For those unfamiliar with another of my missions, I’ve been transcribing the entire Bible by hand for several months now:

This effort continues to be a blessing in more ways than I can explain or even discern. I’m grateful to be immersed in the Word, and I urge any of you to consider taking this on.

At the same time, I feel like another calling might be happening:

I’m currently working on the Book of Nehemiah. That means the last book I’ve completed writing is Ezra. As with much of this section of the Old Testament, it can feel like a repetitive slog.

The message of Ezra is beautiful and meaningful. Despite the constant transgressions of the Israelites, God grants them another chance to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. You might recognize the book of Ezra as a precursor to the parable of the prodigal son.

Unlike that parable, however, the 10 chapters of Ezra don’t (to me) present a clear, compelling narrative. To my eye, those 10 chapters could literally make the same point in just a couple of paragraphs.

Yes, I fully realize how pompous and heretical that ^ last paragraph can appear to be. But I’m not pretending to know more or better than those who wrote and compiled the Bible. Rather, I’m pondering a potential calling that I touched on in one of the posts above.

Would it be helpful if someone were to carefully edit the full Bible to dramatically reduce the redundancy? There are major chunks of entire Old Testament books that simply repeat (sometimes more than once) what was already written about in painstaking detail, perhaps just one or two books prior.

The full Bible obviously serves a foundational purpose. But if so few modern humans can or will even try to push through it, is there any harm in creating an edited version that can serve as an entry point for our broken world? How helpful would such a version be in guiding us to embrace the full Bible?

How many people reading this post right now would be more likely to read the Scriptures if there were a version available that was 50 to 70 percent shorter — without straying from the original narrative and purpose?

Anyway, this is some of what’s on my mind these days…

Growing up near an elevated train gave my friends and me plenty of opportunities for mischief. For example, we could steal ripe tomatoes from the fruit stand on 31st Street and toss them at the train passing on “the el.”

A more dangerous practice involved walking from one station to the next. The first step would be to sneak onto the train (I don’t remember ever paying for it during my entire adolescence).

We’d hide out near the token booth until we heard the train coming, vault the turnstile, and head up the stairs two at a time.

To make it look like he actually cared, the token clerk would yell “Hey” after us… too late.

We’d take the train one stop from 36th Avenue to 39th Avenue and then walk back.

By “walk,” I mean we’d get to the end of the platform and climb down onto the narrow walkway near the tracks (see the image above). From this point, we could walk without a train hitting us as we looked down onto the street.

I wasn’t real big on looking down… but peer pressure is a powerful entity.

The enemy and his diabolical minions believe far more acutely than we do in the existence and power of the Creator. In fact, they have bulletproof, unshakeable faith.

Therefore, belief is obviously not enough to redeem us. For example, we can believe in gravity, but such thinking won’t save us if we step off a cliff.

By the same token, of what good is it to believe in God if we don’t strive daily, hourly to obey His commandments?

As it is written in 1 John 2:3–4, “We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands is a liar.”

It should come as no surprise that the belt of truth is the first piece of the Full Armor of God.

We all have prayer requests, many of which involve very serious personal situations. However, let’s always remember to petition the LORD on behalf of others who need support.

In addition to the prayer requests mentioned here, please stay attentive to those moments when someone you know unexpectedly comes to mind. Use that as a prompt to pray for them immediately. The Holy Spirit is speaking to you.

FYI: Each week, I compile handwritten lists of all your requests and bring them to the Eucharistic Chapel at the nearby Catholic Church (see photo below). I pray for all of you and then place the list in the chapel’s prayer box, where your requests are prayed for privately yet directly as part of specific Masses.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” (1 John 5:14)

Thank you, everyone, for dedicating time and energy to creating a better, more positive, and accepting world.

In the late 90s, before I had an internet connection and well before I had a cell phone, it required ingenuity to stay in touch.

For example, if I had plans to meet someone in Manhattan, we’d set up a time and place. If the person I was meeting was running late or early, they’d call my landline and leave a message.

When I arrived at the location, if that person wasn’t there, I’d call my own phone, let the answering machine pick up, and then punch in a specific code. This would enable me to hear my messages. This is how I’d get word that perhaps my friend was running late or had switched to another venue.

Today, we let machines do the “thinking” for us.

In our “modern” society, we no longer have to learn how to spell or remember phone numbers or do math in our heads or memorize directions or even walk up a single flight of stairs.

Thanks to the marvels of industrial civilization, we happily delegate such tedious tasks to technology so we can have time to focus on the truly important stuff, like… um… well… uh… removing 90 percent of the large fish from the ocean, perhaps?

Not only that, but we have tricked ourselves into believing that we should never be out of touch.

When did we become so important?

Has evolution altered our significance quotient over the past quarter-century? Were people in the recent past simply not consequential enough to warrant 365/24/7 digital communication?

Or could it be something else…?

It’s believed that cats like to be groomed with a very slightly wet toothbrush because it reminds them of their mother’s tongue. As you can see in the background of this photo, I’ve been doing this for Jupi… but I use Holy Water.

I joyfully invite you to watch this short reel and read its caption:

On its own, the concept highlighted above points us toward a powerful, inspirational, and very real place. It’s a place I aim to dwell in.

But the question remains: How do we get there from here?

Some version of the phrase “Be not afraid” appears 365 times in the Bible. Today is an excellent day to start a daily practice of acknowledging this reality.

Neither your circumstances nor your concerns are you.

Science calls them patterns. More fundamentally, they are a form of spiritual warfare designed to keep us from attaining our fearfully and wonderfully made potential.

The more potential you have, the more intense the spiritual warfare you will face.

Jesus points the way in Matthew 11:28-29:

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

I pray that you all strive for and attain rest for your souls as you bring your countless, much-needed gifts to the world…

May 27 was Kenny’s 61st birthday. He’s one of my long-time regulars who has become a dear friend.

Among other things, I gave him an old-school birthday card, and I wrapped at least one of his presents. After all, who knows how long it’s been since he’s unwrapped a gift or received a traditional card.

Kenny is a praying man who loves the Blessed Mother, so this gift really made him smile.

He and I shared some warm hugs on Wednesday, and I felt such gratitude for being called to this mission.

In October 2011, Occupy Wall Street (OWS) encouraged everyone to pull their money from the big banks. You know, to “smash capitalism” and all that.

I already had an account with a small local bank… so that part was covered, so to speak. But I also had a [trigger alert] Chase credit card.

Here’s some of what I wrote at the time about this scenario:

When I went to my local bank to inquire about getting a credit card from them instead, I was informed that if I signed up that particular day, I’d get a free gift.

“What might this gift be?” I asked.

“A blanket,” came the reply.

“I’ll be back in an hour,” I promised — barely able to contain my joy.

I went home, took care of a few things, and prepared for what had become my almost-daily visits to Zuccotti Park during the initial encampment. This time, however, I stopped at my bank, filled out the forms, and was handed a brand-new blanket.

Smiling all the way from Astoria to Wall Street, I carried my gift directly down to the OWS Comfort Station and donated it to be used by those sleeping in the park.

Where do I begin?

Let’s be clear: Switching credit cards did absolutely nothing to challenge capitalism in general or the big banks in particular.

But then again, neither did OWS.

So there’s that.

But here’s a question I never hear asked: How do such meaningless acts add up to impact “activists” on a personal level? Perhaps my own story will shine some light on such self-sabotage.

That Chase credit card I so willingly discarded had a much lower interest rate than the “small bank” card I ended up with. It also gave rewards points, which translated directly into cash. When my finances took a hit a few years later, I had to use my credit card far more often than I wanted.

Result: Way more finance charges, no reward cash, and increased debt. I’m not blaming all this on an OWS stunt, but my empty gesture sure helped make things much worse.

The Powers That Shouldn’t Be™ — in conjunction with woke guilt-tripping — lead to good-hearted people making moves that are self-sabotaging.

Wanna-be “activists” are rendered powerless despite their often sincere desire to help.

Some call it coincidence…

No matter where you find yourself on the ideological spectrum, it’s time to activate your eyes to see and ears to hear.

Coda: This post is not about finding the “best” bank or credit card.

A thought as we gather once again to offer praise and request support:

When we pray for change and favor, quite often, God will realign us so we’re better able to handle and sustain His divine blessings.

Such a realignment can often feel challenging. It can even feel, at first, like a setback. This makes it imperative not to view the LORD as a genie who doles out wishes. His love runs much deeper than that.

In fact, He loves us so much that He will help us level up to our best selves — and give us the grace we need to navigate the adjustment period.

Let’s support each other on this sometimes confusing walk down the narrow path.

As you can see ^, there’s yet another new restaurant coming to my brunch-saturated neighborhood.

How diabolical that someone saved up to open a business and dedicated their precious time and energy to it, only to be coerced into calling it “Hellfire,” as if that were something attractive and worth celebrating.

On top of that, they use a rooster in the logo as if birds don’t already view humans as demons. The only hellfire most chickens understand is the seemingly unlimited cruelty of a broken world:

The Animal-Industrial Complex is the biggest bird killer on the planet. Just for example: every day, 23 million chickens are killed in the U.S. for food. That’s 269 dead chickens per second.

To a chicken, we are the devil!

I say we replace this place with a free fruit garden run by volunteer grandmothers who wear their wrinkles like a shield as they dole out bananas, apples, mangoes, and prayers to all who come — without reservation or judgment.

Let’s put on the Full Armor of God and remind ourselves:

One of my 10 tattoos is a small, simple question mark.

It represents my commitment to asking questions even if it means I’ll be ostracized. Another of my tattoos is a monkey wrench, so that may also help explain my perspective.

If you’re in any setting — family, relationship, ideological echo chamber, etc. — and asking questions about the group is discouraged, that is cultic behavior.

Therefore, I’ve always tried to prioritize creating new questions over insisting on having “the answers.”

For crucial context, please consider:

In the Gospels, Jesus asked 307 questions while being asked 183 questions. He answered fewer than 10 questions directly — quite often responding to questions with questions.

Thus, the question: What would Jesus do?

Of course, the quote above is not from the latest figurehead of profit and bloodlust.

Rather, it’s something President Lyndon B. Johnson (Democrat) said — six decades ago — to the Greek ambassador in response to Greece’s squabble with Cyprus.

We have a delusional faith that anonymous workers prepared our food safely, that the person driving next to us on the highway is paying attention, that the train conductor is sober, and that our doctors actually know what they’re talking about.

I could go on… and on. But you get the idea.

We have mustard seed faith in everyone and everything — except God.

When it comes time to believe in prayers, miracles, Scriptures, and salvation, we hem and haw and focus on all the alleged loopholes. After all, we don’t want to look or sound “crazy,” right?

Spoiler alert: It’s not those with faith in God who are “crazy.”

We already know how to be faithful. We do it all day, every day. It’s time we all learn how to aim that faith in the right direction.

We all have prayer requests, many of which involve very serious personal situations. However, let’s always remember to petition the LORD on behalf of others who need support.

In addition to the prayer requests mentioned here, please stay attentive to those moments when someone you know unexpectedly comes to mind. Use that as a prompt to pray for them immediately. The Holy Spirit is speaking to you.

FYI: Each week, I compile handwritten lists of all your requests and bring them to the Eucharistic Chapel at the nearby Catholic Church (see photo below). I pray for all of you and then place the list in the chapel’s prayer box, where your requests are prayed for privately yet directly as part of specific Masses.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” (1 John 5:14)

Thank you, everyone, for dedicating time and energy to creating a better, more positive, and accepting world.

You are not alone. I look forward to praying for and with you and hope you’re also in each other’s prayers.

Sometimes I wonder how these updates about my mission are perceived. To some, I imagine, I seem relentless — constantly asking for support. Perhaps others would call such updates “redundant” or “repetitive” — often covering the same territory.

But isn’t that the point of all this?

Running a street mission for nearly ten years requires relentlessness. The problems don’t go away. The needs are ongoing. The people I help are in a steady state of need. So am I, when it comes to funding my efforts.

As for the often repetitive nature of these updates, they merely mimic the often repetitive nature of my efforts. Each day, I wipe the slate clean and start anew. The individuals I help may come and go, but there’s no time for rest. No days off.

The work is relentless and repetitive.

What I’m asking of you is to also become relentless and repetitive — in your support of my mission and how often you spread the word.

Let’s be relentless and repetitive together, and watch how many miracles we can help facilitate.

I’ve been interviewed more times than I can remember. Those experiences have sometimes left me shaking my head when I’ve found factual errors in the ensuing articles, posts, and podcasts about me.

After all, who better than Mickey Z. to fact-check something written about Mickey Z.?

Whenever I ponder these memories, I can’t help but see them through the lens of the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.

Murray Gell-Mann was a physicist. One of his close friends was novelist-turned director, Michael Crichton — perhaps best known for Jurassic Park.

It was after his physicist friend that Crichton coined the term, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. Here’s how Crichton described it:

“You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward — reversing cause and effect. I call these the ‘wet streets cause rain’ stories. Paper’s full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

You forget what you know…

Every single person reading this article has subjects they know well — extremely well. Therefore, I invite you to start consuming content through the Gell-Man Amnesia lens.

Activate your eyes to see and ears to hear…

Keep this reality in mind when you read anything on any topic — whether you think you know it well or not.

Stop trusting “experts” — even the “experts” on “your side.”
