Happy Memorial Day. Today we honor the American soldiers who gave their lives in service to our country and remember the ultimate sacrifices they made. It’s also worth remembering that our commander-in-chief Donald Trump was reported in 2020 to have referred to fallen U.S. service members as “losers” and “suckers,” a story that was later corroborated by Trump’s former Chief of Staff, John Kelly, in 2023. We owe our fallen soldiers far better than that.

Tax-Funded Corruption

Since taking office, Trump has used his power to enrich himself over and over again. He has faced absolutely no accountability, so why wouldn’t he continue to act as if his actions have no consequences? So when Trump sued his own IRS for $10,000,000,000 through his Department of Justice, his IRS decided to settle rather than fight what many see as an obvious scam, agreeing to pay $1,800,000,000. Where does the money for this settlement come from? The American taxpayer.

He has now created a slush fund for himself, his family, his allies, and January 6 insurrectionists. If that wasn’t bad enough, the settlement includes a blanket pardon for any past or present tax crimes. This would mean he never has to pay taxes again. We don’t have a president, we have a mafia boss, a king, a tyrant.

Note: Why is this so important to pay attention to, aside from the fact that it is grossly unethical and appears to be an obvious scam? Because if he can use taxpayer money to reward January 6 insurrectionists who tried to overturn an election on his behalf, then he is sending a clear message that if a similar effort is attempted in the future, those involved can expect to be rewarded for it.

One Nation Bought by the Israel Lobby

Yesterday Congressman Thomas Massie got absolutely obliterated in his primary against Ed Gallrein. This became the most expensive congressional primary race in American history. Gallrein took over $15,500,000 in bribes from Israel-aligned lobbying groups and donors. What were the next two most expensive primaries? Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, two politicians critical of Israel whose races were flooded with outside money by pro-Israel PACs determined to buy those seats.

Massie dared to stand up to Trump on 2 issues, the Epstein files and the Iran war, and he also refused to take money from Israel-aligned groups. For that, he was targeted, and another congressional race was bought by Israel. Massie voted with the Republican Party 91% of the time, and even that wasn’t enough. Don’t you dare go against Trump and Israel. If it hasn’t been clear by now, this is a cult, and you’d better fall in line.

Slowly but surely, the Democratic Party is improving in some areas by beginning to disentangle itself from AIPAC and other Israel-aligned lobbying groups and donors. But as long as many people in the party, including all of Democratic leadership, continue taking millions in bribes from these groups and acting as willing puppets for them, we must continue pushing to remove them from power and influence.

The Next Era of World Politics, Handed Over on a Silver Platter

The decline of American world hegemony has really been happening since the 1990s, but this administration has put that decline into hyperdrive. Last year, the EU and even Canada discussed whether they should disentangle themselves from America because of Trump’s tariffs. Those same tariffs pushed longtime rivals China, Japan, and South Korea to unite and trade more with each other, despite their long history of conflict and mistrust. Those tariffs sent a message to the world that the United States is unreliable.

Add in the confused support for Israel’s aggression, the illegal war in Iran, the devastation it is causing there, and the financial pain radiating throughout the world, and you are watching the U.S. hand the next era of world politics to China in real time. China is on the cusp of becoming the world’s preeminent superpower, and they barely have to do anything.

It’s important to understand the long-term damage these actions are causing. Even if Trumpism dies after Trump, the rest of the world may never fully trust the U.S. again because they now know all it takes is another extreme MAGA president to come in and flip the global order upside down again.

While the U.S. Economy Burns

Nearly 2000 years ago, Nero fiddled while Rome burned, and we’re still talking about it today. Now the American economy is in free fall, and Trump’s comments about whether he thinks about Americans struggling economically while trying to end the war in Iran, which is causing so much economic pain, ring as hollow and out of touch as Nero playing the fiddle while his capital burned. Trump literally said he doesn’t think about us at all, not even a little bit.

This war was completely unnecessary, and his Secretary of State, Lil Marco, said the goal of the war in Iran is now to return things to the way they were before his boss illegally started the war. Sometimes I like to play a game where I ask how MAGA would respond if the exact same quote came from Barack Hussein Obama instead of the big orange man. The answer is never the same.

Silly Democrats, Gerrymandering is for Republicans

In April, Virginia had a statewide ballot measure election, and voters chose to allow gerrymandering in order to counter right-wing gerrymandering and election rigging. Despite the will of the people, the Virginia Supreme Court struck it down in a partisan decision. We cannot keep this up if we want to continue pretending we live in a free and fair democracy. On one side, red states are gerrymandering to their Jim Crow hearts’ content, and their Supreme Courts are gleefully allowing it. In blue states, Supreme Courts are saying you can’t do that, effectively allowing one side to cheat while blocking the other from responding in kind. This cannot stand and our union cannot withstand such partisan interference.

NOTE: When Virginians went to go vote on this it made it clear that this was temporary since they were just trying to fight the rank power grab of republicans. The question on the ballot said, “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

Blind Israeli Support

Last week, Banksy released his latest piece in London’s Waterloo Place. Titled Blind Patriotism, the work critiques how people blinded by patriotism, nationalism, and unwavering allegiance to national symbols can lose their ability to think rationally and ultimately lead themselves to their downfall. With that in mind, it’s impossible not to see parallels with those in power who have taken millions in legalized bribes from AIPAC and other Israel-aligned organizations and PACs. They willingly cover their eyes to the atrocities Israel has committed against Palestinians since the 1950s and against its other neighbors.

SCOTUS Destroys Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court of the United States handed down one of the worst decisions since Citizens United. In short, they took an ax to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. By weakening Section 2, SCOTUS has made it easier for states to deny citizens the right to vote based on race. Section 2 prohibits states and localities from racially gerrymandering districts in ways that dilute the voting power of Black and Brown voters. With these changes, it will be harder to challenge those practices in court and hold states accountable for racist partisan gerrymandering. The Voting Rights Act was passed in response to Jim Crow laws and districts, which were designed to suppress the political power of Black Americans and other marginalized groups. Section 2 served as a critical safeguard against discriminatory voting practices and helped ensure more equal access to the ballot.

America’s Hegemonic Heel

The illegal war in Iran has shown the limits of U.S. power. The once thought indestructible and unstoppable U.S. military force has a) not led to stable political results, b) put pressure and strain on our alliances, c) been challenged by the Iranian government and military through their use of asymmetric warfare, and demonstrated America’s inability to bend the world to our liking the way we used to. Despite Iran having a military budget that is dwarfed by that of the U.S., its asymmetric tactics have made it harder for the U.S. to control the conflict and have pushed the world toward a more multipolar system. It is exposing America’s Achilles’ heel, the end of American hegemony may come faster than we thought.

Bear Wins Again!

I missed the terrifying story CNN broke last month, exposing a global ‘rape academy,’ but since learning about it, I’ve had time to sit and think about it. Men are on the internet posting photos and videos, teaching others how to do this, sharing tips on how not to get caught, trading content, encouraging each other, and even selling videos of them raping unconscious women, many of whom are their wives. The more than 20,000 videos had hundreds of thousands of views, and it even spread into private group chats where these men learned how to do what they saw. When you mix this with the fact that our president has been found liable for sexual assault and the Epstein files, it’s hard to deny that the world is filled with, if not run by, men who use their power to exploit or ignore women. “Believe women” isn’t just something you hear and ignore. It’s something you have to take seriously and enact in your life. You need to stop downplaying and questioning the lived experiences women go through.

A.I. Will Kill Us!

According to the United Nations, the world is entering an era of “global water bankruptcy.” The UN says we’re using far more fresh water than nature is replenishing. This is disastrous: “more than half of the world’s large lakes have declined since the early 1990s, while around 35 percent of natural wetlands have been lost since 1970... Nearly three-quarters of the world’s population live in countries classified as water-insecure or critically water-insecure.” (Download the report here) We’ve moved beyond older terms like water stress and water crisis and now find ourselves where “many rivers, lakes, aquifers, wetlands, and glaciers have been pushed beyond tipping points and cannot ‘bounce back’ to past baselines,”(Download the report here) meaning the language of temporary crisis is no longer accurate in many regions. This is catastrophic and must be addressed head-on. This is a human issue, but even if you find yourself on the xenophobic side, addressing this now still benefits your worldview. If you hate migrants and refugees, think about how much worse things will be when their water dries up.

And for the love of Christ, stop using AI. The water it consumes would be cause for alarm in the best of times, but where we are now, it’s unsustainable. “A mid-sized data center can use about 300,000 gallons of water per day, which is roughly equivalent to the daily water use of 1,000 homes.”

Compassionate Bombing

I’m so tired of this Orwellian world we live in. Trump is literally saying that he’s bombing them to death for their own good and that the Iranian people actually love that he’s bombing them. He escalated those idiotic comments with alarming and genocidal quotes, casually saying he’s going to commit mass genocide against millions of innocent Iranian people if they don’t do what he wants. He said, “If it happens, it happens, and if it doesn’t, we’re blowing up the whole country.” This man is a threat to the world, and he must be removed. If you can still justify supporting this absolute psychopath, then you’re a terrible, evil human who wouldn’t have only supported Hitler, but would’ve cheered every time one of the trains took people to the death camps. I am stressing out and holding my breath. Scary times indeed.

Happy Easter, all. Today’s a good day to remember that being Christian is about being Christlike, not whatever modern-day evangelicalism has turned into. Remember to love your enemies, practice humility, choose compassion over judgment, welcome the outcast and the stranger (LGBTQ+ individuals, refugees, and immigrants), and practice radical generosity and wealth distribution. Jesus emphasized loving neighbors, caring for the poor, humility, and spiritual transformation. Modern evangelicals are often seen as emphasizing political influence, cultural warfare, and strict moralistic boundary marking.

Whenever you hear this administration, or any news show pundits, say they have a plan to win this war, let alone to open the Strait of Hormuz soon, understand that me finding oil in the plot of dirt next to my house and ending America’s fuel shortage with that gas is more plausible than that. It’s okay to fall for silly April Fools pranks, but don’t be dumb enough to fall for their lies.

This weekend saw the largest protest in U.S. history, with over 3,300 rallies happening in all 50 states. In St. Paul, Minnesota, just miles away from where federal agents killed Renée Good and Alex Pretti, about 200,000 protesters marched. Even in MAGA strongholds like The Villages in Florida, more than 5,500 demonstrators showed up. Trump’s approval has sunk to January 6 levels, around 33%, and with gas prices rising and the Strait of Hormuz no closer to reopening, that number could drop below 30 soon.

An End in Sight?

The Senate decided by unanimous voice vote to pass funding for most of DHS, except for ICE and Border Patrol. Everything happened in just moments at the crack of dawn. We do not know when the House will vote on this, but I am guessing it will be soon. This entire thing was 100% avoidable, and my heart breaks for the thousands of TSA workers who were held hostage and used as pawns in the GOP’s games. When I was a kid, my parents used to tell me that a federal job is the best kind of job one can have since it will always be funded and comes with great benefits, but the last decade, or so, has shown that may have been true once, but it is the furthest thing from the truth now. I hope the TSA employees who quit due to this shutdown can come back with no problems, I hope they get back pay with interest, and I hope our baboon congressmen can get their act together.
