It’s Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and as a man, I’ve been very aware of my mental health this month. There’s a men’s meetup THIS Saturday and I’d love to see you there.

On the comedy front, I’m in a competition at Comedy Works downtown next Wednesday. I’m also no longer running a show at Cerebral Brewing. Be sure to still support that brewery and local comedy in general, but if you know of any venues that might be great for a comedy show, get at me.

Saturday 6.20 - How Are You
Sati Coffee / Sloans Lake

June is men’s mental health awareness month. Are you a man? Do you know any men? Well, if you do, ask them how they’re doing, and maybe let them know about my meetup.

We’ll be meeting THIS Saturday at Sati Coffee. If it’s not one thousand degrees outside we’ll go on a walk around the lake, but if it is too hot, we can just suck on ice cubes under the shade of the aforementioned tree (or just sit in the coffee shop and talk).

My nonprofit now has a donation link too. If you’re interested in supporting this little venture I’m running, I’d really appreciate it. The funds will be used towards marketing efforts to increase exposure and expand impact, and building a website too!

Wednesday 6.24 - New Faces Competition
Comedy Works Downtown

Hello! Yours truly will be performing in a comedy competition at Comedy Works downtown on Wednesday, June 24th and boy howdy, would I love to have you there supporting me. If you’re interested in coming, all you need to do is call the Comedy Works downtown box office, say you want to come to the new faces competition for Nick Ellis, and bingo bango you get free tickets (still two item minimum).

The only condition is for the love of God, laugh at my jokes if you find them funny, and to sit there cross-armed with a frown on your face, shaking your head in disappointment for the rest of the 65 minutes of the show during the other comedians’ performances. Sound good? Great!

How have you guys been? Having a good summer so far? I sure hope so.

I’m sitting here on a Thursday night in my Airbnb in Chicago. Is the Airbnb nice? No, like a tinder date the pictures were quite deceiving. But was it at least clean when I got here? Also no!

It’s not lost on me that the day of my six-year anniversary of living in Denver was the day that I packed my bags to get out of town for a few weeks. I’ve felt an itch lately for some changes and hopefully this helps me figure out where I need to scratch.

Unrelated and yet somewhat related, but I’ve been inspired by so many creatives in my life lately. Wednesday night, I watched my friend film his first full-length comedy special and man was it a treat getting to see him pour his heart into his craft. Another friend wrote a script from a book he’d written and his movie made it into Sundance. I have friends creating silly sketches about David Attenborough in their backyards, writing their first novels while drinking beers at bars, creating rad posters for comedy shows around town, and it’s hard not to want to pick up a pen (or in more modern terms, open up your laptop) and get to clickety clackin, so that’s what I’m doing here.

I wound up taking a writing class because of all this inspiration and during it, I wrote a poem… which is actually something that I used to do quite frequently when I was in third grade (can you tell I was bullied?). I’d write poems accompanied by little doodles in my Pikachu notebook and then when 9/11 happened, I wrote a poem that was read over the morning announcements at Dag Hammerskjold Elementary School… because that’s exactly what the students and faculty of a now defunct school in Parma Ohio needed in the immediate wake of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, words typed together by a ten-year-old emo boy likely wearing baggy JNCO shorts.

Did any other readers ask their parents for Shel Silverstein’s ‘When the Sidewalk Ends’ for their birthday when they were ten? No? Just me? Well, if anyone’s wondering how I wound up in therapy, I think there’s a straight line from excitedly unwrapping a book of poems at a fourth-grade birthday party at a bowling alley to the psychologist’s couch in your thirties.

Notice that I didn’t write anything about my actual job. I work in IT for a bank, preventing crime.

And that’s not sexy. Do you know what is though? Helping others. Making people laugh. Being a good man and a good person. Lifting people (and weights) up. Expanding your horizons. And that’s what I want out of this one beautiful life of mine.

How have you guys been? I’ve been gosh damn good. I just got back from Alaska a few weeks ago and man, it was unlike any place I’d ever been. I saw glaciers, skied, and even watched the aurora borealis dance around the sky. Plus the shows were great, but who cares about that part.

Next month I hit the dusty trail and am shipping off to Chicago for a few weeks where I’ll be doing a bunch of shows, setting a new world record for the most hot dogs consumed while wearing 5” inseam shorts, and am going to hunt down Steve Bartman to give him a much needed hug. Wish he would’ve done that in the 2016 World Series but he was just a bit early to the party.

What started as an idea that spawned out of a breakup has turned into a fantatic support group for men across the Denver metro area.

Each month I’m amazed at who shows up and the kindness that people show to one another. Last month, we even had a member bring his 8 year old son because he wanted to show him what positive masculinity looks like in a group setting. (Him and I mostly talked about a dream he had where he had to save his father and family from an orca who swam under a bridge and into his hot tub, so you could say it was pretty special for both of us.)

Well, summer came and went. Did you have fun? I know I sure did. Beyond my trip abroad, I made a couple of journeys back home to see family and also really enjoyed my time here in Colorado. Did I get to the mountains as much as I would have liked? Not at all… but I did increase my screen time by a solid 30%, and that’s… not something I would recommend whatsoever.

7/13 The Funday Comedy Show - Cerebral Brewing

Dadddyyys home! I’m ECSTATIC to announce that I’m going to be hosting a Sunday night comedy show at Cerebral Brewing in the West Highlands.

For those of you who are newer here, I used to run a monthly comedy show in this space in 2023 when the building was occupied by Oasis Brewing.

I don’t have an exact time the show will start yet, or a poster even, but I do want to let you guys know about the event so we can pack this f*cker out, just like you guys did last time.

Local favorite and my dear friend Ben Roy is headlining the show. He has a special on HULU, Disney+, and has been on Comedy Central as well. Carmen Morales (HBO Max, Comedy Central) is featuring, and the very talented Helen Driesen will be opening.

5/15 HI-FIVE COMEDY

April’s show ruled and we’re excited to run it back again this month with Comedy Works Pro Matt Cobos (watch a clip here) as our headliner. He’s the definition of a good time - think if Andrew W.K. (and his love for partying) became a comedian. He’ll be joined by our very funny friends Jared Chandler and Comedy Works regular Hannah Popkin.

5/21 Comedy Works New Faces Competition

Alright team, this one’s important. I’m competing in a comedy competition at Comedy Works downtown on May 21st. A lot has happened in the past month. The National Forest Service had its jobs cut, the stock market is in the dumpster, and I’ve found out that Trader Joe’s has once again discontinued its instant cold brew…

HI-FIVE COMEDY 4/10

March’s show was a blast… especially once we got through the minor sound difficulties in the beginning (my bad, you guys. Apparently you can have three sound checks and still be in for a surprise or two once the curtain drops). Josh Donoghue, Grayson Garcia, and I have an all-new lineup for this show. BK Sharad, a Comedy Works pro who has a Don’t Tell Comedy special, will headline this show. He’ll be joined by a couple of my favorite comics, local comic Erin Rose and ATL Laughing Skull Comedy Club regular Jacob Jonas. HOW ARE YOU 4/12

Last month I held my first men’s mental health meetup which I’d coined ‘How Are You’. I received a lot of positive feedback and really kind comments from it and had a few men attend, so I’m running it back this Saturday.

For anyone new here, the gist of it is to meet up, maybe pair or group off depending on the amount of people, and just walk and talk about any struggles that you might be dealing with. NICK ELLIS + FRIENDS 4/12

Like Jack Black on SNL this past week, I’m BACK. Nick Ellis + Friends will be held at one of my favorite local breweries, Hogshead Brewing, just north of Sloans Lake in the West Highlands Neighborhood. They just finished their built-in patio, which will make for a perfect environment to enjoy some standup comedy. The brewery is unlike any other I’ve been to in Denver, as they specialize in cask British ales, and also have cocktails, kegged beer, and hot food available too. Ben Bryant, who runs the Denver Comedy Underground, has been on Adult Swim, and seen in the Huffington Post, will headline the show. This will be my first show at this venue and I’d really love to pack it out, so please come if you’re available and let’s enjoy our Saturday nights together. [RSVP Here]

The new year brought some new changes and I’d like to let you know about two events coming up in the next couple of weeks. These events are ones in nature that I haven’t produced before and while I’m somewhat nervous, I’m also excited.

HOW ARE YOU 3/1

The first is actually not related to comedy at all. It’s called ‘How Are You' and it’s a free men’s mental health meetup that will take place this upcoming Saturday, March 1st, at Sloans Lake. More details are in the eventbrite, but the gist of it is to meetup, maybe pair or group off depending on the amount of people, and just walk and talk about any struggles that you might be dealing with. I’ve been pretty lucky to have a supportive group of guys to help me out during any times of need and I figured I’d try to do my small part to lend a helping hand to anyone who’s in a similar boat trying to paddle seemingly upcurrent. In my experience, it helps if you have a helping hand or two paddling the oars. [this is all a metaphor by the way. we won’t literally be paddling around sloans lake, but all this boat talk does make me want to rewatch the very average movie Without A Paddle]. [RSVP Here]

HI-FIVE COMEDY 3/13

The second event is a little more in my wheelhouse as I’m bringing comedy back to the Edgewater Beer Garden. This time, I won’t be hosting alone, but local comics [and a couple of my best pals] Josh Donoghue and Grayson Garcia will be joining me in producing this fun and free event. We have a great lineup, headlined by John Novosad, aka Hippieman. He's a pro at Comedy Works who has made multiple appearances on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and has also appeared on Bryon Allen’s nationally syndicated Comedy.TV. How are you doing this Christmas season? I hope you’re doing well.

First and foremost I want to say thanks so much to everyone who’s come to my shows, put up with these emails, and is kind enough to donate to the comics. And to 14er Brewing of course for having been the new homebase for my show. To say it’s appreciated is the understatement of the century and I hope you all enjoy the end of year; hopefully surrounded by loved ones and laughter.

As for how I’m doing, I gotta say folks, I’m down bad. In case you aren’t aware, 14er has unfortunately boarded up.

I don’t think anyone has had a streak like me. Almost like clockwork. In the last three years, I’ve held shows at Epic Brewing, Oasis Brewing, and 14er Brewing, which all announced the closures of their breweries in 2022, 2023, and 2024 respectively.

So, what’s next you may ask?

Well, ol’ boy’s got a couple of things in the works. Maybe even a little collaboration with some friends on coproducing a show together, I don’t know. And hopefully, for the love of the Beer Gods, I won’t be writing this same type of letter next year.

In the meantime, I’d love if you:

A. Supported a local brewery by grabbing some beers with some friends. And have one for me too since I’m banned from every brewery within 15 miles of Denver city limits.

B. Subscribed to my Instagram to keep up to date on anything comedy-related.

C. Checked out and subscribed to The Street Satire; a weekly newsletter that I write about satirical business news. I’ve written about Build-A-Bear partnering with Ozempic, Wells Fargo’s Commitment to Fraud, and most recently, Myspace acquiring TikTok.

How are we all doing out there? Good? Bad? So-so?

As for me, I’m doing pretty good actually. Have had some fun shows around town and I even got to head up to Wyoming to feature for my bud Ben Roy the other weekend. What a time!

This month's email will be a little bit different given that I have multiple events I want to make you aware of and that, as you can see, I’m sending it via substack.

Have you had a good summer so far? I know I have but dang has it been busy. And that’s only going to continue. Along the way though it’s important to make time for not only work, but also play.

My girlfriend and I are thinking of taking the ol stand up paddleboard out on the open waters this upcoming weekend and then checking out a new spot for a drink. Any recommendations around the west side of Denver are more than welcomed… I’d say they’re even encouraged.

Now, let’s get down to brass tax.

First off, Wednesday July 17th, I am at Comedy Works Downtown for their New Faces Competition. I would really appreciate your support on the show. My dad says I can't come back home to visit unless I advance to the second round and I really want to go to my cousin's wedding in September, so you see my predicament here.

Numero dos, as we say. There is a super fun event that myself and musical artist Cous are hosting at Emporium Brewing in Berkley. It's our third annual Comedy + Cous variety show and it, too, is free. I'll be doing a half hour of standup and Cous will be performing about an hour of music. Have some fun with us, won't you?

Third, I'm in a fundraiser for Saint Jude's Children's Hospital in Centennial July 21st. Myself and other comedians will be on the hardwood trying our best in a basketball tournament to raise funds at the Basketball Social House. It will undoubtedly be the worst basketball and funniest broadcasting you will have experienced.
