Chuka: I’m a software developer, or at least that’s what I still call myself even though I’ve been without a stable job for eight months now. I’m 31, first son in my family.

Adaeze: I’m an accountant at a mid-sized firm in Victoria Island. I’m 29, and I’ve been with this man right here for six years now. Sometimes it feels longer. [Laughs]

How did you two meet?

Adaeze: We met at university. I was in accounting, he was in computer science. We had this general studies course together organised by the school church, and I noticed him because he was always asking these really intelligent questions that irritated everyone else but impressed me.

Chuka: The first time I noticed her, she was reading. She was the only person who seemed genuinely interested in studying while everyone else was just there to socialize. I liked that about her immediately.

Adaeze: He didn’t approach me for weeks though. I had to practically engineer a meeting.

Chuka: That’s not true! I was gathering courage.

Adaeze: For three weeks?

Chuka: Well, maybe I needed a push. I’m glad you gave it.

Chuka, I understand you’ve had some career challenges recently?

Chuka: Nine months ago, I was laid off from my job. The company was restructuring, at least that’s what they called it. I got a two-month severance package and suddenly found myself unemployed in one of the worst job markets I’ve seen.

How did that impact you both?

Chuka: It hit me hard. As first son, I have responsibilities. My father passed away when I was 25, and since then, I’ve been supporting my mother and helping with my younger siblings’ education. When I lost my job, I couldn’t just think about myself alone. I had others depending on me.

Adaeze: It was difficult watching him struggle. Chuka is brilliant at what he does, but the market has been terrible. He’s been freelancing, building websites, doing tech whatever he can find. Some months are better than others.

Did this affect your relationship?

Adaeze: I’ve tried to be understanding. I know his family needs him. But yes, it’s been challenging. Our plans kept getting pushed back. Travel plans, moving in together, even marriage conversations. Everything has been on hold.

Chuka: She’s been incredibly patient. I couldn’t even take her out for proper dates for months. There were days I couldn’t afford transportation to her place, and she would come to me instead. She never complained, at least not to me.

Adaeze: I complained to my diary plenty. [They both laugh]

So money has been tight for a while?

Chuka: Very tight. March was particularly bad, I made less than 100k from freelance work.

Adaeze: I started covering most of our outings. Sometimes I would transfer him money for transportation, though he hates accepting it.

Chuka: It’s not easy for a man to be in that position. Where I come from, man is supposed to be the provider. But she never made me feel less than though.

So tell me about the night everything changed. How did this win happen?

Chuka: It was around 2 AM on a Wednesday. I couldn’t sleep, too many worries. My laptop was giving problems, and I needed it for client work. My rent was coming up. My sister needed school fees. I was scrolling through my phone and saw an ad for Gigawin Casino.

Had you gambled before?

Chuka: Not regularly. Maybe once a month, I’d put in small money like 5k or 10k. That night, I had exactly $30 I could risk. And by risk, I mean I would go hungry for a week if I lost it. But My friend won not too long, so I was hoping the universe will smile at me.

What happened when you started playing?

Chuka: I chose Avi because I’d heard it can give big multipliers. At first, nothing special was happening. Then suddenly, the multipliers started climbing—2x, 5x, 10x, then it went crazy: 50x, 100x, 200x. My hands were literally shaking.

When did you tell Adaeze about it?

Chuka: Immediately. It was 2:41 AM, but I called her.

Adaeze: Lmao, I actually thought something terrible had happened! Nobody calls at that hour with good news. When he told me, I couldn’t believe it till he sent me screenshots.

So what happened after the initial excitement?

Adaeze: The very next day, I started thinking about all the things we’ve been putting off. Particularly travel. We’ve been talking about taking a proper vacation since before COVID, but something always comes up.

Chuka: And I started thinking about all the practical things I needed to handle a new laptop of course, since mine keeps crashing, my rent coming up, helping my family, building some emergency savings so we’re not this vulnerable again.

What exactly are you proposing, Adaeze?

Adaeze: I do get his point. I’ve done all the research. We could have an amazing 10-day trip to Santorini for about $4,000, flights, nice accommodation, food, activities, everything. The remaining $2,000 could still go towards Chuka’s immediate needs.

Why Santorini specifically?

Adaeze: We’ve been dreaming about those white buildings against the blue sea for years now. It’s been our screensaver goal. [Shows a saved folder of Santorini images on her phone]

And Chuka, what are your thoughts on this plan?

Chuka: I understand where she’s coming from, this has always been a part of our plan. We deserve a break after everything. But I can’t stop thinking about what happens after the vacation. What if my mother needs emergency surgery next month? What if another job opportunity doesn’t come through? What if we spend this money and go right back to struggling?

So you’re thinking more about saving or investing?

Chuka: Exactly. This money could be seed capital. I could invest some in crypto, take that advanced programming course that would help me charge higher rates for freelance work, fix my laptop, clear some debts, and still have a small emergency fund.

Adaeze: He’s even talking about putting some back into Gigawin to try winning more. That’s what really concerns me.

Is that true, Chuka?

Chuka: I mean, it worked once, right? I’m not saying gamble it all away, just maybe a small portion with a strict limit.

Adaeze: See what I mean? This could be our one chance to create some beautiful memories together, and he’s thinking about gambling more.

You’ve been together for six years. How would you describe your relationship?

Adaeze: We’ve been through a lot together. I was there when his father’s death anniversary would hit him hard. I’ve understood when family responsibilities took priority. I’ve never complained about the money he sends home.

Chuka: She’s been my rock. When I lost my job, I was so ashamed. In our culture, a man without steady income feels like a failure. There were days I couldn’t even look her in the eye. But she never made me feel less than.

Has money been an issue before?

Adaeze: Not like this. We’ve always been practical about our finances. We don’t live beyond our means. But this feels different. This money came unexpectedly, like a blessing.

Chuka: We’ve never had this amount of disposable income at once. Usually, any extra money already has ten purposes assigned to it before it even lands.

Would you say you’re good at compromising?

Chuka: [Hesitates] Generally, yes. But I admit, with financial decisions, I tend to be very cautious. Growing up with financial instability makes you that way.

Adaeze: We’re both reasonable people. We’ve never had major fights about money before. But this situation is testing us because the stakes feel higher and I do tell him before, he is too cost conscious.

Let me ask you both something deeper: what does partnership mean to you, especially financial partnership?

Adaeze: To me, partnership means we share both the struggles and the windfalls. I’ve stood by him when he had nothing. I’ve supported his dreams even when they didn’t include me directly. I believe that in a true partnership, we should be able to prioritize us sometimes our happiness, our experiences, our bond.

Chuka: I agree with the sharing part. But I also believe that as partners, we need to make decisions that secure our future, not just enjoy the present. I want to give her the world, but I need to be practical about how we use this opportunity.

What do you think is influencing your perspective on this, Chuka?

Chuka: Being the first son in a Nigerian family shapes how you view money. It’s never just about you. There’s always someone else to consider. Plus, these past months have been humbling. I never want to be that financially vulnerable again.

And Adaeze, what’s driving your desire for this trip?

Adaeze: Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever get to just be us, not Chuka the first son, not Adaeze the supportive girlfriend. Just us, creating memories together. Six years, and we’ve never had a proper vacation. Always something more important, more pressing. At what point do we say, “Let’s live a little”?

The Middle Ground: Is There One? Have you tried finding a compromise?

Chuka: We’re trying. That’s why we’re here talking to you. We both want what’s best for us as a couple, but we have different views on what that looks like right now.

Adaeze: I’ve suggested we split it—$3,000 each. He can save or invest his portion however he wants, and my portion goes toward a more modest trip. Maybe not Santorini, but somewhere nice, even locally.

How do you feel about that suggestion, Chuka?

Chuka: It’s reasonable. I’m not against travel completely. I just worry about the timing and the amount. Maybe we could do a shorter trip, something under $1,500 total, and use the rest more practically?

Adaeze: See, it always comes back to cutting down on the one thing I’m asking for.

Chuka: That’s not fair. I’m trying to find middle ground.

Do you both feel like this decision is a reflection of your commitment to each other?

Adaeze: Sometimes it feels that way. Like if he really valued our relationship, creating memories together would be a priority.

Chuka: That’s not it at all, babe. I want our relationship to thrive long-term. Sometimes that means making tough choices now for better stability later.

I get the both of you sha. So, where do you see yourselves in the next few years?

Chuka: I want to be back in a stable job, hopefully with some investments growing on the side. I want us to be in a position where we don’t have to debate over every expenditure because we have enough.

Adaeze: I want us to finally move forward with the plans we’ve been discussing for years. Like us living together, marriage, building a life that’s truly ours. And yes, I want us to have experiences to look back on fondly.

Does this decision impact those future plans?

Chuka: I don’t think it should. Whatever we decide, we’ll get through it together.

Adaeze: I hope so. But I also think how we handle this says something about our priorities and values. And that matters for our future.

What’s the best outcome you’re hoping for?

Chuka: A decision we can both feel good about, one that gives us some joy now without compromising our security later.

Adaeze: I just want to feel like we’re partners in all this, not opponents. And yes, I want to see those white buildings against the blue sea with him.

I’m Valeria, a data analyst studying information technology and health informatics. I’m more like a tired girl in STEM.

What does your partner do? How old are they, and how did you guys meet?

My partner is a student like me. We are the same age. We met in school – same department and all.

Who made the first move, and how did it happen? Was it love at first sight or something that developed over time?

At first, we weren’t exactly close. We just mostly said our hellos and goodbyes. It was a classmate-to-classmate relationship in the beginning; we weren’t friends at all.

Now it’s getting interesting – who fell first?

I think she did. 😂 I fell harder, that’s for sure.

How long have you been in a relationship, and what’s been the highlight so far?

It’s been about six months. I would say it’s been mostly rosy, and I’ve really gotten to open this part of myself to someone I only see a future with. We have different interests and perspectives on some issues, but we’re alike in a whole lot of ways.

What I love about everything is how secure it feels. It’s this whole thing of taking life together and working towards the future we want for the both of us.

But I worry sometimes. I have crippling anxiety, and that gets in the way a lot of times. Being in this country where heteronormativity is the imposed standard, my dreams are always about making it out of here to a place where we’d feel “free.” When those dreams come off as blurry, even for a second, I lose it.

What’s your partner’s quirkiest habit that you secretly (or openly) love?

She does this thing where she picks up gestures that I perform often. Then she’ll play them out in front of me, and I’ll ask, “Do I really do all that?” 😭😂 Then we’ll laugh about it.

Being a queer person in Nigeria is kind of tricky. How has that been for you?

Personally, I have come to accept my truth and live in it, and she has too. We don’t owe anyone a “coming out,” so we don’t plan to do that.

We’re not overly religious, and that’s a win for us. I just want us to make it out of here really quickly.

What have been some of the most meaningful moments in your relationship so far?

There have been many. But the one that really stood out for me was our routine “check-ins.”

We talk about us, and she usually asks me if I feel like we’re moving too fast or if there’s been any issue we need to discuss and address. I found it really beautiful when she started doing that because I feel like conversations like that are crucial for a healthy relationship. Trying to find out if you’re loving your partner properly and vice versa has been one of the most meaningful moments in this relationship so far.

What does love mean to both of you, and how do you express it in your daily lives?

Love to both of us means taking your person’s hand in yours as you both navigate life together.

I get that we’re really young and all, and there’s so much life ahead of us. But honestly, I wouldn’t see myself doing this with anyone else but her.

We live close in school, so there’s a lot of physical interaction most times. I like to think that we could just be together in a space, doing our own individual thing, and I’d feel really contented and connected to her.

Are there any misconceptions people have about your relationship, and how do you handle them?

We just leave most people assuming whatever. The only people who really know about us are our very close friends.

What do you love most about being in a relationship together?

I love that I’m myself with her. I love her, in the entirety of it all. I love that we’re friends, and we have similar views on a lot of topics.

It’s a me-and-her-versus-everything-else, and I love that.

If she’s reading this, what would you like to tell her?

😂😂 I’d tell her that I’m going to get her all the New Balance shoes she loves someday… every single one.

Hello, I’m Lati. A fashion designer and currently learning how to code.

Take us back to how you met your partner.

I wasn’t even supposed to take a bike that day. I flagged one down, and he was already sitting in the middle. We just rode together like strangers do.

When we got to my stop, he paid for both of us. I thanked him.

We exchanged numbers after that. It turned out we lived around the same area. One call became another, then another. He started taking me out and checking on me all the time. At the time, it felt nice. Like someone really saw me.

What was he like then?

He looked like he had his life together.

I was 19, and he was 25 and already had his own house. Back then, that meant a lot to me. It made him look serious. Stable. Like somebody who was ready for marriage.

Was there anything that worried you early on?

The religion thing.

He was Christian, and I’m Muslim. That was my biggest hesitation. But he kept saying, “You practice yours, I’ll practice mine.” He made it sound so simple.

I believed him.

Did it stay that way?

No.

Honestly, after we got married, everything changed.

Everything, like what?

I got pregnant around a year after we met, and we got married soon after that. That’s when I started seeing another side of him.

The church issue started almost immediately. It stopped being a suggestion and became pressure. If I didn’t go, there would be arguments. Sometimes worse.

I was beaten while pregnant because I refused to go to church.

Even saying it now sounds unreal to me.

So sorry. And outside of that, what was your experience ?

He cheated a lot.

Not even secretly. People knew. And anytime I complained, somehow the conversation would turn back on me. Like I was wrong for finding out instead of him being wrong for doing it.

How did all of this affect you physically or financially?

At the beginning, he helped me start my tailoring business, and I was genuinely happy about it because tailoring was something I knew how to do well.

But after marriage, things changed. Sometimes there’d be no money for food, and I’d have to take from the business money to feed the household.

Little by little, everything just dried up.

You have children now. How has that experience been?

I have three daughters.

And some people can be very cruel about that. Like giving birth to girls is some kind of failure. Sometimes the comments hurt more than people realise.

But I never regret my daughters.

Never.

If there’s anything I regret, it’s the man I had them with.

Where are you now?

Trying to rebuild my life slowly.

I’m learning how to code now.

And I’m speaking up more now too. About the church pressure, about everything. Before, I used to just keep quiet.

I still don’t have everything figured out, but I’m trying.

And honestly, I have three girls watching me. That alone is enough reason not to give up.

Hello! It’s Nabeelah. Today’s guest is giving us something a little different, a little about her relationship.

Hi, I’m Funke. 25, I work in operations here in Lagos, and I do have too many opinions and not enough people who can handle them.

Nice to meet you Funke, so tell us about your partner and how you two meet.

His name is Tobi. We went to the same university but we weren’t close at all, just in the same class WhatsApp group. Most times the group is just there, but the moment anything happens on the internet, everyone is alive.

So this one evening, someone posted about that musician, the one that cheated on his wife and the wife went public. The group started going mad, people were sharing screenshots, and taking sides.

And then Tobi typed something arount the fact that the wife cannot keep all of that to herself. That she knew who she married, she signed up for this.

Lmaoo. And you disagreed?

Yes and I had many things to say. But I wasn’t going to say them in the group, I don’t like performing disagreement like that, it becomes noise and nothing actually gets said.

So I went to his DM instead. I said I saw his message and I wanted to understand how he arrived there.

How did he respond and what were you expecting him to say?

Honestly, I was expecting him to be defensive, but he wanted to understand my POV.

I told him what I thought was actually underneath what he said, that women are expected to take these things quietly, I mean cheating, abuse, etc and the moment she spoke up she became the problem. We went back and forth. And somewhere in the middle of it he said he thinks he was being reductive.

Most men would have doubled down or left me on read, so I was wowed.

So from that one DM?

We just kept talking. He asked something, I replied, he replied back. By the time I looked up it was past midnight and we had gone from the musician to his family to my job to why Lagos traffic is a spiritual attack on the human spirit. I laughed at something he said and then I thought, oh. Okay.

When did the talking become something else?

I noticed I was starting to edit what I wanted to say before I sent it. Like I wanted him to find me interesting. I don’t do that with just anybody.

And then he called one evening and said he had something to tell me. I already had a feeling. I told him if it’s what I think, just say it clearly. He said it clearly. I said okay.

Ha. Just okay? You are different o.

Lol. I’m not going to be doing shakara on top of something I wanted. That would be wasteful.

So, what is Tobi like?

A lot, he thinks before he talks. Which is sometimes annoying because I want an immediate reaction and he’ll go quiet for a moment before he responds. But it means when he says something he actually means it.

He’s stubborn too. He’ll disagree with you and sit in the disagreement even when you’ve made a good point. He comes around eventually but he takes his time about it.

And he can be very funny without trying to be funny. Which is the best kind.

Hmm. What’s the hard part?

He’s leaving soon for his Masters in the UK.

We both know it’s coming and we talk around it more than we talk about it. One of us will mention it and then we’ll move past it quickly. We haven’t sit to ask what it actually means.

Which is what exactly?

What we’re doing. What this looks like when there’s that kind of distance. Like are we committing to something or letting it go.

Lagos to the UK is not a small thing. I’ve seen how that goes with other people, then life happens, and the calls get shorter, and one day you’re texting instead of calling, and then texting less, and eventually nothing, and nobody even made a big deal out of it and I’m kind of afraid of that.

Have you told him that?

I told him about us fading part. He said he doesn’t want that. I said I don’t either. And then we put on something to watch and left the conversation there.

Lol. So it’s still open.

We have until September or so, so yes.

What is your best memory so far?

I was cooking one evening (Marugbo Soup) and I forgot to add something early and the whole soup went off. I was annoyed because I had guests coming. I told him on the phone and he asked me to describe the soup. List the ingredient, what I’d done, in what order. And then he walked me through how to fix it.

It was such a small thing. But the way he focused on it, I thought, this person is useful. Which sounds like a terrible thing to say about somebody you like but I mean it in the best way.

Lol, what is your last words for the audience?

Ha, stay wicked.

Lol, tbh I can’t give advice, I haven’t figured this out myself.

But I’ll say, if someone says something that bothers you, go to the person directly. The conversation you have in private is always more honest than anything either of you would say in front of an audience.

That’s how I found out Tobi thinks before he speaks and knows how to talk a soup back to life over a phone call.

This was shared with us almost a year ago and it broke us open in the best way. So we’re bringing it back because this kind of love deserves more than one moment.MJ: I’m not sure it counts, but when I was critically ill, my family took care of me. My dad, on the other hand, is very openly affectionate and has pretty much done it all: given me his phone so I could use it for school while he had no phone, given me his laptop too, stayed with me when I was hospitalized, and driven hours because I said I was craving donkunu. He went out of his way that year to give me a gift, and I kept the envelope.

Juliet Obaniyi: One time in school, I was very sick and couldn’t get anything done. A friend came over, got me fruits on his way, cooked for me, waited for me to eat it all, did all my dishes, and made sure my room was clean before leaving. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it really meant a lot to me because I didn’t really experience all that growing up.

There was also a time when I was sick and my Muslim friend followed me to the hospital. I was shivering and couldn’t sit up, and it was taking ages for the doctor to attend to me. She removed her scarf 😭 and wrapped me up with it. Yes, I didn’t hear the end of it after, but at that moment when she did that, it really touched my heart.

Ada: If I start to talk, I may probably start crying. But I was seeing this guy who is a tech bro in 2020. When the man who assaulted me started harassing me and I was having panic attacks and feeling paranoid, the tech bro in question gave me money to get a hotel, and he was on a call with me for close to six hours while I cried and cried.

He got someone to come take me home, and though we are no longer together, he is still very much in my life. He also linked me to his girlfriend early this year—she works in a cereal company and gave me my highest-paying influencing contract to date. He won’t want his name mentioned, but he is one of the kindest men I have the privilege of knowing.

DAE: I wrote a short story and shared it with my best friend. I had no intention of selling it (I didn’t even think anyone would want to buy it) or letting others read it. I only wanted her to see it because she had read it once and encouraged me to complete it. I sent it to her, and she asked if she could share it with some friends. I said yes. I went to sleep and woke up to numerous credit alerts. She posted an excerpt on her status and said people could get the complete story for a certain amount, and people actually enjoyed it enough to want to read the full story, and they paid. It was not just kind; it was reassuring, and I started completing my stories more.

Some friendships start with a grand gesture. Others begin quietly over a shared document in a writers’ group, a glance across a university cafeteria, or a Week of Prayer. This one started like that. And seven years later, it is still one of the most important relationships in Angel Nduka-Nwosu’s life.

Today, she is here to talk about Ibi, a friend she made at Babcock University who she describes as a constant part of her life and her success story.

We sat down with Angel to talk about what it means to be chosen, to be held, and to love loudly.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Angel Nduka-Nwosu. I’m a writer, editor, community manager and journalist. I am also a performance poet and stage actor in addition to a bunch of things. I cook and love reading books and talking about women, female friendships and self-development. I currently work as the editorial lead at a magazine and love attending exhibitions at art galleries. The dream career for me is working in a publishing house as an editor or with an agency as a literary agent.

What type of relationship are you here to talk about?

I’m here to talk about my friendship with Ibi, a dear friend of mine. We met in university, and it has been almost seven years of friendship with her. She lives in the US now, and she’s a constant part of my life and my success story.

Tell us about Ibi. Who is she?

Ibi is a writer, playwright, and PhD student. She’s also one of the smartest and most versatile women I know. She has an initiative where she fundraises school fees for low-income children, and she also donates pads and books to women in need. She has also donated sanitary aid materials to women in prisons too.

When I think of her, I think of someone with an unrelenting heart of gold who always tries to see the good in humanity.

Oh — she also likes Maryland Cookies and puff puff.

Describe her in three words.

Courageous. Strategic. Sweet.

How did you two meet?

We met in school. We both went to Babcock University, and someone had shared my work with her on a writers’ group. She checked out my socials and then introduced herself to me in person when I was eating in the cafeteria alone one time. Then we started hanging out with each other during an event called Week of Prayer.

But I would say we got really closer during the lockdown and bonded over feminism, literature, and things like that.

What was your first impression of her?

My first impression of her was that she was a happy and curious individual.

What did the lockdown period look like for you two?

We were having calls and we were texting too.

Seven years is a long time. Have you two ever gone through a rough patch?

No, we haven’t.

She lives in the US now. How do you maintain the friendship across the distance?

By intentionally sending voice notes and funny reels and checking in on each other.

What is your best memory of her?

My best memory of her has to be the way she held my hand on a phone call while I dealt with the aftermath of being assaulted. She was with me for most of the day on the phone, and when I think of reasons why I must thrive, I think of that incident.

I also like how she got me a spa voucher for my birthday.

What has this friendship taught you?

This friendship has taught me that life is truly about having community and those you can rely on. It has also taught me the importance of loving loudly because life is fickle. What makes life worth living are the connections we build.

For women who feel like they don’t have their “Ibi” yet, what would you say to them?

Make active steps towards that and don’t beat yourself up for not yet finding that friend. What matters is that you are making steps towards that goal. Be it attending events or putting yourself out there, what matters are the steps you are making.

Is there anything you want Ibi to know?

I want Ibi to know that she is a ball of light, and I would always appreciate her for what she does in my life.

Aww. What’s the hardest thing about being together?

Adaeze: He worries too much. About everything. About money, about plans, about the future. And sometimes I just want to exist in today, and he’s already three months ahead and having anxiety.

Emeka: Someone has to plan.

Adaeze: Not at 11pm, though. Not when I’m trying to sleep.

Emeka: For me, she doesn’t ask for help. She’ll be carrying something heavy, and she won’t say anything. I have to notice. And sometimes I don’t notice fast enough, and then she’s already dealt with it alone and I feel useless.

Adaeze: It’s not that I don’t trust him. I just don’t like being a burden.

Emeka: You’re not a burden, Ada.

Adaeze: (quietly) I know, thank you.

Best memory together so far?

Adaeze: Okay so this is small but early in the relationship, I had a client in his area. And I finished late and I was hungry and I didn’t want to buy food from outside. So I called him and said I was nearby, do you have food.

Emeka: She showed up at with her kit bag and her attitude.

Adaeze: I was tired! And he had cooked, properly cooked. I don’t know if he does this every day then or if God timed it, but I sat down and ate, and he just let me be.

Emeka: She fell asleep on my chair after.

Adaeze: I was exhausted! But I woke up and he was just on his laptop minding his business. I looked at him and thought okay. This one is safe.

Emeka: (smiling) You never told me that.

Adaeze: I’m telling you now, on camera, in front of strangers

Where do you see this going?

Emeka: Marriage of course.

Hyperbridge claimed it was unhackable but Playboi called it a bluff and within days, an hacker went to work

The cry of a wounded soldier was heard.

Hyperbridge has been hit

So how was this hack done?

The hacker(s) forged a fake cross-chain message, took control of the bridge contract, minted a huge amount of fake tokens (about 1 billion DOT) and sold them very quickly

Further update show that the system was designed to verify that every transaction moving across chains was genuine.

However, the part of the system responsible for this verification failed to properly examine the information it was given. Because of this, attackers were able to submit carefully crafted inputs that should have been rejected, but weren’t.

Hyperbridge released a statement on the 16th of April confirming the breach and noting how much had been lost; $2.5 million

Noting the hack stemmed from a vulnerability in the Solidity based Merkle Mountain Range.

My name is Mr. T. I work in tech, and outside of work, I’m a husband and a father doing the long-distance thing while based in East Africa.

So how did you and your wife first meet? Take us back to the beginning.

We never really met in school. We knew each other by proxy. I knew a guy whose sister was her friend, and she told me about her once. What she told me got me curious. She also knew me through my sister, most people saw us together and even thought we were going to get married. The one time I clearly remember seeing her in school was when she walked past the front of my hostel on her way to the classroom area. Another time, I tried to see her during a football competition I was told she’d be playing in. I didn’t get to see her play, or maybe I just couldn’t recognize her on the pitch. One of the two.

So you were both in school at the same time. How did things develop from there? Were you together before she left?

Neither of us was emotionally invested enough to be thinking about holding on when she was leaving Nigeria. She actually made an attempt to apply for both of us for the master’s program, but I didn’t follow through. So when she got the admission, we talked and agreed that three years was too long to wait for each other in that time, either of us could meet someone to marry. So practically, we gave each other permission to find a partner. Three years later, both of us were still single.

That’s a very mature arrangement. How did it actually feel in practice, was it freeing or quietly painful?

It wasn’t painful at all — it was just honesty and understanding. It was freeing. Neither of us felt like they needed the other’s permission to take a shot at someone new. I even made a half-hearted attempt to reapply for the scholarship program, even though I wasn’t interested in further education at the time. The freedom worked well. We still spoke whenever we could, and we’d even talk about the people we were meeting.

During her master’s, what did staying in touch look like for you? What kept the connection alive even with the distance?

Staying in touch wasn’t an obligation for either of us. It was like two random people chatting occasionally. We also had some things we did together — she was learning some programming basics, so she’d ask me tech-related questions. And there was always the occasional random gist.

Was there a specific moment—a call, a visit, a feeling — when you knew that when she came back, marriage was the only option?

Not really. What brought marriage into the picture was the fact that by the time she was wrapping up her program, we were both still single. She brought it up jokingly, like, “Guy, both of us are still single. What if we worked towards marriage?” I told her to give me 24 hours to cut things off with a woman I’d been chasing for almost a year. The next day, I replied with “game on.”

What is the one thing about her that no amount of distance has ever been able to change in how you feel about her?

Before marriage, we were deliberate about not getting too emotionally invested, we avoided voice calls, let alone video calls, except for important moments, like the day I went to see her family. But after marriage, what has never changed is trust and love. I know for certain that she makes sincere efforts to keep loving me and the children.

Tell me about a memory with her that still makes you smile — something small or something big, anything that stays with you.

Maybe this one. She was pregnant with our first child, and neither of us knew it yet. We were at home playing wrestling. Thank God the kid was fine. [laughs]

You’re out of the country; she’s in Nigeria with the kids. Can you walk me through what a normal week looks like for your family?

It varies from day to day, but the one constant is that whenever I’m indoors, we’re mostly on video calls for hours, even if we’re not saying anything. She has a timetable she put together for the kids, based on their learning plan. They’re homeschooled, so there’s structure to their days. For anything she needs to get or do, we have people to help, and sometimes I just make a few calls to sort things out remotely. For finances, she has access to my card, and I send money to her account regularly — I just keep asking when it needs topping up. Recently, my daughter started karate, so she goes to the center four times a week. And in the middle of all of that, my wife still carves out time for her own art; she’s currently into calligraphy, both English and Arabic scripts.

How do you stay present as a husband and father from that far?

It’s not easy from a distance, because some things are only possible in person. But we plan what the kids do together, we call every day, and I join some of the activities at home over video call. Whenever I get the chance, I go back home.

Have the kids ever asked why dad isn’t always home? How do you handle that?

They didn’t need to ask, we told the one who’s old enough to understand. We’re in communication every day, so it doesn’t feel like an absence. The little one doesn’t quite grasp it yet, but he’s catching on.

Have you two ever hit a rough patch where the distance felt like too much? What got you through it?

It’s been so long since we had any real misunderstanding; I can’t even remember the last one. Alhamdulillah. Maybe it’s because we resolve things as soon as they come up. In terms of distance specifically, it’s never directly caused a rough patch other than just missing each other.

If a younger version of you came to you today asking whether long-distance love is worth it, what would you tell him?

I’d tell him not to focus on love. Focus on sincerely finding the right partner. Everything else, love included, will follow.
