The Wall Street Journal’s editorial on government ownership of artificial intelligence companies reveals a disturbing political reality: when it comes to economic policy, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are increasingly reading from the same playbook. Both now embrace the notion that the federal government should acquire equity stakes in private AI firms, differing only in the size and method of the takeover.

For decades, Sanders has championed government ownership and control of private enterprise. His proposal to place major AI companies into a government-controlled sovereign wealth fund is entirely consistent with his democratic socialist worldview. He argues that because AI draws upon society’s accumulated knowledge, the public should own a substantial share of the industry.

More surprising is President Trump’s willingness to travel down the same road. His recent comments endorsing government ownership stakes in leading AI companies represent a dramatic departure from traditional free-market principles. Instead of allowing entrepreneurs, investors, and consumers to determine the future of AI through voluntary exchange, Washington would become both regulator and owner.

This is not capitalism. It is state capitalism, or what might more accurately be called AI state socialism (economic fascism). When government owns part of an industry, political considerations inevitably replace market signals. Companies begin serving politicians rather than customers. Innovation becomes subordinate to lobbying and political favoritism.

America became the world’s most prosperous nation because government generally protected property rights rather than acquired property. The path to prosperity lies not through federal ownership of AI firms but through economic freedom, entrepreneurship, and competitive markets. Sanders and Trump may disagree on many issues, but on this one they are marching toward the same destination—and it is the wrong one for America.

Flynn, Henry Hazlitt, Frank Chodorov, Robert A. Taft, Howard Buffett, Ludwig von Mises, Murray N. Rothbard, Ron Paul, and Andrew P. Napolitano

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for a free and industrious people to dissolve the political bonds which have reduced them from sovereign citizens into dependent subjects, and to reclaim among the powers of the earth the station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to seek the restoration of total liberty.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all individuals are born with the natural rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness; that governments are instituted among men solely to secure these rights, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new safeguards for their future security and freedom.

It has imposed tariffs and hidden taxes upon consumers, raising the cost of living under the false banner of protection while burdening ordinary Americans with higher prices.

It has created vast systems of redistribution whereby citizens are compelled to surrender the fruits of their labor to sustain programs that have transformed self-reliant individuals into dependents of the state.

It has created Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, subsidies, grants, and innumerable entitlements beyond all constitutional restraint, binding generations to government promises financed through debt and inflation.

It has fostered a political culture in which citizens are taught to look first to Washington rather than to family, community, voluntary association, enterprise, or personal responsibility.

It has taken equity stakes in corporations setting a precedent for more government ownership of the means of production in gross violation of free enterprise.

It has accumulated debts so enormous that future generations are condemned to servitude for obligations they never consented to incur.

It has multiplied regulations beyond number, strangling enterprise, limiting opportunity, and placing the livelihood of millions at the mercy of unelected bureaucracies.

It has interfered in voluntary exchanges among free people, substituting political coercion for peaceful cooperation and market choices.

It has interfered with the sacred relationship between doctor and patient, substituting bureaucratic mandates, insurance regulations, political decrees, and centralized guidelines for individualized medical judgment and informed consent.

It has undermined medical freedom by compelling citizens to finance healthcare systems increasingly controlled by government dictates rather than voluntary choice and professional discretion.

It has burdened physicians, hospitals, and caregivers with endless regulations, reporting requirements, and administrative controls that diminish the quality of care and elevate compliance above compassion.

It has empowered unelected agencies and political authorities to determine which treatments, medicines, and procedures may be permitted, reimbursed, restricted, or denied, thereby placing political power above the judgment of patients and their physicians.

It has mandated vaccines in gross violation of individual autonomy causing illnesses and death to incalculable number of Americans—young and old.

It has weakened the very foundation of sound medical practice by eroding trust, confidentiality, independence, and personal responsibility within the healing professions.

It has granted privileges and protections to favored corporations, financial institutions, and special interests while ordinary Americans bear the burden of inflation, taxation, and declining purchasing power.

It has delegated extraordinary powers to the Federal Reserve System, an institution empowered to create money out of nothing, debase the currency, and manipulate interest rates.

It has thereby destroyed the savings of prudent citizens, inflated the prices of homes, education, healthcare, and necessities, and generated the recurring boom-and-bust cycles that devastate workers, families, and businesses alike.

It has concealed this inflationary tax beneath technical language while the purchasing power of the dollar steadily declines, and the middle class is impoverished.

It has engaged in undeclared wars across the globe in violation of the constitutional requirement that the representatives of the people alone possess the authority to declare war.

It has stationed American troops in distant lands for decades at immeasurable cost in blood, treasure, and liberty, while neglecting the genuine defense of the American homeland.

It has entangled the nation in foreign quarrels having little connection to the security or prosperity of the American people.

It has attacked—and killed—foreign nationals on the high seas without due process and violating international law.

It has used fear and perpetual conflict to justify endless military spending, biometric domestic surveillance, secrecy, censorship, and executive overreach.

It has divided the people into hostile factions for political gain while both major political parties continue the same expansion of centralized power.

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our fellow citizens. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their rulers to extend arbitrary authority over every sphere of life. We have reminded them that freedom cannot survive when government assumes responsibility for cradle-to-grave security. We have appealed to their sense of justice, their history, and their love of liberty. Too often they have been deaf to the voice of reason, choosing temporary benefits over permanent principles.

We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity which declares that no people can remain free while dependent upon political power for their sustenance, retirement, healthcare, employment, education, and security. A government powerful enough to provide everything is likewise powerful enough to take everything.

We, therefore, the advocates of liberty and constitutional self-government, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do solemnly declare that the people of the United States ought to reclaim the principles of limited government, sound money, free markets, voluntary association, and peace; that they are entitled to freedom from taxation, inflation, regulation, and undeclared wars; and that as free and independent citizens they possess the full right to control the fruits of their labor, engage in voluntary exchange, and pursue happiness without political interference.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee laid the groundwork last week in passing a five-year reauthorization of transportation programs. Greedy for more “infrastructure” dollars to shower on home states in a midterm and unwilling to raise the gasoline tax, Republicans conjured up a new revenue stream: the first-ever federal “annual registration fee” for vehicles.

Declaration of Re-Independence

Inspired by the words of Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, George Washington, William Graham Sumner, Grover Cleveland, Calvin Coolidge, H.L. Mencken, Albert J. Nock, John T. Flynn, Henry Hazlitt, Frank Chodorov, Robert A. Taft, Howard Buffett, Ludwig von Mises, Murray N. Rothbard, Ron Paul, and Andrew P. Napolitano

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for a free and industrious people to dissolve the political bonds which have reduced them from sovereign citizens into dependent subjects, and to reclaim among the powers of the earth the station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to seek the restoration of liberty.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all individuals are born with the natural rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness; that governments are instituted among men solely to secure these rights, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; and that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new safeguards for their future security and freedom.

Such is now the necessity which constrains them to examine the destructive policies imposed upon them by administrations of both political parties. The history of the federal government in the modern age is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an unlimited and centralized state. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

It has confiscated the earnings of labor through oppressive income taxes and payroll taxes, punishing productivity and thrift while rewarding political favoritism and dependency.

It has imposed tariffs and hidden taxes upon consumers, raising the cost of living under the false banner of protection while burdening ordinary Americans with higher prices.

It has created vast systems of redistribution whereby citizens are compelled to surrender the fruits of their labor to sustain programs that have transformed self-reliant individuals into dependents of the state.

It has fostered a political culture in which citizens are taught to look first to Washington rather than to family, community, voluntary association, enterprise, or personal responsibility.

It has accumulated debts so enormous that future generations are condemned to servitude for obligations they never consented to incur.

It has multiplied regulations beyond number, strangling enterprise, limiting opportunity, and placing the livelihood of millions at the mercy of unelected bureaucracies.

It has interfered with the sacred relationship between doctor and patient, substituting bureaucratic mandates, insurance regulations, political decrees, and centralized guidelines for individualized medical judgment and informed consent.

The Boomers of Kentucky embarrassed the United States on the world stage yesterday.

Around the world, people genuinely wondered: can an American politician survive who doesn’t repeat low-IQ platitudes about Israel and the Middle East?

The Boomers -- with their heterodox Christianity and FOX News propaganda -- gave their answer.

Republican politics is dominated by people who for some reason still think Sean Hannity is a smart guy, and Mark Levin is a constitutional scholar.

Pat Buchanan had given them the example of the learned and articulate right-winger -- and Pat was well to the right of Hannity and Levin -- but they decided to go with Tomi Lahren and Dan Bongino instead.

Oh, Massie voted this way or that, people will say, and that’s why he was targeted in this unprecedented way. Yet there’s Donald Trump out there campaigning for pro-amnesty Mike Lawler. So I don’t believe you that this is a question of Massie’s voting record (which is stellar, by the way).

If that were true Trump would have waged all-out war on Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski long ago.

Even if Massie had had a handful of objectionable votes, a million times more important than any Massie vote is this principle:

A patriot who values his country’s sovereignty cannot allow three socially leftist billionaires who represent a foreign interest to buy a congressional seat and place a ridiculous empty suit in it.

Even if for some reason you don’t like Massie, you as a patriot would have to dislike THAT a hundred times more. That’s not even debatable.

These three billionaires never once set foot in Kentucky -- Kentuckians, to them, are lower than dirt, and exist solely to have congressional seats bought from them.

Put up a nonentity like “Ed Gallrein” who refuses to debate (how can any voter reward that?), have him utter a few Boomer slogans to satisfy the rubes, and otherwise hide him away. That was the strategy. Boomers (yes, I know there are exceptions) are too morally and intellectually corrupt even to understand what just happened.

But the rest of us understand.

Can you imagine “Ed Gallrein” leading the charge against the Covid restrictions? He would have been first in line for the damn “vaccine”!

Remember, too, that the folks who voted for “Ed Gallrein” yesterday are the kind of people who think Marco Rubio is an impressive person, so there was no reaching them.

But the younger generations, who don’t get their information from the insulting caricature of conservatism that is FOX News, aren’t going to fall for the nonsense that snookered the Boomers -- and therein lies hope.

Incidentally, the easiest thing in the world would have been for Massie to buckle. Nobody reading this has the remotest idea the pressure that was brought to bear against him. Not one of his detractors could have lasted a week in Massie’s shoes.

If Trump can sup in happy concord with Zohran Mamdani, the radical leftist mayor of New York, you’d think he could have spared a meal with Massie, whose track record proved he was not Trump’s enemy.

Not that you’d know it from the anti-Massie brigade (half of whom used to love Massie before they were instructed not to love him), Massie defended Trump through two impeachments, grilled Merrick Garland over FBI assets on January 6, and defended Trump during Russiagate. By contrast, “Ed Gallrein” left the GOP when Trump was elected, and came back only when Biden was in office.

But since we’re not completely dense, we know the real reason Massie could not be tolerated.

As Glenn Greenwald put it, “If the AIPAC/Adelson crowd wants someone out of Congress for disloyalty to Israel, they will be out of Congress.

“There are a few exceptions due to unusual districts, but not many. The Israel Lobby has unlimited funding and will spend limitlessly to expunge the blasphemous.”

I repeat that no American patriot can tolerate, much less celebrate, this grotesque and demeaning situation.

The polls show that this situation won’t exist forever. We will reach a point at which the foreign money (and that’s obviously what it is) will at last be a mark of shame for the candidate receiving it. That will be a great day for American patriots everywhere.

My 22-year-old daughter was distraught over Massie. I told her: your age group went nearly 80-20 for Massie. I also told her: the Boomers are the most selfish and ignorant voting bloc in U.S. history.

(Please do not write to correct me if you are a Boomer. I of course know exceptions exist. If you must, write to say: “I’m as appalled as you are by how gullible my cohort is.”)

Thomas Massie should hold his head high: he stood up against the machine time and again, knowing that it could one day lead to this.

Today we have to explain to our kids: in this world, the good guys don’t always win. But you fight regardless of the prospects of winning. The fight for what is good and right is an end in itself.

For that reason, people will remember the Thomas Massies and the Ron Pauls. Nobody will remember “Ed Gallrein,” not even as the answer to a trivia question.

As it happens, I posted this particular message on Twitter last night, and I ended it there.

In my newsletter, I cannot send something like that, and end without something productive we can do.

Under the circumstances, it is easy to become cynical, bitter, or demoralized. But we cannot allow politics to determine whether our own lives are meaningful, productive, or hopeful.

We still have families to raise, businesses to build, skills to acquire, communities to strengthen, and lives to improve.

The more dysfunctional and hostile the culture becomes, the more important those things are.

My School of Life is a place where people learn practical ways to navigate -- and thrive in -- the world as it actually exists right now. Thus: surviving and even thriving during inflationary times, building independent income, homeschooling, learning valuable skills, and generally creating victories in the here and now instead of awaiting political solutions.

That sure beats sitting around frustrated and angry -- and if I’m being honest with you, even I find that very tempting right now.

Independence Won’t Save the Federal Reserve

Kathryn Judge and Mickey D. Levy’s op-ed “A Key to Fed Independence: Its 12 Regional Banks” (May 15) misses the fundamental issue facing Americans. The real problem isn’t whether the Federal Reserve is sufficiently “independent.” The problem is that the Fed has pursued destructive policies for more than a century. Since its creation in 1913, the Fed has repeatedly distorted the economy by creating money out of thin air and manipulating short-term interest rates.

These interventions fuel price inflation, erode purchasing power and generate the boom-bust cycle that devastates working- and middle-class Americans. The economy doesn’t need a central-bank babysitter or a guiding hand from monetary planners in Washington. Prosperity emerges when free people make voluntary choices, businesses invest based on real savings, and interest rates are determined by markets rather than bureaucrats.

The Fed’s track record includes the Great Depression, the inflationary 1970s, the housing bubble, enabling today’s crushing national debt and persistent inflation. This is hardly evidence of sound stewardship.

A sustainable path forward requires a gold-backed dollar, market based interest rates and a federal budget limited to constitutionally authorized spending. As America approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, restoring economic liberty is essential to restoring a limited government republic.
