What's it like to be a Registered Nurse?
Registered Nurses take care of patients, facilitate their fast recovery, and promote and restore their health. They are also responsible for educating their patients' families on recovery, prevention and healthy habits. Registered Nurses are expected to discharge excellent nursing care methods and procedures and outstanding emergency care. In addition, they often provide psychological support to patients and their families. As healthcare practitioners, they are expected to work and cooperate with multidisciplinary teams.Tasks and duties
- Maintaining accurate and complete health care records and reports.
- Administering medications to patients and monitoring them for side effects and reactions.
- Prescribing assistive medical devices and related treatments.
- Recording patient vital signs and medical information.
- Ordering medical diagnostic and clinical tests.
- Monitoring, reporting, and recording symptoms or changes in a patient’s condition.
- Supervising non-intravenous medications.
- Assessing, implementing, planning, or evaluating patient nursing care plans by working with healthcare team members.
- Modifying patient treatment plans as indicated by patient conditions and responses.
How to become a Registered Nurse
To become a Registered Nurse you need to finish a bachelor degree in nursing. This training in social, natural, health sciences and humanities subjects will help you in the practice of nursing.
- Complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). This is a four-year degree program that will teach you the necessary skills and knowledge for health care.
- During the fourth year of the program, you will be required to attend On-the-Job Training (OJT) in different hospital settings and community clinics.
- To become a Registered Nurse in the Philippines, you need to pass the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination. The Board of Nursing conducts the examination under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
- You may pursue a career in various hospital settings and community clinics. You may apply for roles as a Staff Nurse, Community Health Nurse, Hospice Nurse, Geriatric Nurse, Clinical Nurse, School Nurse, Private Nurse, Nurse Educator, or Nurse Practitioner.
- After years of experience, you may be promoted to Head Nurse.
