manifestation here was not only a reminder of his victory over Ahiravana, but also a blessing to Raghavendra Swamy , affirming protection, wisdom, and mastery over the senses.

There are 5 forms of prayer to him, aligning with the five faces of Panchamukhi Hanuman.

• Naman (Salutation) → Anjaneya (East) — bowing in reverence, seeking fulfillment of desires (Ishta Siddhi).

• Smaran (Remembrance) → Narasimha (South) — constant remembrance of the divine, granting protection and victory (Abhishta Siddhi).

• Keerthanam (Chanting/Glorification) → Garuda (West) — singing praises that dispel obstacles and bring prosperity (Sakala Saubhagya).

• Yachanam (Supplication/Prayer) → Varaha (North) — heartfelt petitions for upliftment and wealth (Dhana Prapthi).

• Arpanam (Offering/Surrender) → Hayagriva (Upwards) — surrendering the self, attaining wisdom and mastery (Sarva Vidya Jaya Prapthi).

Panchamukhi Hanuman form is often seen as embodying not just power, but the very essence of devotion described in the Bhagavad Gita.

“He who acts for me, who is engrossed in me, who is my devotee, who is free from attachment — he reaches me.”

• Anjaneya (East) → He who acts for me — symbolizing service and action dedicated to the divine.

• Narasimha (South) → He who is engrossed in me — fierce concentration and unwavering focus on dharma.

• Garuda (West) → He who is my devotee — devotion expressed through protection and upliftment.

• Varaha (North) → He who is free from attachment — strength to rise above material bonds, granting wealth without clinging.

• Hayagriva (Upwards) → He reaches me — wisdom and knowledge leading to union with the divine.

Thus, Panchamukhi Hanuman is not only a warrior who defeated Ahiravana, but also a living embodiment of Krishna’s teaching , showing that devotion, discipline, and detachment together lead to liberation. His five faces are a reminder that the path to God is fivefold: action, absorption, devotion, detachment, and realization

Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha were both sons of Rishi Kashyapa and Diti. It’s believed they were conceived at a very inauspicious time during dusk, and both turned out to be fearsome, evil Asura.

Hiranyaksha was killed by Vishnu in the form of Varaha, when he abducted Bhoodevi, and took her into the ocean, plunging the three worlds into chaos. Furious at his brother’s death Hiranyakashipu swore revenge on Vishnu and did intense penance, finally Brahma appeared, and asked him for a boon.

That is when Hiranyakashipu asked

“Grant me that I not die within any residence or outside any residence, during the daytime or at nighttime, nor in the ground or in the sky. Grant me that my death not be brought about by any weapons or hands, nor by any human or animal. Grant me that I not meet death from any entity, living or nonliving created by you. Grant me, further, that I not be killed by any deity or demon or by any other organisms and divinities.”

Brahma granted him the boon, and Hiranyakashipu felt he was as good as invincble, as no one could satisfy those conditions. And conquering heaven, made the Devatas his slaves, and began to harass, persecute all Vishnu devotees, locking them up in dungeons, torturing them.

Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlada was however a devout Vishnu bhakta much to his father’s chagrin.When Hiranyakashipu was unable to change his son’s mind, he ordered him to be killed. However at every attempt to kill him, Prahlada was saved. He even tried to get Prahlada burnt alive through this sister Holika, but it was she who ended up being burnt to death.

When Hiranyakashipu asked Prahlada where Vishnu was present, he replied he was omniscient, and found everywhere. He pointed to a pillar, and asked if his Vishnu was there, to which Prahlada replied “Yes he was and will be”.

When a furious Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar, the fierce form of Vishnu, Narasimha emerged, who was neither man nor beast. It was twilight, neither day nor night. He picked up Hiranyakashipu and took him to the threshold, neither indoors nor outdoors, and placed him on his lap, neither earth nor sky. And finally he killed him with his nails, tearing apart his stomach, which were not weapons.Vishnu had outwitted Hiranyakashipu as Narasimha, getting over and each every conditon in the boon granted by Brahma.

Chenchus are one of the oldest tribes, residing in the Nallamalla forests and making a living from hunting, gathering. One of the main deities they worship is Lingamayya, a native form of Shiva. They also have a close connection with the Srisailam Temple, believe that Brahmarambika was none other than Parvati born among them. And hence they consider Mallikarjuna Swamy to be their son in law.

Chenchus living around Ahobilam too have the same belief about Narsimha Swamy. Apparently after slaying Hiranyakashipu, Narasimha wandered the world in a rage, when the Devatas were worried that it could destroy the world, Lakshmi took birth as a Chenchu lady, and it’s believed that Narasimha Swamy, attracted to her, was pacified and married her. So they treat him as their son in law.

Like most tribals, Chenchus are into nature worship, Bhagwan Taru is the sky deity who watches over them, while Garelamai Sama is the forest deity. And they worship Maisamma, Pedamma too.

The Konda Reddies who inhabit the hilly forests adjoining Godavari river again mostly worship nature, the forest deities. Here each village has it’s own set of guardian deities, and they also worship Shiva, Durga too.

The Savaras located mostly in the forested areas of Uttarandhra adjoining the Odisha border, consider Lanjia Saora, as their supreme deity, the creator and guardian of their tribe. Thakurani is the mother earth, who is worshipped during harvest seasons with offerings of grain, fruits and animal sacrifices.

There are also shrines to Jangubai, a tribal girl turned deity, whom they consider to be their protector. Sonum is the spirit of their deceased ancestors, who continue to guide them.

They have a connection with Puri Jagannatha, Vishwavasu who first worshipped Neelamadhaba, the predecessor to Jagannatha, was from their tribe. The Daitas and Soaros at Puri Jagannatha Temple, claim descent from the Savaras, and that in a way accounts for many of their tribal rituals and traditions being adopted in this temple.

The Bagatas who are located in the Manyam region mostly, combine their native tribal deities with traditional Hindu Gods. There are two sects Vaishnava, Shaiva and apart from that also honor the ancestral spirits, nature deities. Here each Bagata clan has it’s own symbol and associated deity, eg Hathiyar( Elephant), Belhar( Monkey). The famous Dhimsa dance is performed by this tribe.

The Valmiki tribes again located mostly in Godavari forest regions, consider themselves as descendants of Maharshi Valmiki. And they worship Rama, Sita and Hanuman. The Rama temples at Vontimitta and Bhadrachalam are their main pilgrimage centers. And they follow the traditional tribal worship of forest deities, ancestors.

The Gonds who are the largest tribe in Telangana, have a rich pantheon of deities. Gondin Deo is their guardian deity, who also protects their community, while Persa Pen or Bara Deo is their supreme creator God. Kupar Lingo or Lingo Pen, is associated with culture and fertility and his story is narrated in the Gond epic Lingo Kuda.

Bhimsen is a divine hero known for his strength and wisdom, while Danteshwari is the forest goddess, revered for her power to ensure prosperity.

The Angadevs are fierce ancestral spirits of the forest, believed to be the children of Kali Kankali. It’s believed they were imprisoned in the Kachchargardh caves and rescue by Pari Kupar Lingo, making the caves a sacred pilgrimage site. Bada Deo are ancestors who act as guardian spirits.

The Koyas found in the Godavari basin region, are mostly into agriculture and cattle rearing. Bhoomi Talli or Mother Earth is their main deity representing fertility, and is worshipped during agricultural cycles. Again here each clan has their own deity, worshipped in sacred groves who guide them in all aspects. They are also famous for their bison dance.

The Lambadas or Banjaras are found predominantly around Warangal, a nomadic tribe, their main deity is Sevalal Maharaj, a revered saint born to Bhima Naik and Dharmini Bai, who is worshipped in their Thandas. They also worship Tulja Bhavani, Jagadamba Devi, as well as Khandoba, a warrior deity, considered another form of Shiva.

One of their main festivals is Seetla, where 7 sister goddesses represented by stones are worshipped along with a male deity Lankadiya, to invoke their blessins for protection of cattle.

Apart from this you have major Tribal Jataras like the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara and Nagoba Jatara in Telangana, which draw a large number of devotees, not just in Telugu states, but even from Odisha, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra.

Tribal worship generally involves a combination of their native deities, forest spirits, ancestral spirits along with the regular Hindu gods, who again take their own form here.

On a Tuesday, the day after Vijayadashami in 1757, a devotee named Pathiwada Appalaswamy Naidu retrieved Pydimamba from the large pond in Vizianagaram. This moment marked the beginning of a sacred lineag, he became the first priest of the goddess, and his descendants have carried that responsibility across generations.

His descendants continue the practice of ascending the Sirimanu, and blessing thousands of devotees who gather for the festival.

She is believed to be the younger sister of then Vizianagaram ruler Pedda Vijayarama Raju, and devoted deeply to Devi. When her brother set out for war against Bobilli in 1757, she pleaded with him in vain not to fall for the trap set by the French General Bussy. Though the residents of Bobilli fought bravely till the end, the combined might of Vizianagaram, the French and Nizam, saw them fall, and the fort demolished.

Though her brother was victorious, that night Devi appeared in her dream and warned her about the danger to his life. Then in a fast, she left for Bobilli with Pathivada Appalaswamy Naidu and some other followers. But after some time, she fell into a trance and merged with Devi. She told her followers that her statue would be found in the western corner of a large pond, and ordered them to retrieve it, build a temple for her, and do Puja regularly.

The Sirimanutsavam is the highlight of the celebrations that begin after Vijayadashami. Basically the priest sits on a chair affixed to the end of a long pole, and then does Pradakshina around the temple. Many devotees visit the Jatara for this ceremony, not just from Vizianagaram, but even surrounding towns, cities in Uttarandhra.

The Sirimanu is a living testament to devotion, craftsmanship, and divine alignment. Each year, a tree measuring 33 cubits must be found, shaped, and consecrated for the Sirimanu procession. The search itself is a ritual by itself, and when the tree is found found, it is treated as a vessel of Ammavaru. Adorned in golden hues, it becomes the centre around which the entire Sirimanu Sambaram revolves.

The Pujari sits on the chair at end of the pole holding a staff, representing authority, while devotees throw bananas in reverence. And the procession is led by Besthavari Vala, Paladhara, White elephant and Anjali Ratha.

Besthavaru are the fishermen who held a special significance for Pydithalli Ammavaru. When the deity was hidden somewhere in the large lake, in the town, it was these fishermen living in Yatha Veedhi, who dived into the waters and bought her out. That is the reason why they get the privilege of the first darshan of Pydithalli Ammavaru during the Jatara. And during the procession, its these fisherman who lead the way carrying their nets( Vala).

The fishermen are followed by a group of men with spears, who are believed to be Ammavaru’s soldiers herself called Paladhara. They are believed to be descendants of the forest guards who fiercely protected the fort, and they make quite a spectacle, walking with their spears, drums beating.

The White Elephant follows next, during the Gajapati time, the royal elephant would carry the Ammavaru during Sirimanu procession. However since 1956, a cart in the shape of a white elephant is used symbolically. There are 7 men in female attire and 1 male, who are believed to be the 7 sisters of Ammavaru, and her brother Pothuraju.

The end of the procession is bought up by the Anjali Ratham, symbolizing bond between Ammavaru and those who serve her. The 5 women on the chariot, are Ammavaru’s Paracharikas who serve her, and perform the Anjali to her.

As lakhs of devotees gather, Ammarvaru emerges from her templ, dressed as a priest, seated upon the golden Sirimanu, and does Pradakshina around the temple blessing all.

One of the main traditions during Navaratri is that of Golu, the display of dolls and figurines, which is observed in the Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Golu typically means “decoration of dolls” in Tamil, while in Telugu it’s called Bommala Koluvu meaning “Court of toys” and Gombe Habba in Kannada meaning “Festival of dolls”.

Typically the Golu dolls are arranged in tiers, that narrate a story or a particular theme. Typically the Devi Bhagavatam story is narrated, or sometimes a them like that of a wedding. It is also a form of socializing, where neighbours, relatives and family friends often drop in to see the display, dine and sometimes have a musical recitation too.

History

It’s believed this tradition originated in the Vijayanagara Empire, during their grand Mahanavami celebrations. The Nayakas and Palegars spread this tradition from Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The Mahanavami celebrations in Hampi were state sponsored, during which the Emperor would renew their alliances with the vassals, and exercise their power. It’s believed the Golu display was representative of the Durbar, and the hierarchy there.

While it’s typically celebrated during Dasara, in Andhra Pradesh we have the Bommala Koluvu during Sankranti too, while the Khedawals, a Gujarati Brahmin community, who migrated and settled in Tamil Nadu, observe this during Krishnashtami too.

In Tamil Nadu, the Rajahs of Thanjavur and Pudukottai, followed this tradition at their courts, however it spread among the common people during end of the 19th century. It was primarily the upper class communities like Chettiars, Tamil Brahmins who began to hold it in their homes. Most major temples in Tamil Nadu also organize Golu during Navaratri.

On first day of Navaratri, a welcoming ritual is performed for Lakshmi, Saraswati and Durga through a ritual called Kalasa Aavahanam, performed by an elder person. This is followed by setting up the wooden racks for display, usually an odd number( 3,5,7,9,11).

The dolls depicting characters from Puranas, royal courts, weddings, ratha yatra, every day scenes, minature utensils used in kitchen. Also wooden figurines of bride and groom are placed together called Marapachi Bommai or Pattada Gombe, usually made of sandalwood, teak, rosewood or dried coconut. The dolls depicting a husband and wife symbolize fertility, prosperity.

These figurines are often passed from one generation to another as a family heirloom. Evenings see neighbouring ladies visit the home, where gifts and sweets are exchanged. The Kuthuvillaku lamp is lit, in middle of a rangoli, and after puja food items are given to the guests. The first 3 days are dedicated to Durga, next 3 days to Lakshmi and last 3 days to Saraswati.

Saraswati Puja is done on the 9th day, where special prayers are offered, where books and musical instruments are worshipped. Finally on Vijayadashami, one of the dolls is symbolically put to sleep to mark the end during the evening, and Kalasha is moved a bit towards the North.

Golu in a way contributed to the development of native crafts, due to the royal patronage, that included pottery and clay work.

The famous Thanjavur dolls were created during the reign of Serfoji II, and are now a common feature in all golus. This tradition has also led to development of other traditional crafts like the Kondapalli wooden toys of Andhra Pradesh and the Channapatna toys of Karnataka.

It has given a livelihood for many artisan communites, like the potters of Velachery who made those puravi, terracota horses for worship of Ayanar.

Golu is among one of the rich traditions during Navaratri, followed in the South, that has proved to be a source of sustenance for many artisan communities.

Ganga, the holiest of the rivers, is derived from the Sanskrit word गङ्गा, that literally means “one which moves swiftly” from the root गम्( Gam) which means to move. She is also worshipped as a Devi, riding a crocodile like creature called Makara.

In Ramayana, Ganga is described as the first born of Himavat, and a sister to Parvati, while in the Mahabharat she is the mother of Bhishma, through King Shantanu. The Ramayana also has story of her descent to earth through Bhagiratha.

Yamuna in the Puranas is the daughter of Surya, and sister of Yama. Also called Yami and Kalindi, she is also one of Krishna’s 8 principal wives. Dark in complexion, her mount is a tortoise, carrying a water pot in hand.

Yamuna’s other brothers include Vaivasvata Manu, the first ever man as per Puranas, the Ashwini twins and Shani. As per Puranas, Surya’s spouse Sanjana was unable to bear the heat and light radiating from him, and so she shut her eyes.

Surya felt insulted, and told her that their son would be called Yama, as he showed restraint, while his twin sister would be called Yamuna. Since Sanjana tried keeping her eyes open the second time, Yamuna would be worshipped as a goddess too.

Yamuna’s other name Kalindi comes from her being the sister of Yama, the god of death and darkness, while some sources claim it to be her descent from the mountain Kalinda.

As per Vamana Purana, Shiva distraught from the death of Sati, jumped into the waters of Yamuna, turning them black with his sorrow. Another version states that Krishna vanquishing Kaliya, made the waters of the river black in color.

Chambal river’s ancient name was Charmanvati, meaning river on whose banks leather was dried. In due course of time, the name became Chambal. As per Puranas, the river is believed to have originated from the blood of animals killed by King Rantideva.

Another version states that the notorious dice game in Mahabharat was played on the banks of the river, when it was called Charmawati. Draupadi is believed to have cursed that anyone who drinks the water here, will forever be filled with a spirit of vengenance.

The belief of animals being slaughtered here, and their skins dried on the banks, made many not do the final rites of those who passed away in the river, which ironically in a way has kept Chambal much cleaner.

Once while Shiva was meditating, a beautiful maiden emerged from his breath. He blessed her saying “You made me feel pleasure and tenderness, hence you shall be called Narmada”.

She was later turned into a river, and is now the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh.

Tapti river that flows through MP, Maharashtra and Gujarat, is named after the daughter of Surya and his other wife Chhaya. Her name literally means the “burning one”, in Mahabharat she is also the mother of Kuru, founder of the dynasty.

Indus or Sindhu river, that flows through Ladakh, Punjab, and is Pakistan’s major river, was called as Sindhu in Sanskrit, Hindu in Persian, both meaning “border river”, Indus was the Roman name, while it is Senge Tsangpo in Ladakh and Tibet.

The 5 rivers that flow into the Indus, and are an integral part of Punjab, each have their own history and legend.

Jhelum was called as Vitasta in ancient times. As per Puranas Rishi Kashyapa prayed to Parvati to come to Kashmir and purify it of the evil practices there.

Parvati took the shape of an underground river. Shiva using his trident struck a ditch measuring one vitasta, from where the river came out, hence it’s name. The point where it came out is now the Verinag spring in Kashmir valley. There is a Shivlinga there too.

Chenab was called Asikni in ancient times, due to it’s dark colored waters. In Mahabharat it is referred to as Chandrabhaga, as it was the confluence of Chandra and Bhaga rivers, it later became Chenab in due course.

Ravi river was called as Irawati in ancient times, while the Beas was called as Vipasa, meaning without restrictions due to it’s free flowing nature.

Sutlej was called Satadru in ancient times, as per Puranas when Rishi Vashishta, jumped into the river, it split itself into a hundred strems ( Satadhara) believing him to be a great ball of fire. It later became Sutlej in due course.

Damodar flowing through Jharkhand, Bengal often called the River of Sorrow due to it’s floods, is named after Krishna, from the story of Yashoda tying a rope(Dama) around his belly(Udara).

Kosi river flowing through Bihar and Nepal, is believed to have got it’s name from Kaushika, another name for Vishwamitra, who is said to have attained the status of a Rishi after he meditated on it’s banks here. It is the lifeline of Mithila region.

Brahmaputra is the only river in India to have a male name, believed to be the son of Brahma himself. It merges with Ganga in Bangladesh, where it is known as Padma and becomes Meghna.

Mahanadi literally meaning “Great River” and the lifeline of Odisha was known by several names. Kanaknandini Chitrotpala(Dwapara Yuga) Nilotpala(Treta Yuga) Also called Mahashweta.

Godavari one of the holiest rivers, and the major river of Andhra, Telangana, Maharashtra a symbol of Telugu culture, originates in Triambakeshwar. Also called as Gautami.

As per Puranas, Rishi Gautama and his wife Ahalya, lived in a village Govuru( now Kovvur). Once Ganesha sent a maya dhenu, in guise of a normal cow, that began to eat up the crops. Gautama placed the darba grass on the cow, but it fell dead.

Accused of the sin of Gau Hatya, he went to Triambakeshwar and prayed to Shiva, asking him to make the Ganga flow over the cow’s corpse. Shiva diverted the Ganga towards South, and made it flow over the corpse, which accounts for it’s name, also called as Dakshina Ganga.

The Godavari after Rajahmundry splits into 7 tributaries known as the Sapta Godavari, named after the Sapta Rishi, Tulyabhaga(Kashyapa),Atreya(Atri), Gautami(Gautama),Bhardvāja, Kauśika, Vasistha and Jamadagni.

The Krishna river is actually Krishnaveni, meaning Dark Stream, owing to it’s dark colors. It’s main tributary Tungabhadra is so called after confluence of two rivers Tunga and Bhadra both of which meet at Kudala Sangama.

The Penna river flowing through Andhra Pradesh, is also called Pinakini after the mighty bow of Shiva, due to it’s shape. Also the river originates in the Nandi Hills of Karnataka. The Telugu name is derived from Penu( Grand) and Yeru(River).

Kaveri considered one of the 7 holy rivers of Hinduism, is believed to be Lopamudra, the wife of Rishi Agastya. She turned into a river to serve the drought hit lands of the South, and her name comes from King Kavera, who raised her as his daughter.

It’s ancient name was Pithikapuram, and is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethams, the places where Sati’s body parts fell, after her corpse was cut into pieces by Sudarshana Chakra. Her left hand is believed to have fallen here, and she is worshipped as Purohitika Devi.It was mentioned in Samudragupta’s inscription at Prayag Raj as Pishtapura, one of 12 the kingdoms of Dakshinapatha whom he had conquered, along with Vengi, Kanchi,Kurala.

Puruhutika Devi is the main deity in Pithapuram, shown with 4 hands, one holding a kalasa containing Amrit, another holding the Madi Phala,while the rear hands hold a shield and an axe.

Apart from being a Mahashakti Peetham, Pithapuram is also significant as one of the Trigaya Kshetrams, the other two being Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Biraja Temple at Jajpur in Odisha. This is called as Padha Gaya Kshetram.

As per the Sthala Purana, there was an Asura ruler Gayasura, who was a devotee of Vishnu. He did penance to Vishnu and asked for a boon by which his body would manifest itself with all the divinity of the Punya Kshetras. And his body became as holy, with none of the sins able to touch him, even the small beings that died on his body, achieved Moksha, due to the divine presence. By the power of the divinity manifested in him, his good deeds and the Yagnas he did, Gayasura acquired the throne of Indra, who did penance to Brahma, to get back the position he lost.

Brahma told him that he was planning to conduct a great Yagna, for which he needed the holiest place ever. Gayasura being a giant of a personality, offered his own body to conduct the Yagna on. So huge was his body that on stretching, his head rested in Bodh Gaya, while his feet rested in Pithapuram. The Yagna on his body would last for 7 days, during which he would not be getting up.

However when the Devas requested Shiva to disturb the Yagna, to ensure Gayasura does not become too powerful, he took the form of a cock, and crowed at an early hour on the 7th day, just before the Yagna was to end. Thinking it was morning, and the end of the Yagna, Gayasura got up before it was over, thus disturbing it. However he got a boon from Vishnu, Brahma that due to his devotion, the 3 parts of his body, would become Punya Kshetras.

Those 3 parts are what are called Tri Gaya Kshetras, the head or Siro Gaya at Bodh Gaya, the middle part or Nabhi Gaya at Biraja Temple, Jajpur, Odisha and the feet at Pithapuram, which is the reason why it’s also called as Pada Gaya Kshetram.

Since Shiva appeared in the form of a cock at Pithapuram, he is worshipped here as Kukkuteswara Swamy, and this temple is right opposite to the Puruhitika Devi temple.

The Kukkuteswara Swamy temple faces north, and as soon as one enters it, there is a large tank called the Pada Gaya Sarovar, and it’s believed taking a dip here is equivalent to that of taking in Ganga. And near the Dhwaja Stambha are large imprints of Gayasura.

The complex has shrines for Chandeeshwara Swamy, Kala Bhairava who is the Kshetra Palaka here, Sri Subramanya Swamy, Siddhi Ganapati and Shri Dattatreya. There is an old banyan tree in the temple complex called Audumbara Vriksha, and it’s believed anyone touching those would be blessed with good fortune. The main temple of Kukkuteswara is located in the center. The temple also has a large Nandi carved out of a single rock, as well as a shrine dedicated to Shri Raja Rajeshwari Devi, the consort of Kukkuteswara Swamy here.

The Kunti Madhava temple at Pithapuram is one of the Pancha Madhava Kshetras, believed to have been built by Indra to atone for the killing of Vritasura. The other 4 are Bindu Madhava(Kashi), Veni Madhav(Prayag Raj), Sethu Madhava(Rameswaram) ,Sundara Madhava(Thiruvananthapuram).

Among the Trigaya Kshetrams, Vishnu is worshipped at Bodh Gaya as Gadadhara, while Brahma is worshipped in form of Biraja Devi at Jajpur and Shiva as Kukkuteshwara at Pitapuram, as per Gayasura’s wish. This is the reason why these three Gaya Kshetrams are considered auspicious to do Pinda Pradhana and Shraddha Karmas for the departed souls of our ancestors.

Pithapuram is also home to Sripada Srivallabha Swamy who is believed to be an avatar of Dattatreya himself. His home is now a temple, and it’s the only place in India, which has a swayambhu murthy of Dattatreya.

Apart from the temples, Pithapuram was one of the well known Samsthanams in Coastal Andhra, of whom Surya Rao Bahadur, was quite prominent as a patron of arts and literature. is located right on the Chennai-Howrah line by rail, if you are travelling by road, you can take a detour from the National Highway towards Kakinada, either from Rajahmundry or Vizag.

If you are visiting Annavaram, you could include Pithapuram too in your trip, as it’s located close by. The temples, the Shakti Peetam,the lush green paddy fields nearby make it worth a visit.

Together, Bathukamma and Bonalu in Telangana form a twin tribute to Shakti in her nurturing and warrior forms, uniquely localized yet resonant with pan-Indian Devi traditions. These festivals are embodied, participatory, and women oriented, where the ladies are not just devotees but carriers of tradition, rhythm, and renewal.

It is usually celebrated during the Mahalaya Amavasya, coinciding with the Navaratri festivities. It starts on Mahalaya Amavasya, and ends with the Pedda Bathukamma on Durgashtami. The festival primarily welcomes the arrival of the Sharad season, after the rainy season, and just before the winter starts. The literal meaning of Bathukamma is "Mother come alive" as Devi is believed to represent Life itself.

It is believed that a Chola ruler, Dharmanagada after prayers for a child, was blessed with a daughter, who was the incarnation of Lakshmi herself. All the sages who visited the royal couple, blessed the little one to live forever saying Bathukamma.

Bathuku means Life, Amma is a term of endearment for women. Since then the festival is one of the main ones in Telangana, though in recent times in Hyderabad, many women from other parts of India, and even foreigners too are taking part in it.

While the young girls observe it in the belief of getting a good husband, married women do so for the prosperity and well being of their families. It mostly involves ladies dressed in saree, or langa voni( half saree) dancing around in a circle singing songs, clapping.

Also as per history, Vemulawada known for it's huge Raja Rajeswara Temple was under the Kalyani Chalukyas, who were feudatories to the Rashtrakutas. During the regular battles between Cholas and Rashtrakutas, they sided with the latter.

Parantaka Chola was a devotee of Raja Rajeswara, and his grandson Rajendra Chola, in his attack on the Chalukyas, took the massive Shiva Linga from Vemulawada as a victory gift, and this made the people there downhearted.

Apparently in order to console Parvati, on the loss of the Shiva Linga at Vemulawada, the people there made the flower stack in the form of Meru Mountain. Parvati is called as Bruhadamma in the Raja Rajeswara Temple, and it's believed Bathukamma came from this.

Another legend behind this states, that Bathukamma is meant to celebrate Sati being reborn as Parvati again. While another states, that Durga tired after slaying Mahishasura, fell asleep, her devotees prayed to her to wake up, and she did on Aswayuja Padyami.

On the first 5 days of Bathukamma, women clean their courtyard using a mix of cow dung and water( primarily in villages and small towns), and decorate it with muggulu made of rice flour( Rangoli). Different kind of flowers are gathered to make the Bathukamma.

The Bathukamma preparation is an art by itself. Women start some time in the afternoon, cutting the flowers arranging them on a wide plate. The flowers include Marigold, Crysanthemum, Lotus etc.

Bathukamma is celebrated over a period of 9 days, the main ritual involves women, moving around in a circle, of the Bathukammas, clapping, singing songs. Mostly the songs are devoted to Devi, seeking health and prosperity.

Each day of Bathukamma sees a different offering to Devi, and is named after the Naivedyam.

Day 1-Starts on Mahalaya Amavasya, called Engili Pulla Bathukamma, offering is nuvvulu(Sesame seeds) with biyyam pindi( Rice flour). Also called Pethara Amavasya in Telangana.

Day 2- Atukula Bathukamma, where the offering is Sapidi Pappu( boiled dal), bellam( jagggery) and Atukulu( Poha).

Day 3-Mudappapu Bathukkama, where the offering is of boiled dal, milk and jaggery. Mudappapu is Telugu for soft boiled dal.

Day 4-Nanabiyyam Bathukamma, offering of wet soaked rice( Nanabiyyam) and Jaggery. Actually it's Nanesina Biyyam.

Day 5- Atlu Bathukamma, basically Atlu, kind of Dosa here in Telugu state, more crisp in nature, offered to Devi.

Day 6- Aligina Bathukamma, on this day, no offering is made to Devi, as it is believed she is not in a good mood( Aligina in Telugu means sulking, Alaka is the noun form). So the Devi is left alone.

Day 7-Vepakayala Bathukamma, offering is made of Neem fruits. Again Vepa is Telugu for Neem.

Day 8-Vennamuddala Bathukamma, butter balls are offered to Devi.

Venna is Telugu for butter, Vennamudddalu is butter balls in Telugu.

Day 9- Sadulla Bathukkama also called Pedda Bathukamma, where a sumptuous feast is offered with curd rice, pulihora( tamarind rice), lemon rice, coconut rice and sesame rice. This coincides with Durga Ashtami, Saddi is a local Telugu word for cooked rice.

On the final day, the Bathukamma is immersed in water,and the symbolic turmeric idol of Gauramma is removed, the women apply the paste on their forehead. This is done amidst drum beats and lot of devotion.

Though more a Telangana specific festival, from last 4 years, Bathukamma has seen participation from many outside Telangana too. And in recent times it has been celebrated by Telugus in US, UK, Australia, Canada too.

Again of these Shakti Peethas, you have 4 Adi Shakti Peethas, considered the major ones, and all are in the Eastern region. The Kamakhya temple at Gauhati, Kalighata at Kolkata, Tara Tarini at Berhampur and Bimala Pada at Puri, which is part of the Puri Jagannatha complex.

Apart from the Adi Shakti Peethas, you have 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, which are mentioned in the Ashta Dasha Shakti Peetha Stothram by Adi Shankara, of which two are not in India, Shankari Devi at Trincomalee( Sri Lanka) and Sharada Peetha at Muzaffarabad( POK).

The Sharada Peeth in Muzaffarabad, POK is mostly in ruins now, while Kamakhya is considered as both an Adi Shakti Peetha and Maha Shakti Peetha.

Of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, three are particularly considered sacred, Kamakhya,where the yoni fell, is associated with the act of creation. Sarvamangala, Gaya, where the breasts fell and is associated with nourishment. And Avantika, Ujjain, where the upper lip fell with destruction.

The most prominent of the Maha Shakti Peethas in Telugu states is Brahmaramba at Srisailam, which is also one of the Jyotirlinga Kshetras where Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna, making it one of the holiest spots for Hindus. It's believed that Hiranyakasipu, the Asura ruler, did his penance to Shiva here at Srisailam, while Ahobilam was where he held court.

Rama and Seeta in Treta Yuga, the Pandavas in Dwapara Yuga, visited this place during their exile, there is a pond named after Bhima here.It is also believed to be one of the 3 Shiva Lingas that make up Trilinga Desham, the older name for Andhra/ Telangana, the other two being Draksharama in East Godavari district and Kaleshwaram in Telangana.

Since Shiva was worshipped mostly with Jasmines at Srisailam, he was called as Mallikarjuna( Malli in telugu is Jasmine) or more colloquially as Mallana. Shakti is called as Brahmaramba as it's believed she worshipped Shiva in form of a bee ( Brahmara) here. As per history the Vishnukundins were the earliest devotees of Mallikarjuna Swamy, during the Kakatiya rule, they contributed to the temple's growth, the vimana gopuram was believed to have been constructed by Mallamadevi, sister of Ganapatideva.

It’s Golden Age was during the rule of the Reddy Rajulu, Prolaya Vema Reddi constructed the pathway to the temple as also to the Patalaganga. The Vijayanagara rulers made major contributions, esp the Mukhamandapam and Southern Gopuram. Srikrishna Deva Raya, visited Srisailam in 1516 AD, after his succesful campaign against the Gajapatis, and constructed the Salumandapas here. He also constructed the Rajagopuram.

Chattrapathi Shivaji visited Srisailam in 1674, restored the temple to it's glory, which had fallen into neglect after fall of Vijayanagara. This is the statue of him at Srisailam, and there is also a Shivaji Mandapam at Srisailam in his honor.

Jogulamba temple at Alampur in Mehboobnagar dt( now Jogulamba Gadwal), Telangana is the other Mahashakti peetham in Telugu states. Sati's upper teeth are believed to have fallen here, this is also called Navabrahma Theertha, Shiva is worshipped here as Brahmeswara.Alampur Navabrahma Temples are a cluster of 9 temples dedicated to Shiva, located at the Sangama of the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers, making this a very holy spot. Built by the Badami Chalukyas, these temples are known for their architectural excellence.

Sangameshwara Temple at Alampur is the most well known at Alampur, constructed by Pulakesin I, in typical Chalukyan style. Built at Kudaveli, where the Sangama of Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers takes place, somewhere in the 7th century, must visit.The temples at Alampur bear the typical Badami Chalukya style of architecture, which typically tend to have a smaller gopuram, in contrast to the large ones you have down South. You find this kind of style in North Karnataka, primarily Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal.

The Navabrahma Temples at Alampur are as follows

1) Taraka Brahma- One of the smaller temples, has deities carved into the ceiling.

2) Svarga Brahma- Very elaborate sculptures. Has Shiva in Nataraja form, fables from Panchatantra.

3) Padma Brahma Temple- Last temple to be built in the group, somewhat incomplete.

4) Bala Brahma- Has sculptures of Saptamatrikas, Shivratri celebrated in grand style here.

5) Garuda Brahma- Has a large sculpture of Garuda.

6) Kumara Brahma- Again one of the finest temples in the complex, pillars have many miniature carvings.

7) Arka Brahma- Mostly in ruins now

8) Vishva Brahma Temple- Again has very intricate carvings

9) Vira Brahma Temple- The northern most one.

Jogulamba Temple at Alampur is one of the 18 Mahashakti Peethas, this has Shakti in a rather fierce form, sitting on a corpse, with scorpion, frog and lizard on head. As she grants Siddhi in Yoga, she was called Yogulamma, meaning mother of Yogis, Jogulamba is the local name.

Jogulamba is flanked by Chandi, Mundi. The original idol was shifted to a new temple in 2005, beautiful one with granite flooring surrounded by water. The locals state that since Jogulamba is Devi's Ugra Rupa, the water is meant to cool the atmosphere around her. There is a small Yellamma temple too near Jogulamba temple. It's believed to be where Parashuram killed his mother Renuka and she came back to life here. Locals worship Renuka as Yellamma in Telangana, and u can find many temples dedicated to her there.

The next two Shaktipeethas in Andhra Pradesh, are both located in East Godavari district- Manikyamba at Draksharama, which is also one of the Pancharamas and Puruhatika Devi at Pithapuram near Kakinada.

Surrounded by lush green paddy fields, Draksharama is one of the Pancharamas, five Shiva Temples located at Amaravati( Guntur dt), Samarlakota( E.Godavari), Palakollu and Bhimavaram( W.Godavari). These Pancharamas are so called as they are believed to be places of rest. Apparently when Kartikeya battled Tarakasura, he could not kill him, as the latter had the powerful Shiva Linga with him that protected. Vishnu then advised Kartikeya to first shatter the Shiva Linga, and then kill Tarakasura. However he also warned that it would grow very fast.

Kartikeya shattered the Shiva Linga with his spear, and the 5 spots where the pieces fell were the Pancharamas. However he had to ensure that the Lingas had to be stopped, as they grew rapidly, and so the Devas hammered nails there. This is why the Lingas are very tall here.

Draksharama is one of the Mahashakti Peethas, where Sati's left cheek is believed to have fallen. As per some versions Manikyamba is believed to be a more corrupted version of Mainakadevi, daughter of Himavanta.

The more popular version states that Manikyamba was the daughter of a prostitute, and decided that she would marry Bhimeswara only. After severe penance, Shiva was pleased with her devotion, and she became his consort. This was mentioned by Telugu poet Srinatha in Bhimakandam.

Also in Draksharama you have the Ashta Someshwara temples, smaller Lingas consecrated by the Sapta Rishis. Initially the Shiva Lingam had such intensity that the Rishis were not able to approach it. So they installed Lingas in 8 directions, that wud cool the intensity. Draksharama Bhimeswara Temple was built by the Chalukyan ruler Bhima, which also accounts for the name. Also there is a pond Sapta Godavari, believed to contain waters from the 7 tributaries of the Godavari, consecrated by the Sapta Rishis to worship the Shiva Linga.

The other Maha Shakti temple is that of Puruhutika Devi at Pithapuram. The place incidentally get it's name from here, it was called Pithikapuram, and believed to be place where Sati's left hand fell here. Shiva is worshipped as Kukkuteswara Swamy here,in the shape of a cock. This place is also one of the Tri Gaya kshetrams, so called after Gayasura, an Asura who was a devotee of Shiva. This is called as Pada Gaya, as his feet were here.

Puruhutika Devi at Pithapuram, has 4 hands, that contain a bag of seeds, an axe, a lotus, and a dish. Incidentally there were 2 sects worshipping her, one as Puruhita Lakshmi, following a Samyachar worship, another as Puruhitamba which followed a Vamachara worship. Also it's believed Indra prayed, to Devi here at Pithapuram, after being cursed by Rishi Gautama, for seducing Ahalya. He prayed to Puruhitika Devi and was blessed with his original form. Also Jagadguru Sripada Vallabha an incarnation of Dattatreya was born here.

Shwetarkamula Ganapati Temple, located within the premises of Kazipet Railway Station is one of the more well known Ganesha temples in Telangana. It’s believed that the Ganesha here was not sculpted, but a Swayambhu form that merged from the living root of a century-old Swetharka (White Calotropis), or what we call in Telugu as “Tella Jilledu” tree.

Ganapati faces east here, aligning with auspicious energies and invoking the dawn of wisdom, while the other deities in the temple are carved from Amrutashila, a rare stone from Mahabalipuram. When struck with a coin, they emit musical notes—turning darshan into a multisensory experience.

As per the Narada Purana, it’s believed that when a white Jilledu lives for a hundred years, the form of Ganapati manifests by itself in the roots. This Ganapati was not shaped by chisel or hand.His eyes, forehead, elbows, palms, āsana, and talpa emerged naturally from the earth whispering its devotion.

This temple was built by Inavolu Anantha Mallaiah Sharma who was serving as the priest of the Sai Baba temple near the Railway Station, after he had visited the Vara Siddhi Vinayaka Temple at Kanipakam. It’s believed he had a dream in 1996, where he saw the Swetarkamulam Ganapati in the home of one Mada Prabhakar Sarma of Nalgonda. On going to Nalgonda, he located the Ganapati under the root of the Tella Jilledu tree.

The deity was consecrated at a place called Vishnupuri near the Railway Station, and the temple was officially inaugurated on May 1999. It is built in such a way that it could be seen from both North and South, and Ganapati was installed here in the presence of five priests, symbolizing Pancha Bhuta, with a 18.5 kg silver shield affixed to it. The full fledged temple complex, was however completed by January 2008.

The temple is built in typical Kalinga style architecture, with the jagamohana and rekha deul. Apart from Ganpati, the complex also has smaller shrines to Veeranjaneya, Sita Rama Lakshmana, Venkateswara with Padmavati, Navagrahas, Subramanya Swamy and Ayappa Swamy.During every first Tuesday of the month, Ganapati Homam and Garika Puja is done by devotees.

One of the well known Ganapati temples in Andhra Pradesh is that of the Dasabhuja Ganapati at Rayadurgam. Located within the Rayadurgam Fort, this temple is believed to be over 800 years old, built during the Vijayanagara dynasty. The deity is a monolithic sculpture, standing 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide, carved from a single stone.

This Ekasila form is a very rare depiction of Ganesha with 10 arms, unlike the more common two- or four-armed depictions. Each arm is said to hold a symbolic weapon representing dominion over various aspects of existence, from intellect to obstacles.

Also the Ganesha here is in a Trinetra form with 3 eyes, elevating him into same status as Shiva, suggesting omniscience past, present, and future. And the trunk here is Valampuri, turned towads right, unlike other Ganesha temples where it is to the left, traditionally associated with Siddhi Vinayaka, this orientation is considered highly auspicious and spiritually potent.

Local lore speaks of the idol being Swayambhu, discovered within the Fort and believed to grow subtly over time. Devotees offer purna tenkaya (whole coconuts) and undertake 41-day vows, with many returning to share stories of fulfilled wishes and transformation.

In some traditions, Ganesha is believed to have two wives- Siddhi and Buddhi. raditionally, Siddhi represents spiritual attainment and Buddhi symbolizes intellect or wisdom. Their union with Vigneshwara reflects the synthesis of achievement and insight, both necessary to overcome obstacles and fulfill dharma.

In Tantric and Yogic symbolism, the left side is associated with Shakti, the feminine principle. By placing Siddhi on his left, Rayadurgam’s Ganapati becomes a living metaphor for divine union, where Ganesha is not just the remover of obstacles but the embodied fruit of spiritual effort.

He is also called as Siddhi Sametha Vinayaka, elevating him from a solitary remover of obstacles to a householder of fulfillment, a divine being who has already attained what others seek. It’s a rare depiction—most temples show Ganesha alone or with both consorts flanking him. Here, the embrace is intimate, symbolic, and perhaps even esoteric.

Also the deity here keeps growing every year, much like the Kanipakam Vinayaka. Traditionally Ganesha is adorned with ornaments, but the priests found that the existing ornaments are not enough, due to the growing size.

One more feature here is that devotees offer the Purna Tenkaya( full coconut) to Ganapati, without removing the hair and pulp, and make their wish. If the desired wish is fulfilled within 30-40 days, they take the Tenkaya as Prasadam.

The Rayadurgam Fort within which the temple is located was originally constructed by Junga Nayaka, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, and later fortified by Venkatapathi Nayaka, his successor. It played a key role in resisting invasions, including those by the Deccan Sultanates after the Battle of Talikota.

The fort is renowned for its nested fortification, a series of inner walls and bastions that made it nearly impenetrable. Apart from the Ganapati temple, there are smaller shrines to Hanuman, Ellamma, Prasanna Venkateswara, Venugopala, Jambukeswara, Veerabhadra, and Kanyakaparameswari.

Built primarily from granite, the fort’s architecture is rugged and functional, with minimal ornamentation. Its elevated terrain and natural rock formations were integrated into the design, making it a fortress that feels sculpted from the landscape itself.

Though Ganapati temple in Rayadurgam Fort is not very grand architecturally, it’s worth a visit to see the very rare form of Dasabhuja Ganapati with Trinetram, which you do not usually find.

These temples were built around 849-892 by the 3rd Eastern Chalukya ruler, Gunaga Vijayaditya III, of which the Golingeswara Temple, Chandrashekhara Temple and Rajarajeswara Temple are very famous.

Above all the village is famous for the 11 feet monolithic Ganesha sculpture that attracts devotees from all over.

One of the most prominent temples is the Golingeswara Swamy Temple here dedicated to Shiva. As per Sthala Purana, the Shiva Linga here was originally covered by a mound. The cow of a farmer here used to come and give milk daily. When the cow was not giving milk properly, the farmer followed it after it went to graze. He then saw the cow giving milk at that spot, and told it to others in the village.

The villagers went to that particular spot, and saw the milk in a puddle around the spot where the Lingam was burried, and dug it around. As they began to dig, the Shiva Lingam first emerged, and as they dug even more, another murthy of Subramanyeswara Swamy emerged. As the Shiva Lingam was found due to the cow, the temple built around was called as Golingeswara Swamy.

Apart from the Shiva Lingam, there is a door jamb here with a 33 line Sasanam, suggesting a temple of considerable historical weight, possibly tied to royal patronage or land grants.

The Garba Gudi has a black granite Shiva Lingam here anchoring the temple’s energy. Granite, with its density and permanence, reinforces the Lingam’s role as the immovable, eternal.

The Antarala, a narrow passage connects to the Mukha Mandapam that has many small shrines, each one a vignette, each deity a facet of cosmic play.

One of the most iconic sculptures in the temple is that of Alingana Chandrashekara, showing Shiva and Paravati in an embrace together, located in a separate shrine. Shiva as Chandrashekara (moon-crested) represents pure consciousness, while Parvati embodies dynamic energy (Shakti). Their embrace is the dance of stillness and motion, of form and formlessness.

The walls of the Garba Gudi are decorated with Kostas having sculpture, recesses housing attendant deities or narrative sculptures and mounted by Makaratoranams, ornate arches, often shaped like the mythical Makara , symbolize protection and auspiciousness. Their presence above the niches is like a celestial canopy, guarding the divine essence within.

There is a 3 sided temple to Raja Rajeshwara Swamy, that has Vinayaka, another has Kartikeya seated on a peacock, and another has a Shiva linga with the goddess Mahishasura being slain, along with Sri Rajarajeshwari, while the Chandrashekara Swamy temple has beautiful sculptures of Chandrashekhara and Parvati Devi.

There is another Shiva Temple located on the outskirts of the village, which has a Nataraja sculpture in Chatura pose. Also there is another Shiva temple right in the midst of the village, known for it’s very exquisite sculptures. One more Shiva Temple which has Ganga, Yamuna as the dwarapalakas.

The Lakshmi Ganapati Temple here is one of the more well known ones, that has a 11 feet Ekasila Ganapati, carved out of a single stone, which is visited by a large number of devotees.

As per the Sthala Puranam, Lakshmi once sought the joy of motherhood and adopted Ganesha as her son.This form of Ganesha is flanked or accompanied by Lakshmi, representing the union of spiritual and material prosperity.

Biccavolu is accesible from Kakinada, Rajahmundry by train, as well as by road. The ancient temples, the lush green paddy fields around, the coconut groves make it worth a visit.

In 1320 CE, during the time of Sripada Srivallabha, the villagers of Ainavilli performed a Swarna Ganapati Mahayagna, as recorded by Shankarabhatu in the Sri Pada Sri Vallabha Charitra. During this yagna, Vinayaka appeared in the sacrificial fire, accepted the offerings, and blessed the devotees—a moment of divine descent into ritual space.

Three individuals mocked the sanctity of the yagna and disrespected Lord Vinayaka. As a karmic consequence, they were reborn as mute, deaf, and blind—a triad of sensory deprivation symbolizing spiritual ignorance.In a later birth, they recognized the divine emergence of Vinayaka at Kanipakam, where the murti is said to have grown from the earth and continues to expand—a moment of anugraha (grace) and jñāna (awakening).

Ainavilli is quite a popular temple in Konaseema, and is worth a visit, with it's picturesque surroundings.

Swetharkamoola Ganapathi Temple in Kazipet is a radiant jewel in Warangal’s spiritual landscape. It’s no surprise that devotees from Hyderabad and beyond flock here, especially during Chaturthi and Navaratri, drawn by the temple’s reputation for instant blessings and spiritual breakthroughs. The atmosphere—charged yet serene—makes it one of the most compelling Ganapati shrines in Telangana.

Vatapi Ganapatim Bhaje,Ham- I bow to thee O Ganapati of Vatapi.

Vatapi is the ancient name for Badami, the Chalukyan capital in Karnataka. According to legend, the idol of Vatapi Ganapati was brought from the Chalukyan capital of Vatapi (modern-day Badami) by Paranjothi, the commander-in-chief of Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, after the Pallava victory over Pulakeshin II in 642 CE. Rather than treating the idol as mere war booty, Paranjothi enshrined it in his native village of Tiruchenkattankudi, at the Uthrapathiswaraswamy Temple, where it remains venerated to this day.

Their words carry the vibration of Para—truth beyond articulation. Pashyanti gives them the power of inner vision; they speak what they have seen in the soul.

The image of Vakra Tunda—the curved trunk of Ganesha—is not merely anatomical. It is a living ideogram, a calligraphic echo of Om (ॐ) itself. In many traditional depictions, the trunk’s curve mirrors the syllabic flow of Om.

The lower curve represents waking consciousness (Vaikhari), the upper curve the dream state (Madhyama) and the dot and crescent, Para and Pashyanti, the silence beyond sound. Thus, Ganesha’s trunk becomes the embodied Pranava, the manifestation of the unmanifest, the sound-body of the cosmos.

Nitilaka, the forehead, often the seat of the ājñā chakra, the command center of intuition and divine will. Chandra-Khandam, the crescent moon, not full but partial—symbolizing cyclical time, waxing wisdom, and the rhythm of creation.

In Shaiva tradition, this is most famously associated with Shiva, whose crescent moon represents, mastery over time (Kāla),coolness of mind amidst cosmic fire and the waxing and waning of creation itself.

“Kalusha-vidūram” and “Bhūtākāram” together evoke a being who is both immense in form and immaculate in essence—a cosmic paradox resolved in the figure of Ganesha.

Kalusha refers to impurity, stain, or distortion—whether physical, mental, or karmic. Vidūram means “far removed” or “utterly distant.”

“Bhūta” refers to the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether. “Ākāra” means form or embodiment.

Ganesha is thus the cosmic body, the aggregate of all elemental existence, the form that contains all forms. His vastness is not just physical—it’s metaphysical, mythic, and symbolic.

The image of Ganesha’s round form being pleasing to Hara and Guruguha is not just affectionate—it’s cosmically intimate. It evokes a familial tenderness, a spiritual resonance, and a metaphysical harmony between the remover of obstacles and the wielders of fire and wisdom.

Vṛtta-rūpa is Ganesha’s rotund form that symbolizes completeness, abundance, and the fullness of creation. It is the bindu that contains all tattvas, the cosmic belly that digests duality.

Shiva, the ascetic destroyer, finds joy in his son’s playful, round form—a contrast to his own austere presence. It’s the balance of tapas and leela, of dissolution and delight.

In Carnatic tradition, it’s often paired with compositions to Vinayaka, such as “Vātāpi Gaṇapatim Bhajeham” by Muthuswami Dikshitar. To say Ganesha is “adorned by Hamsadhwani” is to say his presence is musical, his form is mantra, and his movement is melody.

Heramba is a fierce yet compassionate form of Ganesha, often depicted with five faces and riding a lion. He is the guardian of the vulnerable, the shield of the timid, and the champion of those without power. In Tantric traditions, Heramba is invoked for protection, courage, and inner strength—especially in times of fear or transition.
